If you go in not expecting 2005 era jank then you're just going to be pissed off that people hyped it. It looks like shit, and has extremely (EXTREMELY) clunky elements, however it has dozens and dozens of other aspects that have been either never been done in other games or lost to time.
As an example, when you log out, make sure you log out in a 'day-job' zone, in addition to your standard rest bonus you'll get specialized bonuses based on which area you logged out in.
Think of it as a gigantic as fuck old school wooden playground that spans like an acre of land, the kind of shit that was fun because you and your friends played a game of tag you're shocked didn't result in a broken arm. It isn't some plastic 4 story tall fun-u-tanment center with mounted i-pads and other shit, that's ultimately just a big tube, 3 or 4 slides connected to the same ball pit.

The gear system doesn't work like that at all.
Basically you build your character and costume through a very solid character creation system for its time. You pick an archtype (class) origin (decides what you can equip but is mostly flavour) and two power pools (That decide what your skills are). As you level you unlock more powers from your pool, and you also unlock other utility pools which contain extra skills that all classes can learn.
Gear is in the form of enhancements, you attach them to skills to make them better. They're stuff like damage increases, cooldown reductions and endurance reductions. Stuff like that. The stronger ones tend to be locked to particular origins, like a magic origin character can't use tech or science origin enhancements or whatever.
There's 3 alignments, Good, evil, and neutral and each has its own zone. Good gets Paragon city, Evil gets Rogue islands and Neutral gets an alternate dimension. It's possible to start off in one zone and go to other zones as the game progresses. Good and evil zones have 5 regular archtypes each. The more experimental hybrid ones are in the evil zones though. The game follows a simple Tank/DPS/Healer/Control style system. PVP is in the form of arena combat, or open PVP in the 3 PVP zones. In these zones heroes fight against villains. There's also Bank robberies and some other stuff that pits players against each other too.

Oh there's raids, They're called task forces, with the Hamidon raid being the penultimate one. I remember Hamidon raids being talked about for years so I don't think they pushed it beyond that like they did with WoW. There's content you can also do at any level, like Holiday events and Riktus invasions. These ones scale to the player undergoing it, and they crop up every so often. Other content like this are the Giant Monsters, who are also levelless but need a big team of heroes/villains to defeat.

Clans take on the form of Super Groups which are honestly far better than regular clans. When you make a super group you can assign costume colors and a symbol so that when you all get together your colors all match and you're wearing the groups symbol. CoH/CoV works best when you make multiple characters. The different archetypes play very differently and certain power sets without the archetypes also vary a lot (fire vs stone defense). For those I say "some", because there are always a few generic ones that are interchangeable.
They introduced an "endgame" near the time they shut down and it was terrible. The problem is that it was entirely raid driven and the forced huge groups worked against what the game did best (group scalability - you could play the same missing solo or with 8 and it was fun for all of those).
But basicaly it is a standard early MMO, but does not force grouping, makes forming groups easy, has "loot" but isn't loot focused, is heavily instanced with the overworld map having little content, and encourages making a variety of characters and replaying content. Especially if this server doesn't just give out the loyalty rewards in the game, there are certain areas that you will see repeatedly and will have trouble skipping over (that's coming from someone who played from pre-order beta until the end.)

It was pretty much the most anti-pvp game ever to exist. Other than the PvP zones (and a couple of non-combat social zones), heroes and villains were not allowed in the same areas - and that's not being blocked by guards or anything, that is flat out not being able to go in them at all.
The PvP zones were ghost towns, because PvP is shit in the game. As a super game, it was built around things like being able to freeze and immobilize dozens of enemies for extended periods of time and being able to dodge 95% of attacks directed at you. Neither of those things is fun in PvP.
Characters effective at PvP were limited to the few that were able to do burst damage hit and run, while the rest of the game had long battles with 2 dozen enemies. This meant that the characters that were effective in one were often crap in the other. It was possible to have multiple builds that were good at each, but that was still limited to a few archetypes. An Emp Defender was never going to be a good PvPer and many Stalkers struggled in much of the PvE game - at least compared to Scrappers and Brutes who were one many armies.

The endgame raiding is kinda shit, but you can't really get left behind as it only has 1 level. Maybe 1.5. The endgame has a new currency to buy powers, but everyone earns that currency doing the same missions. i'd go even further than that. In many MMOs the only thing you can effectively do solo is crafting, but with CoH, you could get on and play solo. Then if you saw someone who wanted to group, you thought nothing of joining, since missions were fairly quick, and could be shared 99% of the time, so you would get full loot rewards (and even when you couldn't, the majority of rewards didn't depend on having the mission anyway).
Then, if you needed to quit for something, the next mission would be scaled down to the size of the new group. This meant that you got a much larger number of adults playing. May times I would have someone say they had time for 1 mission before they had to pick their kids up from school. Call it ageist if you want, but a community with more 30+ year-olds is a better one that one made up entirely of people with no responsibilities.
So, it wasn't just chance that gave CoH a good community, there were actual features of the game that attracted a better community.

Neutraility sucked. The transition missions were pretty damned good, but there was no real benefit to sitting in the middle. In fact, you could repeat hero/villain/neutral missions daily for some pretty nice rewards, but the neutral rewards were crappier. They overvalued the ability to do missions on both sides. That really wasn't very important. There was way too much content in the game for that to matter. The only time it ever mattered is when I switched my hero defender over and back because the hero powers for defenders didn't have a bash/lethal/energy defense option like they did on the villain side.

That sounds like you are in paragon chat and not a real game server. Paragon Chat has been running several years, and we've been able to make characters and move around. But most interactions don't work. The characters in Paragon Chat have multiple travel powers (both teleport and flight and superjump) even though you don't get those at first level, but their attack powers are greyed out and cannot be placed in to tool bar. It also allows you to teleport between zones freely instead of needing to go to zone borders.
If you see multiple travel powers, you're in the wrong game.

This is the most simple instructions I could write for the moment. If I missed anything, let me know.
1) Log into https://score.savecoh.com/index.php/
2) Register an account there.
3) Login using the Login button on the menu bar between Search and Register.
4) Click on the Game Account link just under General Category.
5) Scroll to the bottom and create a Game Account Name and Password.
6) Go to http://patch.savecoh.com/tequila.exe and download Tequila.
7) Run Tequila.exe. Make sure SCORE is selected in Tequila. Create the folder you want to place the game into. NOTE: The download may take a while; please be patient. (Even if you have Paragon Chat loaded, still run this step.)
8) Select Play (again, make certain SCORE is selected) and things should move on from there.

In CoH you're stopping bank robberies while in CoV you're committing them, so basically just a difference in flavor text and the color of dudes you shoot Longbow are still hella gay, be them ally or victim.
For villians there's minor differences in power-sets, which tend towards high-damage. better debuffs, or pets (thugs count as pets), while heroes tend towards, high defense, ranged attacks, and better heals/buffs there's far less hand-holding (since players are assumed to have played CoH first) and the starting areas are more of a pain-in-the-ass to get around without travel powers, also EVERYTHING will try to kill you on the Mercy Islands versus, only half of everything are trying to kill you and the innocent civilian mobs in Paragon.
