Yeah Reach had co-op, and yes your going to Need a Microsoft account, but at the very least you don't need to pay for gold.
They also said all custom game modes, or forge content from previous games servers is all going to be ported over to the MCC soon. so there's a benefit to still having an old account.

Think about it, if they made the beta public they would've had to deal with retards wondering why there's a broken UI, no graphical options, and only a single campaign level. No, what I'm getting at is that most of the issues with Halo, come from being tied to the xbox and essentially being microsoft's premier showcase for xbox live as a service, with MCC coming to pc it's likely that even begrudgingly they'll at least cave for a public custom games browser, if not completely caving for userhosting, since long term microsoft doesn't want to release another OS and therefore doesn't have the benefits that come along with bootstrapping their software for future rereleases, at least in the PC market.
Long term, it's objectively better to allow for userhosts and custom games, especially if it's an already released game with full content roll out and trying to inject microtransactions would result in negative consumer interaction.
