EVEN IF NISA HAS THE RIGHTS TO CS3, THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN SLEEP! KEEP FIGHTING! DON'T GIVE IN!

>Latest News

-Trails of Cold Steel for the PS4 dropped on March 26th. It features all the quality of life improvements from the PC version like turbo mode as well as extra English voice acting and dual audio. You can also transfer your data from Vita or PS3 to the game and pick up where you left off. CS2 on PS4 is currently slated for some time in May.

-Ys IX gameplay was revealed on March 24th. Not much was shown but the game seems to empathize more open areas and considerably more versatile movement options. One character is shown to be able to run up walls, another can glide etc.

-Kondo revealed that the Trails team has been split in two. One half will be doing preliminary work on the Calvard arc while the other will be working on an as of yet unspecified DLC for CS4. Not much info was given out about it, other than some character art for certain characters who were missing in CS4 initially. Whether or not this will be a Sky 3rd type situation is unknown as of now. More info is slated for June with Trails' 15th anniversary.

-On January 17th, 2019 NISA formally announced they had acquired the rights to the Trails series (and likely has had them for some time) and would be releasing Cold Steel 3 in fall of 2019 for the PS4 (no other platforms have been announced so far). In an attempt of damage control it was announced Brittany "Hatsuu" Avery, Ryan Thompson and Kris Kniggev (all veterans of XSeed's work on the CS series) had been contracted to work on the game to ensure script accuracy, do translation work and, in Hatsuu's case, manage the VAs and dub (Sean Chiplock has already been confirmed as returning as Rean and at this point several others have announced their return as well). This is probably been the biggest fear of the Falcom General for a while and it's here now. NISA's play here is pretty smart and a good portion of the initial outrage was quelled by these staff announcements. For now the best course of action will be to gather information and watch NISA very closely for when they release content from the translation (like screenshots or trailers). Collecting info from NISA's past deeds is also a good plan, but keep in mind it will be difficult to make much headway with that alone until we can show they're fucking up this translation too thanks to their insulation via the stunt hires. Being attentive and vigilant is your best course of action here.

-Ys IX: Monstrum Nox was revealed. It is the furthest game in the Ys timeline and will release in fall of 2019.

-The PC versions of Cold Steel 1 and 2 had dual audio patched in, so as long as you are able to update your game an undub is no longer necessary if you want to play it with Japanese audio.

-On the same day, October 26th, both Tom Lipschultz and Brittany "Hatsuu" Avery left XSeed. Hatsuu has since gone freelance and was hired by NISA to work on Cold Steel 3.

- As of this posting Trails of Cold Steel 4 has been out for numerous months in Japan, so obviously the whole game is spoiled. Try to keep things behind spoilertext here.

- The Switch port of Ys VIII released with a litany of bugs, including not even having dual audio (NISA's sole claim to fame) at launch.

- After an email campaign, a retranslation, apologies, and 7 months of delays, Ys 8 finally got released on PC. And NISA fucked up, the port is so terrible that only 51% of the Steam reviews being positive (it was originally at 25%, but shills will shill).

- Also available on PC: the Trails in the Sky trilogy (now with Turbo mode), Xanadu Next, Ys: I & II Chronicles, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin, Ys SEVEN, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2, Zwei!! 1 and 2

>Fan-translations

>Trails from Zero at 80%+ (being edited by Geofront/Zerk). There is already a beta (as in a rough translation done before Zerk even started working on it) out, though the quality is on the low side, though still coherent from start to finish

>Trails to Azure was leaked. There are a few typos and every once in a while there's an awkward line or two but all in all it's a solid translation. https://www.romhacking.net/translations/3679/. Flame's edit of the translation is also out officially now. It's a better worded script at the cost of pretty much breaking the voice mod. Both are available packaged with torrents if you care to look for them.

>Everything else in the works seems to be MIA.

I would bet a considerable amount of money NISA gets it, just given Falcom's current relationship with them. As for what that means…I mean look at Ys 8. Post patch I'd say the translation is okay (it's not TX bad at any rate) and it runs fine on PS4, but all the ports have some kind of problem at least. We'll probably never get the quality we were used to again. I suppose it's technically possible NISA could either be bullied by their parent company enough to take more care (doubtful) or lose the licences (unlikely but still slightly more probable), but for the time being I think we're going to need to rely on ourselves to clean up their mess like Nep did. What exactly will need to be done will probably change on a case by case basis since NISA's fuckups tend to be varied and unpredictable.

If we're going to have a party game, it might as well be cute girls.

The two greatest reasons I enjoyed TiTS was the world building and attention to detail. For the former, all technology and magic coming from the Septium, and everything derivating from that. For the latter, all the NPCs dialogue, and even little scenes where the characters stop to eat, they sit at the table and there's food on the table. Now I'm on ToCS, and I can see the attention for detail is still there. But I'm afraid, and now my question I want a simply yes or no answer, are things, like Rean's secret power (white hair etc) still confined within these rules? I'm afraid of they throwing away all they've built for "coolness". Still, I understand how you can stretch your imagination with the Septium, especially Time, Mirage and Space.

Rean's powers exist for an in-universe reason. There's a tiny bit of Sky that kind of deals with similar things, but it's really hard to go into what Rean's deal is without spoiling the entirety of the Erebonia arc, which kind of also has some implications for the whole series going forward.

Also that third image is pretty fucking neat, where did you get it?

>>16306673

It all depends on how the bosses and enemies are designed.

There will never be true authentic difficulty in Ys again as long as bosses are designed with the player's ability to avoid all damage at the press of a button. Which I have no doubt is the case with Ys IX.

f0ba9a  No.16307024

>>16306943

It's not so much that as the gameplay is clearly and indisputably worse.

The skill system doesn't make sense if all it is is a better attack string and there are no opportunities for sick combos.

The party system falls flat on its ass because it's nothing more than three health bars and Dana's iteration of it(three forms for the same character, each form has completely different hit strings, passive abilities, interactions with puzzles, and while they share the same skills they all have different forms for it) was the undisputed best, since it brought true gameplay diversity while doing away with the shitty three health bar system as well as gimping an individual character's damage since all three characters should be at some point dealing damage to the boss.

