There's more to it than that. They were good friends- besties. Thematically what it was presenting (I think) is the affect friendship can have on a person and how such closeness makes you absorb memes from people without even realizing it. For Cloud, the effect is moreso because of a traumatic event that ends with him falling into the Mako (think radioactive magic gunk that's sucked out of the planet for energy) and fucking with his head. Cloud and Zack fight Sephiroth in the Nibelheim Mako reactor. Zack gets his shit kicked in and cloud ends up killing Sephiroth (sort of) and after that things get kinda fuzzy for me. I know afterward Cloud is kinda out of it and Zack tries to take him someplace safe. Later on the Turks (think special hitman squad from the Shinra corp) and Shinra goons hunt them both down. Zack gets got at some point and Cloud end up floating around for a while until FF7 starts. They didn't want anyone who survived the Nibelheim incident to be alive. I don't know how Tifa made it out okay. Tit armor?

Crisis Core illuminates it more than FF7 did but I never played Crisis Core at all. From what I understand CC reveals more of Cloud and Zack's relationship.

Looking back on it… I guess for FF7, it's that the Aerith romance route is literally for cucks. She initially only loves Cloud because he somehow reminds her of Jack, her true love. To Aerith, Cloud was just the rebound choice to replace Jack after he died. She even admits this to Cloud during their saucer date.

To be fair though, she does seem to indicate on that same date that she began loving Cloud for who he was. Apparently getting over Jack and moving on to her new love, Cloud. However, by the time she realizes this, it's too late in the game and not too long before Sephy stabs her.

So until the date scene happens, she was essentially just leading Cloud on and hoping that Jack was still alive somewhere. The theme being that she was a flirty hoe.

Cloud is a failed SOLDIER so that means he was already weak from the get go. Genetic, effort, Jenova compatibility, motivation or otherwise. Fast forward, he gives Sephiroth the black materia which ultimately results in the death of Aerith and everything attached to that for both him and Zack. The Last Remnant confuses a lot of people who do not understand how to spring whole party attacks. It is a good game but I would start with something more simple, like FF12 or FF13 1-3, which all use different mechanics– it will give a good sense of which you would like. DQ is straight up classic RPG brought into the modern era, but playing newer greater rpgs will likely set you on a downward slope when playing older ones. Better to start early titles, in my opinion.

For the PSX era, you should definitely try Grandia 1, Lunar 1&2, Wild Arms 1&2, Legend of Legaia, Xenogears. Each game, has a different combat systems and not just different gimmicks, different atmospheres, different stories and themes and most importantly are good games.

Why manage, when you have god-like powers and more knowledge than the whole population to force everyone else to work and make the whole world to function in a better way?

The playable characters becoming rulers of the world, with their powers, knowledge money is infinitely more believable than they simply choosing to become wage slaves.

This is nothing more than the japanese propaganda machine telling the audience that "no matter what you do or gain, go back to work", to keep them from wanting a better life.
