Having just finished both vanilla DOOMs, Heretic and Hexen, both hell revealeds and Preacher I realized I did not play either Final Doom's Plutonia or TNT. So I decided to give those a try, with the Final Doomer weapon mod since five wads in a row with Doom's original weaponset got a bit stale.
Just finished Plutonia today, it started off fun enough but quickly went downhill post Map 11: Hunted(the one where you're up against 18 archviles in a maze). It doubled down on the chaingunner traps and snipers, with a lot of "gotcha ha ha should have had your BFG out and firing as you went into this teleporter, sucker" moments. By map 25 I was practically forcing myself to get through all the archvile and chaingun spam and I just wasn't having much fun.
TNT on the other hand started off a blast and is so far(map 6) a massive improvement. The levels are small, nice and tight with fights taking place in really well designed corridors and rooms, and the Final Doomer class for this wad changes the weaponset to something based on lots of fire-rates, so the SSG is a four shell burst shotgun like Shadow Warrior's Riot Shotgun, the regular shotgun is a spas-12 with a fixed pellet spread and the chaingun are dual uzis which are nothing but dakka, but are weaker compared to the chaingun or Pluntonia's assault rifle. The weapon designs combined with the black gloves and the tight corridors and small map fights makes me feel like a smooth operator, it's pretty good so far and I like the new music. I just hope it stays of that quality.
I'm planning on playing the other three megawads supported by final doomer, Japanese Community Project, Back to Saturn and Ancient Aliens. Should I just continue playing with their respective classes as given by final doomer or am I missing out on not playing with vanilla weapons? I'm not really feeling like FDoomer breaks the balancing of the game(maybe a bit with Plutonia's hitscan HMG which decimated everything and I found using a lot to counteract the "archvile/chaingunner sniping you from a distance" design in Plutonia, and the lack of TNT's long ranged weapons I feel is completely in favor of the map design in TNT.
Any recommended mapsets for High Noon Drifter, Demonsteele and GMOTA?

I played the standard game on Veteran and everything that wasn't a Hell Knight and maybe a Mancubus (how much are there in the game? 3 or 4?) was kind of a joke, how easier was it outside of the using the flashlight at any time since there are at least two sections that seem to depend on that?

Easy mode has more health and armor pickups (because it wasn't easy enough, apparently), ammo pickups have been increased in general, many enemy encounters were removed, and armor no longer slowly decays when greater than 100.
There's a lot of really dumb changes, too, like many of the advanced PC options being removed, the fov being lowered, there being a limited number of save slots, and unskippable cutscenes.

Yeah in HoDB you can imbue magic into some weapons on top of more traditional spellcasting. It's a ridiculous mod, but also immensely satisfying to play. There's an alpha release of one where you play as a Revenant too.

If you did dig EP1 and EP2, you probably like EP3. Apparently there's less of framerate issues I never got them and as for levels itself, they are varied, ranging from tomb, to cycloid homeworld, jungle level to decrepit installation. If the EP2's highlight was the Shadow Warrior levels, this one's highlight is huge Egypt hub, as in Hexen. The levels are even more ambitious now, makes you wonder if the people behind it can top 'em in next episode. Which probably comes in 5 years. Also the ending left me wanting more, and I haven't yet patched the game, I had a bug with sniper scopes that kept crashing game for instance. Gonna try the "Professional" Difficulty next when I have time.

Reload triggers a boring-ass kick, but when under the effect of Berserk it becomes legendary and you can dragon kick enemies into the milky way, quite literally. Smashing enemies with a floor tile works well too. What other mods do over the top melee, besides GMOTA and Demonsteele?

Holy fuck what a level. I think I'm starting to understand why I enjoy TNT over Plutonia.
Plutonia is basically a slaughterwad, it spams revenants and archviles and cyberdemons at you in large areas with lots of cells and rockets so you can go wild with the BFG while circlestrafing, and that's pretty much the one note plutonia has going for it. Every level has at least two archviles, two dozen revenants and a chaingun trap. And it just gets boring after a while, with a lot of levels feeling like you should have quicksaved to not get torn up when the walls opened with 6 chaingunners on both sides or when you got teleported into an area with 4 archviles on all four sides while a Cyberdemon is beneath you. It just doesn't have much restraint.
TNT's design is on the other end. It relies on tight corridors and rooms while you go up against imps, zombiemen and pinkies and tests your ability to go into a room, pick out all the hitscanners while using pinkies/specters and imps as meatshields to avoid damage. It so far reminds me of why I really enjoyed episode 1, but I feel the maps could be a bit larger(as in less corridors where imp fireballs are outright impossible to dodge). I thought the dual uzis that came with FD were just a shittier chaingun(in a way they are), but I'm coming around to the higher firerate and ammo magazines and I'm thinking that if they had the chaingun's accuracy I would just snipe shit from across the map to save myself the health instead of getting upclose and personal.
I REALLY hope TNT stays on this quality because contrasted with the last few days of boredom thanks to Plutonia's last 10 levels, these last two days have been an absolute blast with these TNT levels.

