To invoke Lovecraftian horror you need to deconstruct values that our culture is based on. You need to basically take the world build by the ideas of Christianity and classical philosophy and show it as a lie. You have to show the world as a chaotic, absurd place, that we think is orderly because of our lack of knowledge.
A good way to get into moodset for Lovecraftian writing is looking at bad art. Basically think about something like feminist ""art"" pic related, the grotesque, disgusting things that we feel horrible about looking at. And then think about the fact that there is nothing proving that this piece of art is anyhow worse than the beautiful things we've created in the past. Doesn't matter if you believe it or not, just let that thought into your head so it can instill fear in you. There is no God, and no objectivity, we're merely playing by our own made-up rules which are false. Now expand that thought to other things like moral behaviour and so on, add beings/forces that operate above the rules we have thought up and potray them in your story.
That's how you create a Lovecraftian work.

To invoke Lovecraftian art you need two things : to show that science is inefficient in showing how secure you are in the universe like it did in Lovecraft's age when they started talking about space travel(hence the gods residing in outer space) and how people started being really into oceanography and submarines, discovering a whole new world beneath us(hence Lovecraft's fascination with the deep) and then you link the two and their similarities(gods reside either in outer space which is unknown or deep below the sea where no man can reach and only sunken cities are) and then use your imagination. Don't even describe the horror describe what the characters appear to see in their madness.
The fact that HP found niggers and arabs to be as spoopy as the germs, deap sea and the infinite cosmos spoke more about him as a person rather than a writter. Not that I disagree with the guy but the idea has always been "spooky, unexplained, indescribable, unfathomable horror of the unknown" and the tentacles happened to be in vogue during his time. Now that we have explored some parts of the sea, the closest thing to an unknown monster would be something like in the first Alien movie or The Thing by Carpenter instead as Lovecraftian horror.

That's the thing. When Lovecraft was writing his stories, "horror" wasn't even a genre (apparently it wasn't until a few years after his death). Lovecraft himself called his works "weird fiction" and added his infatuation with fear-of-the-unknown to them. He always made the threatening entities frightening to the main characters because he felt that this was the best way to explain to the reader the sheer unsettling strangeness that the main character has just encountered.
And, of course, fear-of-the-unknown works best when you either only suggest what has just been encountered instead of explicitly stating it (Imprisoned with the Pharaohs is a good example), or don't even mention what it is and instead show its affect on the people/environment around the main character (The Temple and The Colour out of Space are FUCKING FANTASTIC examples of this).
Lovecraft pretty much mastered horror without even trying because he actually put effort into his works, which is something that all the "I'm making a Lovecraftian-[insert generic bullshit]" people will never understand. (Come to think of it, all the people who try to take something and say "this is ours, now" tend to not understand a fucking thing about it.)

Not in a 3D space they can't, but they could in a 2D space, which we simulate. Much like how you can simulate a 3D space, which we live in, but can also make a simulation of. Simulating 2D spaces is critical for basic math because all of basic geometry requires you to assume a 2D space can exist for mathematics purposes. And to simulate something you just need to base it off of axioms. A 2D space could be built off of the axioms generated by Euclid. Euclidean geometry for instance literally can't exist in our universe, because non of it's rules for plane geometry make sense when applied to objects with 3 dimensions. For example, Euclidean geometry would state that two parallel lines can never meet. However, on a 3D sphere, parallel can intersect, on the earth the latitude lines meet at the poles. Yet Euclidean geometry is still useful for various tasks even though we exist in a non-euclidean space. It's similar to how the number i is a vital part of a lot of equations even though it can not exist. Literally all games exist as data in a simulation anyway though so this complaint makes no sense for as far as game development and no further.

I know you're trying to explain how a 2D object can't exist in a 3D space but you're wording it wrong. I think the major issue with trannies is that they think or get deluded into believing that transitioning will make them look like the tiny % of MtF ones that can pass much easier (like in the spoiler) but instead end up just being the common and easily spotted hideous man-faced transwoman.

But it's roguelite and quite boring. Lore Finder at least has a difficulty curve implementation in metroidvania that I've never seen before, the map slightly modifies itself with each upgrade, the game starts empty and easy and ends populated and nightmarish. Metroid and ESA do that too, but in specific moments and not in every upgrade.
The main premise of metroidvanias and cosmicism align themselves so well that I can only wonder how the fuck nobody thought about that before. It's really shame that they forced gay shit to the theme, this would be amazing as a normal game.

IMHO this especially holds true in horror fiction, where the atmosphere and tension can easily take a hit if the story/game drags on too long – it is (nigh) impossible to keep the horror atmosphere going for too long. The best part of Headfirst’s 2004 game ‘The Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth’ is the tense and atmospheric parts where you investigate Innsmouth and eventually find yourself being hunted by the Esoteric Order of Dagon. After you make your escape from the town and are forced to partake in the gov’ment raid the game falls apart and becomes yet another FPS game, a buggy one at that. If it had kept the focus on the lone protagonist exploring/investigating the case that brought him to Innsmouth and subsequent escape, and kept that for four/five hours, I think it would have been a very enjoyable game. In any case, turning it into an over-the-top shooter were you fight Dagon is absolutely a mistake.
How would your dream Lovecraftian/cosmic horror game best balance the story vs gameplay side of it, and keep it scary and unsettling?
I would definitely avoid reusing monsters you may encounter, which would only end up detracting from the horror. Also, the ideal design for some eldritch horror would easily be something like H. R. Giger’s unused ghost designs for ‘Poltergeist II’; asymmetrical, weird, grotesque and otherworldly – not a bipedal, symmetrical boss chasing you.
