Squirm through 42 loathsome levels filled with more atmosphere than a Lovecraftian mausoleum. And then, I look at the trailer:

>Nightdive (WTF? These people are good at necro-assfucking abandonware, and nothing else.)

>KEX engine. (Kek? Isn't this the failed, and (free, not free, libre, not libre, etc.) code stealing retro engine? I might be wrong here, I don't interface with the internet every fucking day.)

Well in the end, there is no one to blame.

They added a "vignette" and called it a day.

Old retro IPs are hard to claim.

Being the devs, I would do the same.

The corporate tried to cash in - on the gore.

Forgetting it had been done - just before.

Hiring meme dev's - from the 90's.

Nostalgia would sell - with ease.

Necro the ancient good IPs.

Paywall to get the DLCs.

If God-tier devs have to decease.

Why even pay for the new release?

Here we are. On the edge of internet.

We are the best of the best, I bet.

>a imitation of the original engine

>reverse engineered hack of the game due to lack of source code.

Not completely true. It's actually based on the leaked source code of Blood's alpha. The author said the not-so-legally-borrowed-source-code only made 20% of GDX's code, but frankly I don't believe him. He originally built multiple Build Engine source ports on EDuke32, and since he had the obligation to release the code for his own project to the license (which he never did), he claimed that he wrote everything from scratch. Later on, he said that he got rid of all the code that was coming from EDuke32 and has started working on a new rendering engine… go figure how close it is to the original code.

Regarding the accuracy of his engine, it's beyond "pretty close" as he managed to playback a demo recorded in the original game with his own engine.

>"It bothers us that Blood 2 happened the way it did, but the bottom line is that GT Interactive controlled whether additional work and support got done on Blood 2 or not. This concept is something that eludes most gamers. They think that Monolith could have just gone on and “fixed” Blood 2 if we really wanted to. Not true. I’ll explain why… GT Interactive completely owns the Blood franchise, not us. We were paid by GT to produce Blood 2. We were given 11 months to do it in. GT was our customer. As our customer, they had every right to take the work that we were doing for them, and ship it whenever they felt was the right time. Certainly, there were many factors involved with regard to why Blood 2 got shipped when it did, but all of those factors were based on GT 's needs and direction, not Monolith's. Monolith did not control the ship date (I wish we did!). Monolith did not hold Blood 2 in the air and say to GT, 'We are done! There is nothing more for us to do!' No, all Monolith said to GT was, 'Based on the amount of time we were allocated, and the various events that have occurred during development, here is where we are. If you want us to continue, here is what it will cost. We would encourage you to allow us to continue.' Then, GT shipped Blood 2…"

if it finds a game from them that isn't on your account list it still adds it to your list but disables updates and online play

They aren't joking around with their no DRM policy, and are happy to assume that maybe you quite literally just got it from a friend. That doesn't mean you get all the same services as a paying customer.

to its detriment you can't simply add any game as you can with Steam, and it lacks Steam's (admittedly (begrudgingly)) impressive controller interpretation layer

There's basically two ways to play classic FPSes, and a spectrum inbetween.

>play it fast as possible, killing only the enemies you need to as efficiently as possible

>play it as thoroughly as possible, trying to find as many secrets as possible and get as much supplies as possible before going to the next level

And then there's also the option of going for 100% kills, which I never do because I find it somewhat tedious, but you may end up accidentally doing it anyway if you get 100% secrets.

Usually, most people start with the second style and change to the first after they've played a level and want to play it again.

cd34a5  No.16454167

So one thing I've noticed after playing E1M1 and M2 on Lightly Broiled is that cultists drop their weapons WAY more frequently than in either the DOS version or NBlood. First cultist I killed in M1 dropped the shotgun, which at first I thought meant I just got really lucky because a shotgun in the first level is incredibly useful, especially after snagging akimbo on top of that mausoleum thing. But then in M2, the first Tommy Gun cultist dropped his weapon as well, which is incredibly odd as in all my time playing the game before this getting enemies to drop their weapons this easily never happened. Again, I could have just gotten incredibly lucky as I only played these two levels once. Maybe there was some gameplay setting I missed that they turned on by default to casualize this shit for newniggers, but I hope there's a way to fix this as it kind of doles out the weapons too quickly especially for the first episode.

