It's mostly self-explanatory from what I remember. You can fiddle with the settings in the preferences tab (signified by the grey gears) and in there you can choose your options.

You'll need both to hook and translate the game. Start up ITH first and then TA. Then start up the visual novel. In ITH look for the game's exe and accept it. The in-game text (Japanese) should show up after clicking on the game itself to progress the text, and if it doesn't then open the little bar on ITH and scroll down until the text appears legible. In TA you'll want to choose Google for the translator and keep connected to the internet to work.

I think the the best hypothetical comparison example would be a war scenario, it can have boring moments, but there is guaranteed excitement, even if it is mostly sickening, in a more fantastical version (which I called realistic-ish) you would have war events perfectly fit any traditional story structure, be it the Hero Journey or just a simple freytag triangle, protagonist's friends die or get severely damaged at a convenient pace, tension tends to accumulate and alleviate in a rhythm, some characters can get special moves once a while (high risk actions where he would normally die but manages get out unharmed), the war can conveniently follow the story pacing ending after the climax, also the story is guaranteed to have either a happy ending or a nakige tear jerker finale but in anyway you have a good sense of closure, in a more mundane history, you have action happening at completely random intervals, some people can get deep character building only to die unexpectedly, everyone fights as cowardly and tactically as possible, "heroes" get killed easily, grey morality is prevalent even if either side has a good cause, soldiers act somewhat cruelly and most times brutally effective, not the token anti-hero character, everyone involved, the war can continue forever or end abruptly, none of which has anything to do with the main character, speaking of which, he can get mained, get tortured or even die. The ending is obligatory bittersweet, some things are gained, others are lost, the sense of closure is optional. I don't mean to "desconstruct" all the fun factor from the plots, but let it flow naturally from the events, every skirmish in a war is a freytag triangle, the action and the tension is there, but this time nobody has plot armor.
It's really hard to talk about this topic because even our basic of perception of reality is kinda delusional, this can get boringly philosophical really quick.

Downloaded Rance X recently. Cuck/vg/'s /haniho/ had useful links to things that allow it to be played with machine translation right now - Visual Novel Reader, a program that extracts text threads and uses translation engines to translate them, Capture2Text as image recognition tool for everything that's not dialogue and Translation Aggregator for translating things captured with C2T.
While results so far have been good - game script is simple enough that it's possible to make out ~80% of the dialogue just by guessing what it should be from the TL, C2T simply fails when it's time to translate data from cards because of the way background fucks with ability text most of the time - see picrelated for specific examples. It even fails with zoomed-in screenshots. Are there any better tools for recognizing text from images other than C2T?
And yes, the game is great so far, even if it's RNG at times.

Do you not watch much anime or things? I have always seen this a common idea. If I remember correctly this is even in stories that are required reading in the Language classes in high, though they take place in Edo or Sengoku era. Also this idea isn't just in Japan, it was also a popular topic in ancient Greece and Rome, though usually homosexual in that nature. In Japan though I would not say this is a rare story type, and rather common. Though of course it will get you fired in the real world and is for most just a fantasy.

I suppose I see your point, but honestly I never liked the comparisons of H visual novels to porn or pornography. I mean in porn you have drugged up worthless whores (male and female) molesting each other for money on camera.
Whereas in H-vidya, or visual novels, you have sex scenes but with stories that either have some kind of character development, some level of fun or narratives that can be immediately arresting, engaging and even emotionally impressive. If we consider this then we can see why, as visual novels became more prominent and over time grew more daring, VNs aimed at women (otome) were rarely sexually explicit but VNs aimed at men often involved some kind of sexual scene, even eventually manifesting an entire subgenre of visual novel which has games the focus primarily on sex– nukige.
I suppose that's why we really don't see nukige aimed at girls and why we don't see the kind of stories or scenarios you'd find in otome games in male-aimed VNs.

