To the anon asking about mid tier ruins:
There's a roaming robot few spiders in and around Obedience that you can loot easily enough, north of that is Burn's Tower for the unique NPC. Make sure to recruit him then loot everything and not the other way around as I tried it.
Further north and west along Leviathan Coast past the Cannibal city are a number of good places. Most Leviathans will leave you alone while you run to each ruin.. though there might be one asshole to run for your life from. Also there are many beak things.
East of West hive too, I haven't looked much further abroad.. See the picture attachments

A bunch of ninjas have some really good shit in their hide outs, easy money. The bounty themselves suck but that's part of the playthrough, the booty is where all the cats are made. The one in spine canyon is a good place to to clean up. The swamp has 2 easy ones. Kralia's chosen is easy and the shek there don't all attack on sight so as long as you have numbers you're taking the bounty.

Just started this game as a ronin scorchnigger. The first thing that happened when I walked out of The Hub was a group of hungry bandits tried to kill me, and I kited them around in circles in town until some trade ninjas killed them. Sold their pipes, got a katana and the saga of ronin nigger begins. I found an inn where there were locked chests upstairs and a guard, but the guard patrols downstairs randomly, so I'd have ronin nigger pick locks while he patrolled and pretend to sleep when he came back. More amusing than I might have thought. I also found a ruined Shek village with a ton of loot including high grade chain mail so I'm fairly well off. I've managed to get my toughness up to 8 by occasionally stepping in fights with bandits and such but my dexterity is only 3. Is there a more efficient way to level up combat skills and stats? I saw skin spiders once Fuck that shit

I wish there was a mod for highlighting enemies that aren't stealthed. My vision is honestly shit (I can't drive a car, to give you some idea) and while I really like the aesthetics of this game, it's just a bit dumb that I get "ambushed" by gorillos or something while mining because I was speeding up time while mining. It doesn't really make sense that the player has to rely on their own vision given that this is an RPG where the player is almost fully divorced from direct agency in the game mechanics. I just have a habit of pausing the game more regularly now, but it still annoys me.

Someone recommend a good zone to build in. I'm looking for nice flat ground with lots of resources to build my "perfect" compound. Currently I'm set up in the Gut, but the rough terrain fucks up my walls pretty badly.
Picture is how I've designed my base defenses. I use two watchtowers with turrets overlooking 3 gates. I avoid using any kind of complicated maze-like functions because I'm afraid it will just break the pathing and make the enemy break through a wall instead. Besides I get a lot more time (and turret shots) while the enemy is bashing down a gate than while they are running around anyway. Usually I put any ground defenders I want to use behind the second gate, by which point the enemy is already pretty weakened by the turrets. If the enemy breaks through the third gate they tend to want to go for the turret operators first, so I gate off the watchtowers themselves as well. This is mostly beneficial if a couple slip through on accident rather than if they manage to break down my third gate (which probably means I lost the fight entirely). Most of my characters can't actually fight so if the ground troops fail and the gates fail I'm pretty much dead. Placing those walls is a pain in the dick to start with, but trying to do it on rough terrain is nearly impossible.

I enjoy harvesting the Beak Things, but the terrain is giving me so much grief I want to move into something more interesting. Plus Okran's Pride is more central, so I not only get a new goal (eliminate the Holy Order), but I can make expeditions to other parts of the map more freely.

I don't understand how you guys play those mods that increase your squad size to 255 or whatever. My main party every playthrough has consisted of no more than 8-9 characters. Granted, I tend to fill up the other 20-something slots with support characters for my base, but they're all automated in their behavior. Just seems a pain to have to set up 20 sleeping bags to make camp when away from home. With the interesting recruit mod there's something like 50ish+ unique recruits.
Counting my pets and starters my army is a size of 82.
To add to this, squads should be a sizeable number without exceeding 22 (I think) in number to avoid scrolling on the squad tabs so you don't miss someone starving due to sticking themselves in a wall or something.

