What are some games like Yume Nikki but with more functionality? The aesthetics of YM are great, but the amount of walking that's really uninteresting to sit through is what turns me off from the game.

A similar problem with Deadly Premonition, very interesting story beats and vibe, but the travel between points is too much to bear (that and bad optimization).

What are some games that nail this aesthetic but don't have the content spread far too thin?

Hell, I'd just be interested in more games like it honestly.

I want to feel like a wanderer exploring a strange place that I don't quite belong to.

>A similar problem with Deadly Premonition, very interesting story beats and vibe, but the travel between points is too much to bear (that and bad optimization)

This opinion is wrong. The driving around listening to the dude talking to himself is in fact the best part of the game, while the story is just a lame retread of Twin Peaks until it completely shits the bed with nonsense.

With games like Yume Nikki and LSD: Dream Emulator, a lot of the enjoyment comes from the wandering around and seeing and hearing all of the weird shit, though I do actually agree that Yume Nikki has a little too much walking around. I don't know if it's quite what you're after, but there's a game similar to LSD called #21: The World, based on the creator's dream diary (or so he says). Might be worth checking out.

I had a phase where I was really into 00s artsy game stuff. One I've still got on my hard drive is All Of Our Friends Are Dead (pic related). It's kind of crappy as a game, full of bullshit offscreen hazards, but you may be interested in its aesthetic. There's another game by the same author called AuSable.

You could take a look at the other Yume Nikki-inspired games that have come out in the past decade or so. .flow is one of those. Many others have the same dreamlike aesthetic, but a different style from Yume Nikki, like Ib (which has a clearer story and defined characters).

Yume 2kki improves upon it in some areas.

Don't forget about Worlds.com. The fact that you sometimes manage to run into human players that usually are a little odd makes it even better.

Hey dude, nice. Check out Au Sable by the same dev. Its AOOFAD but slightly more polished with even better aesthetics.

Still kind of bullshit as a game, but its nice.

>wanderer exploring a strange place that i don't quite belong to

my nigger you have described my exact fetish. this is without a doubt my favorite setting in gaming and in my opinion is truly criminally underrepresented. my favorites are:

>I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream

>The Dig

>Tormentum: Dark Sorrow

honorable mention is the novelization of The Dig. normally I can't stand novelizations of other media but the author perfectly manages to convey the difficulty of being in a strange place, and even though there are multiple characters even reading it feels lonely and desolate. it's honestly in my top three favorite sci fi books ever

The Void is a good contender.

It's much darker than Yune Nikki, both aesthetically and in theme, but it has that same surreal and dreamlike quality.

I played this game as an 11-year-old at some point in 2008 or 2009. I never found it again and assumed it was a weird dream for years until I found a post about it on /v/ awhile ago.

In my case it was too much for the game. No amount of fan patches helped on either Steam or gog version. Even downloading a savegame after the crash I got just lead it to crash a couple seconds after loading anyway.

;_;

I found OFF to be a bit too bland for me. I've tried getting into it several times but the combat pulls the game down.

>>16466504

yes

>>16466454

That looks interesting. Is it a paid game?

>>16466429

I played IHNMAIMS. Really cool, interesting to see how much they extrapolated from such a small story.

What is The Dig about?

>>16463758

I'll give AOOFAD a try.

>>16463756

I'll try out #21 The World. Got it in my downloads right now.

Another interesting game is Dead End Road. It's about a man who in order to get a satanic wish granted, must traverse the road to Dead End Road without losing control of his car via numerous supernatural occurrences along the way. While the ending is a bit disappointing, the accepted wish list is quite expansive and the traveling very comfy in a spooky way.

Another honourable mention is Darkwood. It nails the aesthetic and interactivity with the world. But does fall flat on immersion with it's rather shallow world/lore.

The night sequences also drag on a bit once you figure how to stay safe.

458e0e  No.16466871

Try out Daymare Town and Submachine. They are point and click puzzle games, but have a very interesting atmosphere you may enjoy. Also, they are free to play on the creator's site or where they've been uploaded throughout the years

Yes, but you can find torrents of it easily enough. It's by the same studio that made Pathologic.

>>16466885

Yeah I've played all his games up until the most recent one you mentioned. Is that an in game screen? You'd think he'd increase the detail just a tad for a paid release.

No its just a pic I pulled online from the deep sleep series. Haven't played his new release yet either. I may end up buying it

>What is The Dig about?

An asteroid appears seemingly out of nowhere and is on a collision course with Earth, so Earth sends up three astronauts to nuke it into orbit Armageddon-style. The nukes open fissures into the asteroid, and the astronauts explore inside to find out that the asteroid is actually some form of alien spacecraft, which activates and whisks them off to the asteroid-creators' now-completely-abandoned home planet.
