Is there anyone else that loves this game despite it's flaws? Despite its world being small I feel like it's incredibly fucking comfy due to it's size and style. There might be not much actual space but there is definitely a lot to do, and the Demon Doors are one of the coolest fucking mechanics I have seen in a video game. I remember entering the Hidden Library in the Guild for the first time, and feeling like I was in such an incredibly safe fucking place. I could just stay there and look at the environment without really leaving. Most of it, I admit is nostalgia talking, but despite the broken promises of Molyneux there is a lot that this game did right and had a lot of cool ideas.
I have never seen a game do the road from a literal no one to a hero better, the only complaint I have is the fact that it maybe happens too quickly if you do the side quests. But being a good-aligned hero, and seeing how people come across you and call you by your title, clapping you and then slowly falling in love with you if you are attractive enough, how the towns are suddenly filled with a bunch of fucking fangirls is a very satisfying experience. It feels great to see how women wet themselves at the mere sight of you, and how everyone who you meet greets you happily, calling you by your title, starting to thank you for your deeds. clap you when you walk by. Even the fact that your appearance changes to suit the image of a good-aligned or evil-aligned hero is absolutely great. And the locations behind the Demon Doors are always comfy and pretty with no music, which gives them such serene and pleasant feeling. Albion is my comfy place, and I absolutely love coming back to this game, despite the fact of how flawed it is.

So because the game takes place during a supposed industrial revolution, there's still heroes but the idea of the Guild and Heroes and whatnot has fallen to the wayside as these type of people become less common and less needed. Armor isn't a thing anymore, and as far as I remember clothing doesn't infer any bonuses or penalties - it's just whatever you want to wear. What still matters is weapons, though. And there's still Demon Doors.
It just got away from the traditional high-fantasy that Fable did so wonderfully at, but it's still decent. It's worth a play, at least.

I'll just list off what the other anon didn't mention. Money is mini game based, but you can do property ownership tricks to get around it rather easy. Spells have two options, either focus on one enemy or area effect. No mana bar iirc, you have a charge time before firing off spells. Makes it easier to cheese, but I actually prefer it to 1 in some ways since it can be more fun not to chug potions and experiment. Guns replace bows, you can do RE4 style aiming to hit certain limbs in combat, or just have it autoaim. The plot is more of the same with some retreads of the first games in terms of scenarios, expect there's an obnoxious author's pet character you never get to fuck over. Think of a recent Bioware character and you'll get the idea. A lot of people complain about the ending, but I think it's in line with what Fable is trying to do with morality. Without spoiling it, the end is about the cycle of revenge and overcoming what the villain could not. First game is still better, but I liked Fable 2 almost as much. I only got to play an hour of 3 so I can't say anything about that one, but you should try to play 2. A used 360 is about the price of a new game now.

It doesn't, absolutely everything changes from Fable 1 to 2. From combat, to the general feel and atmosphere. I think Fable 2 ruined the franchise, and Fable 3 nailed the coffin. Which is a shame, I expected Fable 2 to expand the mechanics of the first one, not to completely change them. There are a few stuff there from the first time, but only as concept, not as a mechanic coming back.

ahh fable, i had so many wonderful memories playing this game. i neevr knew about the hype behind this game so i wasnt let down like many others. i loved the concept of heroes and villains in a high fantasy set in europe. i loved the heroes guild, it was such a comfy area and its music just complimented the feeling of being awe by its world. thats something i havent felt in a while. albion had so much mystery behind it, especially scythe character.
i always imagined its sequel would end up being a prquel telling us the story of how the guildmaster took over the heroes guild. i loved how the heroes guild used to be just to make heroes but not villains. the guildmaster went against that idea, he wanted heroes to choose their morality. that had so much potential.
but instead we got fable 2. i was iffy when i heard the game took after 500 years. it still kept its high fantasy but there was something off about it. i really enjoyed it though. i loved exploring the world and seeing how some places looked after 500 years. there was so much mystery such the fall of oakvale. the whole thing about people revolting against the heroes guild and killing most heroes had a lot of promise. it made me think that they would somehow re instate the heroes guild somehow and start over in the future but instead we got fable 3
i dont even want to talk about fable 3. god damn that shit was so awful.

I heard Fable is one of those games that really lets you have fun doing an "evil" play-through. I kind of want to play a game where I can be legitimately evil, not an edgelord like in Mass Effect, and not a cartoon villain like in Overlord or Dungeon Keeper.
How is Fable from that perspective? All I've heard about it is that you can eventually grow little horns.