The insane amount of materials and whatnot was literally fixed by 8's shop system which pretty much did away with Gold and brought back weapons and armors into clear tiers(yeah they had that useless "dodge vs pure defense" tradeoff but it's not like a stat change in the order of ~10 points is a big difference anymore, unlike the previous games) which require materials that you are showered with purely by going through the game, or doing raid/hunt missions, which brings the question of why have so many materials if Origin's Gold+ rare upgrade material is all you could possibility need.

Having access to MULTIPLE, commonly available healing items, all without a reasonable cap(I think 8 you can go up to 99 four different revive items) mid boss fights and mid fights in general means it's completely reasonable for the devs to think that having enemies one shot you or fuck a good chunk of your health away in the blink of an eye is reasonable because you can just heal up and revive at virtually zero cost. 8's true final boss is a fucking joke at this considering in the "dungeon"(more like corridor) before the final boss all enemies drop revive items and healing items by the multiples which is to make up for the fact that you can no longer have access to shops and the final boss kind of comes unexpectedly and after another boss that REQUIRES you to revive since it places emphasis on the rock paper scissors mechanic.

There's the rock paper scissors mechanic, which 8 practically solves by making it useless through the use of the break mechanic, where after the required damage type deals a bit of damage to the resilent enemy their armor breaks and everyone can deal regular damage to them. So all you need do is stick a break rate up item on a damage type you hate(in my experience it's anything that isn't Adol's type, although Hummel was neat), spam a fast low SP cost skill a couple of times and BREAK.

Finally there's Flash Guard and Flash move which purely fucks with every single combat design choice ever. Why have a 3D space and movement speed differences, different attack strings, different skills, whatever, if at the press of a button you can not only become invincible for a second, but also be granted the ability to either spam skills at an incredibly hihg speed or get crits on all of your attacks, or both since it's very easy to get both buffs at the same time. Why then, would bosses be anything more than

>slow wide close ranged swipe

>very slow ranged attack whose projectiles deal damage in a sustained damage over time area of effect

>camera moves for attack that prevents you from reaching the enemy while it's in progress(flying enemies flying far from reach while you're just sitting there like an asshole)

>Roar which pushes you away from boss

>Body was too long

f0ba9a  No.16307026

>>16307024

Why approach any boss in any way that isn't press button, be invincible, especially since hitboxes are kind of wonky at times, or the fact that you can be one shot anyways? Why fight any boss without copious use of crits or faster attack animations since bosses have insane amounts of health? What good is a 3D world and jumping if you can approach every boss the same way because every way else is unwieldy or too slow? And there aren't even bosses where you are supposed to use actual movement, like sprinting or jumping to avoid an attack because every attack is pretty much a giant wall or a giant line that you have to flash guard or flash move. And it shows in the design, you don't get stuff like Origin's boss fights anymore where you have that sweet blend of fast rival "human" characters(those characters are either a joke because admist three characters doing flashy skills how the fuck are you going to see any of their attacks) or large bosses that tower over you and you get to climb on them and break apart pieces of them, dodge large sweeping attacks while simultaneously moving in to attack and reaching their weak spots and it was so fun and intense and neat and there's only one boss in Ys8 who comes even remotely close to that and surprise it's the optional boss for Dana's dungeon who zips all over the place and rarely has a dull moment. FUCK.

If there's one clear example as to how skills have ruined the games, it can be seen in just about any boss. In previous games, there was rarely a dull moment where the boss simply stares at you like a dope while you do all these elaborate, long animations because all of your damage lies in skills. In previous games, all of your damage is either magic, which is near instant, or your attack string, which can be cancelled at any time and felt like a completely natural extension of your moveset. Attacking and movement never felt like two seperate entities in previous Ys games, which they do now. If you have trouble understanding what I'm saying, consider one of the older musou games like Samurai Warriors 1. Consider how movement transitions into attacks which transitions into movement. Those are basically the newer Ys games.

I'm currently on ToCS but I don't mind minor spoilers if it satiates my autism.

Do you understand Orbal energy as a scientifical energy, Thermal, Kinect, etc, (although Space, Mirage and Time are more about controlling dimension, time, space.. what would mirage be?, than about energy) extracted from a fantastical source (Septium to Sepith to Quartz) through the use of Orbments, or simply as literal magic being harnessed through a technological lens?

I think the latter makes more sense. You have Orbments “attuned” to the user. That is how you get Orbment lines and Element-locked slots. Maybe magic is latent in everyone, but nowadays all can use thanks to technology; before that, only a few could use magic. This latent natural magic also explains some more extraordinary crafts that couldn’t be explained only by techniques. That would make every technology in the game, magitech. They look like ordinary appliances that could fit in our world, but powered by magic. That way, an oven has a fire quartz built-in, a ventilator would have a wind quartz, etc. But the game makes a distinction between orbments and tactical orbments. How exacly are the quartz activated in each? Is EP the “battery” for the orbment, activating quartz through this conventional electric energy? Would an oven be literally casting Fire magic, or are the orbments in it used as circuit and merely providing energy; therefore only Tactical Orbments can use Magic (arts)? If it’s the former, why are people using Airships instead of teleporting themselves through the use of Space septium? Is a powerful orbment expensive?

Mirage is the power of perception and cognition and controls causality, and it's definitely the least defined.

>Do you understand Orbal energy as a scientifical energy or simply as literal magic being harnessed through a technological lens?

Orbments are fairly clearly presented as magi-tech. So, in truth it's kind of a hybrid. I don't think it's specifically a spell that just gets transferred through circuitry because quartz are basically kind of like computer chips and switching them around produces different results. That being said, the results aren't based entirely on scientific concepts either because even the people who make Orbments can't really say the exact properties of what makes septium forged into these chips do what they do, only that it does, which why ancient artifacts are still basically black boxes that can't be parsed.

>Maybe magic is latent in everyone, but nowadays all can use thanks to technology; before that, only a few could use magic.

There are some things that point to this being possible. There are people who can use "magic" without orbments, after all.

