Are there any guides for cleaning consoles? I have a used PS2 that's pretty dirty and I'd like to get it cleaned, but I'm worried about accidentally damaging something and leaving it unusable. I have a Wii that I want to bump a few scratches off of as well, but that's not as important. I think this vid might be a good guide but I don't know for sure.

TL;DR General Console Cleaning/Repair Thread

For dust use a compressed air can

For the surface use screen cleaning wipes. Yes, I said screen cleaning wipes, generally they're just soft microfiber cloths and about 50 percent alcohol. If they're delicate enough for screens they're fine to wipe your consoles down with without fear of scratching them. lus you should have some for cleaning screens anyways because they're great for getting marks off of screens without smearing or smudging.

What exactly are you trying to clean about it? The surfaces, the fan, etc?

>>16456012

Going to add that one ought to make sure the system is totally off and unplugged before using compressed air, and wait a while afterward before plugging it back in. Just saying since compressed air has a degree of moisture to it, even when decompressed.

The one thing that I'd like to have cleaned in particular is the bottom piece. There's dust in the vents that I don't know how to get rid of without taking apart the PS2. I also have one scratch on the top I'd like to have removed, and I'd probably clean the fan in the back for good measure. My PS2 can read discs with no problems, I just found that it's a little loud when running, so I was wondering if it was always this loud.

So take it apart.

That's what I plan to do. I just need to make sure I have everything I need to take it apart.

Yeah, I've tried blowing the dust out of my PS2's fan before (glass top entertainment systems are a mistake), but it only helps so much short of actually opening the fan area up and manually cleaning the area. Mine isn't particular loud though, and if it had any issues prior to when I got it, they were probably fixed in refurb.

PS2 slims are a hell of a lot easier to clean, repair, and disk swap. Look into getting one of those.

I replace thermal paste and do a full cleaning every few years on most of my consoles. you can check something like ifixit for what tools you'll need and step by step guides if you never taken a PS2, Wii, etc apart before. Sony stuff can be a pain in the ass to breakdown, they use a lot of hard to reach ribbon cables so be careful not to pull to hard on anything anon. The Wii should be pretty simple as long as you have the right screwdriver, iirc.

The fat ones have always been a bit loud, I don't know about the slims. If you don't like it I remember there was a pretty simple fan mod for the fat PS2 from a while ago. It shouldn't be to hard to find it

I haven't changed my PC's thermal paste in 4 years. I should get on that, as well as buying a proper cooler. Intel stock coolers are shit.

Step two: hold nozzle 3 inches away from your eatin hole

Step three: squeeze the trigger and inhale slowly

Step five: enjoy the ride

>compressed air can

This shit is useless. All it does is blow dust everywhere and make a mess, if it even moves that ancient dust at all.

Use a soft bristle brush, like a basting brush. That'll be gentle and pick up dust easily.

100 degrees is when you should worry, but doesn't hurt to reapply thermal paste, make sure you put a glob of thermal paste, get your credit card and sort of smear it across the cpu die, don't worry thermal paste isn't conductive so keep at it and make sure every inch of it is covered in thermal paste.

Also if you're out of actual thermal paste you can sub it with Nutella, you may be fooled by it being a food condiment but it's actually a conductive hazelnut-flavoured thermal paste that was engineered to conduct heat from toast in order to melt with the toast, the heat transfer is criminally overlooked, this is handy if you're tasked with making a sandwhich for your wife's son and need to cool your computer, a powerful life hack indeed.

Check a disassembly guide if in doubt but generally you just open the fucker up and clean it. PS2 should be rather simple, I did it before.

You also want to delid that shit anyway, and there's a 90% chance of fucking it up so merely cleaning it and removing the dust from the fan is the best thing you could do.