It's more common to have the hallmark romance movie with the drying up ovaries career woman scoring the handsome successful businessman/doctor/lawyer. Very rarely would you get a story of a 20 year old man and a 35 year old woman, or something similar. I know someone who was writing a novel around that idea and he confided in me that his very feminist editor was incredibly uncomfortable with the idea of that story. Probably couldn't articulate why, but it's probably to due with women's natural proclivity to hypergamy. It's certainly more of a male fantasy to be a young man in the sights of a cougar than the /ss/ reversal scenario. I think it also rubbed this woman the wrong way because it is a love story about a younger man aggressively pursuing the romantic interest of an older woman instead of the other way around which is more common in this uncommon type of story. That too is also a very male fantasy of sexual conquest of a mature woman by a much younger man. See, if the sexual appeal of such a story is directly attendant upon the attractiveness of the target of the young man's desires. The more sexually attractive the woman is, the less women are interested and the more it appeals to men. The less attractive she is, the better the women reading the story can self-insert.
This is why most YA novels have very blandly designed female protagonists (also because rampant Mary Sues).
I think it's also why otome games lean heavier onto "cute" designs and faces for their protagonists, always making the female protagonist cute but never giving her more than an average bust, average hips and so on. Her hair and eye color can be unique but her physical form has to be just vaguely decent at best.
Some say this is because women will have an almost instinctive negative reaction towards a woman they would find, even in fiction, to be competition. They would feel challenged by her and so they couldn't really self-insert.
On that note: Conversely, male characters both in novels and games that incorporate physical challenges (like fighting) are typically designed to be attractive in some notable way, but that's just natural consequence of designing a man who can do his job. If a man is capable of throwing-down he has to be physically capable of it, and if he's physically capable of it then he's typically (even with superpowers) going to appear so since strength is evidenced by physical fitness, which also happens to be the chief trait of a man's physical attractiveness.
So by necessity to the plot male characters are almost always attractive, like women (also because people like reading about attractive, capable, competent and interesting characters), but the attractiveness of a female protagonist is usually very low if utterly nonexistent in YA novels (otome games at least give her a cute face, if she's given a face; we all know VNs can also tend to have protags without eyes).
Of course the opposite sex and potential love interest(s) of the protagonist will always be ideally attractive, too. That's for all stories aimed at either sex (unless it's written by an unlovable spiteful Marxist spinster).

So I asked around and did a bit of reading. I opened a thread on a Futaba refugee board to ask your question and to see how the Nips themselves react to the recent DMM/Fanza+Google Analytics survey. Many of the replies are one liners assertions, have no argumentation, nor proofs, and some posts are contradicting each other so taking their words for granted is silly. As I would expect from former 2ch/5ch migrants. I blame Japanese schools for failing to nurture critical thinking and inquisitive spirits to their pupils.
However, what should be noted is that there were consistent complaints of Netori and Netorare being grouped in the same category on the survey, probably owing to the possibility that the targeted demography for each genre are different. Look at reply number 3, 13, 14 for those instances. Their complaints were reflected on Pixiv Dictionary and Nicopedia. The former acknowledges the ambiguity for the word NTR. Meanwhile, according to the latter, in the matter of labeling, there are 2 groups in the fanbase: ones who label Netorare as NTR and Netori as NTL, and the other who label Netorare as NTRR and Netori as NTR. So not only that the fanbase size seems hard to measure, but they aren't well defined and haven't been able to reach a consensus yet. At this condition, the possibility of drawing a scientific conclusion is extremely unlikely.