>Is EP the “battery” for the orbment

That seems to be the case

>why are people using Airships instead of teleporting themselves through the use of Space septium

Because no one has made anything that can do this. At least…as far as the laymen know. Ouroboros seem to have ways to teleport, and there are certain magical arts that can do this as well, however the people who make orbments still only kind of understand them. Something like a commercially made teleporter would probably be way too advanced for the average scientist to make.

I forgot to mention, you should be careful about supporting Soyny right now because of their extreme censorship behavior.

If you get the limited editions (dunno if this applies to Steelbooks or not because the cost seems unusually low for an LE sort of thing) that's better since they get almost nothing and it supports the developer/publisher a lot more, plus having more shit.

I really enjoyed Faxanadu on NES back in the day, and I think they're tangentially related, but what does this modern weeb game play like?

Are we talking visual novel? Something like SMT, or Persona? Or more traditional JRPG with a modern setting?

Tokyo Xanadu plays more closely to the Zwei games (same devs). Its clunky and imo not that good. The dungeon designs for the most part are straight corridors and the enemy a.i. is janky as fuck. That feeling and the story just makes it worth everything. I remember finishing the first chapter at like 3AM, feeling tired and exhausted but somehow excited and emotional with the absolutely insane ending that happened. Same with SC.

This was one of the death throes of Ys as a technical action game. Never mind how they decided to handle the skills after Ys 7, that killed everything. The funny thing is, they could still implement that as a magic spell that drains mana or something, separate from the SP to do the skills and be awesome. But no. Shit, they could have tied it to a magic system that would imbue skills with elements to further increase the variety in combat, kinda like fixing Ark's entire elemental swords idea.

That's not a bad idea at all and it's a fucking shame they never got to capitalize on it with Tokyo Xanadu considering it was the same teams who made the games. The closest thing to a Nayuta sequel has been Nier Automata with 2Butt's and 9Shota's pod combat while fighting and dodging. And Falcom could have capitalized on that concept like P* did. Shame.

Went back and tested the skills on Ys7 and I think I remember how I steamrolled through the game : I tried dodging out of everything but you can't like you said and the charged attack is ass if you don't start with it or do the "attack a bunch, hold attack, dodge out, dodge in and unleash the charge" and repeat until you gain enough SP but I put all my long-ass skills on the team so that I could constantly switch in and out without penalty and while my Adol was attacking with the Pentagram I could babmboozle other with Geiss for example. That' s not saying that I excuse the system but it had an idea of ballance around the team which is fucking evaporated after Celceta where you gain all the fucking super bonuses without any sort of merit. And the reason i think this happened is due to P* games : I think what Falcom tried to do and appeal to the hardcores was create a system where they could gain beneifts from dodging like Bayo's witch time so that the game would be centered around the party and individuals but no game of Falcom's is centered around a thing like that, baiting and attacking super chunky foes so the whole thing makes bosses look like the regular angels of Bayo 1. There's an amazing layer of irony here.

I think they really need to go back to the drawing board when it comes to these things and think it through a bit, maybe have some characters with that ability only or don't let them be so Op and negate the type advantages if you still wanna keep them.

This won't make mobile good, it never will. It will just make Ys worse.

It should never have been done in the first place. You can't fundamentally change something that's roots were always cancer. Mobile gaming will never be hardcore, it will never not be predatory, and it will never be anything good.

We've only seen the decline of gaming in terms of quality in all sectors. Mobile was always shit, but its even worse than when it was more recent.

>>16375994

That's why I hate it so much. Falcom cares so little about integrity of their products now. Cold Steel already released with microtransactions up the ass.

The way I see it is a downward trend of their practices. They'll treat customers more and more like money cows to be milked over time. I didn't think much of their gacha but it was in the back of my mind, but full-on doing something like this? Its a fucking insult and disgrace to their franchises to put a mainline game on the platform.

Mobile is an irredeemable mess.

To me its barely any different from Diablo Immortal, though I gave up on Blizzard a long time ago it still felt like a spitting in my face for them to get more money because money is the only thing that matters to them anymore.

Of course, I can't say that for Falcom yet. They're still capable of quality games, but the level of greed, the lack of concern for their western fanbase. This all points to a general trend with Falcom.

Giving NISA the license to Ys VIII was already a spitting in my face. Giving them CS3 was a kick to the groin.

Porting Ys VIII to mobile?

That's…

I can't fucking excuse this shit anymore.

I'm sick of this.

I was willing to excuse Falcom for Ys VIII. Maybe they were just retarded and didn't know NISA was bad, but this… this all is fucking horrible.

DMC 5 might be considered good, but in terms of predatory and anti-consumer practices (microtransaction cash shop for orbs and fucking denuvo too?) its fucking cancerous and points to a bad fucking trend. It coming out after DmC helped it not look as absolute shit too because it had that godawful thing to be compared to. The heck are you talking about? Paid cosmetic DLC are a form of microtransactions. Do you think that microtransactions means "required to play the game" or something? They're nonessential yes, but microtransactions nonetheless. What's more, there are paid shit that provide actual, in-game advantages.

Microtranactions refer to any virtual good, thing, mechanic or advantage that can be purchased for a small price (hence the term "micro") in addition to, for, or in conjunction with the base game. The only sort of paid DLC that I wouldn't call a microtransaction are actual content DLC and purchaseable characters (though the latter might still count as that).

>>16377578

I'm just going to assume you're shitposting.

d682e0  No.16378130

>>16377598

Microtransactions are specifically repeatable purchases you can make. You can buy as many of them as you want. Like buying more "gems" in a mobile game to let you play longer without having to wait. An example of microtransactions in a single player game would be the xp boosts in modern AssCreed games that give you like a six hour boost to your XP. You can buy as many of those as you want. Cold Steel's DLCs are all one time purchase items. Once you bought them, you can't buy them again. And, as I said, unlike in the case of Ubisoft the game is not designed to try and force you to get them either, since the game is extremely easy and the items you can buy are entirely unnecessary. And the cosmetics are just costumes that affect nothing.

d96d24  No.16378204

>>16378130

I have never heard of microtransactions needing to be repeatable. Are you saying buying a skin isn't a microtranaction? Skins are usually non-repeatable purchases in games, yet most would consider those to be microtransactions.

