The chalice dungeons are entirely optional but there are some bosses exclusive to the chalices, so if you want to experience *everything* you should grind them out. You can do them whenever, they have no story impact.
The dlc is fantastic and you should do it, it's fine to play it at the end of the game before you go to new game plus. It's a hard zone regardless.

The key is available in the hidden village area that unlocks in the final night phase, just go get it and open the door same with the nightmare frontier which you can enter at any point after getting the stone. >DLC is actually tuned for NG+, it is hard as balls to complete on a NG run but by the time you get to NG+ you should be around your endgame level to trounce it
>Chalice dungeons are literally endless fun to be had, though if you want to experience them a bit boiled down, go through the false depths after you've spent a couple hours running through them to get the hang of how they function
>Each weapon can be made into a multitude of builds, including the fact that Arcane on or off changes the makeup of a build on a basic level.

the locales aren't what make it fun, the enemy placements are all different and the boss rushing always feels good. Fighting those hidden bosses is a delight, especially since the chalice dungeons are so far removed from the main game and still maintain an actually decent roster of non-main-game bosses with interesting movesets.

Chalice dungeons are the absolute worst part of the game and are an unfinished waste of space. Especially how if for some ungodly reason you want to do a gimmick build you're gonna have to farm them for the proper gems. There's no redeemable factor to them period, the enemy variations wear thin and reveal how similarly a lot of the enemies fight.

Bring bolt paper, or Tonitrus if you're a madman and actually leveled Arcane. In the first phase, kill all the little spiders, because Rom doesn't do anything until you attack her. Once she teleports, you need to DPS race her bar because otherwise you'll spend the whole fight dodging meteor after meteor. Don't hit the face, stay on her sides. Oh, and one more thing: Once you're done, take no risks and get back to the Dream ASAP by running forward. I know a few people who have lost those Echoes.

Try to stick to her rear and do charged thrust attacks. Apply bolt paper in her second phase. Step back and heal if she casts her AOE damage field. If your DPS is high enough, you should only have to dodge 1-2 ACB barrages. Angle your camera upwards so you know when they're coming.

Sekiro has to be played in a very aggressive way. You have to break posture, and to do so you have to attack to reduce it and avoid it recovering, reduce the enemy's vitality so it recovers slower or not at all, and being close force the enemy to be more aggressive, which means more parries and deflection, ergo more posture breaking. Otherwise the fights take forever. Is actually pretty nice how you can finish off bosses pretty fast if you keep a good attack and defend yourself accordingly. The biggest flaw instead lies in what >>16337993 said. The unblockable attacks are okey, it is not different to tells used in games like MGR or Bayonetta to tell you what attacks can't be blocked, you still have to look to the animation to know how to dodge it, but the problem is that From wants to force you to do them one way and punish you if you take any other option. So you may want to dodge, or jump over an attack, the animation may look like it should have been dodge, but you actually get hit because the tracking is incredible high and some hitboxes are a bit wonky. Add to this the tools are mostly situational, with very little attack variation or dealing to little damage, as well as only being able to carry 3, and you'll be spaming R1, which can get monotonous and make you feel more like playing Simon Say, as some had said. To this, add that you also have posture, which actually forces you disengage and recover it, or use Ichimonji, as is the only way to recover posture, which made it basically the skill most players end up using because of how important posture is. I think it is a good game, but has some flaws, not only in the combat system but other aspects too that hold it for being great.
All and all, I'd say I like Demon's Souls and Bloodborne more. Funny enough, despite Sekiro being faster, Bloodborne still feels more "exciting" because of no blocking. If you mess up a deflect, while you lose a great amount of posture, usually you avoid damage and can walk out and recover by holding L1, but there is no that chance in Bloodborne, and there is something exhilarating about dodge and trying to attack while doing so that takes you into the "zone" if you know what I mean. If there is something I would change from Bloodborne is the stamina system. I would remove it, I think it is a mechanic that just doesn't fit well with the offensive play style of Bloodborne, and it worked well for Sekiro.

Despite the missing content of Bloodborne, it still feels as one of the most complete "Souls" game together with Demon's Souls. Also helps that they went beyond that any other contemporary games (at least "renowed" published games) with its lovercraftian story, going so far as to mislead the audience with trailers and hide the truth, which have kind of a very interesting sense of meta narrative. Do you want to focus on infused weapons or tools? If it's weapons, 50 ARC is sufficient plus a complementary stat (most ARC-complementary weapons lend themselves to STR) but if it's to focus on tools, you gotta stick to starting weapons and take ARC as high as possible.
As for optimizing, it's the hardest one, doubly so if you play offline. First of all, you'll likely need the Lost version of your weapons of choice and you're in for a world of pain if you want the very best gems but if you're willing to settle for less than optimal, it's easy to farm since they're all dropped by common enemies. Your FRCs of choice are Isz and Lower Loran; Isz has triangular gems of all sorts but the enemy you'll want to run into is a NPC Hunter using the Keeper set - they drop radial gems (the hardest to farm for ARC builds), the pyro wolfman always drops triangular gems regardless of dungeon but you can also find him at Lower Loran; LL is where you'll get the waning gems and the enemy you'll want for farming is the large werewolf with a red aura signaling he's got better drops. You might take a peek at Ihyll, because the fire weapon mooks drop cursed radial fire gems and the fatties might also drop fire/bolt radial gems and I'd say it's worth having backup Tempering gems for bosses like Logarius and Laurence. Anyway, with this you can get about +23% gems.
Overall, I hate how fucked ARC build users are with gem drops. Tempering is always the common drop which should not apply to Isz and Loran where they ought to be rare drops.

The people who complains about this are usually the ones that complain about the Abhorrent Beast's elongated arm punch My favorite tactic in this phase is to hug this boss to death and spam R1 until he staggers, Accursed Ludwig has few attacks that reliably hit you at point-blank range. His MGS phase is debatably easier but still hard for me since he can punish you for sticking too close to him, if i recall correctly i died more to his MGS form than the beast form, but hey that's just me.
