How often something is used has never been a good way of judging the strength of a weapon. The metafags tend to pickup/drop weapons with the slightest buff/nerf without really thinking about what they're doing, All that aside, the buckets have always been viable.

1) Make sure you have a copy of Splatoon 2 on the latest update (v 4.8.0). For homebrew users, you can download the US version with the latest update here:

We are currently trying our best to get 4.8.0 uploaded for JP/EU versions.
If you are starting with thesse copies, you may need to play the game for a few minutes to get the save file. Then, you can backup the save to your sd card using Checkpoint/EdiZon and add gear/weapons to SplatHeX:

When launching the PC client, it will ask for a server to connect to. When entering the lan server, you will need to enter the domain and port, as well as an "interface number" that corresponds to your device (when in doubt, try each of them until one works). We are currently using frog-skins.com:11451 for any lan-related activities. Someone in the mumble group (wm) is working on getting a LAN server working for us.
Once your pc client is set up, set up a manual connection to the internet on your switch with the following parameters:
IP Address: 10.13.XX.XX
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 10.13.37.1
Primary DNS: 163.172.141.219
Secondary DNS: 24.248.48.62
The DNS servers listed are the 90DNS servers, which block Nintendo's servers. This is useful if you have cfw, but it will also disable you from playing online if you have Switch Online. Use another DNS server (like the one your PC/router uses) if you feel it's more convenient for you to switch between LAN-play and the online servers.
Once that's working, go into the Shoal in the game (pictured building) and then press down Left Stick + L + R for 3 seconds to enter LAN mode. You can then create and search for matches.
3) Get on the fucking mumble server.
There are almost always people on around this time. Don't worry if you sound like an autist. Just get in and get a feel for it. If we can get enough people in, we can get private battles and salmon run going, whether having sessions on Nintendo's servers or making LAN parties. If you need help setting up the LAN shit, we can also help get you up and running. We even had private battles the other day. The video I posted is an excerpt for it. :^)

95% of Salmon Run is full of players who are either purposefully sabotaging their pay grade to stay at lower grades or people too incompetent to be at their current pay grade, who were only there because of morons like me carrying them. They don't understand the fundamentals of the mode, and it's appalling.
A few tips for you:
1. Stingers are priority. If you have a fast shooter or a slosher, go for these immediately. In a pinch, inkjet, splashdown, and bomb rush can help.
2. Flyfish are second priority. You can use inkjet and explosher in their buckets to destroy them if bombs aren't an option. Stingray can cut throw the fish in the center.
3. Use stingray on the mothership as it's approaching the basket. So few people understand that, and it's baffling.
4. When searching for The Gold One, go for the valves farthest away from the basket first. A large pillar of light indicates you are close to it, and a smaller one means you're far away. Don't open valves at random. You'll get overrun by fish.
5. One person on a canon. If two people operate the canon, you won't have enough people to collect eggs.
6. eliter can cut through cohocks. Dynamo can roll over them.
7. Exploit Grillers' pathfinding by changing your height on platforms. You can make them go in an endless back and forth loop if you do this right. Elevators help with this a lot.
8. On glowflies, have everyone stay at a chokepoint near the basket and hold your position. Spreading out is suicide. If you have a roller, have them have roller down and moving as slow as possible toward the fish.
I'm sure there's more, but I've lost track of what I was doing.

No. All you need to know is that there was a war many years ago consisting of the Octarians vs. essentially everyone else in the sea. This was called The Great Turf War. The Squidbeak Splatoon This name is important, a platoon led by Cap'n Cutlefish is of particular note. During the Great Turf War, the Octarians were ahead with numerous victories. However, the Octarians ultimately lost the war. The squids had a superior number of tentacles, you see. 100 years later, Cap'n Cuttlefish still lives on and maintains the new Squidbeak Splatoon in private. In it are his granddaughters, Callie and Marie, who happen to be very popular pop idols and host matches in Inkopolis. The story mode is basically the Octarians stealing the Great Zapfish, and you, Agent 3, defeating the Octarians and getting the Zapfish back.
Anyone who tells you that the Octarians were in the right regarding the Great Turf War are propagandists and should be reported immediately. Octolings are trash and they smell funny. They need to stay in their garbage heaps and in their underground subway tunnels. Also, their music sucks.

