>What happened
An anonymous disgruntled dev for CoH leaked the code to Leandro who was a prominent member of the community. He was a scared little bitch and hid the code away out of fear. He's had a tiny server running in secret since 2013. Just a few days ago DestroyerStroyer dropped a youtube video laying out damning evidence of the server's existence and the entire internet got monumentally assblasted. We threatened him until he dumped the code to the net. It is now safely distributed across the internet where NCSoft could never hunt it all down. Leandro later was moved by the massive rush of people that made more progress in 5 minutes than he did in weeks and apologized for what he did and expressed regret that someone didn't snap him out of it sooner.

A crack team of autistic coders already have a test server running, it was stress tested last night.

1) Log into https://score.savecoh.com/index.php/
2) Register an account there.
3) Login using the Login button on the menu bar between Search and Register.
4) Click on the Game Account link just under General Category.
5) Scroll to the bottom and create a Game Account Name and Password.
6) Go to http://patch.savecoh.com/tequila.exe and download Tequila.
7) Run Tequila.exe. Make sure SCORE is selected in Tequila. Create the folder you want to place the game into. NOTE: The download may take a while; please be patient. (Even if you have Paragon Chat loaded, still run this step.)
8) Select Play (again, make certain SCORE is selected) and things should move on from there.

Pretty much all powersets in a given archetype are equal in power in general. Certain enemy factions might resist one type of damage or be weak to another, but you can still kill them with anything.

Starting villain missions are really simple enough and will net you a few quick levels, level 4 lets you pick a new power or from a third "generic" power poll which includes travel powers. So far controller with earth/thermal radiation is okay but nothing much in dealing pure damage. Earth is nice for rooting/reducting defense and thermal has some healings/buff/ressurect/debuff skills.

The prestige classes are the Arachnos Soldier, Arachnos Weaver, Peacebringer, and Warshade.
Originally you had to be level 50 and later level 20 to unlock these classes. They're considered advanced classes, not really easy to play at lower levels, but they are able to cover most bases in a team. They're essentially one-man teams on their own right if they're played properly.

Thought I'd tldr the class and power side of character creation.
The general rule is that villain classes are more self-sufficient, even their support classes are DPS main, support powers secondary. (Your main powerset gets powers earlier in level so will generally be ahead of your secondary.) For example, Defenders and Corruptors have the same powers, but defenders have their blast second to support skills. In addition, villain classes get class benefits that are dps-based. Looks like you'll be able to roll any class on any side, which just saves effort (when COH closed down you could eventually move any class to any side)
>Classes
Tanker, Brute, and Scrapper are melee. Tanker and Scrapper flip whether your defense or offense powerset are primary. (I found tankers to be a pain to play solo as they take a long time to kill anything.) Brute is kind of in between (they do more damage the longer they fight), and is generally tanky enough for anything you'd want to do. The one main benefit of a tanker is that all their attacks also aoe taunt.
Support classes (defenders and corruptors) are the closest thing to 'healers' although Empathy is the only powerset focused on healing. Generally you'll debuff the shit out of enemies and buff your allies, and that's more effective than healing.
Controllers and Dominators do crowd control, and CC in COH isn't some pussy shit like modern MMOs. The closest I can think of is an Enchanter in EQ – you can lock down a whole room of enemies once you level up some. You're usually fighting big mobs, so this works out well. Controllers have control main, support secondary, which means solo you have to rely on the minor dps your control powers do to whittle down mobs. Dominator is control and attack, so lock down a group and focus down one enemy.
Blaster barely saw play once you could be a Dominator or Corruptor. They're the ultimate glass cannon – two powersets, both damage based, the secondary usually had some melee, maybe a tiny bit of support. I think the idea behind the never-released Sentinel class was to make a playable Blaster class.
>"Prestige" Classes
peacebringer is a shapeshifting class; you can turn into a tanky crab thing or a floating tentacle blaster thing. Warshades are just kind of crap, although they get teleport early i think.
villain side you get hydra^H^H^H^H arachnos soldiers that can subclass after they level up a bit to get different tricks. They're either shooty gun types or psychics, and get really good team buffs (two arachnos soldiers in a group can buff the whole group to the point where most attacks miss you like 90% of the time).
>Powers
While powers in the same categories are roughly comparable, they have a lot of tradeoffs. For example, Stone Control does very little damage but is really good at locking down enemies, while a lot of Fire Control is just roots, but they do fairly decent damage (certainly the most damage a controller can put out). Stone armor is incredibly tanky but the highest level makes your character so close to immobile that it only ever gets used if teleport is your movement power. Dark powersets do middling damage but usually come with great control/debuff effects. If you roll a villain class you can just pick whatever and be fine soloing, but hero side there are definitely class and powerset combos who feel like you're only going to end a solo fight if either you or the mob die of old age.
>Leveling and grouping
you can run missions, but I figure you'll do enough of that at higher levels, so here's the usual way people get rolling.
>Kill a couple of low level mobs, maybe run a mission or two, get to where you have more than one offensive power plus your crappy origin power that you'll never use after like lvl 8.
>join a sewer group and run through with like eight players, killing things left and right until you get to 8-10 or so. This is usually really quick.
>at 10 you can get a police radio and start doing newspaper missions, which are random indoor missions. Get in a full group with these and run them like crazy. After a few you'll get one to stop a bank robbery or similar.
>villain side works much the same way (no sewers, but the early villain missions are pretty good and level you quickly enough), although you'll be robbing banks instead of protecting them.