This most likely be the cultural extension behind Tatemae and Honne, which I elaborated earlier. A direct consequence of Tatemae/Honne in daily life is one should keep their opinion to themselves, especially ones that might offend others.
Perhaps the lack of NTR labeling consensus itself stem from this part of culture.
But let's make a little logical leap and assume some posts in that thread were true. Some posts assert that NTR aren't popular, but some do. Amongst those bickering posts, the one with reply number 19 seemed interesting because it actually had a reasoning, unlike all other posts.
It asserted that Netori is very popular, specifically because Netori overlaps with Humiliation fetish, while Netorare isn't too popular because Masochism isn't popular too. Let's assume that post is true, then look at the survey again, and you'll see lots of overlaps.
First, the 2nd position was 「人妻」. In English fandom it would be translated as "Cheating" but that itself is a bit inaccurate. 「人妻」 in porn speech means other person's wife, and this word specifically refers to the fetish of sleeping with other persons' wives.
Second, the 4th position was 「熟女」, meaning attractive mature women, but according to Pixiv, it specifically refers to women in their 30s to 50s. This overlaps with many other highly popular fetishes/preferences, namely big breasts, curvaceous body and gentle personality.
How do those two fetishes overlaps? Mature women are most likely married. In Japan, it is generally agreed that 「適齢期」, or marriageable age is around late 20s to early 30s, but particularly on this decade it has increased, from early to late 30s, most likely due to Abenomics which encourages women to work, and delay marriage as a consequence. Add the two fetishes' overlap onto Netori and you'll see what seems to be popular in DMM/Fanza: stories about sleeping with other persons' mature wives.
So in this approach, the DMM/Fanza+Google Analytics survey does seem to be consistent and might be true, but what lead to a rather uncanny conclusion was the cultural insensitivity of Google to lump multiple genres into one.

As I stated before, the discussion should veer towards deviants and not normal people. Moreover, such love/survival dichotomy doesn't even exist because it implies that you can't have the one without the other, even though you could. This, included with the trend that husbands going far away to work and only to come back for once a week lead to booming prostitution industry. Because men just need to wind off after working long hours, right?
Men do not see sexual fidelity as a duty in their married life, and their wives do not see that as a problem. More over, women simply brush that fact, thinking that it's just a male thing for desiring sex, with or away from their wives.
Japanese women also cheat, in some cases more frequently than their men, for reasons that I don't know yet.

A simple search on Sadpanda proves this wrong. See first picture in this post.
Works containing netorare has existed back from 2007, but the community only decided to document the fetish on the Wiki and make a gallery tag for it in 2012. See second picture for this.
This happens because the requirement for a EH tag is for a particular object or context to be frequent enough to be found in hundreds of works but aren't popular enough to be omnipresent like vanilla stuff e.g. heterosexual, vaginal sex. Other requirements for creating new tags can be found on the relevant EH subforum.
After a new tag has been created, some EH users will apply the tag to relevant galleries, not only to newly made or recently observed galleries, but also old ones. Another case that could be observed easier is the Trap/Tomgirl tag. Works containing traps has existed in EH as far as 2007 too, but the gallery tag only came in existence in 2015. I didn't really know of any VNs that focused on that sort of content so I decided to try to look some stuff up. It really is difficult. I mostly found stuff where maybe one or two of the side-characters were fairly monstrous but it never is the focus of the game (unless it's targeting a specific niche like vore-fags). You'd be lucky if you get more than a single scene+CG.
It seems that looking into western porn games yields a few more results but most of it is furshit (like you mentioned) with the same single scene problem that VNs tend to have.

And finally fugging finished. I dragged on that maskdemasque case for like 3 weeks cause it was boring but I'm finally down with this Trilogy.
I do recommend Phoenix Wright, the translation is "Eat your Hamburgers, Apollo" levels of ENGLISH though. Also wouldn't recommend going through all 14 cases in 1 sitting, as you will feel that burn. Doing one game in a turn is good and Bridge is the perfect ending to the series, plus that music and character art are beautiful. Also a pretty good port but I did notice one spelling mistake with Pearl in a case which has me thinking they straight lifted it from the HD/DS copy. The Art is real pretty though, like the crisp lines of it and yes, the sprites look nice on a small DS handheld but I'm playing on a bigger screen here so it looks nice.
So yeah, give it a go, I think you'll like it. And while the "logic" can be confusing in some cases, usually you can see what question the judge is asking you.