Flank. Especially on Kelp Dome, it's big enough with hidden enough side routes for you to get behind the enemy. Your goal should be to murder a backliner or two and then hit the center from the enemy's side. I'm assuming you're dying to jet squelchers because you're coming at them from the front. If you come at them from behind you force them to choose between watching for you and inking the zone. Same principle applies to splatlings, chargers, etc. You are short range, your only way to beat someone with longer range is to get in close before they can start shooting you. If you do get stuck in a straight fight, focus on harassing with torpedoes and keeping yourself alive rather than trying to close for a kill.
That said, your rank went up, which means you're doing fine.

When another weapon outranges you, you can let them take the front line and you stay behind. That's it. If they end up getting splatted and the situation gets bad enough, take a defensive game. Don't worry about not being able to work on the objective for a couple of seconds if it means you can get reinforcements and get a better push.

Which is why you don't aim for a straight up confrontation when the weapon outranges you. Try to aim for a hit from their sides or blind spots. This can depend entirely on the map. With Kelp Dome, like >>16592634 said, don't go through the center: Those paths on the side are there for a reason.

For all we know, you could keep jumping into the frontlines when it is the worst possible time for you to be there with the weapon you have. Again, don't worry about "feeling" you fit in with others. This is just some general advice: Try to stick with your team. You don't always have to go balls deep into enemy lines by yourself. It's better if you can go with your whole team, so that you can get a better push towards your objective. You do not want to overwhelm yourself by pushing in front of your team too hard. It can be easy to get frustrated with your teammates for not sticking with the objective, but aimlessly trying to needle your way into the enemy area won't help (or at least, it won't unless you're one of those 3000 power near TAS-perfect japs who can shoot everything that shows up on their screen). At best, you'll immediately get into a head-to-head confrontation with one of your opponents. At worst, you'll get drilled by all four of your opponents. Remember that your teammates may be as dumb as rocks, but you'll still need them if you really want to push for a win.
Anyway, you really need ink saver sub.
From what I can see, your other main problem is dealing with ink. You take on an aggressive gameplay style, especially with the splat bombs. I would definitely recommend you use at least one main of ink saver sub.
Other than that, you seem pretty comfortable with using that weapon, so I'd say use it again the next time you go into ranked.
Here's a gear setup I'd say to try. You can either adjust the question marks however you like, or use what I have filled in. I checked with Ikaclo and this was all legal, but please double-check to make sure.

This Splatfest has been unusually poor for me. I lost seven of my first ten matches, so I took a break and played Salmon Run and slept. Later, I played twelve more matches and lost six of them, giving me an ending score of 9/22. Usually, I win 3/5 or even 2/3 of my matches. A 10x or 100x match would've helped.
I feel like I got grouped with unusually bad teams, but it's difficult to tell how well you're doing in a team sport like this. There are cases where I'd get splatted once the entire match, but I'd take out five or so of the other team overall, spending most of my time on the enemy side covering their turf and splatting them before they could get through, but then I look at the map and find my team losing the middle horribly. This Splatfest, I've sometimes been trying to build up my special, go to the enemy side to use it, and then build back up there or the middle and do this repeatedly, which is a decent offensive strategy. It seems like my team's been failing me more than I've been failing them. Perhaps this means Team Unicorn is more popular and will win anyway, which would be ironic, since I usually do well and my team still loses, with this clout system. My clout's only around 15,000 now, but it's usually in the 60,000 or 70,000 range. I only play Pro.
I exclusively play the Undercover Sorella brella and have for longer than I've used any other weapon, probably around one hundred and fifty with the brellas overall. It's really satisfying to splat someone before they can destroy the shield or, failing that, use the shield as a buffer to back away and survive. I like this unique weapon more than I ever did the rollers.
Also, I don't like playing a match and finding two booyah bomb specials on the other team. They use it more than anyone else uses any special, because it's so overpowered.

I use them in a way that makes me think I might be better off with Enperry Splat Dualies instead. The lack of range is a shortcoming, and my lightning fast TTK doesn't seem to apply anymore. Mode dominators were Bloblobber and Sploosh-o-matic 7ban these fucking things. Various Splatlings were used to great effect. Despite a 49.9 damage weapon, I was regularly needing four hits to splat. I don't get this game. I'm awful in Port Mackerel. I take the center far too often and can't think outside of this mentality. When we start to lose, I tend to panic and rush a lot more, expecting my team will aid me. I'm wrong to assume this.