I think the only game I've found that does an evil playthrough legitimately well is KOTOR 2. Still, there's something fun about going around, scaring little kids and laughing at them as they run away scared from you. Fable really took the theatricality of being a hero or a villain and just completely running with it. God, Fable 1 was so fucking good.

>can anyone tell me if Fable II was any good in comparison to the first one?
Fable 2 could've easily been the best game in the series but the developers royally screwed it up. A lot of the problems the game had were completely fixable.
The Good
>Game has no fixed cutscenes. Story segments don't remove control from the player. Outside of the intro cutscene.
>Geometry isn't full of invisible walls the player can jump over shit
>Player customization allows you to play as a woman
>Good/evil alters your customization in a more exaggerated way
>Player can change the color of their clothing by purchasing dyes
>The game completely lacks armor. Instead you can purchase clothes ranging from simple to Renaissance style ones
>Game has firearms and crossbows
>Combat is surprisingly fluid and enjoyable. However has major flaws described about in The Bad
>The game has really nice art direction with a lot of really nice looking locations and enemies. Bowerstone especially looks really nice
>The preorder dlc for Fable 2 was released to all players in 2014. Was completely unexpected. It was really nice for Microsoft to do that
>The player's dog is probably the greatest implementation of a pet that follows you around. The dog would attack enemies in such a way that they'd be stunned so you could finish them off. He was really well animated and actually conformed to terrain. So he didn't just float off the ground like in Bethesda games. He also had other functions outside of combat. Like he'd point out locations where buried treasure was. You could also play fetch with him. The Dog's appearance would also change based on the morality system. There was also a DLC where you could change his breed
>Some of the side missions were pretty good
>The Bad
>The game's story starts off promising but becomes absolute garbage as it goes on. The villain is extremely generic and the plot is entirely centered on you locating a few incredibly unlikeable "heroes" who you need to defeat the villain
>These heroes don't actually do anything to help you defeat the villain they just appear in the final cutscene to power up a music box you use that defeats the villain
>Most of the player's weapons and abilities feel very similar to each other. Like firearms/crossbows feel very similar and all of the melee weapons feel the same. In Fable 1 one of the funnest things to do was a "challenge run". Where you'd try to beat the game using an elaborate challenge. Like stick only/naked only/bow only/magic only/no resurrection/no potion. It made the game actually challenging and really fun. These sorts of runthroughs aren't possible in Fable 2.
>The story has no memorable moments. Fable 1 was full of memorable moments like Twinblade, The Arena, all of the Northern Wastes, Darkwood etc. I remembered the entire story to Fable 1 a decade after I played it. I forgot all of Fable 2 a week after I played it. I still don't remember any of the character's names.
e5043d No.16409191
The Ugly
>Combat is completely broken due to two factors. Magic and dying. Magic is VASTLY overpowered and all of your magic spells are the same. They all have a projectile and an AOE effect. But the vast majority of the time spamming projectiles does its job. This is in sharp contrast to Fable 1 where the player had tons of spells and a lot of them were pretty fun to use. Like the one where you teleport behind enemies.
>It's impossible for the player to die. When the player loses all of his HP, he falls down and the game says you lost XP and you get back up. This was because at the time Molyneux stated that "Game over is a failure on the dev's part" and stated that the player should always be able to continue. This really makes the combat feel boring and like the story has less weight than the already piss poor attempt at one.
>The game does not reward you for doing quests. You might get a new item or XP but this feels pointless because again no dying. The only way to make money is to work a job where you do a timing based minigame. This feels EXTREMELY repetitive and if you wanna buy everything you have to spend a lot of time doing this. This isn't as bad though because like Fable 1 you can exploit the property mechanic to get millions of gold right from the start. But it genuinely makes the game far worse than it needs to be. I have zero idea why Lionhead thought this was a good idea.
>The game is HEAVILY implying there will be a big final confrontation with the game's villain at the end. It even shows you his lair at the start. And right when you're about to fight him there's this big buildup where you walk up this ominous staircase to his lair. And the player defeats the villain in a cutscene. It was something journos even thought in reviews was retarded. This is balls compared to Fable 1 which had a really good Jack of Blades fight for the Xbox version and an even better fight against the Dragon in The Lost Chapters.
>The game has 3 endings. 1. you get to save a bunch of nameless NPCs you never see. 2. You get to resurrect your dog. 3. You get a million gold. The only ending that's worth doing is resurrecting your dog because you can exploit the property mechanic to get millions anyway.
>No PC version because Microsoft were trying to force PC players to transition to the 360. Which worked to a certain extent. This was also why Halo 3 lacked a PC version. It's unlikely we will ever see a Fable 2 PC version because of how none of the games were successful after Fable 2. And Lionhead was closed down years ago.

