It has some nice additions such as all the spaceships move around when encountered on a flatplane. Every space ship has it's own weapons with unique firing arcs. Some are slow turning, and some are very maneuverable. What this means in practice is you can do cool things like arm a few planes with very strong missiles send them at a UFO way to strong for them, have them tail the UFO so when they engage they are behind it, and have them fire their missiles before disengaging so that the UFO never gets a chance to fire at them. I honestly prefer UFO defense though because I like the aliens a lot better.

Majority of the difference are just small quality of life improvements. The notable differences that effect the gameplay I saw with between the orginal xcom and this is ammo logistics are streamlined a bit, as in you don't have to buy ammo for your starting weapons or any infantry explosives for that matter and the air combat is revamped which >>16645549 has explained in detail. Suppression which cause the unit (yours or the enemies) TU to deplete, preventing the unit to use reaction fire or even move in some cases. Oh, the heavy cannon has been replaced by shotguns, so any strats you had in xcom that involved that guns alternative ammo you might want to rethink about. I've heard the heavy cannon may come back in Xenonauts 2 in the form of a grenade launcher and replace the rocket launcher all together. Which I think is a good idea because who the fuck used the rpg in the original game when the heavy cannon was both more viable and versatile.