Notes: Matchmaking, like always, was unfair. It was generally the best players vs. the worst players(and me) in a number of matches. The bar broke twice, but I still ranked up and made it into the safe zone in the following rank. I'm learning to take more routes in Port Mackerel, rather than hit the center line every time. I'm getting better at advancing and holding the enemy near spawn when we have the advantage. For Blackbelly, I find taking the center tower and holding it to be my best strategy. When sitting near the bottom at the enemy's zone, I can hold that zone fairly well, provided nobody is on the center tower, and can see when people are going to attempt to flank from the halfpipe on their side. Dominators: Me, me, me. I had more splats than anyone most every game, plus often times the most turf covered. There was one particularly good Heavy Splatling Remix and a pair of Custom Dualie Squelchers abusing Main Power Up.

Notes: Rainmaker is the reason I quit ranked, altogether. I had no less than three disconnects on my team this rotation, and not once on the enemy team. Something about this mode really attracts the morons. Power levels were suspiciously low, overall. Seriously, we're talking 1700 teams in S+. Teammates would rarely assist the rainmaker carrier, which was usually me, since nobody wanted to touch the thing. Most teammates insisted that the rainmaker carrier be the front liner. Very few people seem to know about the moving platform shortcut on Ancho-V Games. It seems that hardly anybody knows how to coordinate a push in this mode, and rely on luck to get a push in. Dominators: Me again. I was getting 20+ splats in some matches, but still losing because my teammates can't stay alive for very long. There were a few MPU Bamboozlers, but none of them were any good. Main Power Up can't replace talent. This mode is great when playing with the Mumble squids because people at least know to work together usually. With random people, it's a nightmare world where there is no waking.

Notes: I'm starting to like these maps. I'm managing ink consumption a little better, over-extending less often, and being less reckless. I still exhibit all of these problems, but less so this time around. I'm getting very good at pushing forward when we have the advantage, whereas, I used to sit near the zones, just waiting to get splatted. Booyah Bomb can put a lot of pressure on the enemy when holding the advantage. Matches largely felt fair. I held my own all of the time, and was top squid many times. If I keep this up, I might actually figure out how to play the game properly. Rotation dominators: Kensa Pros, particularly me. Networking felt fair for a change. Very infrequently were people teleporting or splatting me before the animation for their weapon starts, which is fairly frequent usually. Few complaints, other than the game outright refuses to throw me a bone and just let me skip ranks.

Notes: Playing Rainmaker in S+ is like getting into a fist fight with a special needs child. There's a lot of flailing around, spitting, incoherent shouting, you suspect somebody shit their pants, and it's very one-sided. Somebody was particularly confused about the shortcut moving platform and continued shooting it during a push, thinking it would advance to the enemy side. It does not. I find myself too aggressive and rush in wildly, expecting to make a power play and splat at least 3 of the enemy squids myself. Sometimes this happens. I feel like I want to try a weapon that would benefit a lot from Swim Speed Up, as I want to also be the Rainmaker carrier. Mode dominators: Me again and a few Custom Dualie Squelchers with MPU cheese. There was one particularly good Japanese Splattershot Jr. player, but lag may have had a lot to do with that. I shot him no less than six times point blank with a Splattershot Pro before it finally killed him. A good E-Liter is a massive pain in the ass on Ancho-V.

Well, the metafag weapons are currently N-Zap '85, Custom Dualie Squelchers, Kensa Splattershot Pro, Tentatek Splattershot, Clear Dapple Dualies, Bloblobber, and Kensa Splattershot to name a few. Ironically enough, I use many of these, despite not following the meta closely. These are all good except for Bloblobber, which teaches bad habits and doesn't allow you to learn to play properly. I suggest new players grab one of the Splattershots or N-Zaps first to get a feel of the game and branch out from there.

Since you're new to the game, you shouldn't be too worried about getting the "ideal" abilities yet. You should gain some experience in the game before getting concerned about that; exactly which abilities would help you the most depends entirely on how you handle each type of weapon and how offensively/defensively you play. It would be easier to suggest abilities for you once we can see how you stand.
If you really want a starter suggestion to fuck around and get a feel for choosing abilities for yourself, Swim Speed Up, Ink Saver (Both), and Ink Recovery Up are usually safe bets for a general starter build. If you find yourself running out of ink a lot from overusing your weapon and/or sub, use more of Ink Saver (more main if you mostly run out from excessive shooting/sloshing/etc., more sub if you mostly run out from excessive bomb-flinging/wall-throwing/etc). If you find yourself dodging attacks a lot from making pushes often, you could go for Swim Speed Up. If you spend more time moving around than attacking while still facing a constant ink depletion, go for some Ink Recovery Up.

