So, i started playing the first mafia, because of reasons, and, despite the fact that it's a really old game i'm amazed how much details the game has. Even compared with it's closest game (gta series, any of them) is just, amazing.
What i like about it:
>details in car mechanic
if you fuck up your car due being a retarded driver, the car perfomance will suffer too and it will be a constant pain to evade police/thugs
> AI
although some time the AI acts kind of dull, it's really amazing how the gang or the police acts to stop you or to kill you, by making your car fly like a bird or just to ambush you
>Bad behavior penalties
even though i find it really annoying some times, going at full speed, having your gun out like nothing happen, or even evading red lights it's enough for the police to bust your ass up
>linear missions
I don't know why, but i find really comfy to have a separate history mode and an exploration mode. So i don't have to be driving or wasting my time moving from A to B, it's just cinematic "do this shit, you did it? great, move the fuck out to the next mission".

i feel you, when i started playing it, i couldn't get over the controls (heck, i spend like one hour trying to get out of the car) and, one thing that i didn't like was the way they handled the steering in the game, if you use the wasd for drving, the car make a harsh turn, but if you use the directional arrows, the car make an soft steering and somehow, a drift turn.

I don't know if my resolution had something to do with it in retrospect, but I could barely hit anything taking any steps at all while shooting. And the game doesn't mention inaccuracy while moving and shooting in the tutorial if I remember correctly, or at least they don't mention that it will totally fuck your accuracy

The game of my childhood, one that I keep coming back to every once in a while. Absolutely love the story (original czech voice acting is 10/10, btw) and all the mechanics in the game come together really well, from the autistic attention to cars (did you know you can switch gears manually if you want to? As well as control the turn signals?) to the gunplay (not really realistic in that the assholes can take a bullet to the face, but there are no sponges and you can be murdered fairly easily as well, which is exactly what I want in a game). The two other game modes are also great - one for just fucking around and blowing shit up, other for fun challenges. Also love the protag – I don't think I've seen another game pull this kind of character yet, he comes off really likeable and relatable.
Really, it pains me it never got a proper sequel. People say they liked Mafia 2, but it just wasn't the same thing – it was made by a different dev and clearly decided to move in the "GTA clone" direction. It might not have been terrible, but it was just mediocre to me.

Mafia II should have taken place in 1957 and not 1951, then not only Tommy's death would've stayed the same but also most of the shit like songs or cars would be fitting too. It feels like they really wanted this game to take place in 1957 or so given the aforementioned crossover as well as the fact that most of the culture reflected there is from the late 50s, but they must have clumsily changed it into 1951 for whatever reason (so that Vito doesn't stay too long in prison?).

The patched versions have a difficulty settings, but the first version didn't and I remember it being pretty fucking difficult. I couldn't beat it when I was little, but I found an easy to exploit bug that lets you win easily. You needed to take the blocked off path you encounter near the start of the race, ride near to its end, and press the button to respawn your car. It spawns you in front of the finish line, and going through it actually counts as finishing the lap (it doesn't if you just drive through the "shortcut" though, you need to respawn the car there for some reason). Later versions patched this, but as I said, they also come with difficulty settings so there's no need to cheat. Alternatively, you could also just git gud.

I also never had a problem with the driving, the driving is pretty realistic for the underpowered, overweight cars of the 1930s that had bicycle tires and no brakes.
Heck it has even force feedback and clutch axis, so you can theoretically put a wooden wheel on your g29 or Thrustmaster and larp as a mafia driver.

Mafia II had really troubled development and was already behind multiple deadlines. It has a shitton of cut content - bicycles and motorbikes, a lot of missions, a freeroaming WWII part instead of just a training mission, etc. Hell there's the fact that the city is designed like something out of a GTA clone but the mission structure is mostly linear.

I'm not sure why Mafia is even compared to GTA so much. I mean it has cars and is based around crime, but the first game has little freeroaming other than a tacked on bonus mode (there's a whole chunk of countryside that's never used outside of that) while the second one was probably meant to be a GTA clone at first as I've stated in a previous post (the city design, the interface, etc.). It's mostly different overall.
One thing I didn't like so much in the first Mafia is that while the traffic changing as the story moves forward was neat, it starts off really diverse but by the end of the story in 1938 there's like only 2 or 3 models on the street.

The racing part was tough, but not unbeatable, and you need to be some sort of retard to fail the car chase. Just overtake him and block his path, and he'll be forced to get out of the car. Alternatively, shoot his tires while driving after him and he's fucked. Hell, if you pursue him long enough, he usually fucks up somewhere along the way and crashes or fails to complete a turn and drives off of a cliff or similar. It's one of the easier missions.

You do realise you can just shoot everyone dead if you want to, right? There's nothing explicitly forcing you to take the stealth path. You do get a possible reward if you go full stealth, though the car with the mayor doesn't drive away, and stays by the house. If you go to it with Salvatore, he'll teach you how to get inside it, and you'll thus unlock this model of the car, which otherwise remains unobtainable for the remainder of the game

There was no "civilian market" in 1930. The NFA wasn't enacted until 1934. You could buy a tommy gun for $200 out of a catalog. They were advertised for farm or ranch defense.