>>16454074

Play on Lightly Broiled to start with. Because it's so low on the list you may be fooled into thinking that it's the equivalent of "Hey, Not Too Rough" difficulty of DooM or something. Wrong. Blood is the kind of game where the Normal mode is actually the Hard mode, and the Hard difficulties are the rip-your-asshole-out-and-spit-it-back-in-your-face mode.

>okay, beside the weapons that are not special, which weapons are special

No TNT, no flare gun, and no life leech? What about the pitchfork, the tesla cannon and the voodoo doll?

Seriously though, regardless of the game, every weapon is basically doing the exact same thing: you pull the trigger and it kills things.

Gameplay wise, Blood provided alternative uses for each weapon (which wasn't very common back then, but was a selling point to Half-Life), and they felt different enough from other FPS at the time, not so much mechanically, but esthetically. Some would set enemies on fire, other would blow them to smithereens or turn them into dust. In the whole scheme of things, there's no major difference between vanilla DOOM guns and Trailblazer guns if you ignore how they feel and how they deface your enemies.

The design of Blood's weaponry contributed to the atmosphere as a whole. Duke3D had a sci-fi chain gun, Doom had a military grade heavy machine gun, and Blood had an old-fashioned Al Capone Tommy Gun. The flare and pitchfork provides a slasher/horror movie vibe, while the voodoo doll and the life leech were going to a supernatural vibe. Try changing Quake's weapon with modern guns and you'll take away a part of what made Quake's eerie style.

In a way, these FPS were cool because they had their own setting and style, instead of what most FPS games are doing today (standard run-of-the-mill sci-fi setting).

When I first played the game, I assumed the flare-gun worked like a standard pistol only to realize you had to WAIT for the flame to consume the enemy. It's deadly, will grind health slowly, and it requires a bit of understand of how the gun works to make good use of it (it's not a hitscan weapon, and it doesn't instantly kill enemies).

The sewed-off shotgun is more basic, but you had to compose with the reloading time. Plus, the second use combined the standard Doom shotgun and the double-barreled shotgun of Doom2. That's two weapons in one.

The Tommy gun could easy rip any enemy to shreds, but the secondary mode would allow you to spray the whole room as you tried to find cover.

The napalm launcher is more than "just a rocket launcher" because of the way Blood manages explosions. You could push enemies away and even prevent some enemies from getting closer by shooting in-between multiple enemies.

Voodoo doll is an okay hitscan weapon, until you unleash its destructive power with the secondary use, which would kill weakest enemies in a single attack. Not to mention the stupid penalty for use the doll when no one's in sight.

The life leech would replenish your health by stealing your target's vitality, and start eating up your own life when you're out of ammo. I'm not aware of many games were you can trade your health for ammo when you're in desperate need for a gamble.

The large choice of explosives was also a nice touch. Combined to their different uses (throw, timed, drop), it was an endless supply of fun.

The way hitscan was handled was interesting too; unlike other games were enemies were represented as "big boxes" (the whole sprite / using hitboxes like Half-Life), Blood checked if you actually hit the visible part of the sprite of its transparent pixels (pretty much like Doom III, where hit detection is done using the actual triangle of the model instead of hitboxes). These tweaks impact the way weapons feel in Blood, it put the game apart.

This port is a fucking mess, it doesn't have completely game-braking bugs, but some of the issues are just amateur. Easily the worst Kaiser work so far, did anyone even test this port? Not even Devolver Digital ports of Duke and SW were as bad, but for some reason people praise it as a second coming of Christ while there is BloodGFX and NBlood which are superior to Kaiser version. I hope he fixes this because a game like Blood deserved better than this barebones work.

Music never restarts if you die, load the game or start a new game, music volume option is irrelevant if you use CD music, some blood flying effects are missing and blood ground sprites tend to float in air, voxels are stretched, cultists and fanatics voices are mixed, there were some wrong palette swaps with cultists at least, some sound effects and sprites in general are fucked up, AI doesn't behave properly. Multiplayer also is rather rough and laggy for non-hosts and has some other bugs.

