Razer's shutting down services for both the Ouya and their Razer Mojo or whatever the fuck it's called.
In retrospect the idea of micro consoles was pretty fucking stupid, why was it such a big fad in the early 2010's? Why did so many people fall for the Kikestarter only to realize it's something they didn't know they didn't want? I guess it was before people knew better and realized crowdfunding is a blatant scam but the Ouya made a ton of money even compared to others from the time.
The only one I saw any appeal in was the PS TV only because it's a cost-reduced version of the PS Vita and it's a really great device for homebrew since Enso Henkaku came along.

Crowdfunding is great in principle but fails in practice because are too retarded to make correct choices or even realize mistakes they make.
The bigger the category the more likely the kikestarter is to fail thanks to more fucking retards throwing more money at the kike than he can properly manage.

>HDMI emulation box
Sounds pretty terrible. Proper N64 emulation requires the AngrylionPlus RDP, which needs a beefy modern CPU (7700K+ for Intel, or a Ryzen 1600+ for AMD). Proper Playstation emulation will be with Mednafen, which needs more single thread performance than you're going to get out of any mobile processor. So that leaves you with good Gen 4 and prior emulation, except they're all going to look like trash on any screen with HDMI support without shaders, except whoops, there isn't an SBC in existence that can run any of the good shaders.
Fortunately you can get composite video (or RGB/SCART/Component with a hat) out of the Raspberry Pi 3B+, and it's fast enough for gen 4 and prior, so you can easily play those games on a CRT as they were meant to be played.

I used to use it as an emulation box and actually liked it back in the day with Retroarch. I recently tried to play Chrono Cross on it and couldn't get my controller working. I don't think I've used it since 2015 or 2016. Most the games on it you can just get online for PC. It's a shame, really. I knew it wasn't gonna be anything special. I wanted to use it for emulation on my TV and also build games to it as a hobby. Too bad the project lead was a lady with some "off look" to her and it didn't do anything particularly impressive that couldn't just be cloned by more competent developers.

This whole fiasco should dispel any notion at all that people actually want mobile games as entertainment, rather than them just wanting a time waster while they're shitting or being a click away on an unrelated device they already own. The whole mobile market is a trash fire precisely because it successfully found it's niche - people that don't give a fuck and have better things to do, but have a few moments to kill before they can do those things. And children who don't know any better playing on a deactivated phone their parents handed to them when they upgraded.
Now they've got the message, but they're trying to push traditional games into mobile game spaces because if they can't bring the market to them - they'll go to the market. But it's still going to fail because a shit game played locally is still going to be better than streaming a laggy shit AAA game over a network that's data-capped. Not to mention console games require multi-input controls that aren't viable on a touch-screen, and nobody with a lick of self-respect are going to hook up a controller dock to their phone to play said games. At best, they could tap into the "kids with old cellphones" market since they're not going to be far from a wifi connection where there aren't (as many) data caps - but that still ends up with the problem of those kids not knowing any better and ignoring AAA shit in favor of more simple tap shit. To appeal to them, they'll have to start making console games more like mobile games so they're stream-friendly for phones.
Get ready for the future of people paying to stream a 4k video feed of a game to a 720p phone and screencast that shit to a 1080p TV. This is what the industry thinks people want.

No it wouldn't, the only remotely sensible way would be if you find it for 10 bucks and flash it for general computing as an rpi replacement.
And even then the most value you'd get out of it would probably be the 'I gave her a home' thread

I have been wondering the same thing. My best guess would be that people are still looking at things with the enthusiastic and naive eyes of children. Future generations will judge us very hard.

>t. backed a few board games which arrived on time and were actually what was promised.
Board games are a fairly safe bet because the entire game can be developed and tested using just cardboard. The crowdfunding money is only needed for the final production and professional art. The only way to screw that up is to be a colossal retard or rely on some backally shop to do the printing instead of a reputable firm.

>I'm ashamed to admit I was intrigued when the Ouya was first announced. In my naivety, I thought it would be like Gunpei Yokoi's design philosophy for the Game Boy: Use deliberately outdated hardware in new ways.
Outdated hardware is not necessarily a problem. I would actually like a low-cost console that had games that are behind in graphics, but fun to play, instead of a modern console with AAA games that are boring.
Ouya's problem was that there were no games worth playing on it. The GameBoy had Tetris, Alleyway (Breakout clone) and Super Mario land on its launch, those were really great games for their time, plus Nintendo and 3rd parties would be making more games for it. What did Ouya have? Towerfall? Oh boy, I cannot contain my excitement. And unlike the Game Boy, you never owned anything you bought for the Ouya, there were no cartridges. Is anyone going to pay money for a virtual good to a company that might go out of business over night?

Less, actually. The logic present in even the most advanced board games can be replicated and tested with just about any computer to find all the outcomes, duds, and whatever. I board game with a million pieces and squares still has less potential outcomes than even the most basic 2d game simply by the power of exponentials.
