OP says it all, share Indie games that aren't shit, perhaps with a short summary. Ideally not something every man and his dog knows about, e.g. Hollow Knight. It's hard to find anything worth playing due to all the crap so this seems as good a method as any for finding ones worth playing.
Battle Brothers - Tactical Combat game with a fairly freeform structure and random generation of maps, character stats/traits/backgrounds, quests and encounters, receiving regular expansions. Learning by dying is the name of the game if you're not a savescumming wimp.
Simmiland - Small god game that plays kind of like a real-time Doodle God (old ArmorGames title), doesn't have a whole lot of staying power but trying to get your little civilization running is quite bemusing. Probably better off being pirated if you dislike paying for games that only last several hours.
Caves of Qud - Open world RPG/Roguelike with an offbeat sci-fi setting, if you prefer things to be finished first just keep an eye on this as it's still early access. Devs and inner community are goons, so you may want to pirate.
Monolith - Roguelite room-based shmup, superficially resembles Binding of Isaac but isn't shit, has quite a lot of content. Devs have a few large DLC packs planned.
Towerclimb - The only roguelite platformer I've played that wasn't shit. Very focused on pure platforming with minimal bullshit, some great stage design and no metaprogression, don't be deterred by the visuals as this is a really good game. Expansion is planned but is taking its sweet time.

Not all western indie devs are commies. Just most of them. So you have to do research to make sure you are not giving money to people who want to ruin your hobby, country, and life. Or don't give money at all and still try the games, all you waste then is time. It's hard to sift out the shit but there are some fun stuff like Kenshi. I've been trained to hate nu-pixelart, so any game going with that has to work hard to not be dismissed out of hand.

Inide games from the west have a problem, some might acknowledge it and some don't. You are free to have your opinion.
Thos who like these type of games, yeah, they sure are going to make a thread like this but you have to understand that there is another side of this coin. Call them faggots all you want.
Indie cade, fez shit, corruption in journalism and what not, is just the tip of the iceberg.
Speaking from a more gamer like side, the biggest problem with all those west indie pixel games, there are too many of them, you play them for an hour and than move on to the next one. A lag of soul and indepth story, sometimes one out of three have a cool game idea/mechanic but thats it. On top of this, you get one rouglike after another, one west jrpg after another, one funracer after another.
On the other hand, there are perls hidden nobody is going to talk about because of all the smoke screen crap flying around.
Grimoire, Distance, minetest,
but one could say they are also shit, you can't simply make an opinion and tell people this is an objective view.
Now it gets even worst with those indie games, lets have a look back when minecraft was developed, everything was fine, game was good, for an indie game. But look what happened after the 1.3 update when beds where intorduced. More and more crap was added in, the indie game tried to apeal to a wider audience. And now it is just a diversity flag fucking itself each day in its digital ass.
you know what killed indie games?
as soon the developed started to make games for money and not for the love of making video games, remember the difference befor 2007, befor the web 2.0. We got a shit ton of open source well made video games, for free, still in development, still the only flag ships out there
wesnoth, tuxcar, openra, projectX, ottd
since over 10 years no other flag ship open source indie game was developed again.

2D obstacle course platformer. Excellent music, excellent visuals, excellent gameplay. Gets pretty difficult by the end with a focus on advanced tech like bouncing off spikes but it's worth it even if for the first few easy levels.
>Copy Kitty
Kirby: VR missions. Don't let the shit graphics fool you, this is a pretty good game with two playable characters that play pretty differently, one's a basic 2d platformer style and the other is a more advanced floater style where you need to git gudder with how you use powers.
>Katana Zero
Recommended pirate because it's a short, easy and incomplete game, but the fun I've had with it was pretty good. While it has too much story faggotry and doesn't offer much beyond two secrets(one's a boss, the other are alternate weapons which really don't change that much), the pure gameplay is great and I wish it came with a level editor.
>Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages
2D space dogfighting game with an excellent amount of customization options and very satisfying combat.