My best advice to you is to get some cash for some food and just start walking around and occasionally talking to people in towns when you find them. NPCs with advice are few and far between (I'd venture to say most towns don't have them). One guy gave me advice that says to never go to the northwest corner of the continent.
But the most engrossing part of the world is just walking around and watching all of these freakshow motherfuckers live their lives. Sneaking around the Deathyards in Fog Island, hearing distant screams from people being eaten alive and seeing Fogmen ritualistically eat people is one of my highlights in this game. Having a settlement will also cause things to happen. I got a free recruit who was a runaway slave from the Holy Nation because I set up a mining camp. Finding village ruins and exploring those is also highly rewarding

As far as I can tell there's no one "best" weapon, the good weapons do a lot of different things, but there are a lot of weapons that are just inferior or outright bad.
Blunt weapons are all utterly useless. Though they do great anti armor/anti robot damage, the enemy will get back up faster than you can knock them down.
Hackers are great single-target anti-armor. The best Hacker, the Paladin's Cross, does 30% armor pen which makes it good even against humans. Other hackers however just seem statistically weaker all-around. In my experience though in spite of the 23-reach Paladin's Cross only ever hits one or two enemies, I assume the same is true for other Hackers.
Heavy Weapons: Supposedly the Plank is the most damaging weapon, but it's more blunt than bleed so it suffers from "enemies getting back up" The Fragment axe is even worse, which leaves the Falling Sun as the only option. It's great damage and better at crowds than a Hacker, so I'd call it one of the best weapon options available.
Katanas: Nodachi has some of the best multi-target in the game. Katanas are overall fast and easy to use, but horrible against armor and robots so you need to bring some other specialists along. In general though there's no "tradeoffs" between them, they are just statistical upgrades from each other with the Nodachi or topper being best.
Polearms: The Nagitana does a good job of being a poor man's Topper, but that's about it. Polearms actually seem to do less with crowds than Katanas, so the choice between the two is pretty clear.
Sabers I'm still on the fence about. They might be just as good as Katanas but I haven't gotten much chance to use them at higher skill levels to find out.

I think higher-tier walls have denser harpoon placements. Tier 4 walls get 4 slots per large-section. Small wall sections have 0 harpoon slots (they also look uglier and are less efficient in materials), so try to straighten out your walls and use appropriate lengths to maximize the number of large sections.
Beyond that, Watchtowers are your obvious choice. Each watchtower has 10 slots on top. Keep in mind that Turrets can actually turn 360 degrees, so at least 7 of those slots should easily be able to face your target (the other 3 would have to shoot through the tower itself)
FYI, the two "outpost" type buildings (the last 2 researches) have ZERO turret slots. They are also really bad in terms of space (footprint vs usable space) and materials (requires more advanced materials to build, namely copper alloy). The only benefit to those building types is they can be built on extremely bad ground, for example you could have an outpost hanging off the side of a cliff with little effort.

Unarmored skeleton torso doesn't hurt to punch, in spite of also being made of metal, but the training will go slower that way.
Note that while this trains MA, weapon skills, melee attack, and Dexterity (very little strength because rusted junk weapons are comparatively light), it does NOT train melee defense or dodge. In order to train those you are going to have to actually spar with a high skilled opponent, so give your punching bag some prosthetic limbs and have some fully armed dudes on hand to put him down: Also another very important note: A limbless skeleton on a bed tends to fall through the world and disappear when loading a save. Make sure to pick up the skeleton torso before saving your game if you don't want to lose him. In a cage is fine.

One more detail: If you try to set up a training room inside your base every other asshole not set to Passive is going to run in, open any locked doors on the way, and try to immediately beat down the sparing partner for you. Unless you want to set EVERYONE to passive, I recommend building an actual walled/gated area to be your arena, they won't open locked gates. This doubles as a prison complex, because enemies that get into your base seem to free your prisoners. I've never actually seen them do it, but anytime I leave the gate open the prisoners, even the limbless skeleton in a cage, disappear on me.