The nonessential argument is irrelevant. That just points to the level of predation for now, which isn't as bad as other companies yet but will only get worse because of tolerant faggots.

d682e0  No.16378248

>>16378204

Buying a skin isn't a microtransaction. Buying a lootbox is, since those are repeatable. And yes, there is a difference. One is significantly more predatory than the other. It's also worth noting that "skins" exist in multiplayer games designed to be returned to again and again, and so the skins are constantly updated to continue that cashflow. CS doesn't do that. There were some packs of item DLC you could buy when the game came out. Once you bought them you bought them and that was that. You don't have to buy them again for new games or something. They're always there are more was never released. So you saying the game has "microtransactions" is pretty much a blatant attempt to make something seem worse than it is.

d96d24  No.16378311

>>16378248

>buying a skin isn't a microtransaction

I don't buy this shit. Where's your definition coming from?

Where is this "repeatable" dimension? What is buying a skin then?

You're only saying that repeatable purchases are microtransactions. Buying weapon unlocks. What are those? Are those not microtransactions? Buying certain in-game items. Those aren't microtransactions because they're not repeatable?

You're arguing that the term makes them look bad. This "cosmetic DLC" and other "game-boosting" bullshit is a nicer way of saying microtransactions. Especially when there's enough of them to make fucking packs to purchase.

I don't care if the term is loaded to you in your opinion. I feel its a legitimate usage of the term, and I'm calling it out as such.

If you don't feel that way, fine. But what they're doing is objectively cancerous. Even if they somehow, some way aren't microtransactions, who knows what'll be the case by the next Trails saga.

here's a hint: things won't be getting better, that's for damn sure.

d682e0  No.16378340

>>16378311

Because the business model for microtransactions are based entirely on repeatable purchases. In a game like Fortnite, I suppose skins would be considered that since they are always making more to keep that money coming. One time purchase DLC isn't in the same league as that. Not even close. Cosmetic DLC is the norm in jrpgs. Literally every company does it. It's just silly costumes that don't actually add anything to the game and, again, it's not even like they keep making them. So you're right, things aren't going to get "better." They're going to be exactly the same. They're going to be what they have been. This is a nontroversy. Call me when they throttle the game leveling to make you buy DLC or cut out story content to patch in as DLC. Then you can call it predatory. This is nothing.

>Call me when it turns to the worst kind of cancer

>because their business model isn't based on repeat purchases it doesn't mean anything

>one-time purchase DLC isn't in the same league as skins and weapon unlocks

I'm failing to see how.

Its nonessential. Its a one-time purchase. Its cosmetic. What's the fucking difference? That because fortnite adds in more skins over time for purchase? That's a fucking weak difference and you know it.

There's also a fucking glut of them.

DLC like that being the "norm" doesn't make it okay. It means they're following the trends of the industry, which shows signs of only getting worse.

>its not like they keep making them

Because its a single player game, but there are still a fucking lot of them and they're usually frontloaded.

The fact that you want to wait till things are at their worst to admit anything suggests to me that your principles aren't strong.

What are you going to do when that fucking happens? Not buy their games? Once that happens, it'll be the "norm" for singleplayer games. Then what will you do? Pirate everything and become a recluse? Is that what you want?

What I'm seeing here from you is that, because they aren't literally farming their players yet, that it isn't predatory. That because they aren't adding in more DLC over time yet that its not predatory.

You've become used to this utter cancer, don't be surprised once Falcom gets worse.

Not the same guy but what do you expect the six guys that frequent the Falcom threads to do my guy? Beyond bitching about DLC and being sad that Falcom does that as well that is? Falcom being DLC-pozzed as well is the last thing anyone needed, ever but we can't do much because obviously, even if let's say, /v/ stopped buying games with DLC on, we had so many more cazulshits gobbling them up like they were cumgeysers and they were thirsty whores. Even the nip cazuals brought in to the DLC craze without much of a second thought.

Arguing semantics and sperging out tripping the thread isn't gonna help much, unless you wanna contribute in a good way like, I dunno, how about we find who those chiniggers are that will distribute the game on phones and compile info and macros on them and warn some goddamn people or at the very least, understand the situation behind their collaboration with Falcom. Because if that shit is anything like the Dynasty Warriors 9 behind-the-back deals to include chinese dubs, KT bending five times backwards to actually gain an official chinese audience now that they allow PC games from other countries, so KT made everyone bland, got them "realistic armour" and wen >MUH realism with a huge open world Chinkland etc then it's gonna spell very dark days for Falcom.

On the other hand, if it's the usual one-off shit, like DMC4 Refrain like I mentioned before and it falls on its face, good. That will mean that Falcom will probably have the sense to tell the chinashits to fuck off.

I think dodge and guard are not good fits for Ys at all. Since day 1 all Ys was about was dodging enemy attacks and good positioning from bump combat to Ark combat. Dodge is worthless because unless you gimp movement there's no reason to not just run, so they gimped movement.

Guard is shit because it completely takes out the threat from any enemy. Why have complex attacks or anything if all you can do is hit L1 and voila, guard no damage. To compensate, every enemy now deals a gazillion damage and attacks are pretty much identical.

It pisses me off how bosses aren't even creative anymore. Where's the visually impressive centipede that rotates around a tower dropping mines on you, that you have to climb while it's slithering and tear it piece by piece? Where's the big fucking mantis that throws giant buzzsaws at you? Where is literally any boss that isn't creature that's twice/thrices your size that swipes at you?

You have exceptions(often shit ones, like any human boss who's obscured by all the three party members spamming skills, or Ys 8's kraken which was a borefest revolving around a barely functional gimmick) but nothing really creative or even fun to play against with a few exceptions, mostly Dana's bosses.

983381  No.16382081

It's either that or give back the dodge-guard with magic and i-frames from Felghana(I don't mind that) and have the jumps have i-frames as well or have the attacks not have overhead properties because, at least in Ys Vs Sora, a lot of the attacks, when I tried to jump over them now that I went back to it, where almost impossible to avoid in the air but could be somewhat dodged on the ground. The positioning is there but they never followed up on that, even when they added jumping in the main Ys series again.

