they're just shmups except you control the scrolling and where you aim

Gotta shill my more obscure mentions i guess
>surviv
A butt royale game that gets some things right. No loot-rich retard mass drop locations and no lobbies, you just get thrown into a recently started match on a random spawn point. Sniping is harder since sight range can only be upgraded with scopes found on containers. Also has more interesting weapons like dual M93Rs, MIRV grenades and a double barrel shotgun. Still suffers from underage fags and solo teamers though since it's a .io game. Thankfully no mic faggotry either.
>God's Trigger
Co-op fast paced TDS with special abilities such as invisibility, bullet time and a "wall of fire" that turns your bullets highly explosive.
>Strain Tactics
RTwP tactical game. You can guide your units and make them fight and move automatically with pathing, or manually control them yourself. Lots of equipment to pick from whether you want heavy turretlike tanks or average troops.

Teleglitch - great little rogue like, fast paced with crafting on the fly and youve gotta circle strafe and kite most enemies. You can go a long time without finding ammo or health packs. Very replayable. Controller supported.
Dead Nation - some will hate, but this game can be super fun once you settle in to the fact that the starting rifle > every other weapon. The alternate weapons can be a blast to play with however, and the sub weapons, (grenades, flares, etc.) are worth their weight in gold. More than a few zombie types, the levels are expansive and you can customize/upgrade your weapons/armor. PS3/4/Vita exclusive *fucking soyny**

First off go play some OG arcade Robotron 2084 right the fuck now, this game is absolutely glorious in every way.
Never was too big on other early top down shooter because iming isn't
As always Assault android Cactus is probably the best one or at-least among the best recent ones
Crimsonland is still a fair bit of fun, the newer version less so but still fun in a way, gotta try to find one of the bootleg / modded version someday I remember someone saying they were really good.
Alien Shooter and other games by Sigma team are fairly fun in a more casual way too but iirc the western version got massively shafted.
UBERMOSH / SWARMRIDER are also pretty great if all you're looking for is an adrenaline rush
Synthetik is an interesting take on the genre but it has fairly massive issues stemming from the roguelike elements that don't mesh all that well with the pseudorealistic tactical shooter style it went for.
Still have yet to try a few of the well known recent ones (RUINER, Hotline Miami, Neon Chrom etc) should get to it sometime
I've had several people recommend I try X-Morph: Defense although it's not entirely a top down shooter, not sure how good it actually is, anybody here played it?

X-Morp is solid mix of Tower Defence and shumps. Worth money if you like Tower Defence games. Ruiner is realy good. They should make more classes and 2 player co op if they ever make Ruiner 2. I realy like that world.

Someone recommended Operation Carnage for DOS in a "early 90s games" thread. The game features cool MOD music, three weapons, a handful of power ups (triple shot, a satellite that sprays bullets all around you, shields, weapon boost), varied enemies, giant bosses, branching paths, and an oddly prophetic context for the mayhem. I wish there would be a key to lock your aiming direction when you’re not firing, but otherwise, it’s pretty good, still a lot of fun, and I would definitely recommend.
I like how simple the top-down shooter format is with its one-screen-at-a-time arcade style. There’s no fluff, no overly complex rules, just pure unadulterated mayhem. It reminds me of the non-stop action and adrenaline rush of games like Centipede (albeit Centipede is more of a top-down space shooter a-la Space Invaders). I miss power ups in current games. You can upgrade/mod your weapons, but it’s not the same as having one power up that affects all of your arsenal for a limited amount of time. Being able to enjoy the newfound firepower for only a few seconds makes you crave for the appearance of the next power up.
It’s one wave after the other, one screen at a time, simple, good fun. Love it.

>but I never really beat the final stretch
You basically have to have good health regen and a lot of ammo / weapon with ammo regen, the disco deathfloor room is really hard and it gets worse fast and that's assuming the managed to get past the tanks unscathed, the final boss is more of a formality after that room, assuming you're not dying or completely dry on ammo it's not too hard.

Nex Machina is a modern spiritual successor to smash tv as Eugine Jarvis himself helped work on the project. Shame the devs of this game are working on some shitty battle royale game now.

However on the bright side a game called is coming out soon called Bulletrage that allegedly has some ex-nex machina(housemarque) people working on it, it's really fun, I got into the beta of it.

It was really cool before the guys who made it tried to make it more multiplayer and make money off of it. Same thing happened with Dino Run, they ended up just killing their only 2 good flash games

The saddest thing for me about Surviv is no ability to add your duo after the game
I found myself rejoining the game a few times hoping to met the dude I just won/played with
My streak is 5 times in a row
They could also make the teams into little lobbies so you later join the game together, that would encourage teamwork and finding your team again

Does Foxhole count for a top down shooter ?
If yes then I gotta say its one of the most fleshed out war games out there, highly recommend it, get it on sale but do get it, great game, fun community, very fun mechanics.

To be perfectly honest I think this is a genre that has consistently failed to live up to its expectations. The original Robotron 2084 got it, Shock Troopers 1 and 2 got it, but scores of Western developers have failed over and over to understand the arcade design concepts behind the genre's origin.

I've heard Running with Rifles was similar in combat but that the logistics and ressource gathering parts weren't similar to foxhole.
I think having the players gather ressources and craft/build the weapon shipments and ammunition aswell as buildings and vehicules and other supplies is pretty unique, its way better of a craft system than most games that like to tote that concept around.

True, but the funny thing is that I tried it after trying Nuclear Throne don't bother it's mediocre at best, and it actually felt less cheap than that
But yeah most of the game is figuring out the spawning pattern, getting the big spread gun and hoping you can aim and kill stuff fast enough before it does close to you, and then you have the local gimmick that changes and gets more ridiculous the newer the game is

I recently played through Postal Redux. It was alright, but really easy and I was disappointed that you couldn't do executions like in Hatred. I do like the more dark humor and comedic angle RWS goes with more than Hatred's super serious bleeding edginess.

Brigador is style over substance. It's an okay game overall but it would have been a complete failure if not for the visuals, music and setting/theme. It was exemplary in all secondary characteristics but it's mediocre in terms of gameplay and game systems. If they improve that with their next game it could be truly amazing, so I hope their relative success hasn't made them complacent.
