I'm banging my head against every hallway, every door, every nook and cranny hoping to find some secrets, alternate pathways, open world only to end up with nothing.

Fuck linear level design, but especially fuck level design which lets on like there was more planned and more stuff going on, but they add locked doors for decoration's sake.

Any respectable level designer doesn't lead you on into dead-end hallways and locked doors. They have the decency of JUST NOT ADDING THEM.

They also have that bad habit of putting every entrance and exit to the sides and as hidden as possible.

I liked that in Bioshock Infinite, they gave you an arrow, that pointed to the story section, so always used it, and always went the other way.

I found out about the Ice Sanctuary shit nearly 6 years after I first played that game, and only because my school finnaly had a computer with Internet connection.

Love that game, but holy shit, fuck whoever thought that one up.

The "only Virus can enter Grey Mansion, only Vaccine can enter Ice Sanctuary" shit can eat a barrel of dicks too, holy fuck is that anoying. Especially because the clues they give you about it are "Digimon of a certain nature can't go there." But "Nature" pertains to your Mon's Elements (Fire, Nature, Wind that sorta shit) and it confused 12 year old me.

Also:

>lol, let's have this one rare enemy have 1/100 chance of spawning on this area when you enter. And make it mandatory to clear the game 100%

>ahaha, wasn't that funny? Let's do it three times instead of one

>Any NPC ally you might have gets script killed or just isn't worth restarting the level 20 times till you save him.

>NPC either walks too slow or runs too fast. You don't have any auto walk(Guild Wars) or follow option like in Runescape.

>Story-related NPCs you have to kill at the end game always narrowly escape or even better they suddenly gain super speed or outright disappear when you get too close. No matter how hard you try to shoot that sucker, all the doors magically close behind him.

>NPC you painstakingly escorted gets kidnapped anyway

AvP1, 2, 3 have the same exact problem. Among many other corridor shooters have this problem.

Compared to say C&C Renegade where the level design is semi-open world. You have a large map and you get to explore it how and when you want it. Some of the enemy buildings have insanely huge underground structures ripe for exploration, which is entirely optional. It was full of secondary objectives and optional areas which you weren't obligated to fulfill.

Same for Serious Sam, again it had some huge areas and valleys and it was filled with secrets. The video I posted is an entirely secret level which you can skip if you don't know how to pass the bridge in the earlier level.

I didn't even know of the latter section of the level at 4:00. I got to play it again now. There's always something to be found in replaying these video games, unlike other ones.

This is retarded and you don't know shit. AVP1 was a Quake like labyrinth full of secret stashes and dead ends.

f730b6  No.16460534

That does bring up a point though. How DO you treat secret areas in games? I feel like when they're hidden in such a way that you have to look up a guide then you're not doing it right. It just feels like you're expecting the player to be clairvoyant or some shit.

I think a player should have the means to find secrets on his first playthrough of a level, but not in such a way that it's painfully obvious either.

>>16407024

What I do is

>come across a crossroad in the level

>pick one way and only go in a little bit

>try to see where it leads from where I am

>go back to do the same with the other paths whether I can see where one leads or not

This sometimes leads to a lot of needless back-and-forth, but I don't like missing content so I don't mind.

Funnily enough I still managed to miss a lot sneakily hidden pathways when playing Sekiro.