Wild Guns Reloaded, a remake by the original devs of the original wild west steampunk lightgun shooter Wild Guns for the SNES with even higher-quality music and pixel art, two new playable characters where you play an Irish hambeast lobbing grenades and a doggo which controls a drone, and even new stages

Also want to plug The Ninja Warriors Once Again, which is a remake of The Ninja Warriors Again by the same guys who did Wild Guns Reloaded, and is slated for release this summer. It's a beat 'em up where you play as cyborg ninjas, and this remake expands the playing field so unlike the SNES version there's room enough for 2-player co-op, redone higher quality graphics (Kunoichi's power reactors are bigger now), and even two new characters, one of which is a shortstack ninja hime with extendable arms, and the other guy is so fucking huge that without context you'd think he was a boss character. OP here with some more not-shit games.
Underrail - Fallout-esque CRPG with a really nice balance between combat and exploration/questing. Quite minmax heavy but has a good amount of build variety with nearly all builds being viable and the majority having some neat advantages based on weapon choices and so forth. Also features a unique XP system that gates level ups behind exploration rather than killing enemies, so combat/grinding isn't required. Has a large expansion coming out this year.
Brogue - Freeware roguelike that takes direct inspiration from Rogue. Features some really nice ASCII visuals such as shimmering lava/water/gas and lighting, as well as a really good UI. "Builds" are purely determined by what gear you find and enchant (upgrade) with scrolls you find throughout the dungeon. Between the variety of gear and consumables, as well as a great map generator and wide variety of dungeon features Brogue is easily the best "simple" Roguelike around.
Exanima - Real-time dungeon crawler with combat, movement, etc based on a physical simulation, is pretty unique as a result, Exanima is a first offering before a larger game called Sui Generis the devs have planned. However both are in development hell, project is unlikely to collapse but updates are few and far between. WebM quality is kinda shit but it should give you the gist.
Steamworld Heist - Turn based tactics shoot-out game. Plays kind of like worms in that turns generally end after you fire your weapon, most projectiles bounce or ricochet, with some weapons providing laser guides to assist indirect attacks. You accumulate different characters as you progress that have different skill-sets, abilities and favored weapons, some additional variety is provided by randomized loot. I advise playing on the hardest difficulty available as lower difficulties are generally trivial.
Bad North - A simplified RTT game, you control up to 4 units of 3 archetypes in defending tiny randomly-generated islands from viking invaders. As you progress you assign currency gained by successfully defending islands to upgrade units and provide them with abilities and auxiliary items. Starts out really slow but later on good timing, positioning, and troop management become essential and the game becomes pretty tough. All said though this game doesn't have a huge amount of staying power as there isn't much variety between runs and the slow starts are off-putting. Some content updates are planned for this year.

Fuck.
If you like strategy games Arcen Games has a lot available. AI War and Skyward Collapse are both real fun. Bionic Dues is fun too if you want a roguelike + strategy type game, though the micromanagement between missions is a bitch.
Axiom Verge is great if you like Metroid. Looks good and plays good, lots of guns and optional shit. No idea if it has much sequence breaking though.
Not as good as those two, but interesting, is Heat Signature. You break into ships and preform some mission (stealing something, killing someone, rescuing someone) with a lot of gadgets and time pause mechanic. Though there are some major issues and it gets a bit boring after a few hours. Pirate or buy on sale.

I'm playing it and I don't like that you have no quick way to recharge your za warudo. With MP you can graze enemies during za warudo to recharge, and if you graze enemies in normal time you get health, but the timestop only recharges by waiting. This is a problem because the game often requires timestop for platforming in quick succession, and you're often forced to break the flow and stand still while your timestop recharges. It would be better if you could also get timestop charges from grazing during normal time and there were enemies strategically placed around to let you keep the flow.
Other than that I'm liking it a lot.

Here's why I don't like it: It's a "roguelike" that ignores the spirit of rogue for the sake of retarded design decisions.
1.You have endless stacking items. This results in a mess of overpower characters breezing through the game so hard that the dev made bosses with damage caps. Roguelikes have limited equip slots and limited inventory space.
2.You have feast/famine situations. Either you get lucky and get good items, or your get unlucky and get shit items. Roguelikes don't have explicitly good or shit items and there are plenty of drops.
There's more, but I didn't feel like going on about it.

Probably the best sandbox building game around, or at least close to it. If you liked Stormworks: Build and Rescue, definitely consider this game. Basically, you use ships, submarines, aircraft, and other shit you build by hand to fight a planetary war on an ocean world. There is a large campaign map, vehicles consume resources that must be mined by holding territory, and if you play on the truly hardcore mode, you need to actually ship those resources (fuel, ammo, scrap for repairs, etc.) to your fleets. It's also multiplayer in both build mode and campaign.
Vehicles need a power source (generally an engine you build by hand), defenses (armor, shields, active and passive counter-measures, etc.), detection systems (radar, ladar, etc.) and an AI (that can be adjusted via UIs, but also will take LUA scripts for specific commands or even general operation). This game will let you be as autistic as you want, but doesn't strictly require it to actually play the game, particularly because you can download other people's builds and use them in your game.
>>16392723
Can second this, it's a solid 4-player co-op FPS mining game. You're 4 dwarves mining an asteroid/planetoid(?) for Deep Rock Galactic. Sometimes your goal is to acquire a set amount of morkite (a mineral), other times you're recovering abandoned mining gear or other shit. Missions are dynamically generated and will see you moving in a roughly linear path with some serious verticality (managing this being a huge part of the game). Managing ammo, tools, and health is very important, as maps only have so much of the resources. Enemies are dangerous, heavily armoured, and can climb on any surface. Fighting well requires discipline and skill.