That also reminds me, why the fuck was Geiss the only boss we could only as Adol in Ys7 but murderboy wasn't? But the trend was more and more obnoxious in later games and the final boss of Ys Celeta was downirhgt stupid with how the system had changed.

The way I see it people will gobble up them up because they're heavier on story and bloat content. They can have better writing and fill the game with a shitton of crafting content, copious amounts of sidequests and minigames but at the end of the day none of it is as remotely compelling as the previous games.

Even the music took a dive for the worse. Instead of excellent pumped up music to fuck up monsters we get generic JRPG melodies that are more often than not unremarkable and the lamest boss themes possible, or in Celceta's case an OST that's like 80% garbage.

>>16385469

I don't think the writing is better either really. It's just wordier when you could get across your points far better in earlier games. And that insistance of keeping Adol quiet worked when the story was marked by its brevity in text and length in environmental and boss storytelling but now that its flipped and bosses are utterly mindless obstacles half the time + plus you have a party, Adol being more tight lipped that a tuna can is straight up bizarre. Music has taken a dive, I really can't defend that and it shows with how much I go back to the Felghana soundtrack constantly, especially vid related. There's just something unmateched when it comes to old Falcom OSTs these days and it's a shame they cop out on the harder hitting sounds.

One thing I'll defend is the "crafting" when it comes to armours and weapons, I think that is needed in some way. if we aren't gonna bother with giving each sword a unique function anymore like in Ark(where it combined crafting and uniqueness) or have them be clear indications of strength and have a use(in 7 with the skills being learned) then just have crafting for them and be done with it. It would be better though, if the armour could change as well to make it more interesting. Adol looking like a random dude just isn't appealing if he stays like that throughout the adventure.

1dea80  No.16385558

>>16385543

I liked Dana's crafting because it cut out all the unnecessary fat and was pretty much a linear progression system. You had "choices" in your armor selection but in the party Ys games something as little as +20 to a stat no longer carries the same weight it did in previous games and with something like the random evade stat, there was little with that stat attached to actually give you any sort of variety. Same with the accessories, I never found myself using anything that wasn't +X Skill exp or something that gave big bonuses to strength.

I'd blame armors not changing visuals on two things, the fact that there are no longer clearly defined, tiered armors and the fact that you can have 6 or 7 party members and Falcom's too lazy to have their models change with armors. Which is another thing Nayuta no Kiseki did pretty well. Oath had changing sprites but it was for full gear of the same tier, otherwise it was his normal silver/leather armor look.

1dea80  No.16385565

Also I'm fairly sure I mentioned this before, but Dana's standalone dungeons was a massive step up over anything in the party Ys games and did so many things right. Instead of three party members out at all times, you have one character that has different forms/styles, with one small skillset(it still pretty much relied on you spamming the 40 SP attack which was the most damaging, but the 1SP buff was a neat idea) that changes depending on your form, with each form having completely different attack strings, movement stats and interactions with the world, but sharing the same character, SP pool and health. It made for the best bosses and dungeons.

I think the problem started when they saw Felghana's and Origins(?) system of "let's make everyone level up until 99" and the fuckers run with it, not realising why that was a good idea in these games and what the values were supposed to be, which is a common mistake when people start focusing more on the RPG side instead of the Action side of an Action RPG, take the Tales series post Tales of Graces F. Berseria tried to correct it but despite all its flashiness, still can't be as good action-wise as Graces F. I discovered the armour chaning in Felghana as well by accident my first time when I completed the Silver set on my first playthrough and had the curiosity to experiment with the rest. I was extatic. And yes it kind fits with what you say but the moment they decided to DLC some clothes, they have no excuses left. Nayuta did it right as well.

The skills taking on a bigger role than "hard hitting artes" in same sense Tales used to use them and suddenyl they had fluctuations on Sp needed on the same character(Adol's skill no longer were in tiers of 10s to accomodate his SP gaining etc) and have secondary effects as well for no reason, as if it's trying to ape Zestiria and Berseria specifically. Some of the skills Adol has I see Eizen having. Artifacts specifically for skills isn't helping either and I can't remember an artifact like Ys7's where it powered up the more enemies you killed, where you could have a character like Adol or Geiss be super balanced and excell at everything if you put the time into it.

As for Dana's dungeons, yes you mentioned it and it's pretty much a good continuiation of the Ark and 7 idea of Adol having multiple different swords with different effects, strings and power behind them. Too bad the skills were interchangable for him but it made sense due to his final sword having that "Ten / Heaven" attribute that trumped all other rockpaper-scissors things…and I don't remember anything like that in either Celceta or Dana.

Ys 8's soundtrack never quite gelled with me because it crossed a certain threshold where a lot of songs sound like something you'd hear in a generic J-Rock anime opening. It's got something to do with the more band-like percussion and the way the piano and violins are often used. Older Ys veered more towards melodic power eurometal like Malmsteen (in fact one song in Ys IV blatantly plagiarized Far Beyond the Sun, just listen to embed related) which felt less like rocking for the sake of rocking. Kind of like the change in tone of Ys itself (or even the Trails series), it went from generic 90's fantasy anime tropes to generic modern fantasy anime tropes. I prefer the former.

8 just doesn't really stand out to me that much. VI had the interesting fusion of synth sound and traditional jdk, Origin had a more Castlevania-esque gothic sound, and Seven had a varied ethnic/tribal flavor to many of its themes in order the capture the tone of the five villages. Don't even get me started on MoC, they right butchered most of the original tracks.

983381  No.16385654

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

What's overly jarring is that while The Legend of Heroes slowly transitioned between tropes, Ys transitioned very, very abruptly. Up until Ark you could argue it's still 90s fantasy anime and I could see Adol dying his hair brown and calling himself Parn, trying to find blue haired Deedlit while powermetal banged in the background. Ys 4C and 8 just feel like what yu said, generic modern fantasy that falls flat.

The thing is, I don't know if it's because of Japan's gradual change these past few years when it comes to anime taste and what seels due to kimootas, the fact that once you gave the normalfag west the waifutrails with Sen no kiseki and Ys 4 they started thinking Ys by and large was a very waifu-centric series and followed suit to get more numbers or a combination of the two, which is the most depressing.