Fable 3 is available on PC
You can see Bowerstone from the small island community and it looks majestic
These are the only positives found in Fable 3
Fable 3 is this strange monstrosity that fails to understand fable and exists more as this ultra idealized rejection of video game standards, except it only rejects the elements in video games that are generally done well, it doesn't emphasize the existence of menus and instead you perform actions like changing clothes and weapons and magic within the world space itself, except all this does is move a few button presses into teleporting to your personal sanctum moving between rooms and then selecting a phyiscal representation of a menu. The whole setup sort of fails to have any real goals since it turns a simple task into a more time consuming one that still ends up using menus anyway.
The story in Fable 3 is complete shit, it alludes that Fable 2 was building up to this only it has the single worst antagonist in any of the Fable games, who is somehow even worse than retconned Jack of Blades in Fable TLC, they have no relevance to the series core narrative, and are the most generic villain found within the entire series, they add nothing to the world building or core narrative, they are completely pointless, they are superfluous.
The series core narrative has always been about heroes, but Fable never handled this properly, it's main explanation for where heroes comes from is that scythe the first hero was able to draw magical energy from somewhere and it made him a hero, and then he passed on this heroic power through is bloodline. I often see parallels between Fable and Discworld, especially in it's writing, but Fable completely fails to hold a thread of logic like Discworld does, where the whole narrative feeds into itself, and some elements don't need explaining because they are self evident due to the thread of logic. Take Going postal for example, it's a story about a conman being forced to run the failing post office, and because he's a con artist he thinks up a con where he would sell people pre printed postal stamps as a con to make money, only it works, and the story mentions all kinds of stupid things related to this, like because people don't collect stamps they collect pins, and because one of the postal staff collects pins and keeps them in wax paper he accidentally discovers that the perforations in his wax paper make it easy to tear accurately, and it decreases the time needed to make stamps which basically saves stamp production. Anyway the whole point is that everything follows this strange thread of logic, which is where fable fails narrative wise. Scythe being able to draw magic is really unrelated to what makes a hero a hero, and it comes off as pointless lore wank, because they needed some kind of explanation for where heroes originated, it would have been best left up to player speculation.
Back to Fable 3 the post revolution story line involves the player making decisions that balance creating wealth to save your kingdom, or fulfilling the promises you are forced to make in order to take the throne, yet again to follow Fable you generally have to choose between cartoonishly evil or naively good, or abstain but at the same time every decision you make impacts your treasury, only problem with this is that it's stupidly easy to make all the good decisions and make mountains of cash entirely through real estate, which isn't even a hidden exploit.

As for Fable 2, I was addicted to it during my junior year of college. It was just felt so much fun for me despite my preference towards Fable 1's magic system.
Fable 3 was also fun but not as addicting. I thought some of the royal choices were a bit too restricting. Also, I did like the idea of turning an orphanage into a whorehouse.

The main theme for Fable Legends is actually pretty good, and very Fable like, it's a shame that that game was cancelled, because it featured a better combat system than all other Fable games, although one that doesn't evolve what already existed in Fable games, and visually it was on point for Fable. It was also completed but then Microsoft closed the game. I think the thing I wanted to see most from it was Lionhead using what they had learned with Legends to make Fable 4, even if it meant reusing the engine and assets.

Combat is actually pretty fun, you can easily become overpowered and abuse the fuck out of the charge attacks with high speed weapons like katanas and pistols. Feels good chaining together multiple attacks like that, not sure of it's actual depth tho. Magic is also good, not just generic buffs you can get summon swords and shit really easily. Also best doggo is a constant companion and he can pretty much handle CC in any area by himself if you're at least decent at DPS.

i thought the whole larping as a king deal in fable 3 was kinda fun….at first. then you realize that all your choices are extremely shallow and only have aesthetic (if any) effect on the world
my almonds really activated at the part where you get to choose the interior decoration for your newly acquired castle albion, and the decorators and architects that present themselves are:
A) a goody two shoes artiste lady who loves puppies
B) the former architect and conservative advisor to the king
C) a crazy madman who says you should instill fear into the populace
I thought, "oh wow cool, you get to choose between keeping the castle the same as it was, or choosing the fortress of friendship, or choosing the black dungeon, right?"
thoughts raced through my head of having a cool sanctuary with statues of angels and hooded monks, between a dimly lit, spiky castle with gibbets hanging everywhere
instead it changes the color of the carpets to either blue, purple or red.
the choices are all hype, with no substance. much like the games in the end sadly. honestly i thought it was kinda cool having fable 2-3 set in the industrial era, but they didnt execute it very well in the end. first one was still the best game because at least theres shit to do in it, and the moral choices at least give the illusion of having an impact….sort of.

