If you're wondering what a half A press is, read this before commenting to ask. I use a special notation that allows for half A presses. Specifically, if you enter a level already holding the A button, then that A press only counts as half.
As for an A-pressing button that isn't going to happen, here is a little trick you may have been wondering about. Whenever you press the A button, the game will not use the normal A (for balance) or the double or triangle C buttons. Instead, it'll select the A button, making it appear twice! The same is true of both buttons when you hold left or right, but there is no effect when pressing two of the same buttons. This works because the double or triangle C buttons are used for the A release.
I know it's technically a feature, but in practice I use these two buttons for half-A press-out only.
And this goes for double button C's as well. I use half A C's in my double button Cs (see my screenshot). It only works when you press one button while holding the other, when there are two halves, and when there is more than one button being pressed. So Mario's position is a floating point number, but it's converted to a short when the game uses it to test for collision with floor triangles. In other words, Mario's position can basically be any decimal number, but it's converted to an integer between -32, 768 and 32,767 inclusive. So, any fractional portion is truncated and numbers too big or too small are moved into this range using the modulo operator. Graphically, this means that the position used for floor detection is always inside of this box, so if Mario's in that box, then his actual position and the position used for floor detection are the same, albeit maybe off by a single fraction due to the truncation. But if Mario leaves that box, then his actual position and the position used for floor detection will separate. I was able to perform some very sophisticated floor detection experiments where the pixel values were calculated to produce some interesting results.