Jimmy and the pulsating mass was pretty good if your into games like OFF and lisa. The boss fights were fun with neat gimmicks, and the OST is top tier. The start of the game doesn't really do it justice though, give it a chance up until the end of the first island.

Try Slain!: Back from Hell. It's a hardcore, sidescrolling, somewhat souls-like action platformer passion project that has really really good art and music. When it originally launched, it had 9 million bugs, and the tiny dev team (it might have been one guy, actually) was put to shame. He spent the next year releasing free updates and bug fixes, and re-released the game bug-free and much improved with the "Back from Hell" subtitle, and gave every existing owner of the game an extra copy they could gift to people. 10/10 dev and great game.

Age of Decadence counts as an indie game I'd say, pretty small studio. One of my favorite games in a while. A big RPG with substantial content that you can't see all in just one or two playthroughs, and actually good stuff, not just a different outfit or some gay shit like that. Difficult turn based combat that rewards preparation, or just avoiding fights at all costs if you aren't playing a combat oriented character. For newcomers, the best advice is to specialize. Don't try to play a generalist character until you're very familiar with the game, or you'll most likely get fucked everywhere you go.

Nigger mass extinctions are usually staggered by 10s of millions of years, and furthermore most do not wipe out 99% of life, extinctions on that scale are usually caused by extreme global changes such as persistent, global volcanic activity, or something like the early oxygenation event that killed off obligate anaerobic bacteria. We rely on a shitload of different animals, particularly pollinators such as bees, and beyond utilities sake life on earth is (as far as we are currently aware) unique and irreplaceable. I think the (for lack of a better term) "military humor" gets it over the line. If it weren't for the nice visuals, lore and overall aesthetic of the game it would have bombed badly. I'm hoping Brigador Killers (current name of the next game) is an improvement in regards to gameplay, as I'll probably pass on it otherwise. Their setting and visual style are pretty damn great so if they can back that up with a fundamentally solid video game it'd be fucken great.

>your units miss endlessly and the enemies don't
I thought the same the first time I tried BB a few years ago, but I tried it again recently and got over it, here's a general noob's guide to not dying like a bitch:
- Early on the best weapons to use are Spears and Swords, which give an additive 20% and 10% hit bonus respectively, you ideally want a brother to have at least 70% chance to hit after their MATT and weapon accuracy bonus. You won't always have enough so only give axes, maces, etc to your best brothers (highest MATT) who have a decent chance to hit without accuracy bonuses.
- Do not use two-handed weapons early on with any brother worth keeping, their lower defense makes the AI prioritize them and they'll get minced. Only put 2Hs on disposable guys and even then put them in the backline and have them flank in later in the fight.
- Give all frontline brothers roundshields early in the game, the 15 ranged and melee defense keeps them alive.
- The surround bonus is another important source of accuracy, if an enemy is 2 tiles from your frontline, move as many brothers as you can next to them and wait, then have them all attack once the enemy is surrounded.
- Aim to make a beeline for good armor (>150 Durability) rather than gradually upgrading your entire companies armor. 210 Reinforced Mail in particular is a good target. Half decent armor makes keeping your guys alive and absorbing pressure the AI puts on you a lot easier.
- Don't be afraid to ditch shit recruits, start the game with High starting funds and be somewhat picky, ditch recruits with shit base rolls, poor stars, and negative traits unless you can't afford to. Also refer to the link at the bottom of this post and size up different backgrounds. Some good cheap ones for front-liners are Butchers, Brawlers, Farmhands and Thieves, there are plenty of other decent recruits, don't hire beggars and cripples just because they're cheap, their stats are shit. However a 30 gold beggar with a two-hander early on can be fun and pretty useful, they can be used a s a decoy and can potentially land some mean hits.
The early game is basically about getting as much mileage out of shitty brothers as you can while trying to keep brothers with good potential alive, later in the game once they're leveled up they have enough attack and defense to use 2Hs, hit reliably, wear good armor, etc.

