EVEN IF NISA HAS THE RIGHTS TO CS3, THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN SLEEP! KEEP FIGHTING! DON'T GIVE IN!
>Latest News
-Trails of Cold Steel III has a release date set for September 24th in the US and the 26th in Europe.
-Trails of Cold Steel II for the PS4 dropped on June 4th. It features all the quality of life improvements from the PC version like turbo mode as well as extra English voice acting and dual audio. You can also transfer your data from Vita or PS3 to the game and pick up where you left off. CS1 released back in March.
-Ys IX still on track for this fall. It seems to be taking most of its pages from VIII, with more open areas and movement options.
-Kondo revealed that the Trails team has been split in two. One half will be doing preliminary work on the Calvard arc while the other will be working on an as of yet unspecified Cold Steel project. Could be DLC, could be a 3rd (5th?) style game. We should know more in the coming two weeks.
-On January 17th, 2019 NISA formally announced they had acquired the rights to the Trails series (and likely has had them for some time) and would be releasing Cold Steel 3 in fall of 2019 for the PS4 (no other platforms have been announced so far). In an attempt of damage control it was announced Brittany "Hatsuu" Avery, Ryan Thompson and Kris Kniggev (all veterans of XSeed's work on the CS series) had been contracted to work on the game to ensure script accuracy, do translation work and, in Hatsuu's case, manage the VAs and dub (Sean Chiplock has already been confirmed as returning as Rean and at this point several others have announced their return as well). This is probably been the biggest fear of the Falcom General for a while and it's here now. NISA's play here is pretty smart and a good portion of the initial outrage was quelled by these staff announcements. For now the best course of action will be to gather information and watch NISA very closely for when they release content from the translation (like screenshots or trailers). Collecting info from NISA's past deeds is also a good plan, but keep in mind it will be difficult to make much headway with that alone until we can show they're fucking up this translation too thanks to their insulation via the stunt hires. Being attentive and vigilant is your best course of action here.
-Ys IX: Monstrum Nox was revealed. It is the furthest game in the Ys timeline and will release in fall of 2019.
-The PC versions of Cold Steel 1 and 2 had dual audio patched in, so as long as you are able to update your game an undub is no longer necessary if you want to play it with Japanese audio.
-On the same day, October 26th, both Tom Lipschultz and Brittany "Hatsuu" Avery left XSeed. Hatsuu has since gone freelance and was hired by NISA to work on Cold Steel 3.
- As of this posting Trails of Cold Steel 4 has been out for numerous months in Japan, so obviously the whole game is spoiled. Try to keep things behind spoilertext here.
- The Switch port of Ys VIII released with a litany of bugs, including not even having dual audio (NISA's sole claim to fame) at launch.
- After an email campaign, a retranslation, apologies, and 7 months of delays, Ys 8 finally got released on PC. And NISA fucked up, the port is so terrible that only 51% of the Steam reviews being positive (it was originally at 25%, but shills will shill).
- Also available on PC: the Trails in the Sky trilogy (now with Turbo mode), Xanadu Next, Ys: I & II Chronicles, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin, Ys SEVEN, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2, Zwei!! 1 and 2
>Fan-translations
>Trails from Zero at 80%+ (being edited by Geofront/Zerk). There is already a beta (as in a rough translation done before Zerk even started working on it) out, though the quality is on the low side, though still coherent from start to finish
>Trails to Azure was leaked. There are a few typos and every once in a while there's an awkward line or two but all in all it's a solid translation. https://www.romhacking.net/translations/3679/. Flame's edit of the translation is also out officially now. It's a better worded script at the cost of pretty much breaking the voice mod. Both are available packaged with torrents if you care to look for them.
>Everything else in the works seems to be MIA.

FC and Zero are the only good games in this entire franchise.
The overarching plot is basically non-existant.
Ouroboros is cringe and the writers are making it up as they go.

Not exactly a revelation here. It's become pretty obvious that you either liked Cold Steel or you didn't and that's your future with Trails, either you like it or you don't because it's not going to appeal to you at all.
I should stop hoping the next Ys is anything more than a 20 hour timesink for a week that will then be forgotten.

