It was pretty good. Needed more shit to actually do but the framework was there if Rockstar had gave a shit beyond making a bare bones next gen GTA to abandon. The DLC made some minor efforts toward that but ultimately were disappointing as well.

GTA 4 had a lot of small things that made it a good game and GTA 5 had a lot of big things that made it a better game.

It's likely because of Saints Row. Around the time of GTAIV's release, Saint's Row II was released, and it marketed itself as a wacky and zany alternative to GTAIV's bleak atmosphere. Needless to say, Saint's Row was a huge success, and Cockstar took notice. Not only that, but Cockstar has always tried to thrive on manufactured controversy surrounding their games, and they likely realized that, with the coming of age of the meme generation, they could get even more shekels by trying to appeal to their kind of humor. This kills two birds with one stone, because they're dealing with what they believe to be their main competition and appealing to a huge demographic in the process.

Most of the acceptable missions are a direct rip off from San Andreas, the only one that isn't is the one where SWAT swarms Michael's house. One genuinely fun mission in the entire "game".

Too many people criticized GTA 4 on release for being to serious and praised Saints Row 3 for being "wacky" and "fun". Saints Row 3 was a mistake, Saints Row 2 was better because it was as grounded GTA SA/VC/3. GTA 4 was a fine follow up, where it's still kind of goofy but the goofiness works because its serious. Same with its satire. When everything is goofy nothing is. When everything is satire nothing is.

All of this shit is really irrelevant when main mechanics suck ass compared to 4. Downgraded gunplay is the biggest crime kikestar commuted when they developed 5, with cops blatantly cheating coming after that. Good gunplay makes 4 one of the best games and I wish we had more dedicated developers who put some efforts into making proper gunplay in shooters. I will never get tired from killing everything with a pistol in 4.

Everything regarding physics in IV is fun. I had a great time pushing people around and throwing them off a certain ridge (near one Burger Shot), it felt so satisfying. The physics in V got a downgrade (deliberate, since it's the same engine) and everyone fucking dies instantly.

GTA IV sold well and got good reviews, but there were also a lot of people not happy with it. Some of its shortcomings may have been also due to engine limitations. I liked IV a lot but can see why people didn't like it. Perhaps they were trying to do some 2deep4u social commentary about modern crime or they originally intended for IV to be much more like a sim.

It looked like shit, had a shitty soundtrack, had shitty driving and shitty physics. I hated the story but that's mainly because I hated the characters. It really wasn't that's just nostalgia. Grand Theft Auto has always been post modern and has always had a slight liberal slant. GTA San Andreas only benefited from being set in 1992 so things like the LA Riots and Rampart Scandal which were huge news pieces back in the 90s were just seen as novelties by 2004 and most people today have no idea they even happened. We only really see them as jokes in movies. In 20 years most of GTA 5's politics will just be see as comedic.

The one thing that made me pissed about GTA IV was the lack of purpose in getting money. Once you got a few suits and bought decent guns from the alleyshops there was no purpose in doing any missions. The story revolves around how you're poor and need money to live the high life but the only things you can buy are 100$ resprays, 1$ hotdogs/sammiches, and 2000$ suits.

And then in GTA V you finally get to buy some businesses but get ZERO access to the interiors even though one literally had a scripted interior you used in a random event. The lack of purchasing houses unless you're doing the gay GTA online bs. Whoever comes up with Rockstars game economy is retarded.
