From what I remember, SA1 was the only scripted title of the "Dreamcast" era games, and it's a large part of why it's the most "broken" (The tripple loop and ramp before the spikes on Emerald Coast, running on air in Windy Valley, pinball in Casinoplis, all of Speedy Highway, the middle of Final Egg). When you actually get the chance to control things completely (Second half of Windy Valley, Red Mountain, Lost World), the game instantly becomes a lot better.

To get A you have to kill pretty much every enemy and collect all rings. It's not even hard. The bullshit A ranks are the ones where you have to find chaos emeralds that appear in RNG spots throughout the level, and your rank is based on time.

Programing Sonic's complex physics engine was already difficult in 2D, now that the team are in a 3d environment it would be much harder to program. They decided to use scripted events to make Sonic look faster. Sonic is really fun to play as when he isn't going through some awkward scripted slope. He can run up rolls, skip large sections with his spindash, etc. The team assumed that no one would ever stop in a loop I suppose, which is why you can die by breaking the sequence.

Essentially, yes. And if you do try to get A ranks it becomes more monotonous and slows down the gameplay. I forgot to mention in case you didn't know that the only reason to get A ranks in SA2 anyway is to unlock different chao eggs and items. If you manage to autistically get A rank on every stage, you unlock Green Hill Zone, which is incredibly short and does nothing when you beat it.

I agree, but I like Sonic Adventure, not really the whole game, but just Sonic's levels. I really think we can all agree that the 2d Sonic games were better made. Like, 3d Sonic games are really lazy in some areas. Like, stopping in a loop kills you. Also, Sonic was known for it's bigger levels than Mario. 3d Sonic levels are extremely straight forward. video related is a fairly recent game that is that sort of gameplay. its not well made, it has many problems, but the idea is nice, i could see a sequel being a good game.

I thought the main difference is that the 3D Mario games were levels with a variety of objectives to complete (Unlike the 2D games), meanwhile the 3D Sonic games still emphasize the player getting from point A to B (Akin to the 2D games).

Sonic's developers believed their own lies/marketing told to journos, about Sonic being about "going fast", when that never was the main attractive of the series. Instead, it was the level design. But to make retards/journos have something they can understand, the speed was the focus of the marketing team. And, as I mentioned, that only applies to the first Adventure game. In SA2, you can skip entire sections of the levels, Heroes has entirely different paths based on which character you're using, and then there's Shadow which is perhaps the most "open" of them. Can't comment on '06 though.

To be honest I'd be down for a Sonic Adventure 2 Battle mod that changed the levels to suit Sonic's movement glitches and tech. SA2 lets you build up so much speed yet no level is made with speed in mind, ironically.

I wonder if the assets from the levels can be moved around, that'd be awesome. Sonic in all stages but all stages built on Sonic's tech.

I will say that I don't think Sonic Adventure 1's level design is very good compared to Sonic Adventure 2's. They got basic movement going fine, but the level design was really perfected in the sequel. Adventure 1 does have more scripted sections, but it also has a good number that are not scripted. Adventure 2 makes better use of things like alternate routes and such.

But they aren't. The Adventure titles have very little scripting, especially compared to later 3D Sonics. They pay genuine attention to momentum based physics. What scripting you get is during sequences like the Radical Highway run down the building.

I have plenty of memories of fucking up the "on rails" parts in Adventure 1, nearly flying off the track, then desperately trying to hang on by jumping across the parts you wouldn't normally stand on. Even as a kid I loved experimenting by spindashing off random slopes which created shortcuts through the levels. That game is more open than it's given credit for, but I haven't played the later ones so I can't speak for them.