Meanwhile, the japanese are far more displeased with Tifa's entire design not being anime enough, like FFX which is the perfect balance of SE's "realistic animu" design as some feel and rightfuly bitch about that : >>16583555 That however is an all too different issue from "Oh, they reduced her milkers", they fucking made her look like Asian 90s Jennifer Conelly. The woman she was based off. I feel for the nips since the best artstyles for me where from FFX translating Nomura's art almost perfectly in a charming way, something only FF9 did with Itahana's previously and Dissidia. This super-ultra realistic EKS DEE style they've been flaunting ever since fucking FFXV(not Versus XIII) has been a cancer on the graphics and the artistic vision. That I can sympathize with and it's a larger problem but goons and plebbittors focus on "LEL TITS", putting the loaded cart in front of the dead horse they helped rape and kill like the fagots they are.

Also, is RPG Site considered credible? They did a piece on the CS3 E3 demo, more or less saying they were concerned going into it because of Nisa's past fuckups, but thought everything seemed fine with the translation so far. I mean, based on what I heard from the leaks I can't find any problems either, but I wasn't sure on their reputation.

I'm still slightly pissed they purged some stuff from downloads due to server issues(I think space and change?) don't host avi videos of the cutscenes, wallpapers from the games or exclusive japanese artwork like other sites did back in the day(like Bluelaguna.net). Other than that, beyond their bias on RPG reviews(shocker, I know!) I've not heard of anything really bad or drama worthy from them.
Now, I get that Ys doesn't have a great big fanbase and it's always just 5 guys talking abou it but how come nobody has ever attempted to make an Ys combo mad video.Tales of Zestiria and Berseria are equally exploitive in their battle systems yet prople constantly try to make them.

The have a lot of NISA shills usually all over the comment sections but they're ultimately alright. I dont trust the demo NISA gave them because they know they're under scrutiny. They'll give them a demo that has work done to it in order to send the journos out to preemptively damage control for them. The fanbase then believes the journos and get more obnoxious in their defense of NISA.
If it is all genuine and it isnt all fucked up then fine. I'll eat my hat, but I'll still buy the game used on principal for all the games they did fuck up and for the people who lost consoles because of them.

Isn't it a remix of To Make the End of Battle? Some riffs remind me very heavily of it after the 0:40 mark. It might just be the signature riff of Ys though, just like how the Dynasty Warriors games and many offshoots of them have a signature riff in their themes inserted in them by MASA.

Those are the "hardcore" PC gamers you are thinking of. The average PC gamer in japan has a potato capable of running most of their doujin games, like Hikae Mitsurugi Kamui, that Megaman game with Valkyries instead etc and the never-ending flow of Visual Novels. Though with less and less games appearing at the festivals and instead popping up on steam instead, I guess the PC player base will be dominated by VNs again. Falcom stopped trying after they released the updated Felghana patches for the PC with the PSP extras and never bothered with Ys7 on the PC until years later. Back in the day, they even held an interview with how the PSP was their ideal console since it was the closest thing to the kind of PCs they were working with for their games and fit their styles. Then the Vita happened and they moved to PS4.
>>16605581
Yeah, unfortunately that ain't gonna be the case. Apart from Cow knocking enemies back, we still have the problem with super weak looking skills that are only there to cut chunks of enemy HP while the enemies are semi-immortal sponges who don't show pain.

The way I see it, if they're going with the tiered weapons again, every tier of weapon should add an attack or an effect to the existing combo string, and skills should be a small amount, 6 at the very most, focused around buffs, debuffs and things that you wouldn't be able to do with your regular attack set that isnt "Deal burst damage". I liked the idea of Dana's dragon spirit buff a lot. It was undercooked and underused, but the idea was going somewhere.
Or they could go the Nayuta no kiseki route where skills are additional special extensions to your moveset while you get ranged spells as an additional attack, and a final special set of abilities unlocked by the story that allow movement abilities or additonal combat abilities. I think Nayuta pulled it off extremely well and I wonder why they never tried it for Ys post Seven.