The Origin power is just another button to push until you get enough powers to give you a full rotation. That and Brawl are just filler.
Your Power Pool powers are important. Unless you have a specific plan, you want a movement power and the Fitness pool.

until you know your way around, I highly recommend Hover at lvl 6 followed by Flight at lvl 14. You can fight with hover on (although it uses stamina, which you need for your other powers), and if a melee character can't reach you because you're up in the air he'll maybe throw rocks or pull out a gun and do much less damage. Flight is a pain in the ass to use indoors but great getting around on the map, and if you just want to get somewhere without fighting, flight is the best. Although it's worth knowing that eventually you can buy limited-use jetpacks, or get them from quests, so anybody can fly if they really need to for some reason. It's just a lot more convenient to have the power.
Combat Jumping and Superleap are cool if you want to get around like the Hulk, but early on you'll be figuring out how to get around places.
Superspeed is a huge pain in the ass if you don't know the maps, since you're going to need to use ramps and fire escapes to get up on rooftops.
Teleportation is its own deal, can be fun but takes getting used to.
Finally, the live servers eventually added Ninja Run, which is a mix of superleap and superspeed that was good enough to get by and let you not have to take a movement pool.

Everybody always wants the Stamina power. I think it's usually 20 is the earliest you can easily get it if you took the movement pool first. Swift and Hurdle are whatever, Health is a minor regen boost, Stamina means you can actually run sustained powers and push buttons on cooldown without gassing out and not being able to use any powers until you get your breath back. You end up taking this pool for Stamina alone but it's almost always worth it.

Also, regarding the prestige classes, consider them "advanced" classes. Advanced in that, they're a bitch to start out with unless you're very familiar with the game. Peacebringers/Warshades start off really soft. They have piss poor damage until level 6 when they unlock the squid form which turns them into the ultimate glass cannon. Up until higher levels, you'll likely be spending a lot of your time with your face on the floor without proper preparation.
The Spider classes are also in this boat, though not quite in the same vein. The Arachnos Spider Soldier has an innate 200% threat generation, meaning it's more likely to be attacked in a team, however it doesn't start off with the tank stats to support this. The Spider Soldier's offense is also below average to begin with. It deals Lethal damage which is more than likely the most resisted damage type in the game, and the damage is relatively small. To top off these troubles, the Spider Soldier chugs energy like it's going out of style. You'll stay dry on endurance for the first half of your leveling experience.
As a "payoff" for struggling through the low levels with these advanced classes, you'll find they essentially become one-man teams at higher levels. Kheldians (Peacebringers/Warshades) have their shapeshifting powers, allowing them to slip into any role in a team, and have pretty stout self-healing capabilities to bolster their innately high health pool. Spider classes can simultaneously cover most bases in a team, being capable of drawing lots of aggro, stunning multiple enemies at once, dishing out lots of damage, and being able to shrug off hits like they never happened.
Pic related is the stat total of my Crab Spider that I used back before the game was shut down. This cunt was utterly unkillable and could contend with Scrappers in terms of damage output.