I've been thinking back on why I liked Heretic so much, but disliked Plutonia since they pretty much share similar level design beats. I've arrived at the conclusion that Heretic is a lot more lenient with ammo(considering that every enemy drops almost every ammo type, not just the first two) and with everyone being a projectile enemy with virtually no hitscan or undodgable attacks(you can make a case for the iron lich tornado which seems to exist solely to make E3M1's ending a pain in the ass). Otherwise I can't really think of what Heretic did right that I thought plutonia did wrong.

I can't really see a comparison between the two, except maybe the overuse of monster closets. Even then, as you pointed out, there are no hitscan enemies, no bullshit like Arch-Viles, and even the ones with homing projectiles are not such a problem since they don't do heavy damage or are easily avoided. Revenants can do almost a full health bar in a single hit if you roll bad.

It's more or less that with Heretic resources are much more lenient. more health, more ammo, you have at least one tomb of power on you every level so you can clear out tougher rooms easier or get the ability to gloves of the necromancer+face chainsaw back your entire health if you no longer have any health.
Also I don't feel Archviles are bullshit, more or less the way they're used in Plutonia and Hell Revealed. I've never enjoyed treating doom like a musou and just sticking a shitton of enemies in front of you in an open area and practically telling you to "just BFG it dude". That's not fun in the slightest after you do it more than twice.

Assuming the wiki is right, they're not nearly that bad. Even their red axes are 7-56. Green are a pathetic 2-16. The risk with them is that they can, I think, fire through each other if the ghost variety which is always red, and you risk taking multiple at once. But even those are slow, and don't relentlessly chase you like Revenant missiles.

I've completely burned out on TNT(map 20). Ever since map 14 I believe it feels like the map design has shifted from "go fast, hit hard, kill shittons in tightly packed rooms and corridors" to "go into room with very small assortment of enemies, mostly barons/cacos/pain elementals, then flip a switch and run around a bit trying to figure out what that switch did because progression is a bit odd and where you're meant to be progressing and where secrets are supposed to be is a blurry line".
Onto Jap Project I suppose.

An updated version of Sigil has been released on Romero's website. Eye switches are fixed to work properly so you don't end up breaking the maps and killing the spider mastermind on map 8 no longer ends the map prematurely.

Like 1/4th of the rooms are pitch black for some reason, there are too many segments involving extremely thin walkways surrounded by unescapable lava pits to count and the final map is just all around boring, plus the decorations and design are nothing special at all. Anyway, it really depends on the mapset but it is more mazey that modern zoom zoom games. I would say that there's no shame in looking up a YT vid if you get really stuck, because if you're more used to objective markers and modern "map design" you may not be in the same mindset as the mappers were back in the 90's. Generally though, flip every switch, automap is your friend, use your ears because lots of secrets open by walking over specific areas. You'll get the feel eventually and understand what's expected of you. Latter half of Doom 2 is still filled with shit though.

Also I just finished the Life's a Beach expansion for Duke and it was so much fun and so well designed that it made me depressed at the current state of the FPS genre. My only complaints are that there was no jetpack and there was way too much shotgun ammo

The depressing thing about it is I like the majority of the maps in terms of appearance but it's ruined by the monster placement. Also heaven help you if you play fake multiplayer because it adds a boatload of extra enemies, like the first map has Revenants accompanying the first shotgunners and a Spider Mastermind in the main courtyard area. Evilution does similar shit with a Cyberdemon in that one outdoor area in its first map, but at least has things like the BFG9000 from the get-go like Doom 2 does.