I agree with the combo string but the skills…I think Adol had the perfect round up of not only variety but also number of skills in Ys7. And they were simple, Adol could be well rounded and covered lots of areas. When they changed him and some of his skills, it just brings the game down a bit because he should be the tried and true character, the perfect all rounder with wide options and the others should be ripe for experimenting. Fewer skills but they are buffs? Sure. Skills with special effects? Go for it. Just not Adol and his skills shouldn't have effects either, being neutral and usable everywhere even at the cost of slightly reduced damage. Dana showed potential at what the side characters can do with theor unique set-ups.
You are kinda getting your wish though as initially I thought each character would be like parts of Nayuta's expanded traverse system but it seems the party shares some travel actions and they are a bit nerfed. For the game to be successful with abilities that allow for aditional movement and combat abilities, Falcom would have to go back to a more Felghana-ish formula and have more platforming with Adol only, doesn't matter if they keep the skills or not.

I disagree. Almost all of adol's skills I remember from Seven dealt nothing but burst damage or multiple damage ticks in a very short time, and the only two I used by endgame were Pentagram because it's arguably the best attack in the entire game, and aerial slash(the one where he spins upwards) to skip some of the later water temple areas because Seven as a game feels like it goes on for an eternity.

I took the time to actually level up Adol's moves by endgame, even using the corresponding swords to gain two SP each use and by the end it was pretty satisfying to use a lot of the moves. Video related has a guy with Adol's skills around level 6 or 7 and even then, they pack quite a punch and can push or launch enemies which, with a little creativity can go a long way, especially now that they have jumps and I assume kept the jump cancelling from YsVsSNK, where Adol could follow up from Aerial Thrust. I may be wired differently though since I saw other things on Ys7's battle system at the time and now.
Forgot to say that the tiered weapon idea is nice since it harkens back to Ark with the weapon upgrades making the special abilities better and faster each time.

It's not like Falcom couldn't have done something to lessen the grind at the time but they did fix it with YsVsSNK since now skills only had three levels but level3 was Ys7's level10/Max and they could have it be like that to lessen the grind a lot more in future games and show a clear evolution of the move. They semi-did it with Nayuta's magic attacks but then they went back to how it was in Celceta.

I'm not a fan of it. I really hated in Celceta and I felt it ruined 90% of the soundtrack. Dana had better synth in my opinion, especially in the beach OST and Nox feels more akin to the Celceta type.
I'm not a fan of this guitar/synth duality. I liked the classic game's/origin guitar/violin duality instead, like what you can find with the intro music or the remix for Scarlet Tempest.

Where did these rumours spread from? Abe has never made any "breeding propaganda" or anything to do with NEETs. He simply wanted to reduce families' burden of raising children while stabilizing the population number to around 100 million for the next decades. If anything. that means he is aiming to reduce the population.

It's fairly similar. It has superficial differences in the school setting and such. Gameplay-wise not a whole lot has changed since Sky. Probably the biggest difference is that orbments have been simplified in Cold Steel. It used to be that different sepith counts from the passive quartz you put into your orbment would determine what arts you could do. So like…Movement 1 was worth two wins, ect, and once you had three total winds in an art line you coul do airstrike. Things like that. That's changed to just being tied to master quartz as well as specific quartzs.
In game of story loop, Cold Steel 1 is kinf of a combination of Sky and Crossbell's methods. In Sky the story is basically a roadtrip. Each chapter takes place in a different region in the same country centered around a specific city. You have job requests to do, just like Cold Steel, as well as a main plot. Crossbell all takes place in one big citystate where you have access to the whole map every chapter, so you get to know specific NPCs a lot better in that game. in Cold Steel, you spent half your time in Trista and the rest on the road. Cold Steel 2 is different, but I don't want to spoil how. Cold Steel 3 play like CS1 again and CS4 is like an expanded version of CS2.

I just started playing Nayuta and at the beginning of the game it says that it takes place in 1579 (N.S).
TitS: FC takes place in S.1202.
Are the years counted differently in Nayuta, or does it really take place 300 years in the future?