Does anyone know exactly what skill is calculated when deciding if the enemy is "stronger than you" for the purpose of gaining attack skill levels? I've been doing a lot of testing on this, but so far I'm stumped.
Currently, I have Mad Cat-Lon and the Spider Foreman as my test dummies. Mad Cat-Lon supposedly has 100 weapon skill (all weapons), melee attack, melee defense, and 60 Dodge and Martial arts base. Spider Foreman should have 75 weapon skills, melee attack/defense, dodge, and only 10 Martial Arts. As a result of using both of them as training dummies, their Dodge skills have increased significantly. With current equipment, Cat Lon has 111 Dodge, and the Foreman has 109 Dodge (using dodge-boosting equipment because I thought it might help, I'm not sure).
There are only two things that I've been able to find out for sure, one, removing the weapon from EITHER target (leaving them unarmed) INCREASES the rate at which I gain skill xp. Two, Cat Lon grants significantly more skill XP than the Skeleton Foreman. I can't currently come up with a theory that makes sense with this data.

My current working theory is that when the enemy has no weapon DRAWN, regardless of whether or not they have one equipped, Martial Arts is the skill that is tested. When they have a weapon equipped (but not drawn) martial arts takes a penalty. Therefor in order to train using "punching bags", it's best to find enemies with the highest martial arts skill possible, remove their weapons, and give them martial arts boosting gear (such as assassins rags).

Vain settlement guy here again. I've made an iron mining camp in the Stenn desert, only a couple of in-game hours away, because I was tired of constant trading runs to hivers for iron plates. It was an ideal spot I found with 3 100 quality ore veins right next to each other. The only problem is I had no idea if I was technically in Shek territory or not and yesterday I found out when a proving group came to my doorstep and I ended up stopping there after seeing how much damage makeshift walls can take since I haven't been sieged before (it wasn't much). I have something like 11 guys now. I had a slow start on recruitment because the only easy to get to town with good amounts of recruits is the Shek city in the middle of their kingdom, and obviously they're all Shek when I wanted laborers, but now I have 11 people with about 6 being dedicated warriors (2 of them fresh and relatively inexperienced) that do some minor labor when they're not fighting.
Considering my forces are split between my main settlement on the Vain river and this iron mine, I'm weighing my options. It's possible that I could win the proving if I move all of my fighters to the mining camp and get the Shek war party to funnel through my gate, negating their massive numbers advantage. The problem is that Shek are tough motherfuckers that take forever to die, so I'm not confident about my odds on this strategy. I didn't expect much more resistance at this new camp since my Vain settlement is literally only visited by Hive traders–nothing else wants to live in acid river land, who woulda thunk?–so I only have makeshift walls. It's possible that I'd have enough time to upgrade my walls but I seriously doubt I'd have enough time to set up mounted crossbows, despite having all the plates I'd need.
The other option is simply packing up and leaving. It's a bare bones mining operation with a powered refinery, wind turbines to power them, a few storage boxes, a shack with two beds and a food store. I just came back with a ton of tech from an epic voyage to Catun though so I anticipate needing lots of iron, but there's always other locations.

He's the faction leader. Capturing or killing him has effects on the faction by itself, regardless of how you do it. The sub-leaders are going to come and attack your base, and when you kill or capture them the faction will be wiped out.
Meanwhile the armor king belongs to no faction, so you lose nothing other than his shitty shop that never sells what you actually want (and doesn't sell Crab armor at all).

I kind of get just wanting the varied playstyles, but anything other than a melee dude in crab armor seems to be a waste of space to me. First, "tanks" are unreliable. Everyone gets attacked even if you have certain characters set to "taunt". Putting anyone in anything less than 90% reduction armor (crab armor) leads to them getting fucking ganked. Second, Crossbows are a pain in the fucking ass to train and don't do enough to be worth it, plus you shoot yourself a lot (in fact the only way to train crossbow guys not to shoot your own guys is to have them shoot your own guys).
Martial Arts is powerful, but runs into the tanking issue because it basically has zero defense against weapons, dodge just isn't as good as melee defense and requires light armor on top of it. For thief skills, I usually just bring an alternate set of armor (ninja or assassins rags) and swap into that outside of combat if I need to go stealthy. Very rarely do I actually even bother with that though, only for snatching certain characters I can't fight my way through.

