Just for one thing, there's all of the lore about Cyrodiil from before Oblivion that's just blatantly incompatible with the official version of Cyrodiil we see in Oblivion. So I'm imagining someone making their own fantasy setting where, e.g., there's an equatorial jungle that's the seat of a dragon-worshipping one world government. Even though the setting I'm describing is blatantly just made from retconned-out TES lore, would Bethesda actually have any legal argument to make against it?

Keep in mind: We're talking about a company that regularly plagiarises fan content and that have a working methodology of tricking other companies into signing agreements with them that allow them to then take those companies over in order to cannibalise their talent and IP. Tamriel Rebuilt and other province mods disregard anything post-Morrowind that cannot be used (Oblivion Ayyleid architecture is used in Project Cyrodiil, but that's about it so far). ESO is disregarded as well. As far as I know, when the mod gets finished, the main quest will be altered to accommodate the rest of the province (Hortator quests for example). As for the rest of the province mods, they'll be making their own mainquests, but in strict consistency with TR and each other. TR somewhere uses the same artstyle as Vvardenfell, but in most regions they're doing their own thing, but only to preserve the alien atmosphere and not be the same. All of the other province mods follow the same principle, so I hope they'll be good.

There is one other guy named Ted Peterson who contributed a great deal to initial lore. Peterson has basically said that Arena's lore is inconsequential, just a mash of stuff from other games and fantasy books, nothing new.

Peterson also left after Morrowind. From the two of them came probably 95% of the interesting lore. Kirkbride is more important though because of the crazy, expansive stuff he wrote. Mysterious Akavir is a good example, one of the most interesting books in the series.

On the other hand, the real world is not like that. There are thousands of religions and cults across the world who all make claims as to what is "right"; hell, there's even explanations for the world that don't have any sort of god or creator figure, and just say "shit happened". We know a lot about how the world works, but we also thought we knew a lot 1500 years ago; people were just as confident in the accuracy of physics by Aristotle as physics by Newton, and in the present day, there are people as convinced the earth is 7000 years old, at the same time as there are those with evidence of it being 4.54 billion years old. Just the Bible alone has hundreds of sub-denominations of Christianity built on it, and that's before considering dead cults or even present day variants that use apocryphal texts, or else remove aspects. It's an absolute cluster-fuck, but in spite of that, we still have managed to construct systems that make sense of it.

What makes TES lore compelling is that the writers didn't approach the game like a bunch of world creators, but world explainers. Arena was made, and it was generic fantasy. The writers for Daggerfall filled out the lore, and then had a bunch of writers in-universe trying to explain stuff (why the fuck is it called Hammerfell?). They kept doing that between the games - hence, you get the PGE 1st Edition, where the human writer's work is annotated by an elvish reader's commentary. One writer writes a thing, another writer writes a response from some other cultural group. But everything remains consistent within the bounds of any given cultural group. If you gave one person only the in-game stuff written by Dunmer, and another in-game stuff written by Imperials, they'd still be able to relate similar events, but with entirely different perspectives. And that does actually take some effort. Effort which is absolutely squandered by the lazy-ass development team.

I love the lore in the Elder Scrolls but I think its lacking. Everyone it seems accepts Anu and Padomay as basically correct and operates under the assumption that Lorkhan tricked others into creating the world. Realistically, there would be far more discussion and wildly differing creation myths. I enjoy Kirkbrides writing (when it has been tempered), but the man is an unapologetic Gnostic. He only wants to assert the Gnostic interpretation as the truthful one. If everyone truly accepts that interpretation then Man is inherently wrong and Mer is inherently right and the Thalmor are right. There shouldn't be as much of an argument as there is. Men shouldn't even believe in Anu/Padomay. It would make more sense for them to assert that Shezzar is the creator of all, who made everything and chose his favorites (Aedra) and cast out his hated (Daedra). That makes a case for existence instead of this relativist "Mantling God-Head and starting a new Kalpa" or "breaking the cycle". Far more interesting to have these absolutely different idealogies go at it. But this is the flaw with Kirkbirde. I think he is far too into Gnosticism to even consider that as being wrong in anyway. I hate to get too personal about it, but that is absolutely the problem here.

Unlike the other players in the world, the Psijics don't believe in gods or creation - Mundus is as Mundus is and has been, and the higher spirits are former mortals that have reached a higher status. I agree and disagree for Kirkbride - yes, he does go very strong on the gnostic side, and yes, his post-game lore does lean heavily in that direction. However, I also think he's entirely aware of that himself, which is why he went in the C0DA direction - in his personal view, the world ends and the cycle is relapsed in a specific way, because that's how he sees things going. It's a statement of: "I want to write about these things from this way, but I'm not the only writer of the series, and I've never been. There are other factors to consider, and you, as the reader and person who is playing and modding these games, need to assert your own viewpoint on things." So while the gnostic manner and the "Amaranth Ending" are his canon, there's still other ways to "reach heaven" in the setting which aren't elaborated on, other potential endings, and a lot of ways to view stuff.

This is a Hindu like belief system, which is still in the Gnostic way. I hesitate to claim the Dwemer as an atheistic system and think of them more as apatheistic. I don't think anyone in the Elder Scrolls could truly call themselves Atheistic (Although, genuinely trying to write such a viewpoint and make it worthwhile would be very interesting). If the Psijics could be called Hindus, then the Dwemer are Buddhists. Of course, this is not entirely accurate nor fair to either side, but the comparison is apt I think.

I think you misunderstand my point about Kirkbride. I'm not critical of his Gnosticism because he portrays it as the only way to heaven, but that it is the only possible framework at all. The entire understanding of Aurbis is one hell of a base assumption for what seems like every single group of scholars and religions to just accept as fundamentally true. I don't see any perspectives that are radically different from this fundamental story. His post-game lore is of no concern to me, it's that the groundworks he laid out hasn't been expanded outward but merely upward officially. This is the problem. It makes no sense for men to not listen to mer if they fundamentally believe the absolute same basic truths. It would be a lot more interesting if instead of it being "damn elves" that there was a larger theological dispute at hand.

Every time you Shout a line from one of the lorebooks is expelled from your mouth. The effectiveness and magnitude of the shout is increased the more you have read and how many lines you have read (lines read = mana bar, but the density of each line and length also effect it too). You can strategically read harder and longer lines from obscure books to battle stronger enemies. You get a bonus multiplier if you have consecutive lines from the same book, or utilize lines that are thematically relevant to the other. This encourages the player to actually comprehend the lore on more than just a superficial level, where the citation and combination of quotes create incredibly powerful shouts.

I started playing Morrowind again but I was using Open MW and got pissed off with it so dropped it at about level 40ish.