It hasn't though. Anon, people have been picking apart Nayuta for years. The best you can get out of it is "maybe." But there is no real proof it takes places in the Zemuria we know, much less in the future. In fact, given things learned in CS4 it could easily be some kind of alternate world or a different thing entirely. So no, Nayuta is not necessarily canon. This isn't a "because I said so" thing. This is a "there is no concrete evidence to confirm it" thing.

I don't believe it.
Strategic Zone sounds pretty subdued for what seems like the raid mission music. Unless it's the setup.
Crossing A/A Sounds like a boss music and it's pretty fucking good too, especially considering the other boss tracks from the previous three.
Welcome To Choas looks like the boss theme for the pistol girl's own dungeon, and it's fucking great too, the boss tracks are excellent.
Tranquil Silence is nice, and so is Adol in a cloak.
Dreaming in the Grimwald is pretty good for what seems to be a stage theme.
The rest I didn't care much for. Invitation to the crimson night reminds me very much of a TitS track, but I can't put my finger on which one.

The time on optional quests passes when you talk to someone in a story related quest.
So if the time for the quest is short and you talk to a main plot person, the time runs out for the optional quests.
But other times it doesn't run out immediately, so that's something to keep in mind.
The length of time is a bit iffy in the TitS games.

>The backs of two characters related to the future of the series are shown on the cover of the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation. It is speculated that the girl is a character from one of the in-game novels due to the large stuffed animal she is holding.
>The project began with the development of a new game engine. The graphics are also being enhanced.
>It may be difficult to see in screenshots, given the fact that they are printed on paper, but the characters and background scenery are quite upgraded from The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV ~The End of Saga~.
>The situations and characters shown in the screenshots are meant to be hints regarding the next title.
>This new title is meant as a followup or spin-off-style game. Since the Crossbell characters have appeared, many people might think, “What about that person?” So it is a game that will show things like, “What did that person do at that time? What were they doing after?”
>Kondo also answered the question of whether previous entries in the Trails series would come to PlayStation 4, or if there were any plans to develop more Evolution titles (enhanced re-releases of older titles).
>“Us too, don’t like the fact that options to play our past works disappear with time,” Kondo said. “I like to believe our games are timeless, but consoles change over time. Due to that, we want to leave an option to play them in some way. The Trails series, especially, will continue on still, so it will be nice to be able to look back on past titles. Right now, we want to prepare something that can be played on PlayStation 4, so we’re working on something behind the scenes.”
>Kondo continued, “If we’re talking about a simple port, it wouldn’t be very hard at all, but if the graphics rendering method changes, then it becomes fairly difficult.”
>Finally, he said, “I want to promise to deliver something in some form.”

Yes for both. They are not excellent, but if you were fine with Nayuta then it should be a similar experience. You can find both on nyaa (sadly not pantsuu but the other one). They come bundled with the evo voice patch even. I reccomend playing it windowed with borderless gaming, though, to eliminate the annoying flashing that sometimes happens. Also maybe joy to key so you can set the shift button to something on a controller, which works as a poor man's turbo mode.

