I rather think that sad or darkly ambiguous endings have become too common. It's funny, since I was in the same boat as that crowd in my teens, thinking there were too stories which felt as though they had no legitimate stakes since nothing was ever lost and they ended happily, but now I prefer tragedy along the way but consolation at the end, since people seem to have such a hard time making a sad end satisfying enough to warrant it.

Redditors are retarded. You can actually see population growth slowing down in action in that photo. First off, half the people in that photo are spouses, so they can be excluded. Secondly, older generations tended to have more children for a number of factors, namely because disease and injury was less treatable making smaller families more susceptible to being wiped out in a stroke of bad luck - and because America was still strongly agrarian back then and you needed lots of children to help work the farms. So you could assume the original generation (in that photo) was from a family at least the same size as the family they raised. So, six kids. The second generation had substantially fewer kids than their parents. Each family is color coded, and again removing the spouses - they only had two to three kids each on average. Half the family size. And of the grandkids, there's only like 7 great grandkids. Most of them are pretty young yet, with the oldest great-grandkids being around 10~12. So it's hard to say how many kids they will have per family overall - but with divorce rates being what they are, the high costs of living and raising children, and the increased focus on collage - I doubt they can afford more than two or three.
These people can barely understand what exponential growth actually looks like, let alone be able to tell when it's collapsing. Then again, most of those troglodytes probably come from broken families that barely talk to each other or even acknowledge each other's existence outside of funerals and weddings, so their entire conception of a family is only a handful of people atomized and excised from any sort of lineage or family tree. Seeing an actual family that is close enough to arrange a group photo to celebrate their generations is mind boggling and alien to them.
