>The Saints are now a righteous vigilante gang
Makes sense, it was clearly where the series was headed anyway. It was Julius' original intent, and with Gat Outta Hell teasing that alternate universe where everybody was a cop, and with Saints Row 4 and AoM making them literal superheroes, it seems like a fitting choice.
>Realistic, gritty tone
Please, god, no. Nobody wants a dour, depressing SR game. The fact that they're fighting a big corporation and the game is set in a impoverished, dying rustbelt city makes me fear the game would be filled with gray and brown gloom and take itself way too seriously. I know people want a more grounded game after all the wackiness but that would take it way too far in the other direction.

>There's simply nowhere else for them to really go with the fucking earth blown up.
You're severely underestimating the brazen, unapologetic retardation of the franchise. Agents of Mayhem had nothing to do with anything but still had major Saints Row characters, just with altered backstories. Johnny Gat, for example, was no longer a widower and instead a triple-divorcee. Why? Because fuck it.
They could literally just make a sequel to any of the first three SR games with no explanation, or make something entirely new. Have everyone acknowledge the earth blowing up and then laughing it off. That's how goofy the series has gotten.
