>Through which machinations does it happen? Is it an elaborate EMP blast built to only target hardware manufactured before the current generation?

Parts degrading over time. For example, the laser going bad in disc based consoles. It could be any matter of things really, CRTs having their phosphorus go bad, etc. Surprisingly enough components do go bad, and what happens when it's one you can't replace? This is also why I'm going to buy backup consoles, because it's unlikely in the case failures start happening the price will go down. What if something completely out of my control happens, like a natural disaster/robbery/etc, and I need to replace my consoles, but they cost $1000s of dollars.

That's why you have a plan B. I don't know why you're getting so aggressive over the idea of wanting a backup plan in case some unforeseen issue pops up years from now. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to see 10-30 years into the future and know I wont have to replace any of my consoles like you seem to.

>Does this blast also wipe all knowledge of hardware design, electronics maintenance and technique from everyones minds?

Yeah, but if some proprietary chip or piece that isn't manufactured goes bad good lucky trying to replace it. This is why CRTs are fucked. Nobody makes the phosphorus tubes anymore.

Officially, ReDump and No-Intro are just a public database of information about games that allow you to compare your own backup copy of games to the official database to see if they match (via MD5 hashes and other such methods).

Unofficially, just Google something like "redump gamecube archive" or "redump playstation archive" and you'll see entire libraries of ReDump game ISOs/ROMs split into multiple parts on Archive.org which you can then download as .7z or in a torrent.

All of those are related and you're addressing them individually ignoring the larger issue. I just used the laser as an example, but it could be some proprietary part that you can't replace in which your solution is "Just rip it out of another one", "Hopefully someone has that particular part available" and assuming the price for consoles wont go up even though there's shit like scalpers going around breaking retro shit to limit supply for more profit. People assumed the ROM sites would be around until Nintendo DMCA'd them all, although you can still find the ROMs other ways. You're ignoring the larger problem where there's 0 guarantee things will stay like they are 20-30 years from now, and instead of viewing emulation like a plan B or C you've adopted the consolewar mentality and written it off completely assuming nothing bad will ever happen not never ever.

020c12  No.16565520

Besides the points you make emulation is also giving back to realhardwarefags too.

How do you think most people reverse engineer the games on a system, and also how do you think people find out about how to disable some hardware quirks that are not necessarily desirable (VI filter on N64, dithering on PS1)

Besides the only plausible solution to the death of the real hardware is gonna be making replacement ASICs / FPGAs, and those are generally developed based on the current understanding of the hardware which is usually pushed forward mostly by emulation, you won't always be lucky and be able to just make do with off the shelf parts like you can in a few cases what with completely proprietary chips like the N64 GPU, or pretty much the whole PlayStation lineup (pretty sure the only two things that aren't custom made for those is the PS1 CPU and the PSVITA CPU).

Reminds me of game preservation having basically no support from companies, and the unavailability of out-of-print works problem inherent in copyright. It always ends up being left to the public to prevent games from being lost. Then companies have the gall to, regardless of circumstances (e.g. expired licenses, plagiarism scandals), demonize and complain about >muh reverse engineering, >muh emulation, and >muh roms (even if self-dumped)

Last I saw, companies weren't at all interested in leaving entire working copies of their games at an archive (full game and related server software, add-ons, updates, DLC, source code, etc.), nor could they be any more glad to see old hardware die and old games become unplayable. That way you'll be compelled to switch to the newest, shiniest box they shit out. All of this while completely disregarding that copyright is supposed to allow the public to freely study, draw from, and build upon the works of the past after its (supposedly) limited period runs out. If it were up to (((them))), you'd be lucky there's anything left by then (assuming it will expire at all).

> ignoring the larger issue.

Quit pussyfooting around this "larger issue" and name it. This is already a concern that's existed for a long time and you know how it's been addressed in those fields? Donors, making replacements, reverse engineering those failing components and finding a way around them. You know how many documented failures there are in most mainstream consoles? Tons. You know how many are related to ASICs and other custom ICs? There's the SHVC cancer and 360 pre-S revision. What examples do you have? Do you live in paranoia that something may go wrong out of your control and have no contingency plan or solution? Do you just see something go wrong and assume the whole thing is worthless?

You're not qualified to talk about this. You see these things as disposable and replaceable and unable to be maintained. You think without new ones available for purchase you're shit out of luck. The emulater contingency plan satisfied a question that might affect you well after your life is over, therefore not impacting you at all. Why is your solution to the question also the one that lines up with the most convenient access to free games? You're just in it for the gibs, aren't you?

>see my emulators require only the best $1200 PC to run. Heh. A $100 flash cart and a system I've had since I was a kid? That's just too expensive. I only get 4 frames of lag too, bet you never even heard of runahead, s-so what if it only barely works with systems older than the genesis?

I actually legit would like to have multiple PCs for various reasons but KVM switches with DP and USB3 are prohibitively expensive.

The way haveibp handles passwords is through hashes you are supposed to generate your own based on your password on your own computer if you dont trust them and then send only the first half of it to the server and they tell if they have a match from their list

It's embarrassing. Emufags think their cheap knockoffs can even come close to looking like what the developers intended.

I registered to download some FLAC soundtracks, unavailable elsewhere at the time. Site has been around for ages and it has never given me a bad impression, all they did was ask for support, Wikipedia does the same, the bandwidth to provide rom and iso downloads don't come free

Even if you "need" an email, just create a disposable one, like yopmail or evyush(which does work with facebook).
