I'm actually impressed how "un-blurry" it made Aerith's face at the beginning. But I don't like that it couldn't be able to tell if something is supposed to be blurry, the big blue lights of the zoomed out city before the logo for example. It's pretty clear they're supposed to be glowing but the AI gives them a really sharp appearance. This would also theoretically happen to anything behind smoke or translucent glass.
There's also the fact that you can't just pull detail from thin air, so what the AI is essentially doing is "guessing" what things are supposed to look like, and then drawing it's own detail. This works pretty well for basic and already pretty defined objects, but you can see it struggles with scenes full of very small, intricate details like scenes of the city when it's zoomed out and especially the logo, where it has that distinct "filtered mush" appearance if you look closely. It also means that what you're essentially viewing is not any ground truth, but the AI's opinion of what the video is supposed to look like. And that kind of thing just bothers me for some reason, the fact that I'm viewing an opinion and not fact.
At the end of the day however, the consequences of indiscriminate sharpening and destruction of fine details are probably something most people aren't going to notice or care about, so this kind of technology is probably something we're going to see used in official remasters, which already often get fucked by weird changes, which is why I'm thankful for emulation. Actually, I think Chrono Trigger on Steam already comes with pre-filtered assets.

I've been wanting to play Final Fantasy XIII on pc for the better part of a year. The pc version uses shit compressed video files for the cutscenes. Some guy apparently figured out how to get the ps3 cutscene files into the pc version. But even if I copy his method and it works, the ps3 files are also compressed (ps3 and pc are both 720p).
Apparently the 360 version was rereleased on xbone with the original cutscenes. No one seems to be working on bringing those uncompressed cutscenes to the pc version. Is the pc gaming scene really this dead? I still remember the FF7 modding community being incredibly active even into the late 2000s but now everyone is conglomerated into a select few modern sites like reddit or steam and they don't do shit, they just upvote each other and call it a day. Play it on hard but the japanese script is amazing. The translation is horror inducing but other than that, all the problems the game has are carried over from its original version. It's a remake that is way too faithful to the original, like the 3DS OoT, where grezzo replicated the glitches.
