He didn't come from the right bloodline. The reason the MC's son is able to use the legendary equipment because all two (or three if you're playing the DS version) of the possible brides in the game come from the right bloodline.

Official DS translations have thae ye olde e'nglish which is unreadable at best, and cringy at worst. Same goes for every single translation done under Square Enix (everything from 8 on). Avoid whenever possible.

PS2 is the definitive version but DS/IOS/Android has more content at the cost of a god awful localization. And the amount of it is so large and intricate that it manages to balance itself out. I personally would suggest the latter, since the translation itself is fairly accurate and you can overlook Sancho's spanish and the final boss'es unreadable cyrillic slav rune bullshit.