Here's some questions from that interview:
>BC: While we’re talking about future plans, can we expect for any Falcom titles to release on next-gen platforms as early as 2020, or will you and your team continue to support current-gen platforms moving forward?
>TK: It’s a difficult question, but we have typically been focused on where our fans are. Historically, we are one of the last companies to release games on PC Engine [known as TurboGrafx-16 here in the west], and we did so because our core fans moved to that platform. However, now we are seeing a tendency where the fans in Japan will stick to older hardware longer, while the fans in the west will jump on new hardware as soon as it comes out. For us, it’s getting difficult to gauge where our fans are actually playing. Internally, we are constantly studying what is coming in the future so that we can be ready for when it releases.
>BC: That makes sense, especially since the Trails of Cold Steel series is now making the move over to the PlayStation 4, is that right?
>TK: Yes, that’s right. Particularly, at least from our perspective, JRPG fans typically play on PlayStation platforms. It’s important for us to do what we can as a developer to reach our fans. Within our head office and ourselves, we are always trying to boost up that fanbase on a platform so that we don’t have to focus too many internal resources on porting, and we can focus on making new games.
>BC: I can understand that. Looking back, the PSP and PS Vita housed some of the best Falcom RPGs and the mobility of the consoles played a huge roll in that. What are your thoughts about the Switch now that Falcom titles have been released on the Nintendo hardware, and would you ever think to release games exclusively to the console?
>TK: When it comes to the Switch, we recognize the system’s dual functionality, our games really match these mobile platforms especially for players who might not have access to their own personal televisions. Being able to play our games whenever a fan wants, is something appealing to us and to the fans. In terms of exclusivity, as nice as it would be, the truth of the matter is finding where the user base is. When it comes to Ys VIII, we released it on Switch. While western sales for the Switch version were right around where we thought they’d be, the game struggled in Japan, which reinforced to us that our user base is on PlayStation.
>BC: Did Falcom handle the Switch port for Ys VIII?
Alan Costa: Our head office in Japan made a deal with them and handled the port. NISA does not have an in-house development team, so that was all done in Japan.
>TK: In a practical sense, we have never actually developed a game on Switch, so that would take us a large number of resources and have us starting from zero, which would take time away from developing games. So, we leave the porting to our partners. There’s a misconception in Japan from fans, that there’s bad blood between Nintendo and Falcom, but that’s not the case at all. We’d love to have more of a working relationship with them, but we don’t have the means to develop on the platform.
>BC: This wouldn’t be a western Falcom interview unless we asked if there are plans to localize Zero no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki in the west, at this point, I’m sure a PC port will suffice?
>TK: So, that’s something that I have heard for years now and the truth is that this time the only way to play those games is on outdated hardware. As creators, we want as many people as possible to play these games, and also to give Japanese players a chance to replay them. Although there isn’t anything to officially announce there, we are working internally to figure out how to get these games on newer consoles and once we do, I’m confident that NISA will translate them for you and release them in the west.
>BC: Would you consider this to be the best time for new players to jump into the Trails of Cold Steel series?
>TK: We’ve had this discussion internally recently, which brought up questions that gamers ask such as, “I’ve been hearing about this series for so long, but can I start here?” Well, because this series is story-focused, we had to think carefully about how to do that. So, to alleviate that, we have included a detailed story summary within the game. This doesn’t only tell the story of Trails of Cold Steel either, we are talking about characters from all over The Legend of Heroes series. Even players who are familiar with the series could enjoy this because it catches them up on characters that they might have forgotten about.

That's hardly sufficient. Of course it would be good to have a short summary for players to remember what's been going on but you can't start Trails from the third Cold Steel and it wouldn't be suitable to start from the first CS either. Fuck.

Zero has rough moments. You'll usually at the very least be able to use context to figure out every line of dialogue, but some you have to linger on. Like, for instance, Tio refers to Rixia as a "transistor glamour" when she first meets here, a word that was complete nonsense to me. I looked it up and apparently it's basically Japanese slang for a short stack. You come across weird and literal shit sometimes. You'll always know what's going on but some of it is very rough. Ao is overall much better. But yeah, I recommend them just fine if you really want to play Crossbell. I used them and there's no telling when Geofront will be done. A lot of people lately have bit the bullet and just played the fan translations because CS3 is coming out soon and Crossbell is more or less required reading for the second half of Cold Steel.

Because it was a leak of the 2015 build that was really only partially done. Everything is translated but it's translated very roughly in some places. Geofront picked it up and was trying, more or less, to bring it close to something XSeed would have done, but someone leaked the 2015 build two years ago (Geofront still isn't done even now) so it's the best people have. Do you want to know the sad thing? It's honestly more than XSeed ever did to try and promote Falcom games. That's what pisses me off the most. NISA flew Kondo over, gave him contact with the western fanabse for pretty much the first time ever, had him answer questions. They've been promoting the game non-stop for months. At XSeed, it always felt like there were three people in the company who really wanted to push the games and no one else really gave a shit. Those three people did amazing things, but the company itself never seemed to care.
In the end I'm not shocked Kondo feels the way he does about NISA. To him, he's never seen market support like this before. People actually trying to promote him and the product and brand by actual events and promotions, rather than a few token tweets and a poorly edited trailer the day before launch,
I've seen enough of CS3's script to be confident in saying the translation is a fairly clear step down. It's not unpatched Ys 8 bad, but the wording is definitely more literal and clunky than what XSeed used to do. I only wish XSeed had NISA's marketing. Maybe this never would have happened if they did.

