Yes, it was stupid. X4 gave more than enough reason to Zero to go maverick without the stupid virus. I think the story convoluted more in X6, but I don't consider that canon. In X5 the virus is something Sigma developed himself to "brainwash" reploids. I think is still stupid, but until that point it still brings interesting points like reploids being able to be "reprogrammed", but then again, that destroys the whole "free will" premise, because free will doesn't exist if you can just be reprogrammed by a fucking virus.