As far as celceta's soundtrack…I only liked vid related. And not by much compared to other games. I still prefer Ys 8's ost to Celceta's though.

Even if I bothered to compile information on some shady chinkshits, if we can't agree on extremely basic shit like Falcom's direction not looking good and them following the cancerous trends of the industry not being a good thing there's no point in bothering.

There would likely be no effort to spread it anywhere either. Who would care enough for a niche/alternative game? Who would care about my findings? Even with the entire Falcom fanbase that knew about NISA's cancer being galvanized by that email campaign, it still wasn't fucking enough apparently. If I wanted to be productive in a more useful way I'd be spreading more information about the cancer of NISA to normalfags since that's at least something basic that at least some people can agree upon and actually do something about and there's a possible hope that NISA will eventually screw up so much that Falcom fucks off from them.

Semantics were being used. I never brought them up myself, they were brought up against me because they couldn't handle that cosmetic DLC were being called microtransactions when the difference is fucking minimal. The point was fucking lost.

You're quite naive.

Mobile will never be redeemed.

When have you ever heard of an inherently predatory industry becoming more ethical and respecting of their customers over time?

When have you heard of something starting out and being inherently shit and only getting worse all the time, "miraculously" getting better out of nowhere. What we've seen is console gaming and PC gaming getting worse, and even handheld gaming in terms of practices, quality, products and all sorts of shit. What makes you think that fucking mobile gaming of all things will get better? Or even has the potential to? Your ideas won't mean shit because core gamers aren't on fucking mobile or even care about it (unless you include the niggers who play GBFG/FGO on the side or whatever, but gacha is quite literally one of the lowest things any person who plays actual games can sink to). Even the most basic niggers, one of the most cucked populations on PC (current year Blizzdrones) had enough balls to tell Blizzard to fuck off when they put Diablo's next mainline game on phones because it was a fucking insult to them. It was a disgrace. It was pathetic. Mobile is fucking cancer.

Mobile gaming won't fucking ever turn good. Nobody bought an Nvidia shield for a reason, and nobody ever will.

There's far too many problems to go into for mobile gaming, but if you think a controller input and better marketing scheme is all that's needed to redeem it you're beyond hope for understanding anything. Even if your idea has a point, businesses don't fucking care about that shit and you know it.

Sky had a tsundere MC with a NBR brother/sister crush, a lewd sadistic woman with whips, a Goku knockoff, a token loli AND evil goth loli, etc. Hell they even have the obligatory hot springs episode. They're full of SJWs. They censor nearly as much, if not as much as Google. The games on Apple's store are no less predatory, shit and cancerous than the ones on the Play store.

Near-every Falcom game that's been released in the last 18-20 years can be played on the Vita. Plus it had a lot of nice games outside of Falcom's offering. I much preferred it to my 3DS and love mine to death.

Of course, Sony violently butchered it last year so I'm protecting mine for the time being.

I've heard rumors that there's 2 new models for the Switch coming in the summer, and one is a more dedicated handheld version.

Its not the best way but I'd rather handheld gaming survive some way so I hope they do that at least. Shame that physical copies are so grossly overpriced and ugly for it though at any rate.

Fair enough. I used to call it like that until I saw it for what it is. For vidya at least. I would say a little bit of Ys Origins as well from normals a few years ago, when one of the Soulsjewtubers shilled for it as a "game as hard or harder than Dunk Souls you guys, prepare for DS3 / 4" and it had some sort of sale on steam or something.

As for the Vita, I cannot hold it in such high regard, in my conciousness, due to it being Sony's attempt at killing handheld gaming with a lot of malpractices, being Mark Cerny's playground on what not to do with handhelds / portables, having gimmicky niche games instead of just good niche games like the PSP, a lot of said games are being ported to the PC and PS4 for good reasons and due to its expensive as fuck hardware and software that is unwaranteed. And I have no desire to buy one and turn it into a hack machine and swap gigs on my memory stick. And it's on that regard alone that I hold the 3DS higher. PSP still the king.

I dunno if the redesigns are rumours anymore given that Nikkei has also reported on that but my worries are if Nintendo delivers on more than just slightly upgraded specs and actually improve some things like the cooling systems, overall architecture so it doesn't heat up like crazy etc.

People are running defence saying XSEED said the same thing in regards to CS1 but Cold Steel 1 was, by design, made for newcomers to the series and only had small nods to the other games and since it was running concurrent with Crossbell, it didnt need the crossbell games to understand what was going on. If someone leaps into 3 they get whole character arcs left out from not only CS but the other games as well.

What people should understand is that CS3 is the point where you absolutely do need all of the games to understand what's happening.

HOLY FUCK I GOT IT, I CRACKED THE CODE! I GET IT!

Forgive my sperge but here goes :

- So I at firs tI thought Monstrum Nox was some Bloodborne inspired thing for Ys given the indications but there's something else about it, especially with Adol disguising himself and with the assembly of the "monsters" he allies himself with and everyone's abiities. First, the name : Monstrum Nox is clumsy latin for "Monster Night" but what does that mean if we reverse it to its original japanese meaning? That would be Hyakki Yakkou aka "Night Parade of the Hundred Demons / Monsters".

- Second, let's try and find the japanese analogues for Adol and gang : it's Adol who has a hand that allows him to zip through and almost teleport to places, then it's Hawk who can fly and wields two swords, then it's a cat trap thing, White Cat and the cover also shows a horned nun woman and cow-like woman wielding an axe. Now, let's see :

>Nurarihyon is a yokai that can take a human appearance to tease people and cn pass through undetected and zip across places unnoticed

>Bakeneko / Nekomata is a monster cat

>Karasu-Tengu / Crow Tengu is a class of tengu, they can fly and often wield swords, staves and spears to fend off intruders

>Oni are horned monsters with great strength that can smash and devastate houses

>Ushi-oni / Gyuki is a monster Ox

Now if we apply these here, they almost line up perfectly and you could argue that perhaps Dogi, if he too becomes afflicted, could fill the Oni position but Adol who can zip through and disguises himself is Nurarihyon. The reason they appear like that is because Ys has always been a fantasy anime trope series and these are very european-based, so Adol looks like the Spardas and so on.

