At it's best it was only ever mediocre, and was like GTA in that it sold itself on controversy and spectacle. Which is why it pretty much faded from relevancy after MK3. The gore was nothing special anymore, and it already won it's right to exist while games lime DOOM and GTA got the controvesy thanks to columbine. I mean, ripping spines out is pure fantasy, but guns and shooting games… that could still scare people since that shit happens fairly regularly.
After the MK side story games (I only remember SubZeros), the whole franchise fell off my radar until MK11 and I figured it'd be cool to see where the franchise had gone. Nowhere good, it turns out. Now, instead of giving the finger to censors and being true to it's edgelord rebellious roots like a MK game should, it's become an establishment franchise and cowing to PC culture because WB owns their balls and they don't want to scare away the advertisers and sponsors or damage their prospects of turning it into a games as service where they perform brutalities on the bank account of anyone dumb enough to step into their trap.
They're fucking sellouts, at a time we most need devs to stand up and tell the morality police to go blow it out their asses. That's unforgivable, and I hope the franchise burns.

Yes but it has less to do with nostalgia and more to do with the shock factor and counter culture. MK marketed itself as being the kind of "bad" game your mom doesn't want you to play, this coupled with it being in the news and becoming a linchpin for politicians, alongside DOOM, gave the game a sort of forbidden fruit kind of status. Also, since fighting games were still on diapers, MK was considered good for its time.
As for modern MK, it will never penetrate the asian market and will always be regarded as a subpar experience. MK11 will die soon, I give it 1-2 years max before everyone stops playing it competitively

Basic but was really known for the tits and gore. A little bit corny at times but wasn't afraid to embrace it. Was never really a competitive fighter and it shouldn't be aiming for it. You don't need the fighting game community to validate a game that was clearly aimed at casuals. They've upped the gore now but now they've pretty much betrayed their roots.
Also, they've positioned themselves into what looks to be a safe perpetual reboot with little risk for subsequent sequels. Just changed the X-Rays into Fatal Blows, instead of just making 2 X-Rays per character which people have been asking for to break up the monotony. If the Sonic the Hedgehog director can course correct to change the initial Sonic design after the backlash from that terrible trailer, why is it so hard for game developers to do the same? Not all complaints should be listened to but you should be able to discern when criticism is valid.
Contrary to what blue check marks may say, people don't complain for the sake of complaining. They speak loud and clear when they see something is going in the wrong direction. If they didn't care about you, they'd say nothing at all and let you fail on your own. It's weird in what is supposedly an active social network and you can get feedback immediately, that people willing choose to ignore criticism to the ones that actively want to support you. It's like the body rejecting an unusual pain they feel daily and not getting it checked out. Nah, don't think so. I believe they went along with the initial design believing sonicfags and general population will eat it up (not that farfetched, mind you). Sonic is nowhere near as relevant as it was 15 years ago, let alone 25, so there aren't as many hardcore fans left. Most of them either went to greener pastures of autism (CalArts trash, MLP, etc) or moved on. Non-fans who are at least familiar with Sonic mostly go along with the "Sonic was never good" belief. So the main audience for Paramount is kiddies who will lap up pretty much anything.
The sheer amount of backlash from both fans and general audience now presents a risk of the movie getting flopped hard. If we disregard the fans' opinions, it can be assumed that Paramount datamined enough to agree with the general audience that Sonic's movie design will look nightmarish even for the kids. Now they attempt to save face with a typical "see guise we listen to u" scheme in order to appease the audience and so far I guess it's working.
Probably the only reason they even went with that scheme is that the movie doesn't seem to carry a specifically left-wing agenda (well, there's a nigger music, but it's everywhere anyway). If Paramount was lauding Sonic's movie design as "empowering POC and trans rights bix nood muhfugga", they wouldn't have bothered redesigning Sonic so close to release and doubled down like what NRS is doing with MK11 (they tried to defend the design when the whole legs shitstorm was going on, but that shitstorm was merely a blip on the radar compared to now).

I know the games got progressively more complex as time went on and slightly more respectable in the FGC, but it was never considered top tier fighting game.
I guess at the time it was a fighting game for people who didn't or couldn't play the good fighting games (street fighter, samurai showdown, fatal fury…). You can look at it as a very different sequel to an established franchise. It's not a good sequel, but it's fun enough and good at doing it's own thing (e.g. Call of Juarez Gunslinger and Serious Sam's Bogus Detour). I have no problem with the early MK titles because even though they spawned a shitload of ultra violent fighter clones, none of those stuck around to "soil" the real fighters.