Again I feel compelled to call you names because no one can be this stupid and you must be hamming it up in order to make your argument sound more reasonable. You can kite entire groups in case things get hairy, assuming you aren't fighting beakies and your guys have 30 athletics, then turn around and fight after they've bled a bit. If you can't kite because you have trade goods, then your crossbows can soften them up before they get to you. Not having to heal your crossbowmen because they aren't in melee is a benefit. Being able to kite the enemy in case everyone else is defeated and rescuing them afterwards is a benefit.

Here's another non-specific hint: There are ruins with free prosthetic limbs lying around and many of them don't have enemies guarding it, or if they do they are slow enough to outrun. If you keep looking, eventually you will find a replacement. I do wish there were more NPCs that gave tips like this. The most information I've gotten from item descriptions and talking to people after trekking all over the southwestern quadrant is "Skeleton smiths are the best craftsmen" and "the northwest is a savage land filled with monsters."

for some context; traveling in a straight line from bad teeth to the waystation nearby lead to me being beaten unconscious by bandits that stole all of my dried meat. then after i woke up i was captured and attacked by a bunch of weebs with katanas that brought me to their tower and tied me to a pole, i then picked the lock after 1000 attempts, stole their medical supplies, and sprinted out of there where they chased me down and left me critically injured, but i was able to play dead long enough and heal in time to stay alive and continue towards the waystation. then a lone hungry bandit punched me unconscious and ran away after stealing the rest of my food. now im at the waystation sleeping… waiting for morning so i can hopefully buy a splint kit and stop limping.

Depends on the arm in question. Generally you're looking at major trade-offs, but not necessarily worse. For example I found a specialist arm which increases base Strength and Dexterity, but lowers several skill ratings substantially. I think that one is a combat limb.

Just got raided by Band of Bones at my iron mine. They beat up my front line once, then all crowded into my one tiny shack. It was quite amusing. Just about all of my warriors recovered in a minute, and due to their strange positioning I drew them out a few at a time. I also looted the gear off of the ones I knocked out and threw it on the ground. It ended up that I killed all except 3 or 4 who retreated. They only looted my Hiver soldiers weapons, which were the shittiest quality at refitted blade – nice going. Overall, a nice bit of free experience and a ton of vendor trash gear.

Just made my own mod that should massively improve pathfinding. I simply set all playable races (including animals) to have the exact same acceleration, turn rate, water avoidance, and footprint size, and I made sure the acceleration and turn rate were arbitrarily high (basically instant). This should eliminate problems where multiple characters in the same group attempt to follow different paths AND problems where low-acceleration overshoots the desired path and has to recalculate.
If this works, I have to wonder why no one else has done it already. It's just a simple numbers tweak.

Well so far it works flawlessly. I grouped together a bunch of characters and animals and sent them across the map and they actually reached their destination together in the same group in one click! Basically it takes the whole "realistic momentum" bullshit and throws it out the window in favor of a game that actually works. Maybe some animals might clip into buildings because of it, but they did that shit anyway and with the acceleration increase they are much less likely to do so.

There is one limitation I can't get around unless I want to make Pups and Elders exactly the same size. Currently the footprints are only the same for max size animals. If I wanted the footprints to be the same for all animal sizes I would set the minimum scale to 1 (same as max), instead of the roughly 0.35 it is right now. At the moment young animals might be able to find better paths than humans.

I've used "follow". It's absolute shit and causes animals to get stuck on terrain even more often than without. Besides, the acceleration change (applied to humans as well) should eliminate the problem of people running through walls and storage containers at high speed and getting stuck. Higher acceleration=higher deceleration, meaning they can now stop instantly and won't overshoot.
Overshooting was one of the main problems with pathfinding even with individual characters. The character would come to a turn and go past where the pathfinding algorithm told it to stop and turn, then the pathfinding would have to recalculate how to reach the destination from the characters new incorrect position.