There is way more than that and I bet there is bigger list made by someone who tried to compare it to original. This port is raw and is very unpolished, but at least it doesn't crash I guess. For now I'd rather stick with BloodGFX or NBlood and I think both ports have multiplayer too which isn't stable either as far as I know.

The primary fire of the dynamite is a contact explosion, the secondary is a timed explosive that you can bank around corners. You can peek around a corner, see there are hitscanners, and throw dynamite that banks into them, or just throw it straight at them. There's a reason almost all the hitscanners in Blood are positioned in tight groups. Really good players jump in and out of combat, ducking when not in cover, jumping over zombie heads while dropping bundles of dynamite to blow them up at the perfect position so that they can dash away before the explosion expands and hurts them. It looks almost like a John Woo movie. Notice how he is ducking around 1:15-1:25 in this video, that's because there are a couple of cultists shooting at him from across the room. He only gets hit a couple of times for negligible damage even though they must have shot at him several times over that time period.

Maybe a Michael Bay film would be more appropriate considering it's explosions and not dual pistols.

Also, I do not know if Blood was the first FPS with alternate fire modes, but it is definitely one of the first. Technically Duke3D had the pipebombs which allowed you to throw multiple at once and blow them up, which required you to select the pipebomb again after you had thrown one. That's kind of like an alternate fire mode.

I can't stand BloodGDX because the dynamite throwing just feels off, but I'm replaying the game with NBlood right now and it's fantastic and works just fine. I'm disappointed because I really like having the power up timer in the new Nightdive port and the ability to play with custom difficulty settings is a great idea. I would hope they would go about fixing all the shit they fucked up soon but I have a feeling that Nightdive currently have legions of retarded ledditors praising this port as the new second coming so I'm not sure how motivated they'd be to fix it fast enough. Well, it still doesn't excuse lack of fix in a goddamn sourceport which they're actually sell, especially when completely free sourceports fixed even this shit. But yeah, I remember it now that you mentioned it. I forgot about this bug because of the fix actually and none of the recent sourceports had it either. Not sure if it happens on Windows 98 though, been long since I played the game on original hardware.

>I have a feeling that Nightdive currently have legions of retarded ledditors praising this port as the new second coming so I'm not sure how motivated they'd be to fix it fast enough

My thought exactly. Fuck, every single YouTuber praises this mess except for one guy I linked above which also listed dozen legit problems with it, I've seen only a few hardcore Blood fans criticizing the thing and calling it shit even. I guess people standards are too low these days, I bet if Megaton didn't exist people would praise World Tour as well.

However in bad case scenario there is always EDuke32 version which has attention of EDuke32 devs themselves so NBlood does indeed has a bright future, the only things it lacks are polished multiplayer and more EDuke32 features, so I'm not worried. The worst thing of course is that there is still no sourceport based on original source code.

>What sets it apart from the other similar shooters

Blood is a game where the basic enemies are hitscanners that can decimate your health bar in mere seconds. It's also a game where you can walk up to a room with said hitscanners and fuck them up without getting shot once, since crouching, jumping and running around like a madman shooting and diving through the air serves the purpose of throwing off the aim of said hitscanners.

It has a really good shotgun that reloads quick, packs an insane punch and it just helps that the sound design of the game is excellent and you're bound to get an erection when you clear a room and hear those sweet cultist screams.

It's also got some TECHNOLOGY with explosions where instead of just being damaged depending on distance, but instead it's a pushback sphere that grows in size while damaging you over the duration of the sphere growth, so you can end up throwing a TNT right in the middle of a group of enemies and be rewarded with a shitton of screams and enemies flying from the immensely satisfying knockback.

Blood also has a really good arsenal. The pistol is a flaregun that deals damage over time so you can fire and forget it while focusing on other enemies. The shotgun is great. The tommygun is meh until you get an akimbo powerup in which case it's a fucking dakka machine and there's nothing more satisfying than jumping into a room and alt firing dual tommys. The TNT is one of the most fun grenades I've had. Just the way it damages and the weight it has to throwing it makes me feel great. The napalm lawnchair is a great rocketlauncher and so is the alt fire that lobs a heavy glob of napalm that explodes into smaller napalm blobs. The plasma gun feels excellent to use, especially the alt fire. The life leech and voodoo doll are meh, the first feels awkward to use and the latter is pretty much the anti-stone gargoyle weapon.