I only really wanted to show a good loli ending to the thread and stop because it was an obscure and largely unheard of VN that came up only because someone mentioned its length and it turned out to be more than meets the eye.
I do intend to see all of it to the end for myself though.
Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with continuing, but, 1) it's grown stale and 2) I don't necessarily want to show the whole VN because in 2-3 years only a foggy memory of some mad MC banging a loli in a basement and domestic abuse will remain.

Honestly I like visual novels more than most other games these days (probably because I'm a reader at heart and also because most vidya coming out is lacking in anything interesting, all chasing after that AAA cookie cutter dollar) and for some reason I like nukige more than any other genre, probably because it actually gives you what it teases unlike other forms of VNs.
Also probably because of the girls. Actually that's more likely; you really don't get many girls like pic related in average VNs. They stay mainly to very common moe aesthetics.
Then you get games like Kara no Shoujo or Euphoria which utterly destroys all expectations for a nukige. I heard Clock Up also did a Lovecraft-inspired game recently where you're a guy who gets caught up in a crazy shinto sex cult in the mountains of Japan. It's a nukige and yet it's even more than that.

What's the definitive experience of Eve Burst Error? I'm liking the asenheim version for the PC98 visuals and music but playing on a browser sucks. The original version they have doesn't animate the sprites for expressions (so the characters always have the default sprite) while the Renewal version has an ugly UI and doesn't seem to play the PC98 music for some reason. Of the two I find the old version ot be more tolerable, but the lack of sprite expressions does bother me. Wasn't there someone working on a mod for the windows version for the PC98 visuals?

Where's a place I can get a safe version of Daemon Tools or a better alternative? Last I heard about DTools, they installed adware in people's computers without permission. The official site has a (((free))) adware version and I don't know if any of the ones on piratebay are clean.

I use WinCDEmu, nice and lightweight and free of bloat, just double click to mount and image and double click again to unmount.
I am baffled as to why these virtual drive programs are all so shitty though, until a couple of years ago I was using an old version of daemon tools from a decade ago. I decided to get the latest version and found that daemon tools had turned into some horrible bloated piece of crap that could barely even run on my toaster. Is it so difficult to just make a simple program that does a simple job?

That's the thing. I use WinCDEmu too and I agree that it's great except with one big issue. The game in the post I'm replying to requires both disk images to be loaded at the same time in the same drive for the installation to work. The MDS file in that post is like a track list that the main disk image needs. I looked up if WDCE has the means to do that after getting a bunch of error messages and unfortunately, blessed simplicity becomes our Achilles Heel in this case.
It's just one specific thing I need. One little thing.

Pros:
Strong visuals
Very good atmosphere
Monsters are spooky
Sound direction top notch with mostly ambient stuff like wind or voices
Spotting ghosts while walking around is creepy
Cons
Characters are ehh.
Can't help but feel I'm on a carnival ride where I get thrown from spooky to spooky even though I can move around.
Plot isn't really making much sense, yes stuff is spooky and we avoid it but there doesn't seem to be a solid plot route along a location.

>Find room underneath staff room
That's it. Yes, there's spooky and stuff but the reason as to why a whole school would be abandoned like that is glossed over. It's like encountering a spooky monster without all the build up, only knowing how to avoid it. This is an alien, avoid it's acid and kill it. There, not spooky.

I think that staff room is proof enough why this whole place was abandoned. I wouldn't be surprised if the school got less and less people after the controversies behind what the principal was doing came to public. Then the few people who came there got killed by the ghost.
I agree with you on the plot and characters which made me drop the VN. The characters needed more time and depth. The plots for the ghost stories just need more depth because there could be more things worth exploring when it comes to the mystery. Especially the second ghost. I was like "Wait, we're already trying to kill him?" when I felt that only half the story was explored with him.
As for as horror VNs go. I'm enjoying Neighbor more.
