What I absolutely hate about games that depends on community tracks like Osu! And the such is that they don't have any fucking idea on how to make, let alone balance, a track. They either completely depend on the handlebar or are aimed towards PC/controller scheme instead of actual mat/arcade inputs.

Try Crypt of the Necrodancer for a quick fix.

>>16604664

Project Diva is legit a really good game.

I also had a quick fix with Theathymh Final Fantasy Curtain Call or however you write that.

If not, I guess you have to settle with stuff like rock band or guitar hero.

By the way, gamedev question here:

What makes a Rhythm Game good? It can't just be the track selection or everyone would just play Audiosurf day in and day out.

I knew a kid like that. He was fat as fuck and played DDR all day.

>>16604933

The track selection does actually matter a lot if you want player retention. Also though I would say you need satisfying gameplay. All the little sounds and lights or whatever your specific game has have to look nice. Take Osu! for example. Mappers can change the note hitsounds but most don't because the standard clicks are satisfying to hear and are very audibly separate from the song itself so when you string together combos you get that dopamine rush. You obviously need a wide range of difficulty as well. Player created content will keep the game alive long after it's usual life. If you are talking about arcade style games it needs to have good smooth/responsive controls. There are probably many other things that contribute to making a rhythm game good but these are just the ones I can immediately think of.

non-shit music is important. I couldn't play a game full of spicshit reggaeton and nigger hip-hop and rap music.

What makes rhythm games fun for me is when the charts actually make sense. For example, I always hated Konami's DDR for its retarded charts (can't hit notes by alternating feet. big gaps in charts, annoying announcer). they did eventually step up their game as time went on. However, ITG was always much better, until Kikenami sued them off the face of the Earth that is.

For Pump It Up (pictured in vids) charts (almost) always flow nicely (YMMV for pre-Exceed charts), you can hit every step alternating your feet 95% of the time (except for special charts like Join the Party in crazy), and turns and crossovers actually make fucking sense. And there are higher levels of difficulty. I'd say the top-dog dance-pad series by far (It even has nip songs in latest releases). Andamiro even put Konami's to shame back when when they put out 'Pump Pump Revolution' charts (see mp4 related. btw that's only a Lv9 chart. PIU goes all the way up to 29). Only downside is it's a gook series.

Good music is a big one. Now that is pretty subjective, but having good variety of genres and styles is more easily quantifiable and helps a lot since people can play what they are in the mood for and different types of songs can test different skills. For me, what also makes a rhythm game great is how well the gameplay matches the song. I want to feel like I'm actually creating the song with the buttons I'm pressing. Having the notes matching very clearly with the guitar/drums/vocals or whatever is super important for creating a rewarding experience. For example, Project Diva is one of my favorite series. Every note you hit is very obviously something in the song (usually vocals), which really creates a sense that you're becoming one with the song if you play well, and likewise missing notes makes that part of the song you're playing not play. Now compare that to something like Audiosurf, which as far as I've seen barely matches the music at all. It's like you're just listening to music while doing something completely different. There is a big disconnect between song and gameplay. I don't get the appeal at all.

Customization is also a great thing that can make the games more enjoyable. Like Project Diva has tons of costumes for the characters, and other kinds of cosmetics items. DJMax is another great series. It lets you change things like the note visuals, the position of the note track, and the look of the note track. Not just in visuals too, having a selection of hitsounds and the ability to turn them off/on is a great addition. There are a lot more things too, but the last I'll mention is having a good difficulty range and curve. A lot of the fun of these games is getting better to the point you can play shit that doesn't even look possible with ease. Having a good smooth difficulty curve with plenty of variety to help the players get up to the hardest shit is very nice to have. I've played some games where there is one or a few really fucking hard songs that are so much harder than anything else I wasn't sure how you would even build up to having the ability to play it.

I know about TechnoMotion. The company that made it (F2 System) had already received help from Andamiro (PIU company). Thanks to Kikenami's lawsuit in 2000, Andamiro got F2 to make the next PIU version (Extra). It was the first version brought to the west (albeit illegally because it was for domestic use only), and turned PIU into an international hit, hence my previous post.

I see, sadly TM didn't get much love, it was my favorite of the bunch, I could only rescue most stepcharts and recreated the songs thanks to some friends who had the short versions and that team stepmasters later which closed down pretty quickly.

you may want to try to sticking to stepfiles and songs made before 2010. the Over a Frail Dream pack may be a decent place to start: http://east.stepmania-online.com/Over%20a%20Frail%20Dream.zip

miku FT and miku diva series are the best rhythm games.

the notes make sense, its not hard for the sake of being hard. difficulty greatly depends on the song and its potential to be difficult.

4050fe  No.16614346

>>16614298

normal difficulty is pressing either x or circle over and over

"normal" is just a grade for each song. there are some songs that are harder on "normal" than other songs on extreme. the star rating is the difficulty rating. just look at "a single red leaf" on extreme compared to streaming heart on normal.

the songs usually use about 3-5 inputs on easy (circle, X, directional right/down, and the analog stick/touchpad stars. 3-7 on normal, and 8-12 on hard+. diva has an emphasis on getting certain parts perfect. very hard to win many events without nailing those technical and chance zones and hitting large combos.

future tones difficulty and button variety greatly depend on the song.