So you aren't allowed to go from an iron sword to the best legendary weapon. You have to buy all of the weapons inbetween.
And I like playing as Spellsword in video games, so I would prevent myself from ever using any ranged weapon and maybe only level up my strenght/health/toughness to half of the maximum.

I really love Fable for many of the reasons already mentioned, but one I especially like was the tone. Most western fantasy games tend to fall on either extremely serious and usually grimdark or """"""parody"""""" games full of reddit tier humor where they take nothing seriously. Fable I thought did a good job making a lighthearted fantasy setting with a nice balance of both goofy humor and serious moments where it rarely felt like they were at odds with each other unless you were deliberately making your title Chicken Chaser or Arseface and doing all the quests naked or something.
I wish it had some kind of spiritual sequel, not like the actual sequels it got.

I also enjoyed how there was a passage of time throughout all the games, something that you don't usually see in fantasy as technology seems to stagnate in this genre.

Even Fable III despite it's godawful ending, but I didn't get it right away, so all the rage about the ending was pretty well known and I was able to plan accordingly and avoid having the game back me into a corner.
Not particularly interested in the series continuing if it's never going to rise above the mediocrity, but I'm worried that if they resurrect the IP with a new team - it's going to lose what little saving grace it had with it's charm. Any new games are going to end up being the Halo 4/5 of the series, having all the right ingredients and a bunch that are unnecessary and unwanted, but never quite coming together because the new team doesn't understand what worked about the originals - what could be changed, what needed to be changed, and what needed to be left the fuck alone. Basic cargo cult game design.

No, Fable 2 and 3 were pretty shitty. The original was mediocre with some neat ideas, and while it is purely cosmetic, I really like the idea of your character's appearance changing as their stats grow and according to their statistical growth. It is one of those cases where it is a perfectly logical thing to do, makes a lot of sense, and yet is not seen often because it is a lot of work for what is essentially fluff.

Does anyone know of any good fable mods?

Anon, they can't even do mirrors anymore. You think they are able to do something like your character changing in build, age, height, alignment and magic? All that in addition to countless haircuts, beards and tattoos?
We have to have 4k graphics, dynamics shadows, ambient occlusion, etc. There is nothing left for stable 60 FPS and working mirrors.

Wait can you do the dupe villagers at boasting platform trick to access those "locked" quests at the start? Like the Frost Troll one you can never get enough renown for?

Nah. I once grinded enough renown to get these missions as a kid and I couldn't pick them.
It's just flavour

>Big tits
Your tits never actually changed size. You just became a potato shaped lard ass. You had to stay at 0 fatness and 0 physique to not look like a fucking man.
Though boob scaling potions would have fit right in with the body changing potions they added in the DLC, plus the whole "stupid steampunk products" jokes of Fable 3
The Bountiful Bust Potion - a favorite of Bloodstone prostitutes for it's ability to greatly enhance the market value of their business assets.
Lolita's Delight - A refined potion for women wishing to relive their pre-pubescent years, be more convincing when disguised as a man, or to simply sleep on their stomach without squishing their love pillows.
Blousebuster Deluxe - Become the envy of women the world over with the button popping, back straining effects of this particular breast ballooning potion. Warning: Blousebuster is not responsible for damage to clothing, property, spines or fighting ability as a result of using this product.

I fell in love with the game ever since I remember reading about it as Project EGO in game informer. Molyneux really was a hype master back then. I wasn't cynical, so when I got the game it still felt pretty amazing. I beat the game at least 12 times, doing all kinds of different stuff during each play through. Fable lost chapters was great as well, despite a few things that bothered me about it. The biggest issue I had was that they changed Jack of Blades voice from a slimy sneak to some generic demonic voice through minor sound editing. I would have been fine if they used the demonic voice only for his dragon form.
Recently, I got to try the anniversary version and the game still holds up. I'm still getting tons of playtime out of this game by now doing glitch runs to see what exploits let me do what. I cant believe after all these years and its true that you can get into bowerstone north as well as get the Sword of aeons before even fighting the wasp queen. I feel like an idiot for not knowing the trader exploits for free gold after all these years and instead would abuse selling a house with my trophies in them. Truly a timeless classic and I dont regret owning every version of Fable 1. While I enjoyed fable 2, it lost a lot of the charm 1 had. I couldn't play more than 10 minutes of Fable 3.

A shame this game never got a widespread modding community.