There's method to the madness, but as a new player, abilities aren't that important. Eventually, you'll figure out what you need simply from playing. Not everyone is the same. Weapons play a factor in ability choice later on, too. Weapons like dynamo rollers more or less need ink saver main because they are extremely ink inefficient.

Ink resistance is obligatory for a lot of meta builds. It's not necessary and kind of overrated. The ability system is a mess, and should largely be reworked.

I am not particularly good at Piranha Pit, as I can't seem to position myself very well, and handle the stage very linearly. A Hydra Splatling user by the name Sladderall got so salty with me beating him a few times this rotation, that he decided to squid party the entire time when he was finally on my team. A good charger was always useful for this rotation, and I never had one on my team. I had non-MPU cheese Bamboozlers and Goo Tubers instead. After getting a winning streak, the matchmaking would take me into a lobby with nothing but 2050+ Japanese players, which I'd lose pretty miserably at. Mode dominators: various Splattershots, Custom Dualie Squelchers, and Splat Charger/Splatterscope. I did alright myself, but I never personally controlled entire matches this time around.

Even after "defeating" the statue your octoling only has the option to imagine inkopolis, not return to, not exit to imagine inkopolis
Shortly afterwards splatfests are changed you are now rewarded for conforming with your team and it seems tilted extensively towards Marina even if there was somewhat of a tilt towards Pearl, there was still somewhat of a split with the old calculation.

From what I can gather from this post, they dug themselves into a deep hole complicating the entire setting of this game with all of this unneccesary plot-filling shit and placeholder Squid Sisters. Nintendo would have been better off getting their heads out of their asses and just directly announcing Splatoon on the switch as a direct port, rather than this "It's not a port, it's a sequel" bullshit. At least then there would be a chance at cross-console play and not having to keep throwing shit at the wall until it sticks. Splatoon 2 was a fucking mistake.

Was going to ask for help, but not sure if I want to get better anymore after looking at this video. 8 kills in 5 seconds, that's damn good in ANY shooter.
All my ranks are S+0 except Splatzones which is S+2. I stopped playing for like a year,there's all this new stuff when I came back. No matter what, even if I get kills up to 18 in a match, I always seem to be losing more than I'm winning.
I used to be absolutely killer with the inkbrush, but it hurts my arm playing with that now, so I don't do that as much.

I hit S+0 in everything and didn't touch ranked for a year. Now, just a couple of weeks ago, I started ranked again. I frequently find myself top of a lot of ranked games, getting the most splats, pushing the objective, and overall doing a good job. I still lose. Earlier today, I ranked up from S+6 to S+7 in Splat Zones, only to lose 8 matches in a row and derank back to S+6. I could not win a match to save my life. Whenever I do particularly well, the matchmaking throws me into a match with nothing but 2050+ power level Japanese players, which I get stomped. That hydra video does not represent ranked play. It's not even close. That's a heavily controlled scenario and not analogous with the game. Most S+ players are trash, as are a lot of X rank players. Regarding the Salmon Run picture, I've maxed out the pay grade on non-Grizzco weapon rotations, too. It just requires a decent team and decent weapon selection, which is very much doable.

But I kind of like the video because it shows "hey you need to practice your aim, because I'm noticing I'm missing kills a lot. Like there will be times when I'll be shooting at an enemy who doesn't see me, but my aim is bad, and then he's able to regain the upper hand or escape. I can't help but think "If my aim was better, that wouldn't have happened. Maybe I should practice aiming in the training grounds like in that video". Another thing I'm noticing is that I primarily use the brushes for everything except tower mode, and I've made the observation that my aim has suffered as a result. Brushes are like having a chainsaw, just get close enough to the enemy and you'll kill them, very little aim is needed. Since I used those so much, when I switch to other weapons I find that my aim is poor as a result. So I think it'd be good to practice a little in the training grounds, instead of always having my ass beat. I was pretty good with the squiffer a year ago, but my aim isn't so good with it now.
This is just me kind of rambling at this point, but I notice something when I want to turn on the after burners and use my most deadly weapon, the ink brush. At first when I use the inkbrush, I just get destroyed myself. It's quite frustrating, we're talking 15/16 times you'll die in every single situation. Then it finally gets beaten into your subconscious.
You will NEVER win in a fair fight.
If the enemy sees you, you're already dead, and won't have a prayer of getting close enough to hit them.
With all this anger and frustration, it finally dawns upon you to sneak around like a ninja, wait for your prey to come to you, or pop up from behind a corner, but you're always subconsicously forcing yourself to ambush the enemy…and you begin winning. Also, you gotta be as fast as you humanly can be with the swings, because if you don't kill them in 1 second they will kill you instead. This kind of forces you to be one of those scary ass "ambush & kill in 1 second" type of players, being on the receiving end is very unnerving. I'm just rambling at this point, sorry.

