That's actually not too farfetched.

I also tought about this when I was trying Saturn Bomberman out and stumbled on the "wide" battle stage, that is just a fucking huge stage where 12 players have to navigate while looking like ants on the screen.

I bet if someone actually tried making a Bomberman Battle Royale it would work better than Tetris 99, and that worked surprisingly well.

The area expands, you retard. The battlefield starts off cluttered with a lot of brick blocks that limit the space you can traverse. Once everyone starts blowing up the blocks, the area expands for all players because there is now more ground to walk upon.

I don't think you remember it fondly. Once the timer is at a certain point, the map begins to shrink. Similar to how PUBG does it with it's blue zone. You can see this around 4:10 in vid related.

Shrinking battlefields is a really common approach to implementing Sudden Death in games. Worms does something similar with the rising water level.

Really though the big pull of Battle Royale is the scale. It's that "be the last standing out of 100 people" part which gets people interested. In a way, it's actually derived from hardcore pvp in MMOs (complete with permadeath and player looting), but put in a context where players don't mind loosing all their shit every time they die.

"Battle royale" used to be a catch-all term for a free for all gamemode with last man standing rules. In fact, Bomberman titles have used the term "battle royale" to describe their multiplayer mode (when other modes are available). It's a shame that the term was co-opted to refer to a genre made up entirely of shit games, even though the usage is correct.

Especially super obscure games like that chess bomberman for ps1 that I played in japanese and never understood what the fuck was happening but still managed to beat the lava dude at one of the corners of the map.

Attempting to replay recently, but it's just way too slow

The issue isn't about being able or not to replay them, unless you're a redditor or any other flavour of casualniger, it's about the sad fact that these kinds of games and times will never come back or capitalize on untapped potential. Only normalniggers hate untapped potential because it includes thought and work from both devs and players to become reality.
