As anon above, I've craved to build a JA/7.62 HC clone where one can keep an inventory of spare bits and pieces of guns and whatnot. There would be an option to hire an armorer who would maintain your stocks, breaking down worn guns and replacing bits as needed as your fighters report problems or come in for r&r. He'd occasionally ask you for cash to buy up new stuff if things are dire, or would push for upgrades if you've got capacity.
Otherwise, the game would have an ability to explode a gun and allow you to inspect and replace parts down to the screw-and-pin level (should you want).
Notched crowns and worn barrels would result in markedly poor accuracy at range, broken pins might have parts fall off the gun (externally, or worse, internally). Worn springs might cause jams or feed failures. Dirt too. Barrels might bulge if they get dirty, and burst barrels might explode.
But wear has advantages, too. A trigger sear fresh off the mill might be rough would make for noticeably worse handling, heavier trigger pull, etc. A more worn one would reset smoother, perhaps allowing for faster recycling.
It would make defining weapons a nightmare because you'd need to sit there and write in dorf fort levels of components.

I'm tired of all guns being zeroed at 100 yards or meters. It's bullshit that completely ignores a very basic firearm design tenet.

Then there are shotguns, I get that you can't make them realistic in modern games because modern games have engagement ranges that are too short. Due to this, shotguns have to be nerfed otherwise you'd be counter sniping people with a pump action shotgun. The only game I've played that was recently made, that made shotguns at least proportionally realistic (IE they are still have the same range as at least the SMGs) was Division 2. If you multiplied the effective ranges of all of the guns in Division 2 by about 3-4 times you'd get a reasonable approximation of the effective range IRL. The ranges with this multiplier would be; pistols are good to 40 or so meters, SMGs and shotguns are good to 80-100 meters, assault rifles are good to 250-280 meters, battle rifles are good to 300-340, and marksmen rifles at 400-440 meters. There are exceptions and outliers in the game but it does a better job at balancing the weapon types than most recent games. The lack of slugs and chokes in the game does leave me wanting though.

Why not giving enemies a limited amount of ammo that they can waste? The better you finish one, the more ammo you should get. You could also trick them to waste their entire ammo, forcing them to go melee, use a different weapon or something else, but you'd get no ammo back.
Heck, why not making they behave depending on what's in their inventory while also trying to save ammo (or not, and then base shit depending on their personality, but that's going way too deep)

There are possibilities, but balancing it is difficult, but it could add some depth to combat.
To illustrate, originally the grunts in Black Mesa had limited ammo for their SMGs and would switch to their pistol once they ran out, but what ended up happening during playtesting is that the player would just wait behind cover and make them waste their rounds before easily picking them off.
One of the questionable choices off the devs if you ask me, if done right it could have improved the lackluster combat somewhat, but the aimbot coding for the grunts is total dogshit anyway so whatever.

I think it would be pretty cool if the AI became more cautious with its shots after the first few mags. Let's say you're hiding behind cover, the enemy unloads their first mag on your cover to keep you suppressed. Then they take potshots with their second mag. After that they sit there and wait for you to do something, maybe shout some generic NPC shit like "come out and fight", "you can't hide there forever" and whatnot.
If you wanted it to be really realistic, then when they're almost out of ammo they could pull out of the fight and run to an armoury to restock, or even someone nearby could throw them a mag. But honestly it would be realistic enough if they were just programmed to not constantly unload their mags on your cover.

And once out of ammo if they're the "panicky" kind of enemy they'd try to run away after a time and if not, like having "brave" flag or something they'd try to come at you with a melee weapon running from cover to cover and/or checking flags to see if any of their team-mates are still alive with bullets and.. sending a signal to get them to do "suppressive fire" so they can do said cover to cover or flanking via melee weapon or something like that.

Only constantly firing one after the other, but even in video games you don't do that. Even then, 9mm and 22lr guns show no notable degradation beyond getting dirty after several thousand rounds in rapid succession. Only part failure on a cheap-ass AR is the gas tube (which is easily replaced). It's only when you get into full-power cartridges and early barrel metalurgy that this becomes an issue.

I dislike the red jelly screen to indicate being injured, although I think the color going to grayscale or perhaps giving you a sort of tunnel-vision would be fine. Better than having your character moan or something to show he's been shot. I think you do need some sort of indication though, because the other option is a gay "health bar" type thing which is dumb.

Given them a reasonable amount of ammo, 200 rounds or so and when they run out they retreat or switch to a sidearm. You could also prevent the player from scavenging ammo off dead soldiers, because no one would do that IRL. Rounds could be sabotaged intentionally or shitty quality/corrosive that degrade your gun. Even if you do have 2 sides fighting that share a common caliber (which is not common, as far as I know), I doubt commanding officers would let their soldiers loot dead bodies for more ammo. And I doubt most soldiers want to dig through a dead guy's webbing for shit.

