If I'm going to be brutally honest here, I didn't really care much for Commander Keen even as a kid when it came out. Playing through the id/Apogee fare with a Gravis gamepad, even 8-year-old me largely dismissed the games, because my NES, SNES and Genesis had similar, and overall better games. Didn't really like Commander Keen or its artstyle then, and the only thing I found redeemable was being able to blow him apart in the hidden levels in Doom.
The new artstyle is more in line with how Commander Keen should've been from the get-go in my opinion. I get the late 90s Cartoon Network (Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, etc.) vibe from it, and I think that's pretty okay.
But fuck absolutely everything about turning into mobileshit. Yeah, I get it, the series has always been geared towards 8-year-olds, and 8-year-olds today live on tablets and shit, but it deserves more than this. I'd rather see the new artstyle on a full, properly expanded game instead of shekel-gouging skinnerbox shit, that's infinitely more harmful to today's kids than anything else will ever be.