Bonesaw is a freeware platformer that i'd rank next to SMW2:YI as far as platformers go, and environmental station alpha (ESA) is the best way to experience metroid one as an indie title. Also Not Another Needle Game (NANG), is an IWBTG game that has about no traps, and is all about the platforming, iterating on a concept for twenty floors at a time and then moving on. It has 100? floors, good luck!. IWBTG has a very strong engine for this sorta shit, and i recommend it.

>Your score is the cash you make.
But that doesn't reflect your performance whatsoever. Ignoring the modifiers, it represents how meticulously you've cleared every single map from props (not fun or natural), and including the modifiers the only way to get 'highscore' is to use max diff pilot with max diff cabin (not fun either), sure there are gradients between the best and what you could be bothered to run, but no matter the case it all boils down to being fucking bored out of your mind by doing extremely repetitive tasks most of which are not even challenging. And that's ignoring the extremely repetitive nature of the game itself - that's just the score systems incentive.
If time was a criterion, then baiting enemies and grinding the entire map with paper-thin armor harmless cab would naturally become not-viable at least to some extent (also depending on how the system set up).
If damage taken was a criterion (including the time incentive), then the system would actually incentivize using the most efficient cab equipment setup possible.
Then there are also combo and stylishness modifiers that could push player performance to the max.
Comparing that, knowing what could've been to what there is, just shows how fucking god awful what there is is.

Cryptark is good. It does also have a mode that is more traditional where you need to find pick-ups rather than using loadouts. >Old school fps style shooter. Weapon variety is a bit lacking but level design and gameplay are great
It really isn't very good. I played it and thought it was at least palatable for a modern attempt at a first person shooter, but I finally got around to playing The Forgotten/Arcane Dimensions and holy shit my ability to play singleplayer shooters has been ruined by it now. Dusk's major issue seems to be unreal engine with its six seconds of input lag and mouse smoothing out the wazoo. It just slows the fights down so much compared to quake. The other thing that slows the fights down is the weapon lineup which you noted but I don't think with enough detail, the mg is hitscan with friggen recoil bloom I don't know why, the fights too often seem to revolve around the !railgun, I don't get why or how the rational between the crossbow and riveter work, the riveter is a rocket launcher, I guess, but the crossbow is like a plasma gun with piercing instead of AOE?
In terms of the actual fighting gameplay, there's too many homing projectiles homing projectiles, I think the idea is you're meant to use the sickles to reflect them, but switch time + just plain flaky behavior makes that just fundamentally worse in every way than dodging behind some obstacles. The fights are too alpha heavy with damage being dished out and not much in the environment to top up so highest difficulty is a bit rockey with kinda bad pacing and punishes risky plays.
The environments are quite good and spooky and there are times where it is very unsettling, but that's kinda the only thing going for it.

>Gilda
I liked her because I never really used spells that much outside of Reina's doppleganger and having an entire character dedicated to spells gave me quite the appreciation for it.
Honestly my biggest flaws with the game are how on the later difficulties, the most notable changes are lower health/higher enemy damage, bosses spawn lots of mooks mid-fights which is absurdly infuriating, especially when they can freeze or burn you, and the fact that the goddess eyes always result in the same extra endings regardless of character.
And that you don't get to play Caderyn. It takes a pretty badass character to twist his original mission of "Find Goddess' daughter, infiltrate demon army" into "Infiltrate demon army, upstage everyone in said army, seduce strongest demon general and impregenate her, then have your resulting son who is a crossbreed between the strongest humanity and demonhood has got and have him meet the goddess' daughter and protect her.
As for cryptark, I just realized I was playing with the "Low Detail" option On. The difference between low detail and high detail is pretty staggering and the game looks pretty gorgeous now, especially considering they both play practically the same.
>>16438070
The problem with Dusk is in the enemy behavior, mainly the fact that they have to stop, wait for half a second before firing. It completely kills any pace or speed the game has going for it and it's pretty noticable.
As for the sickles, there is a default binding to automatically switch and melee attack, although it's still held down by some delay which makes it unwieldy.