Boy have I got some PTSD flashbacks to share with you. How autistic is the physics on the guns? You can stabilize your gun by shoving it through the slots in a fence, and the gun actually reacts to that both in your hands and in terms of what other players see.
The gun is an actual physical object simulated both in the world and in your hands, it has an objective size and it interact with the environment the same way you do. It even takes things like sight-offset into account(this goes more for RS2), so you can forget what you're doing, aim at a guy with a scoped rifle and kick up a clod of dirt in front of you because you were being a stupid nigger.
They also have flamethrowers, and the flames are physics based volumetric effects so they'll bounce off of walls and obstructions, stick to surfaces and generally act like real napalm. Often the best way to clear out a Viet tunnel or Jap bunker is to chuck a couple of grenades in there and get the engineer to dump some napalm inside.
The RO2/RS2 series is fucking glorious and you can't believe how happy I am that it's not more popular because every time we get a sale and a bunch of normalfags pile on I want to kill myself.
With that said, the nature of the games and community tend to drive those people away pretty quick which is fantastic for us since they keep our games alive with their money and then fuck off.

I don't mind there being busted guns in games, however it's bullshit when it works perfectly for the enemy but as soon as you get your grubby hands on one it's jam city. There's an addon for Anomaly that handled this perfectly: NPC gear and it's drop condition was tied to their in-game rank, so a quick edit of the script also tied jam chance to NPC rank. Rookie bandits and their shit-tier rusty Kalashnikovs and Makarovs firing old ammo will jam on them constantly, while a master-rank exoskeleton-clad Merc carrying a new SCAR-H isn't having any of that bullshit. Anyway, this is getting away from video games a bit. I kinda see the logic in having enemies drop only a few rounds, because the designers don't want the MC swimming in ammo like he's Rambo and can gun down everyone he sees. It doesn't really make sense logically, but I get it.
But how do you "fix" it? Have enemies drop more ammo? Then the game gets much easier because that's no longer a variable the player has to worry about. Of course it all depends on the game. An arcadey/action shooter, meh, it's about shooting bad dudes, so making the player conserve ammo feels lame. A stealth game or one where you are up against more enemies than you could reasonably kill? I think in that situation you have to have a trade-off. You go in with some silenced gun and limited ammo. You could loot the enemy's guns and ammo, but then you have to use their equipment which might not be ideal for the situation.
I don't think this is a huge deal nowadays, devs are getting better with how they handle guns.

I just see it as more of a way of enforcing the idea that enemy guns are less trustworthy and dependable than your own, rather than an actual reflecting how maintained your enemy's guns are. In real life you'd much rather stick to your own rifle than pick a dead man's AK off the ground, because you don't know what he's done to it, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't pick it up if you had no other options.
Like I said, there's probably better and more subtle ways to get that point across than having enemy's guns magically fill with rust when you grab one off the ground, but it does its job of encouraging you to improvise with the loadout you got from an arms dealer and it feels thematically appropriate given the african bush setting.

The fact that "realism" is requested without caring about game design.
"Realism" in vydia works to make a lot of gameplay mechanics more intuitive by basing them around common sense and your own expectations from IRL. You can cram far more details without needing extra tutorials or tooltip boxes when it's something that just makes sense and you understand right away.
What "Realism" doesn't do very well however is making for a varied amount of gameplay options since Reality has a tendency to Occam's Razor the shit out of 80% of everything, limiting what actually works in a videogame if that's what you're going for.
Take for instance the "shotguns do no damage past 5 meters" complaint. Of course that's not realistic at all and doesn't make much sense, but that's because you're expecting realistic weapons instead of understanding their purpose in the game.
Shotguns are slow-fire, high-damage, short-range.
Snipers are slow-fire, high-damage, long-range.
Assault Rifles are rapid-fire, low-damage, long-range.
Sub-machineguns are rapid-fire, low-damage, short-range.
Etc, etc. The characteristics of a weapon are greatly exaggerated to put them in a specific niche without overlapping other weapons. These characteristics are still based on "realism" (shotguns have a shorter range than assault rifles that have a shorter range than sniper rifles) but it's never going to be up to scale since most multiplayer games feature mid\short range maps for combat where snipers would see any practical use if shotguns and ARs were just as powerful, etc.
It's the same thing for stuff like hunger mechanics or crafting, where the overall idea and components is based around "realism" so you quickly understand it all, but it's never 100% realistic so it's not too cumbersome or limited.