I won't claim it's perfect, Episode 3 is when the game really doubles down on the bullshit and Episode 4 is infuriating, the bosses are meh, Stone Gargoyles and Revenants are shit enemies, with the former basically stopping the game dead in its tracks and forcing you to run out of voodoo ammo, and the latter being the same, except shotgun ammo instead of voodoo ammo and it's a fucking loud enemy that more often than not will leave you muting your speakers whenever you meet them.

It's just an overall very solid game. Try BloodGDX and see for yourself, go for Lightly Broiled or Well Done, avoid Extra Crispy. You'll die and feel like the game is nothing but bullshit, but stick with it and learn how to deal with hitscanners and going prone and you'll be having a blast in no time.

<no option to enable secrets and kill indicators in the HUD

<volume levels on voice samples/sound effects are wildly inconsistent

<cultists and spiders play sound effects they shouldn't be playing

<glitches everywhere: blood splats will sometimes hover mid-air, some enemies will glitch out by violently shaking up and down when they're under a low ceiling, fire armor pick-ups are half submerged into the floor

<reported compatibility issues with fan map packs like Deathwish

<multiplayer is locked behind GOG Galaxy/Steamworks

<no crossplay between the two either

<multiplayer lacks basic options like: password-locked rooms, room names, being able to kick players as host, setting maximum amount of players, setting the level, setting the difficulty, setting the type of game

<switching rendering APIs forces you to force kill the game with taskbar to get it running properly again

<enemies set ablaze somehow cause infighting too when they collide with others

<Mario cheat presents the message "not implemented yet", fucking lmao

<significant delay when quicksaving/loading whereas its near-instant with other sourceports

<framelimit option doesn't really work properly, you can set it to 120fps but the in-game FPS counter will still cap out at 60

<you need to be more precise with voodoo doll aiming now, though this means you're more prone to damaging yourself

<no texture filtering options

<multiplayer is rather buggy and midi playback can cause crashes for some PCs

<can't switch HUD size on the fly with the -/+ buttons

<minimal HUD is aligned to a 4:3 aspect ratio so you can't get the health and ammo indicators to be placed in the actual corners of your screen when you're playing on 16:9

<jumping physics are off, you now jump out of water with a greater distance than intended, so for example you couldn't reach the Tommygun on top of the floating piece of ice at the start of E2M1 when you tried to jump out of the water, but in Fresh Supply you can

I also want to add they removed One Unit Whole Blood from sale from GOG in favor for this, like Gearbox did with Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition by replacing it with World Tour. At least OUWB is still available on Steam.

<multiplayer is locked behind GOG Galaxy/Steamworks

This is a port that has a lot of issues but lets just get everything straight. You can play multi without Galaxy or Steamworks, you can direct connect via IP in the command console.

Host at the main screen uses 'spawnipserver' to create the server and forwards port 5029, other players use 'connectip [HOST IP GOES HERE] 5029' and they connect. Then the host hits New Game (NOT MULTIPLAYER) and then sets up the game, whether it's DM/Team/COOP.

I will agree with you that the multi seems really poorly implemented, there's no UI for the host to actually control the server via mapchange or any of the stuff you mentioned. However there is a lot of misinfo going around about that you cannot play multi without galaxy/steam.

It plays like an inferior port of Blood (like the GBA port of Doom) but it *is* a port of the game to an entire different engine. In fact, that's part of the charm. It's really fascinating to see how the game is basically rebuilt from scratch, though as a trade-off you get things like no voxels, skipped levels because the author has a big workload and wants to prioritize the most fun ones, weird enemy and weapon mechanics, etc.

>no texture filtering options

It's actually surprising, but fuck shitty filters anyway, they're always terrible for sprite-based video games.

>I also want to add they removed One Unit Whole Blood from sale from GOG in favor for this

People were saying that it now comes with Kaiser Blood as a bonus. So, at least it's not as bad as it was with Megaton or pretty much any other Duke 3D versions. But for comparison, you could buy Megaton and original version separately meanwhile Megaton had DOSBox version by default, until of course World Tour came out which has no expansions or DOSBox version either. So yep, they handled it rather poorly with Blood which doesn't surprise me.