NEO Scavenger is great, but SotS Rogueshit isn't.
To add my two cents, Star Traders Frontiers is quite good. It incorporates party combat similar to Darkest Dungeon, and actual Supply/Demand based on distance and availability and ship to ship combat that actually requires you to think if it's just worth to cut your losses and surrender, loosing all your cargo or even passengers.
Don't let the phone-like graphics fool you. Pirate it and give it a shot.

if anything there aren't enough of them, others would complain that the levels are so open that you can easily bhop circles around everything without ever getting hit because none of the enemies can lead their shots
>I think the idea is you're meant to use the sickles to reflect them
you can just outrun them by bhopping diagonally
or by standing behind some cover
or getting the projectiles to collide with other enemies
or killing the purple wizards before they can even fire
sickle reflect is just there for imaginary style points
>switch time
weapon switch time is Quake-style instant, note how you can cancel the unholster animations when your fire button is pressed the moment your crosshair switches styles to signify you have switched weapons
the only switch delays are imposed by weapon reload times such as with the hunting rifle because it behaves like a railgun in Quake does, but also notice how you can buffer weapon changes during reload times
>highest difficulty is a bit rockey with kinda bad pacing and punishes risky plays

>The problem with Dusk is in the enemy behavior, mainly the fact that they have to stop, wait for half a second before firing. It completely kills any pace or speed the game has going for it and it's pretty noticable.
I wouldn't say this is the biggest problem as every retro shooter short of Unreal and Descent did this (except for the melee enemies stopping before attacking which Quake didn't do), though its mindless adherence to retro shooter principles such as having enemies do that because Doom, Quake, Duke and Blood did it as well crippled some potential enemy variety
if you make all enemies move fast towards you, you often end up with situations like with Amid Evil where you can just nullify enemy placement by backpedaling down a hallway and forcing all enemies to run towards you in a bottleneck, whereas by making the enemies real slow it's you who has to push onwards to make progress at a reasonable rate

I regret buying it because the game never actually improved in any meaningful sense from the 'early access' release that was obviously completely unfinished and fucked up in terms of quality.
why are half the mutations literally shit and half conditionally useful-super-op?
why are melee weapons in the game if they don't one-tap popcorn enemies past a certain stage but also have no ammo cost?
why do melee weapons autoparry all enemy shots if you just spam them hard enough?

Two newish 2d souls inspired games:
> Unworthy (metroidvania elements) Made by a single polish guy in game maker studio it is a bit short and there is not much weapon variety, but I enjoyed it a lot
> Dark Devotion (rogue elements) You go down in a dungeon and can't go back, getting bonuses and curses for the run along the way, if you die you lose everything you carry except for some permanent unlocks. Some anon posted above that controlled didn't work for it, but I play with mouse and keyboard so that doesn't affect me

The biggest issue with Cross Code is the pacing. Spend 2-4 hours clearing boring trash. Spend 2-4 hours clearing puzzles. Kill a boss. Have some story. Rinse and repeat. The dual elemental temple is basically 6+ hours of puzzle with 5 minutes of fighting.

It's so difficult for me to find any 2d gameplay interesting.

About that.
Do you know some 2D indie games with fun combat? I get addicted for a couple of weeks to Risk of Rain every year, but I need something in the meantime.

Try
>Aztez: Procgen game with a little bit of DMC
>Rainblood Mirage(Pirate it because I'm pretty sure it's a chinese game): Basically discount Dante and Vergil in a 2D game. It's fun.
>Valdis Story Abyssal City: Four characters that you can spec into various ways, with four(or five in some cases) weapons that play fairly differently.
>Aces Wild: Someone described it as VTOL 2D brawler and I'd agree. It's a game where you can bounce enemies off walls and juggle them for days, launch them into other enemies, it's pretty fun. Long ago I had webms recorded of the game, but I no longer have them.

Darkwood.
Top-down survival horror with slav vibes.
During the day you explore, scavenge and look for a way to get out of the wood. During the night you hide in your safehouse and try to survive until morning.
You can always hear the danger comin;, no cheap jumpscares. The challenge is both in organising your defenses and dealing with situations as they develop.
If you look up anything about the game try to avoid spoiling enemy types for yourself, it's a lot of fun when you have to figure out how to deal with a new threat without being able to prepare for it.
Btw, for some fucking reason the game is low-res. Not even pixel art style. Just fucking low res. Consider also disabling post-processing to remove the blur-vignete. I don't know what they were thinking.

Gunpoint - Freelance espionage. Stealth, wall crawling, gadgets, snappy writing. The devs seem chill, too, from what you can hear from the commentary option. The jazzy/electric soundtrack is killer.
Deadbolt - You play as the Grim Reaper whose job it is to perform assassinations on those who have cheated Death (zombies, vampires, demons). Quick gunplay with some stealth elements. The writing is a touch artsy, but nothing overbearing. Gritty aesthetic.
Westerado: Double Barreled - Randomly generated Western whodunnit where you gather clues from questgivers to the identity of the man who yadda yadda Revenge. Decent music and it lovingly takes the piss out of spaghetti westerns.
