Have you guys done any self-imposed challenges?

Right now, I'm just trying to complete the Level 1 Critical Mode challenge for KH3. The game comes with this option that lets your character stay at Level 1 and gain zero exp. This makes the game a lot harder since enemies can kill you more easily now. Forcing you to learn how to block properly and strategize now that you can't simply button mash your way to victory.

Despite dying a lot, I've been doing pretty well in this run and having fun. Although lately, I temporarily got stuck at Frozen's ice wolf boss since yesterday. (vid related; a player far more skilled than I)

Other than KH3, another series I like to do self-imposed challenges for is Zelda. Namely just minimalist runs where I don't collect any heart containers and keep Link and his gear as weak as possible. The last Zelda I did this for was A Link Between Worlds, where beating the final boss as a fragile Link felt so satisfying.

And besides KH and Zelda, there are likely many more self-imposed challenges out there that I haven't covered upon. Like Buster-only runs in classic Mega Man. Or those Nuzlocke runs in Pokemon games. Etc etc

c1fdc2  No.16450144

Not necessarily "challenges", but I almost always impose limitations on myself to increase immersion or challenge. Especially when there's items or upgrades that seem too strong, I just won't use them. I've done many runs in Terraria with special rules though.

I always play DOOM with no quicksaving besides one of two times:

>Before I want to check something that I know might kill me getting into a pool of acid for example

>At the start of th elevel.

I was doing a no knockout, no kills, no alerts, no continues and no camo, max difficulty run on mgs3, I got stuck at the fear because of a curse an anon cast on me and haven't played in a while. I did a no knockouts no quicksaves expert run of thief 1 in the past, that was fun. also I do hitman roulette for blood money pretty often.

I always do a fists only run of any game that will let me. I also used to use the worst weapon in the game in any multiplayer game just to piss off the other players. You'd be amazed how many people get mad at being killed by a peashooter or terrible shotgun/smg.

For some reason, I spent over half of my first Nioh playthrough as axe only, C agility.

sometimes I will go through the game with suboptimal stuff just out of sheer stubborness

it's this website thing https://thekotti.github.io/hitman.html it randomises ways to kill the targets and several restrictions and you try to clear the level that way. 4 extras can get pretty brutal in some missions.

Pokemon I play with no bought items, only what you find on the ground. And the "Set" battle style (no switching between turns). Doesn't make it terribly hard still, but at least there's no "Hyper Potion" spam on your overleveled starter.

Well, only small stuff like not savescumming, not abusing bugs or shitty AI etc but I hate it when I have to do it. When I was a kid and games felt hard, I tried to think "outside to box". I abused every dirty trick just to progress in the game. It was fun because games were hard and finishing a level felt like an achievement. Finding out bugs/abuses made me feel like I've outsmarted the game. Then I got older and better at games while at the same time games got casualized. So in order to cope with this situation I forced myself to play the game "as intended" and to think "inside the box" as a self-imposed challenge. Holy fucking shit how stupid that was. Forcing myself to think like a sheep. Once I realised what the fuck I'm doing I kind of stopped playing single player games. I just hate self-imposed challenges so much. Setting them up makes me feel like an idiot.

Now I'm sure some autists enjoy beating a game by pressing A only one and a half times and they use a lot of brainpower to figure it all out but that kind of shit is not for me. I like real challenges, not self-imposed ones. Game developers have one fucking job, to set up a challenge for the player. If they fail at this and the player has to set up their own extra challenges then the game is automatically shit if you ask me.

Playing OoE level locked on hard mode is a blast. Unfortunately the hardest part of the run is literally the 2nd area you pass through in the game and then nothing else can compare.

Is it really a self-imposed challenge if it's a built in game mode? Key word being self-imposed, at that point you could just about claim that different difficulty settings count as a self-imposed challenge.

For any arcade that can be won with a single credit I try to beat it with only one. Already done with The Punisher, RoboCop and Wardner, having some trouble with Aliens because the queen is a impredictable sometimes and I still don't know what's needed to open Sulaco's hatch.

Also, on the NES Star Wars I tried to make a perfect game, getting as much 1-ups possible. Got a 105% at the end.

Then I tried the opposite: going from the start straight to Hanger 96 without recruiting Han nor Kenobi nor saving R2. The TIEs blasted my ass for escaping Tattoine with no shields. After some retries I made it somehow: the Dianoga was also pretty hard with that starter blaster. The rest wasn't that hard and beat it with about 63,5%.

827f71  No.16451104

Not exactly a challenge, but in any game with good customization or fleshed out world I try to build a character or loadout that is roleplaying at least a little bit. Basically, I hate min-maxing and try to avoid it at all times because it makes the game boring as fuck. Bad games, like newer Fallout games, will give you amazing gear from the get go that makes the whole game a snoozefest. I pirated FO4 and decided to walk around randomly. Within an hour I had 2 or 3 new power armor suits aside from the one you get for free at the start and I realized that I was finding enough fusion cores to continually use power armor while exploring. I decided to make a gear gallery out of that one storage room in the Minutemen base By the time I filled it and fitted the base out with electric lighting, radio, and a water treatment device, the game had lost all appeal. I guess you could say I am pretty good at avoiding things that turn the game into easy mode.

>Bad games, like newer Fallout games, will give you amazing gear from the get go that makes the whole game a snoozefest

Don't pretend like Fallout didn't have that problem too. The spectrum of equipment is a joke and you can get some of the best start right at the start of the game in the boneyard.

Making the game harder for yourself is masochistic, which is a subset of BDSM, which is degenerate and cuckoldry.

I'm doing a playthrough of Dark Souls 3 without using spells or roll (I'm using a program that separates roll from run). Killed Hodrick all 3 times and beat Pontiff so far. One of the most bullshit things so far is that the large hollows with bowls will slam me into the ground until I'm dead, because you're supposed to roll out of this combo.

9b3b52  No.16451221

I try to avoid using ;lelchristmastree-tier weapons&armor if possible even if im gimping myself simply because it allways make the character look like shit.

Too bad most games with gear become nigh imbossibru if you do that or at the very least tedious since the only toned down to earth looking neat stuff is starter gear.

827f71  No.16451283

True, but that required at least some minimal amount of effort and it can be ignored easily enough if you want a challenge. I'm talking about "Hey there friend, looks like you've been walking around for two minutes, how about an abandoned suit of power armor?" Shit is absurd.

Games which can be minmaxed or cheesed easily have a dominant strategy and are objectively poorly designed. These are standards that were set before video games were even invented.

I do this too, but whatever my theme or character is I minmax the shit out of

if I just did general minmaxing I would have the same character as everyone else AND it would be easy, but if I say… minmax for something retarded like the striking damage on a magic staff, then its both kind of hard, a little unique, and catches people off gaurd in multiplayer games too

I disliked their autism with each having 5 levels where 2-3 of the difficulties were filler before the main challenge.