Essentially, Ys 9 is all about Adol's Hyakki Yakkou, which means that this is probably the most Japanese Ys has gotten. If Adol gets a katana as well, it will not only seal the deal, it'll double as a sweet Nero / Vergil reference.

94e38e  No.16411977

>>16411818

I'm pretty sure that these games have a lot more text to translate than the Neptunia games. Also, since it's a NISA port it's going to run like absolute dogshit, if at all. Once they get around to making the PC version, that is - and with NISA there's a very real chance that they will fuck it up so bad that they cancel it. Turbo mode? NISA can't even make games run normally, so that one is out of the question. If it was easy to translate Trails, you'd think that people would have done it already. The fan translations that do exist for the other Trails subseries haven't exactly been finished lightning quick.

It would be nice, certainly, but it'll be a lot of work and no fan alterations can fix a NISA port.

213e3c  No.16412126

>>16411977

Ys VIII isn't a trails game, its text amount is comparable to a more normal JRPG.

If he's referring to CS3 its pretty much fucked. It'd be a massive project, the wise thing to do would be to combine efforts with the already-existing fanslation group for Falcom games for that if something were to be done.

>no fan alterations can fix a NISA port

Not necessarily. There have been mods that fix a lot of issues for games that were pretty fucked on release, such as Nier Automata's PC release having a ton of crashes and shit like that being fixed with the FAR mod.

As someone that was dumb enough to play CS1 before any other game in the series, I had to replay it after catching up I'd say it's not a good starting point at all. Most of the story becomes meaningless babble if you don't know any of the characters or events going on before and during CS1/2. It's even worse if you never bothered playing the Crossbell games, because you would never know why/how Gurallia Fortress got vaporized, what the Azure tree was all about, or what the entire geofront section of the epilogue was for. Jumping into CS3 would be fucking insane, because by that point characters and plot lines from Sky/Zero/Ao all start coming together.

I was lucky enough to play FC and SC before CS1 (which was all that was available in English at the time) and having that knowledge did enhance the experience a lot. That said, CS1 can serve as a starting point because CS1 and 2 are pretty divorced from the other games (at least comparatively), save for the Divertissment in CS2. And I played the Divertissment before Crossbell since that wasn't an option back then and I still got the gist of it, even if I didn't know most of the characters who were name-dropped. That being said, obviously the more knowledge you have before you start CS, the more fun you have. Not knowing who Ouroboros are completely neuters some of the reveals at the end of CS1, for instance. Even still, CS is enough about it's own characters and plot that people can still get sucked into it. CS3, though…fucking no. To say nothing of the other arcs which really start to creep in to the story (though it doesn't it full Avengers fever pitch until CS4) at that point, at the very least not playing CS1 and 2 would be beyond retarded. Nu Class 7 are not nearly audience surrogate enough to justify that position. Rean is still the focus 95% of the time.

Personally I'd recommend playing Ark before Oath because the gameplay in Ark is much less refined compared to its sequels which can make it hard to go back to after Oath/Origin and also lets you appreciate the improvement in gameplay as the series goes along (until Seven)

It is incredibly easy to get the highest rank in FC. I think there's something in the ballpark of 70-something points you can miss. So no, it's not a big deal at all. A lot of people miss those quests too because they come up at a weird fucking time. And the liberl news is really just fun to read. You don't get anything for collecting all of them. Only the Carnelia books. Now in SC, you only have a margin of error of 2 (yes, singular 2) points to reach A-rank. It's worth noting that A-rank isn't even canon, though.

f23e46  No.16444084

>>16444071

Okay, that's good to know. I feel as is I have probably missed a Carnelia book considering I only have 2 chapters right now. I have been trying to explore all the content I can before progressing in the story, so missing those bracer tasks hit me hard, but they seemed pretty minor.

depends on who you talk with? some people hate it because it has the party system, some people hate it because it borrows things from the trails series, some people hate it because of the flash step/guard mechanic, and some people hate it because it's hip to hate modern anything.

I think it's a game that captured the old games feeling of adventure and aside from sahad that is a fucking shit character, every other main char is okay, the soundtrack, after the drop in quality in celceta, comes back to it's full Falcom glory and the combat is faster paced than the other 2 3d games in the series.

After more than a year of bug fixes, NisA finally got it to a stable state, though i still hear people having a horrible time with it, i personally have not seen a single bug on my playthrough the pirated version, but i wouldn't dismiss other people performance problems seeing as NisA can't never do shit right.

Also the translation is serviceable now that they redid the entire script so we don't have the area "Archeozoic Chasm" being called the "Archeozoic big hole" anymore or text only half translated.

I think i got on a tanged here, but if you want to play the game, please pirate it.

Nonono, that's not what I said or implied. I said, in the older games that only one or two girls were all over Adol's dick while the rest of the women were pre-occupied with something else. In Celceta, you had even some married women oggle Adol and in Dana you had Dana, Laxia, Sister Nia as a throwback to Dullarn's human form(yeah, sorry…Sister Nell?) and either Alison or the blacksmith lady "winking" at Adol, like bitch keep it in your pants, you have a husband. Imagine if the blacksmith lady in OiF started flirting with you while her husband was present. That's what I meant by "waifus for Adol, not the player". It's why the dual waifus in Ys7 kinda worked, with Aisha being the obvious telegraphed choice with her being a tsundere and wanting to adventure, while Tia had a mysterious affection for Adol and when she shows her true shelf as a goddess and you think it's another Feena situation, she's reluctantly evil and you fight her. Mishera, Crxie / Cruxie and Sigroon offered nothing in terms of flirting with Adol.

>It would be a solid 9/10 if the game wasn't built around flash guard.

I kinda agree with this, almost every boss felt kinda samey, even though I liked most of them (except the flying bosses).

There is that one bonus boss, that actually tricks you using flash guard but instead uses a grab move that you can't block and that takes off over half of your life, kinda wondered why they didn't do this with other bosses to keep you on your toes and make you pay attention to the bosses moves.