I was attacked by Canhead last night at my mining camp and I thought that defensive gate/walls would at least hold them long enough for me to whittle them down with turrets, but they have a pathetic amount of condition and no armor. How does it make sense that my dudes take less than 20 damage from cannibal attacks due to their armor but they can bonk my concrete walls and metal portcullis with sticks for full damage? Like most real time tactical games you have to pause constantly. There's no such thing as a line in kenshi fights aren't fought in formations. Just exploit the AI's aggression by enveloping them and make sure your ranged troops are firing from the flanks. Give all your guys as much heavy armor as they can wear without being overweight. Envelop them how? The raids always outnumber my force. I have some pretty decent warriors but the numbers are just too much, not to mention that the cannibals have hackers. Also, they always aggro my ranged guys extremely hard to the point where the majority of the enemy force sprints through my melee units and charges the ranged guys so I end up playing tag with them, which is admittedly helpful because it gives my melee guys some space but also annoying.

The way you handle base assaults is to put your melee fighters in front of the gate, while having turrets manned where they can fire at the enemy over the walls. Enemy AI priority usually goes Ranged>Melee>Gates, so if you station your guys outside the gate they will fight your melee and not break down the gate. If you are on the inside they simply rush past.
Granted, once you have enough turrets you shouldn't need to fight at all, and with a well designed killbox the enemy won't even reach the gate. See my layout here >>16470754 I have 3 gates. One on the outside is where the enemy gathers. Base raids will (assuming the pathing doesn't fuck up) always gather outside of your outermost gate before they attack. This gate actually stays open most of the time, it just lets me control the enemy start point. The second gate is the main defense. I position the turrets so that most of the enemy is dead before they reach that gate, and then I can continue shooting them while they attempt to break down the gate itself. The third gate is where I put my melee usually. By the time they get through the second gate there usually aren't very many of them left, so the melee simply cleans up and the third gate prevents the enemy from just rushing past the melee. I can (sometimes do) put my melee in front of the second gate instead, mainly because my design is a little messed up and the turrets don't seem to shoot into the second killbox.
The water helps slow them down, otherwise you pretty much HAVE to fight with your melee in front of the gate.

I decided to take it to the extreme with my new outpost. I haven't got the turrets set up yet, I only just now finished the walls, but I don't think anything is going to survive swimming all the way in that channel unless I want it to.

I actually just use skeletons for my turret gunners because I don't have to feed them. In my experience gunners will starve to death on the job if you don't micromanage their food. The rest of my crew is human and shek. I'd never use a skeleton as a melee fighter simply because they can't wear helmets.

I'm mostly vanilla with some tweaks I've accumulated.
<256 recruit and squad
Default limit is 30 characters total. That includes animals. If you want a functioning base and a strong away-team, you are going to need to increase the limit. 256 is excessive but nothing says you have to actually recruit that many people.
<Less Foliage and Rocks
0x version. Pretty much necessary if you spend any time at all in or around Stobe's Garden. Yes it makes the terrain look boring, but at least it loads faster and doesn't kill both your frames and your pathing.
<Adventurer's Guild - Lore Friendly Recruitment
Go to the guild rep, pay a fee, and they send about 8 recruits to your outpost (who you also have to pay for). This is basically the only mod that will give you non-unique skeletons. They are expensive though.
<Slopeless
Increases building tolerance. Build on uneven ground, level out your buildings, even build overlapping structures. Doesn't really let you do everything but it helps a lot in base design.
<Bleeding requires aid kits
Or some kind of mod to increase combat lethality. When your enemies get up for the hundredth time on 4x death chance you know it's time for some adjustment. This mod makes both blood loss and wound degeneration much slower to stop on its own. Combined with the 4x death chance option in vanilla the vast majority of enemies will die the first time you knock them down, provided you win the fight and nobody comes along to patch them up. Not recommended for early game.
<Storage Sheds
Or some kind of storage mod. There are a thousand different mods to tweak the maximum amount of storage space for various containers. This mod instead adds buildings (using the small shack model) that store a huge amount of materials. I find the (comparatively) large, exterior-only buildings to be a good compromise between not needing a million storage boxes and not needing to design your base for storage at all.