Seconding this question since it's been plaguing me lately and Doom 2 or Evilution seems the best balance as far as bosses and finding blueprints. In general though with DRLA I suggest the following.
- Use its monster pack. Vanilla monsters don't stand a chance against anything remotely high-end.
- Set its starting danger level to max so you get punished at least somewhat for knowing the master assemblies and such.
- Use LegenDoom Lite with legendary rate either 100% or at max rate and bosses at 100%. This forces more high-end item drops.
It's unfortunate that OBLIGE does not have a DRLA mode, because that would seem a perfect fit. Also how much of this mod have you played?

I tried Demolitionist class in DoomRL Arsenal with Plutonia. It can be fucking broken. The half ammo consumption perk, while ammo isn't scarce, means you can chain-fire a stock BFG9000 5 times not just 2, which also explains their odd starting capacities. This applies to the nuclear ones too, and if you have the armor that doubles the charge rate, it becomes a default weapon. Worse than that is I actually acquired the Unmaker on the second map in Plutonia which also has halved ammo drain, and like other demonic weapons (at least ones I've seen: Hell's Reign and Soulstorm Rifle) it starts out mediocre but becomes monstrous if upgraded. On top of that the immunity to splash damage is top-tier against a lot of troublesome monster types and the lingering effects of certain barrels.
tl;dr: Don't just play as Technician. He's good but the other classes have their own good sides too.

Knee Deep in the Dead. It's a really good level and quintessentially Doom. Inferno is a runner up because of how cool it looks visually even though the mazes are a little clunky. Shores of Hell is a weird middle ground and definitely has the more goofy level design but it's perfectly playable. After playing both dooms I must admit 1 had way better levels overall than 2. I really like monster closets full of hitscanners that pop out from behind you and spamming cacodemons. The good thing is that you get a super shotgun to deal with the madness so I can't complain too much.
My favorite wad is probably ashes 2063. It felt a bit short on both the amount of levels and weapons/monster variety, but it's polished really well. I can never get enough of post-apoc settings.

Just finished Sigil. It feels to me like the antithesis of nuDoom in many ways.

Gave Going Down another shot. All the problems I've mentioned are there and they're even worse than I remember. The levels usually give you zero room to maneuver and cram shitloads of enemies in tight areas. Loads of hitscanners at close range with no cover, frequent cacodemon and pinky gang rape and some traps that pit you against a bunch of demons on on each side of a tunnel barely wide enough for you. The levels are quite creative, but with the initial novelty wearing off it's just pure frustration.

Pretty meh, I'd give it 6/10. Weapons feel weak, enemies don't seem very diverse in terms of behavior (completed first 3 episodes), super tome of power mode is hideously overpowered and impossible to use to a good efficiency except in boss fights. They should halve all ammo caps and pickups, double weapon damage, and remove soul mode in lieu of decent altfires. I always think a good metric for weapons and enemies is that if you can't make a level using only a single enemy type or single weapon be interesting, you should go back and rethink them. This game certainly fails that test.

I dropped nuDoom because the mandatory finishers were braindead. But recently I found a mod which disables them, and surprisingly it holds up.
Check it out, it's got a generic name like Weapons Mod 2016 on moddb. Basically, enemies skip the groggy phase and just die; what's more, they don't drop items like in Borderlands, so you are given a siphon grenade early, to heal.

I replayed Doom 4 after spending a lot of time with 1,2, and 3 this past month. I like it a lot less than I did in 2016 but I don't think its terrible either.
The main problem I have is how much it relies on locking you in a room and spawning in a bunch of monsters. The only way to win is to run around like a headless chicken taking pot-shots at whatever gets in your way, taking even a second to assess what you're up against and respond accordingly gets you killed.
Outside of those arena parts, the level design is fine but so many of the room and corridors are empty. In past games this was the exception, not the rule. The infrequent encounters during regular gameplay are so much better than the regular arena parts. Doom 3 almost got it right but relied on monster closet too heavily.
Eternal is looking more like the kind of thing I want so I'm hopeful for it.

In my experience it generally correlates pretty well, at least with shooters. Doom doesn't fully pass that standard, but it does for most enemies because the other mechanics are solid. I think the best example of it is FEAR, which doesn't really have many enemy types but you could easily make a level with nothing but riflemen and create interesting and challenging scenarios. Amid Evil has a bunch of really generic enemies that aren't very interesting on their own at all as a rule, relying more on visual diversity than gameplay diversity to keep the player interested. That's just my opinion though, you should try it and see if you think the same.