>>16460729

BloodGDX has Polymost render too. So, "true 3D" isn't a real improvement which make it stand out of sourceports. If it lacked this feature, the port would be actually even more inferior to free ones. This is the weakest argument people are using to justify getting Kaiser version. In fact, the only impressive thing about the render is that Kaiser probably made it himself, just like the people who developed Polymost.

I'm mostly just trying to figure out where he came from. Popped onto YouTube about a year ago with a whole presentation nailed-down. Has a TV Tropes page about him?! Seems way too polished for an amateur. Surely this guy has a history somewhere and has been around for awhile. I'd like to know more before making a final judgement call.

But I think to a degree you guys get too triggered. I don't like people self-censoring, either, and I know it's nice to have someone go balls-to-the-wall but these days even saying words like "cuck" will have a lot of people just not watch your videos. Would be better if he didn't give a shit for sure, but I also wouldn't be surprised if YouTube penalized channels that didn't try to appeal to a more mainstream audience to some degree. I don't recall him getting too buttblasted over Shadow Warrior, except to say it probably wouldn't fly these days (which is often said about a lot of things, including Blazing Saddles), and he's not wrong that alternative video websites are generally spammed with white supremacy and conspiracy theory videos and their algorithms do nothing to penalize this. That's observational. I will ding him for not wanting to mention people by name and refusing to use the word "cunt", though, which is a bit too far.

Sorry, but forgot that /v/ needs to be /pol/-lite and that any deviation or moderation from acceptably edgy opinions is bad.

I'm skeptical and I find his nitpicks to be hypocritical given that he seems to otherwise enjoy Postal 2 and has no problem making politically incorrect jokes as long as they don't cross a particular line.

But I'd still rather anons flood his comments and make up his audience than plebbitors if only for the sole reason that people like him are salvageable with enough pressure in the right direction.

At least he keeps the stupid skits to a few seconds each and uses them sparsely. At the height of ChannelAutism those guys were doing 5+ minute routines that were just bad parodies of whatever they were discussing and they'd be 70% of their video's runtime.

Having something be mostly gameplay is a step in the right direction

even if the platonic ideal of gaming videos is just gameplay with minimal technical (or no) commentary and definitely no faces.

Having a stepping-stone be a success is still a step in the right direction.

In this particular case it cannot be done without tricks, no matter how much you try to twist the lines.

The amount of bugs I've seen so far from anons, videos, and myself makes me wonder what the process behind this was because I don't think anything else they've done this for has turned out such a shitshow from the get-go. Ignoring whatever they're doing with SS1, of course.

My guess is that Nightdive may have forced the dude to "finish" this half-baked after NBlood came out. I mean they had announced that they were remastering Blood for a while now, but there were already two perfectly playable "sourceports" with minimal problems that people were already playing. I think they wanted to get their remaster out the door as quickly as possible so that people would buy it as the "definitive" version of the game on modern systems as opposed to all the ways to play the game for free.

People sees this as an "official release", likely because "oh my God! It's done by a real company and not some fan, it's distributed on a real platform, and it costs real money if I want it". That's one thing.

People have been buying crap like unfinished, broken, unplayable, day-one patch, pre-purchase shit for the past decade. It's normal at this point to have people praising this pile of shit.

Invidious embed. Click thumbnail to play.

Some examples of bugs that are still in the new updated version of Fresh Supply. Also according to the video description multiplayer is even worse now, can't confirm that though. Thank fuck I didn't pay money for this shit.

Anyone? There's no options for it in the fucking options.

It was rushed out for release.

Press t to enter cheat codes, and then enter 'mario' (without quotes). In vanilla it would let you choose to warp to any level, but here it will just say 'not implemented yet…'. That should tell you all you need to know.

What's with the weapon models? They seem off, somehow.

You mean the sprites in 1st-person or the voxels on the ground? Because I've seen people complain that some of the old voxels are fucked up.

Anyone with the current version of BloodGDX, is the HUD there? Is there a key to disable/reenable it? I can't fucking play properly if I don't know my health, ammo, and other shit.

Have you tried "-" and "+"? Really retarded question tbh. That's usually was the key for shrinking\expanding screen with HUD in it.