"How important is teamwork"?
I notice during turf wars, that it's so much better to just use the buddy system, and hang around 1 other teammate. After all, when you eventually arrive at a 1vs2 fight, you're probably going to lose. So if you make it a 2vs2 or 2vs1 fight, you're chances of winning are much better. I can see the importance of teamwork in turf wars.
But when it comes to ranked battles, it is very very hard to rely on teammates. Everybody gets picked off so quickly, that any "buddy" you have quickly dissappears. Most of the time, many teammates aren't pushing the objective, and I find myself having to do risky lone wolf stunts to push the objective (usually with little success).
How important do you guys find teamwork in ranked battles? I can barely buddy up with a single teammate for more than 10 seconds to be able to utilize teammates

The biggest thing you'll take out of ranked is that you need to completely carry the team by yourself in order to truly rank up. I had a particularly bad rotation yesterday, and I deranked as a result. My roommate fled the house because he woke up to me shouting about shots phasing through enemies and me being sluggish. Because I couldn't personally take on three or four squids by myself, I lost. Many times. So, to answer your question, you will almost always be stuck with fucking morons on your team, so teamwork is tough. If you fight against a particularly good opponent multiple times and lose to them, by the third or fourth time losing against them, you'll get them on your team, and they'll be absolute dogshit when you need them. Your teams will never synergize, have metafag weapons, or especially good players, and the enemy almost always will. So, again, if you can't carry the team by yourself, you will lose. I couldn't carry yesterday. I couldn't do it for 8 fucking matches in a row and I deranked because I'm a fucking loser who can't get it together.

I can't begin to tell you my frustration while carrying the rainmaker, riding the tower, or running a power clam. They will always let you down. I can be holding on to the rainmaker for what feels like 30 seconds, holding off the entire enemy team in hopes of my own team comes in and helps, only to have them fuck off on the other side of the map because there was a square inch of uninked territory that they just have to cover to fill their special gauge, leaving me to finally succumb to getting splatted because fucking rainmaker is not a god damn solo endeavor.

When your team works with each other, you get quick and easy knockouts. When they don't, you pull your hair out. It's ideal and important, but unlikely to occur.

It's because a majority of Splatoon players are fucking morons. They don't think about potential actions of their teammates and opponents, and instead are too focused on their own specific strategy.

I'm a shooter main, and I know too well what you mean. People tend to swim away faster than I can splat them, whereas, I fail to accomplish this myself. I got so frustrated with shooters that I often times found myself rushing into enemies, missing my shots, have them recover and finish me off immediately. For a time, I gave it up and went to Splattershot Jr. for splat bombs, ink armor, and backing up friendly front liners. I became a more proactive player by simply changing to other weapons. I mained Tentatek Splattershot for 400 - 500 hours, which proved fruitless. I went to Splattershot Pro for the range and shot variance and back to N-Zap, cheesing the ability to run fast and shoot. I'm better as a result.

I was more active in the Splatoon 1 threads, always making tons of advice pics and posting fan art images.
I was the inkbrush guy who would even play with his controller broken. I joined the mumble for a while, there was a guy there (think his name was barrel) who would always call the squid beakons "direct tv" all the time.
I also remember I'd sometimes scour pixiv for hours just looking for fan art pictures to post to these threads.
I'm looking at the advice pictures I made back then, and wonder what I was thinking because they're so overly detailed with info that's now half obsolete. I mean, wow, that's a huge amount of research I did . I don't remember half of them, but I do remember thinking this movement speed one (last image) was supposed to be the big big one that was like my magnum opus or something. I remember for hours I would be measuring movement speed by some meticulous method of walking in straight lines & counting the frames with recorded video, dozens of times with each weapon (just walking in a straight line was hard enough to do with analog sticks). Later on I found the japanese wiki that told you the run speed through hacking the file data, and that was so much easier.
Damn, I can't believe I did all this, I mean who needed to know all what the five jump heights are.
