Unity and Unreal Engine have "good" lighting without much effort on the designers part, so most devteams barely think about lighting and color composition at all. They just slap some colored lights here and there, leave the sun's global illumination alone and call it done. No soul required.

It took more effort and care to make levels well-lit in Source, so more soul went into it from good designers.

why do all indie shooters on UE4 and cryengine have shitty flat textures, static vegetation and everything looks pretty much low-res and washed out? I've seen people make gorgeous demos for free and yet studios don't bother with the visuals at all despite having the option to make it look good