I'm actually playing Amid Evil and I agree that the enemy variety (gameplay wise) isn't impressive. It serves as mindless fun while listening to some podcast/stream, but it's not much more than that. Dusk did better with both gameplay and level design. I do like AE's graphics, though: it's a better way of doing "retro" looks.
As an aspiring gamedev, your comment on single enemy/weapon levels as a metric has got me thinking though. Maybe this is an interesting criteria to try and measure up to.

You learned a retarded meme from retrokids, congratulations. Brutal Doom's snap and kill gameplay is derived from military shooters, while Doom 4 has bullet sponge enemies that you're supposed to kill in a constantly moving deathmatch.
If anything, nuDoom copied Metroid Prime: not only with the fluid floaty feeling, but specifically the fights against the chozo wraiths (you were boxed in a room with fast moving targets, strafing between shots). The fatalities are nothing new or exclusive to BD, think Condemned.
What sets Brutal and nuDoom close, is the retarded internet memes around super duper doomguy. That 99% of suckers ITT swallow down ever happy. I have been trying to play though Plutonia, but map25 is just really cheap with how it behaves, it is pretty bothersome because the maps are generally really good when they aren't trying to trick the player into teleporting/spawning into a pit of monsters, but then certain maps or parts of maps will leave a bad taste. I have to redo plutonia anyway because I overwrote my autosaves checking out TNT. It's fun but gets bothersome. The levels are pretty straightforwards and its hard to die, I guess it's trying to trick me into getting killed more? Maybe, practice makes perfect, and I wont notice this difficulty later

There was a cool WAD where you could use magic and sword hack n' slash, throw a hammer and it would hit and bounce off walls, or maybe you could wall hop, I forget. Note this is on page 16 and someone probably needs to start a new thread. OP also needs to link that one Doom video, I don't have the link but it iterates over some of the more common mods and is a good starting point for questions like that.
To answer you a bit though, it's Metroid Dreadnought Overhaul and that has things like 3D modelled guns not sprites, also it's mostly mods that require GZDoom, and cannot work in ZDoom or Zandronum, but there are exceptions to this. Besides Metroid weapons, there's also UT99 (Doom Tournament), Quake 3 (Hunter's Moon), and Half-Life+OpForce (Lambda). All are very faithful-feeling and I recommend them.
If you want a straightforward mod, GMOTA (probably the magic-sword one you're thinking of), Demonsteele, Hearts of Demons Baron (also the Revenant one though it's not finished) and High Noon Drifter are great. The last can also be paired with Pirate Doom via a compatibility patch. More complex ones would be Lithium, DoomRL Arsenal and Wrath of Cronos. Usually you want to pair a weapon and monster mod, the latter has DoomRL Monsters and Colourful Hell as primary options.
If you like Jojo, or hell, even if you don't, check out the Dio Brando mod, it's really neat and the time stop knife throwing alone makes it worth it. That sort of feature is actually not uncommon in other mods, I know it's on a gun in Russian Overkill, an armor in DRLA, and the Dead Man's Holster in High Noon Drifter, and naturally, the mod that lets you play as Kira which is also not bad.
For helper mods, autoautosave is really helpful if you aren't good at remembering to. Episodic-EX is nice for making Ultimate Doom and Heretic continuous for some mods that might need a longer play time. Target Spy and DamNums are just nice if you want an idea of damage output or monster status. Legendoom Lite makes random monsters legendary so when damaged they get Nightmare! speed and higher HP/damage, but also drop items. Demon Counterstrike adds periodic random monster and item spawns to keep you on your toes.

I don't think so that should be monster closets under trap style, if I remember right gotchas are extra monsters spawned on top of your regular quantity setting.

That doesn't make any sense, gotchas sound like bullshit traps like monster closets or those walls with invisible monsters and shit.

I don't think it's guaranteed it's just a chance to have extras spawned somewhere, I don't use that setting it might be like extra traps you pick up an item and there are imps around the corner you just cleared or some extra strong barons in the exit room.

Thanks. Yea it was demonsteele that I saw footage of a while back. I tried Metroid Dreadnought, somewhat decent. Pirate Doom says I need doom 2 apparently, and MM8DM was pretty fun the first 3 levels. Too bad the story is a deathmatch, but still is fun.
I'll keep your games in mind for the next set of WADs to try.