For those that got the true ending in VIII, what do you think of it? As far as I can tell it's fairly polarizing.

I love the theme of not being able to fight fate, which gives this Ys game a surprisingly bleak tone. That you get send back in time and every struggle and built connection you had with your companions being made completely pointless left a pretty bad taste in my mouth, though. The Lacrimosa will still happen, and trying to prevent it will destroy the balance of the universe outright. It's actually a surprisingly depressing ending.

I'm fairly sure it's the same theme as Seven's ending where there's no longer a pretermined end to society but it's now humanity's responsibility and there's no coming back from this, no reset or whatever.

"Modern Ys is a very different beast from where it started"

Ys changes with whats currently popular, you cannot expect a series not to change over 30 years.

That's not an entirely accurate statement either, Ys changes to be closer to what they viewed as their own RPG formula which they did with Ys6 and then started adapting it to their games until that was perfected as well. Ys 7 is the cut-off point for that and even then, going with an obscure way to do action games like the X-Men Legends 2 gameplay is, isn't exactly "going with what's popular". And even then, I doubt the guys at Falcom even knew about those games or Justice League Heroes which used a somewhat similar system.

I got this game recently as a birthday present. Other than the localization which goes from shoddy to just utter shit yeah have the character who's always respectable and proper say "I'm taking the L" out of the blue or another character saying "feels" memes in what's supposed to be an emotional moment, along with a boss saying "fyi" like a teen online, when said character/boss never talked like that before or after it's honestly pretty fun.

Has its flaws and feels like it was quickly cobbled together, but I still really like some of the characters and of course the music is awesome. Gameplay is so-so (wish it was snappier and quicker like Ys) but can be enjoyable depending on the quartz you have. Really wish Master Quartz did more than just increase stats, though.

I'm at the epilogue for it now, gathering the keys.

I like playing as Rion, Asuka and Sora the most. Shio is the worst character to play as even though he's my favourite male character. And I don't even dislike any of the female characters.

I unironically enjoyed Falcom's attempt at a Persona far more that Persona 4 and 5 but it fell short a bit on the gameplay part, even at 60 FPS at consoles that aren't the Vita. Kickass ost and a nice dungeon layout with a nice idea about how to mix and match elements and characters isn't exactly doing much given how slow and stat-based they decided to make the gameplay. It feels like a step forward and a step back compared to Nayuta.

Worse, they could have taken more advantage of the three party members this time, with the higher fidelity models and more closed up camera to do some Over Zenith team attacks :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgYGYtAYLS8

Especially given how the SpiCa member we get, with the wings, Rion? is exactly like Juju from OZ in personality and weapon. Here's hoping that Tokyo Xanadu 2 will capitalize on that.

I kinda wish it was a little more like Persona, in that your social stats had some effect on minor decisions and stuff throughout your daily life, maybe increasing the bond between allies if you manage to answer correctly, or get different events and whatnot.

Yeah they could've done a lot more with their setup but went with a kind of slower gameplay that still favours faster characters with faster animations. Shio takes a million fucking years to swing his sword that any opening you exploit goes away in the time he takes. I just ended up using him at range against Fire-weak enemies whenever I was forced to use him.

I doubt they'll do anything high-fidelity, at most it'll be CS3/CS4 level which is just a slight improvement in graphics. But I hope they improve the gameplay the most.

a54e8f  No.16528406

I'd rather they didn't if only because they'd be copying Persona completely at that point and erasing whatever few vestiges of Dragon Slayer and Xanadu remained beyond the name. Say whatever you want about the Kiseki series but at least it aknowledges it's a sub-series / side games to the Eiyuu Densetsu / Legend of Heroes and doesn't try to be that, even if has overturn them, just like Persona did the SMT games.

I get that rhythm, highschool-centric and waifu loaded games are now the norm for the market and it's especially marketable to otakus and non-weebs alike but I kinda miss that semi-barbaric aesthetic Xanadu used to have, even with Xanadu Next.

Yeah he appears friendly and all that but we're talking about a guy with pretender syndrome, who basically semi-took over the forum in a sly way and basically acted as a shill for his own company. It wasn't the case of a group of anons promoting their staff on their favourite forums for some P2P give-n-take, it was Tom Lipschultz, signing off with his name about what he did with the localization of the franchise and his posts often came out at a time where he worked on things, be they Ys or Akiba's trip or whatever. And the cases of supposed free time, he would take to twitter while other members who tried to grow the site or expand on the Falcom products were ignored because he would attention hog in a manner you wouldn't see directly. He did the same shit on gamefaqs as well. The man is a lying son of a bitch but damn if he isn't a good bussinessman who got a lot of suckers to buy his localized products and thank him for them as well. Some of the people eventually smelled his shit but gave up and left. Which is kind of a shame because the motherfucker stopped caring about the forum the moment he was kicked out of Xseed despite being "a very loyal Falcom fan".

First off there's no need for undubs. All the CS games have native dual audio now, which I think has been in the OP forever. They will continue to do so since NISA, if nothing else, does that. As for the mecha combat, it only shows up at the very end of the first game and it's pretty basic there. You select a body part to attack and depending on the enemy's current stance certain parts will be more weak to follow up attacks. In the sequel they add some elements by giving you some light customization of the mech's stats as well as junctioning a specific party member with you who provides different buffs…before always picking Sara because her buff is completely busted. CS3 adds multiple mechs with those elements for each one with there being more mech fights in general. CS4 keeps up the same trend.

Storywise the first two's structures are similar to the first and second Crossbell games if you've played that. You have a main "hub" that you go back to at the beginning of every chapter where you can talk to people and do some quests, and during every chapter you go to a new area in the country, and do the rest of quests there. Like TitS1, CS1 is all about building up the world and the slowly rising conflict between factions. CS2 is that conflict exploding (though one of my complaints is that I wish it exploded MORE).

So far we've seen mask dude who takes machinegun girl with him and there's fire stick princess as well but the dude seems to change clothes more than the usual for a Tales MC.

It looks good but it really is devoid of ideas and I fear it might hurt the story just like it did with Berseria, where it was just shit Berserk with prequelitis.
