Genesis has a built-in synthesiser which sounds much better than the SNES's sampler with only a fucking tiny amount of RAM for said samples.
The SNES can still have some amazing tunes, but even as a Nintendrone I would prefer a full synth instead of the sampler in the SNES.

FM synthesis can sound great if used right. The problem is most devs did not put in the effort and basically used it like a MIDI chip with dogshit soundfonts. Good FM synth on Genesis is games like S3&K or Castlevania Bloodlines. And relatedly since PC-98 has FM synth as well, ZUN's older Touhou games.

You can make the exact same argument for the SNES. People tend to forget how muffled a lot of SNES games sound in the wrong hands. EWJ is notable example of a game composed for the Genesis and then had its music lazily converted to the SNES.

That's a keyframe issue. So basically, any retards cargo cult specifying -g 9999 to FFmpeg are saying an infinite space between them is OK. The problem with that is seeking needs a keyframe prior to it as a reference, and if it has to go back too far, in mpv for example you either get glitchy seeking (using arrow keys) or a delay to do it (clicking the OSD) video example related. Notice the further into the video the longer it takes to do. That way of encoding allows the video to be tiny since it's just storing one frame, but it also means it's effectively got a single keyframe at the beginning.
You can encode it with VP8 which will basically make it a regular video, and specify a low framerate but it will result in video taking extra space.

>I've been wanting to get into composing chiptunes for some time because I really enjoy them but so far I haven't done it.
When I started composing chiptune, I was rigid on trying to cram everything when the secret was there from the beginning: take advantage of the limitations.
For example, the VRC7 chip only has one slot for the composer to create their own patch. What happens when two of them play at the same time?
The chip just reverts to a sine wave for a split second before cutting off, this due to the chip only capable to playback one custom patch which is the one that was created before the other like a hierarchy.
If you use a preset patch that has a long release like the chorus patch then if you switch between the 2nd custom patch and the chorus patch rapidly, then you have a sine wave as your instrument. I used this effect in some of my pieces. Most of the time, you would discover its flaws on accident then used it to the best of your abilities.
This is only scratching the autism when it comes to learning about the different sound chips and executing the techniques.

It's funny because Klepacki, the guy behind the memorable soundtracks to the Command and Conquer games, actually did the Atreides soundtrack. David Arkenstone did the Harkonnen soundtrack; to my knowledge, nothing Arkenstone has ever done before or since sounds anything like the Harkonnen music at all.
I don't think the Atreides soundtrack is bad, per se - it's just that the other two faction's soundtracks are that much better.

Your faggoty political opinions aside, I do think it's ironic that they're born in a generation where almost the entire human catalogue of music is available at their fingertips, most of it for free, yet they need to signal they wish they were there when it was new. For what purpose? So that they can drive to a record store, pay twenty times what it costs nowadays if you want to buyfag, then get treated to lower quality audio playback where they are stationed at a fixed position if they want to listen to it (at least until boomboxes and walkmans came around)?
Other things were much better about those periods of time (and they had their own problems that are distinct from ours), but the convenience of the Internet is exactly what allows these freeloading shits a platform to bitch about not being there when it first came out.

I will never forget the first time that i chose "rebel against the colony" as the final upgrade. It was during a multiplayer match, and as soon as i clicked in the option to rebel, this song started to play, a giant logo reading "YOU REBELLED AGAINST THE COLONY" started spinning on the center of the screen, all my workers became soldiers, all my ships turned into steel warships, all my cavalry and such turned into mounted gatling guns, the resource gathering became disabled, and my only shipments were more soldiers, more gatling guns or more ships, with the only option being kill everyone so you raise the exp bar in order to be able to request more shipments of soldiers, guns and warships.
It was an amazing scene to behold, and a pleasant surprise.

THere's this, the composer is doing some music for Xeno Crisis, a homebrew game on the Genesis. Great composer for the YM2612.
And the video I posted was by the chiptune group, Kulor Research Labs Inc. Many composers doing amazing pieces on different soundchips.
But, this isn't vgm related more so leaning the demoscene aspect of pushing soundchips to their limits.
