Does anyone have any tips for getting gud at this game? I’m stuck on the first boss of Sayonara and am quickly approaching 30 tries.

You haven't figured out what to do, or you just keep failing?

The giant tadpole, right? You just avoid it until the smaller ones pop out, then hook them. Repeat this process several times until the boss arbitrarily decides it's been defeated. You can also try swinging underneath the stage to avoid the tadpole itself.
The Umihara Kawase games are neat, but their bosses have always been poor due to the one-hit kills and cryptic fights. Fortunately, Sayonara is the most painless of the bunch because it removed the lives system of the previous games.

I finally figured it out. I just needed to get better at controlling the fishing line. Seems like you want to watch for when Umi reaches the bottom of a bounce then retract it to launch yourself over the boss after he rams into the wall. It’s one of those games where mastering the control is as hard as the platforming it seems.

What a coincidence, I just started playing these games again. Kawase is a cutie.
27f5ec No.16647221
If you look up speedruns you can find little tricks that may or may not be easier than beating the level the intended way.
They're great games but you have to play them for hours until the fishing line is second nature.

Yeah, this morning I realized it’s genuinely just about gitting gud with the line. Sometimes I get a flow going and zip across a level, others I feel like I’m inching through.

This guy's artstyle is great. I'm glad that he moved on to original art, but this Umihara Kawase picture might still be one of his best works. Especially with how well his artstyle fits the first game.

It’s amazing how easy people can make this look
552be9 No.16649485
Is there some way for getting a smoother swing? Feels like I’m bouncing so much I don’t have much control on where I’m going which makes dropping those oranges on the crab miserable.
b16fee No.16649570
>>16649485
Extending and retracting your line while swinging helps to reduce the bouncing and gives you more velocity vertically and horizontally if done right which can help you make certain jumps. For the oranges, I always try to get hooked to the boxes with some momentum already so it's easier to get away once it opens up. Trying to grab and open them without speed is a death sentence most of the time
552be9 No.16649578
>>16649570
Believe it or not I found a different way to do it.
>latch on to orange box and the line extended just enough so you aren’t touching the crab
>gently rock back and forth but due to the extended line you have a wider range
>the moment it opens push down and be ready to launch the opposite direction your swinging (not much control over that but you’ll be safe)
140 tries later and I can just about perfect the crab every time, but man are my hands cramping. In other news I tried the ps1 game a bit. The jumping is a little stiffer but man is it a million times more comfy.

Actually, rereading your post I think I basically just did what you said. Sorry, the physics sort of fried my mind.

Now I'm up to the tadpole as well. I figured this one myself (unlike the octopi in the field before it), but I still can't beat it for now. Are you basically screwed if you let at least one of the frogs reach the water? Every time I decided to try to go for the backpack and wait out the boss fight in the process, the water was swarming with them, with no way to clear them all out and reach the door in time.
b16fee No.16649884

Yeah you should camp out the tadpole eggs and get rid of them ASAP. You can still win if one gets to the water, but it's a lot harder

I somehow managed to beat it, but I can't help feeling that it was at least in part due to luck. I had 3 frogs waiting for me on the surface after the tadpole did a sudoku, and one even stunned me, yet I still survived.

Frogs don’t kill, they just stun and if you’re too close to the water it’ll knock you off screen and that’s what will kill you.

Made it to field 22 on one of the routes and to field 52 on another one. The ridiculous number of constantly respawning enemies kind of ruin the game, especially in the later levels. Tadpole fight doesn't feel like it's about luck anymore, but consistently making it through 22 feels impossible.

Looks like I died right before I could beat the game.

Anyone know when the retro stages are suppose to drop for Fresh? Thank god the Japanese release had english text so I didn't have to give Nicalis money or wait 4 months for no reason.

Look forward to meeting the second, harder tadpole. You'll love him.
I managed to beat the first Umihara Kawase 100%, but I still can't execute the super rocket jump technique that you need for some stages in Shun, or how to get across that top conveyor belt in field 62. Are there any real Kawase pros around?

I did it. There was no tadpole at all on this route. The only boss here was the seahorse, and the encounter was brief, because I took the lower door.

I wish I would have known. Now nip copies go for around 10-20 dollars more. Hopefully Nicalis doesn’t screw with the NA version to much.
Also, about the only thing I don’t like about Fresh is it sort of abandoned that old anime style and the levels don’t looks like some surreal mess of Japanese culture.

After going through Shun I feel like it’s a game everyone should play. It might have a steep learning curve, but it’s just so damn comfy and the art is so beautiful. I think I might try and track down a ps1 copy just to have it.

umihara kawase is a wonderfully abstract game. The solution is always through your understanding of the mechanics, but the mechanics are so sparse you really need to wrap your head around it. What might seem impossible at first is all the sudden clean and easy to do. By the time you start conquering the final few fields you are a world apart from when you first started.

Yeah, the things I can do in early levels now are beyond what I could imagine at first. It's especially satisfying since it's not because I unlocked some gadget or had some number arbitrarily go up, it's still the same fishing hook and rubber line from 20 hours ago.

Finally did the harder route in shun, feels real nice to finally beat it. Man am I excited for Fresh. Nicalis is offering the Japanese Famicom style box but it’s considerably worse on the cover due to what I reckon was a censorship choice.

More than that, they didn’t use the original art and instead opted to use a random piece of promotional art. I guess it’s still nice to offer it seeing as an original copy with the famicom style box is 80-100 now, but I would have liked the JP box.

You're going to love Shun. Everything about the original is finetuned in a way new players might not appreciate. All of the "bosses" can be easily and intentionally skipped. Same goes for most of the stages. If you know where the grab onto, you can breaze through most of them in about 15 seconds. Once you get into the grind of figuring out stages in practice mode, going back, getting a little bit further, then practicing some more, that's when you've hit peak comfy. Good luck with F56, F57, and F58.
