The only kids who "grew up" on "PC" were kids whose parents didn't love them enough to get them real video games, but sometimes grandma would hear he likes "computer games" and would get him one instead. Then he would show up to school and hear all the kids talking about Mario and Sonic, and he'd try to claim Jazz Jackrabbit was just as good. But it wasn't. It never was. And Commander Keen was never as good as Mega Man, either. The underage faggots here don't remember that until the late 2000s, it was very common for the "PC" versions of games to actually be totally different games, usually shovelware with the name slapped on. Of course, by the time this began to change in a meaningful percentage, it was post-2007, and the rate of good games being released was pitiful by that point anyway. The only reason the trend changed post-2007 was because of Orange Box normalfags who got on Steam because "THE CAKE IS A LIE XD" and so that they could socialize with their friends online in Left for Dead and Team Fortress 2.
None of this is to say that there were zero good games on Windows or DOS or a couple other computer platforms before, but they were more rare, and they were more niche. Almost all the games anyone gave a shit about were on Nintendo or Sega or PlayStation, and it's fine to say that Doom and Diablo and Rollercoster Tycoon were great, but don't pretend you weren't missing out on a lot more, and don't bring in shovelware shit and pretend it's as good as a real game. The good ones were the exception and not the rule. There were a few genres that were done better there than on the major platforms of the day, but they weren't the dominant genres at the time, and sales of even the big sellers were minuscule compared to games on the major platforms. That's not to say that sales equal quality, but there is a lot of revisionist history going around, presumably by underagefags and europoors, pretending like "computer games" were a major thing at the time, like they were always "master race," when statistically, it was never close to the case. It wasn't like today where most households have computers. Few did, and when they did, they were frequently shit and couldn't do anything anyway. They were frequently only for work, or something the parents got because they heard they should have one, but it was shit because they didn't know how to use computers so they didn't get a good one. Of course internet access was very rare, so there goes most of what you, a modern user, use a computer for anyway, as well as most of your instructions on how to do anything else on a computer.
The other big factor is Eurofags, who due to fucked distribution, missed out on a ton of good games, with large portions of their backwater continent never having the NES distributed properly in a way that would make it catch on. They basically missed out on that whole generation. I like a few Master System games too, but it lost compared to NES for a reason. These people now have to pretend that their childhoods weren't garbage, trying desperately to act like the ZX Spectrum was as good as the NES. It wasn't. I'm sorry. I hope you've since had the chance to go back and play all those Mario games you missed.

i mostly maintained the attitude that pcs are for work until i built my own and put in a radeon 9800 pro.

They are very few and far between. Upgrading to the hardware required to play them is the equivalent of buying a console for two or three games.

I can play all the older stuff on old laptops that I use for work. That's a whole different beast compared to upgrading to modern hardware for modern games. My toasters have been able to run N64/PS1 for over a decade, and that includes computers I literally took out of the garbage. That's the apex era of games anyway. I wouldn't mind getting Dolphin going, but I have a hacked Wii since they're cheap as shit, so that can play everything. As far as I can tell, PS2 emulation is still shit despite some people saying otherwise, just like how you say Saturn emulation is actually good now even though I know it's not. Better off modding a PS2 and Saturn for the free games even though I feel bad modding something relatively uncommon like a Saturn.

Consolechad here. I started with the Super Nintendo and have acquired each succeeding Nintendo console since. And similar to consoles and their 8 "generations", Windows PCs follow a similar generational pattern. Every time a new OS comes out (XP, Vista, 7, 8, and now 10), it signals the start of a new era in Windows gaming. And sadly, Microsoft's current plan is to cut off their support for Windows 7 on (January 14, 2020) in an effort to get customers to move on to the more spyware-friendly Windows 10.
Anyways, when it comes to playing on old hardware, I still easily prefer old consoles over playing on old PC hardware/OS. I have no qualms about playing on the Super Nintendo's 1991 hardware because it's such a classic. Even today, you'll still see many console gamers bring it up from time to time as a great retro system. But in comparison, I kinda take reservations when asked to revisit something like a 2001-hardware PC running Windows XP. Not that the latter is shit or anything, but I see it as a pointless endeavor when I could be playing PC games on more recent powerful PC hardware. And even today, PC gamers often scoff at anything less powerful than a "weak" PS4/Xbone/Switch. Including old PC hardware that's considered low end. Hence, another reason why acquiring old PCs seems like a waste of time.

PC gaming was a joke until the Sound Blaster, mouse, and VGA/MCGA were affordable enough that everyone had them. Gaming on CGA with the internal speaker was horrendous compared to the NES and SMS.
Yeah Commander Keen wasn’t Sonic, but it also predated Sonic. Altered Beast used to be the flagship title. And don’t forget that pretty much everyone forgot about consoles and ran out and bought a PC when id’s next game, Wolfenstein 3D, hit the market and became the first Call of Duty.
Even while that was all going on it still took a while for DOS and console games to reach the level of quality and play value of the C64, Amiga, ST, and earlier Apple/Atari hardware. The average C64 gamer had 100+ titles in his library while his Nintendo buddies had a choice of Mario, Zelda, Punch-Out, Tecmo Bowl, or Contra.
Growing up with PC was either good or bad, depending on which decade it happened in.

Well I did it by choice.
My parents said that I could either have an xbox or a trampoline. I picked the trampoline.
Then I got some fun games on PC and didn't really have to bother with a console.
Personally I think it was better that I had PC games for my childhood. Instead of entering an ecosystem with games targeted for children, like nintendo games,
I got to participate in a platform with enthusiast games like Command and conquer and Age-of Empires.
Because I got involved at the enthusiast level and only continued to develop my taste even further, it means I will always have better taste than the fool who says I "missed out" on some Mario game.