Missing shots is a mistake, and revolvers, especially the 5 shot ones that are often used for concealed carry, have much lower magazine capacity than most semi automatics. Semi automatics leave more room for error if you miss, or if you're being attacked by more than one person. Chimps hunt in packs, arisen, and adrenaline is a hell of a drug. Even trained and experienced soldiers can make mistakes when the adrenaline's pumping; it isn't unlikely that an inexperienced civilian will miss some of their shots. But either way, the most important thing isn't the gun, but the user and their training. Even the world's best gun is next to useless in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it, and for self defense, every missed shot is a shot that's hitting something you don't want to hit, most likely in an urban and populated area. That's massively increasing the risk of collateral damage. So regardless of whatever kind of gun someone's using for self defense, I'd recommend that they invest in a lot of ammo and time on the range, and work on their marksmanship with the gun they're using, because that will matter more than whether they're using a revolver or a semi auto.

I have a comfy arcade freetoplay kusoge I return to every few months that inspires these feelings more than any other first person shooter I've played in recent memory. Many melee combat engagements resolve to a race to pick up dropped guns from dead men or desperate sidearm magdumps. You can clear entire teams of sloppy camping enemies by grabbing one of their submachineguns and shooting as many men in the back as you can before they realize the gunfire is from a hostile, grabbing any other submachinegun from men you kill in place of reloading.
Active looting and dropping exhausted automatics after you've used them is incomprehensibly fun, and I don't understand why developers don't let you do it anymore.

If you wanted to make a melancholy and unfair fps, you could even give light weapon users a brief after-death period where they could keep holding down the trigger on a machine pistol as their body fails to let them get a full kill on a shotgun user to guarantee a draw between players of equal reflexes in a face to face fight.
Standard FPS weapon categories explicitly exist to reduce the minimum level of skill required to get certain kinds of cheesy kills so that players with more damaged reflexes, worse controllers, worse tv sets, and physical disabilities can sometimes get a shotgun ambush ohko or carefully preaimed 'sniper rifle quickscope' despite the objective powerlevel deficiencies of those weapons in the rule systems.

Hard armor being treated like a health bar or damage % reduction. This irritates me even more when hard armor is treated as regenerating shields or health.
Objects can either penetrate, glance and damage the armor, or glance entirely. A game that does this pretty effectively is War Thunder, but with modern computer hardware capability I feel like this should be more common.

This is probably more difficult to implement than it sounds. To be incredibly accurate and 'lifelike', only the connected shots which are closer to a 90 degree angle on hit should do any considerable damage, and in order to do such a thing effectively, the model hitboxes need to be form-fitting, and that's not always an option, especially since hitboxes in any shape other than boxes or ellipses are very taxing.

I loved how in SOCOM US Navy SEALs Combined Assault (only SOCOM game I played), the game kept track of how many bullets were in each magazine. When you switched magazines, the bullet in the chamber is added and you did not always get a full loaded weapon as a result.
Also, Goldeneye for N64 started players off with one in the chamber and a fully loaded magazine. It was the first FPS I played that featured a reload mechanic.

That shit in TESIV and some other RPG's where certain effects of magic- how fatigue and magic is used by NPCs doesn't mean shit- because spells have little reference for enemy scaling in difficulty- where NPCs never run out of Fatigue and/our magic/specials and use them at random and in no predictable frame or form of stratedgy to the point where combat is an univolved process that only has player agency in mind.
A good example of this is the kind of things you get when you'd install mods for TESIV where fatigue actualy counts/becomes Dark souls-ish and all of a sudden the 9999 poison fatigue potions actually have an extremely viable use- and NPCs pace themselves because of limitations in place- or mind-affecting attacks actually affecting the player for example.
It's hard to describe entirely- but basically- the devs introduce an effect that only the player will use- will never have used against him, will never have combat someone who uses it because of the effect being something that can only be simulated from one person perspective. In bethesda's case- much of the magic system had entire schools which did this- a player isn't ever going to encounter an illusionist who fucks with them, or be placed under mind-control- the AI functions and handling for it weren't ever made.
In final fantasy- it's the shittons upon shitttons of monsters who don't use their special abilities- something which I praise the hardtype ROM Hack for adressing- Enemies had such a scale of depth to them that the mage is rendered a support class because it's more viable to run away in certain battles- there is clear evidence of advantages/disadvantages that hilight the mortality of a party and PC world placement.

they are not physical objects, i dont think many or even any games do that kind of thing, RO uses the same floaty arms for your first person view and has different animations + behaviour for your world model, so they are not physical objects at all more of an indicator of what you are carrying, they cant get stuck in holes or hit off level geometry, instead it does that thing where if you move too close to something your character just raises his rifle, the game works just like every other FPS out there with the only thing setting it apart is that free cone of aim your weapon has, unlike most FPS games were moving your gun slightly moves the entire screen so that the gun is always aiming in the center.