The guy has fuck-all for movie credentials, so he probably doesn't want to make his big debut a rolling trash fire that will incinerate his career. It's bad enough he got saddled with making a Sonic movie. The studio, for their part, is the one who just doesn't want to lose money. There is no passion for the franchise or the movie project, as that much has been made crystal clear by the fact that a trailer that bad even exists in the first place.
Game developers, on the other hand, are in a slightly different situation. Mostly there's not going to be outrage for an unknown IP, and for an established brand - developers are going to feel emboldened to bully their consumers to save on costs since most people who buy video games - don't even make it to the half-way mark, and the people talking about video games (in public) don't play video games. So the changes don't effect them - and these are the same kind of mental deficients who spread the "Take my Money" meme, self-insert, and reinforce their egos with brand identity rather than build character. They'll buy shit just to let it sit on a shelf and give them "cred", or will stream it and pretend to enjoy it because it's the hyped new hotness and that's what brings in the streamer clicks.
As for indies, money is a much more limiting factor - but there's also a strong clique of "artistics" who actively revile their own fanbases and take pleasure in pissing them off if they refuse to recognize their genius vision or dare criticize their unique expressions of art. To a larger degree, there's also a much more personal tie to a project and a rejection of outside influence and advise… which fair enough, if a developer doesn't want to make a change to assuage public backlash because it conflicts with their vision. But they shouldn't get pissy if that ends up translating into lower sales and a lack of repeat business.

With the release of 11 I finally decided to sit down and try out an MK game, so I started with 9. It's pretty fun. It feels really goofy and janky compared to my normal fighting game choices (and I still can't seem to get combos to flow nicely), but otherwise it's enjoyable. I find the lower-detail X-Rays and fatalities almost charming compared to the over-the-top gore porn of X and XI. This feels like it was made to be risque and fun.

Mortal Kombat is has been known to have were Easter eggs, secrets that add a little charm. We don't even need to go back to the original, in Mortal Kombat 9 you were able to fight classic smoke and Jade and they had there bullshit moves. Mortal Kombat 11's krypt was a fucking adventure for day one buyers, you had to listen to every rumors and try it out to find out if it works. (My dumbass tried to get to the roof)
A Cinematic story, that put a standard so high it damned Street Fighter 5 and made Marvel vs. Capcom infinite feel inferior and shallow.
No weebshit, they honestly have a girl named Katana and put her in a ninja suit. They have still been running with it still till this day.
Main character isn't invincible, Liu Kang got killed, Johnny Cage got shot up, Cassie cage is too young. The only thing that feels invincible right now is the New God of MK11. (I ain't spoiling it.)
NRS stop relying on fanservice in a sexual manner, ever since the popularity of the story mode campaigns and lore fags popping up left and right. NRS has been focusing on making the story intense and interesting to watch, it does have downside still fatalities has suffered, outfits fits the character's personality, reference the past, has to do with a reference, or dlc outfits. To be honest it's not much of a lost, the pinnacle of fanservice was during the 3D era but that shit got them bankrupt. And there hentai is still outdated I still see the same hentai comics that were in 2010.
They're relying on fanservice that hype the fans, finally putting the goddamn Mortal Kombat movie music in the game. Hopefully they're smart enough to just remix it every time they have a new game rather than have some stupid fucking idiot rap about being a gangster.
The only cons I see for the series is:

The ability to freely backtrack and fight foes is so damn fun, I lost track of how much time I spent in the forests just killing Zombies and Blood Stone statues. I just wanted to be able to play as Reptile or Baraka or Johnny Cage on repeat playthroughs, but they didn't make them playable outside VS mode.
On another note, it seems that according to Reptile's statements in MKX vs Alien and now the statue here making a reference to the movie, that this is actually what they look like when not disguising themselves as a humanoid. If Reptle does get added later on as a playable, I do hope they address this and make him more bestial since according to the story, he just fucking vanished for no reason.

I don't know how you even come up with something like this, for all the gripes people had with DR3, at least it's gameplay was fun and smooth, and generally, the ideas from dr2 evolved into something more coherent, even if that dead rising charm was long gone. That's arguable. Granted good artists can salvage pretty much anything, but in most cases artists simply improve shitty designed characters. MKX Mileena outfit was also pretty bland. Without mask she looks like shit in X, but her hair and eyes brings magic when her mask is on. I love puffy short or medium hair, but they just ruined her face, I don't think that lips is the sole problem though, the face itself is quite bad.
What's worse is that her lips served only one purpose: a shitty death scene which happens in the most mediocre mode which was a huge letdown compared to MK9.