I honestly doubt it. Ys 8 had no memes, it was just clunky as fuck and then later patched to be sort of clunky. And there's nothing really for them to censor. They more or less already said this. No, I think it will just sound worse in general. Based on what I've seen, probably not enough to trigger any kind of outrage sadly, though there's always the chance it'll be tucked away in places we haven't seen, but based on what I saw when I played Ys 8 I doubt it.

Ys 8 had no problems…on PS4 that is. So I doubt the PS4 release of CS3 will have them. Every other port had at least one thing if not multiple things wrong with it, of course. The best you can hope for is that NISA, in attempting to more or less shamelessly copy what XSeed has done (like they did by adding turbo mode into CS3, where it wasn't before), will just give the PC port straight to Durante, if they do one that is.

A total cultural shift, the Japanese are notoriously PC retarded. Soyny is probably gonna force them to start, but they'll likely make a last stand for consoles on the Switch first.
>And if NISA has all this money why can't they have a competent PC porting department?
They don't need to. Like you mentioned if you have X amount of money to spend on a product, it is better spent on advertising than on making sure the product is good.
Also don't count on NIS dying and taking out NISA. Soyny has mentioned wanting to buy studios, i guess to force people to stay on their platform, and i fully expect they would buy NIS and through them NISA to keep this cancer alive until Soyny kicks the bucket as well.

Sure, but in most cases, it's Japanese companies working under Nippon Icchi. In most cases they hired Laurel Code and/or Entertainment Support to de the PC ports. It's a well known fact ES Inc. is a subdivision of Nippon Icchi themselves. Laurel Code seems unrelated, but yet again they're a Japanese company.

I'm conflicted anons, Kondo doesn't seem willing to let go of NISA now, Xseed went to shit and other localization companies are probably not that interested. Its funny to see a youtube video about someone talking about trails and which order to play, and there's so many views. I'm in a bubble separate from all these communities, its weird to see things organically grow with you not knowing anything about it, having so many "fans" coming to a game like this. How did it happen? When did this game get popular in the West? People played persona and then those communities find and latch on to other jrpg's? I like too many things that I don't really jump into communities I guess, its too much to "be a part of something" when I played dozens of games at a time. Not that I ever browse leddit, or other forums, it just hit me that someone can make a video about an obscure game like this and you have people coming out of nowhere giving praise.

So after playing Oath in Felghana, Ark of Naphistim and Ys: Origin, those became some of my favorite games of all time.
Ys Chronicles was a unique experience. 7/10, a bit unpolished, but it was a quick fun experience.
Then now I just played Celceta. It was complete dogshit and it made me fall out of love with the series. What was once a fast paced streamlined arpg is now a slow clunky grindfest. They completely removed the verticality and instead added a clunky party system. There's an arbitrary sidequest for the best artifact in the game that requires you to literally wallhug the entire map. Getting gear and upgrading it is a huge grind now, but 99% of upgrades are irrelevant since the game is a breeze on nightmare with just a few life leech upgrades. Then the game adds stupid grindable permanent stat increase items that completely throw off the balance of the game. Not to mention you can walk into any fight with 99 of every consumable and cheese it.
If the bosses weren't boring cakewalks to begin with, anyone can just grind their way out of it instead of learning the mechanics, which to me defeats the entire purpose of Ys games.
Do any of the other new games get any better, or are they all as dogshit as celceta?

I'd say 12 bucks is an okay price for it. I certainly wouldn't pay more. It's a shameless Cold Steel asset reuse and it's pretty obvious the game was made in like 9 months, but it's still scratches the Falcom itch. Be aware though, the localization is awful. It starts out okay but starting in Chapter 5 things start to really break down. There's a lot of memey shit in there and it's cringy as fuck. This is just a small sample, I have lots more. I was surprised when I played it and Ys 8 back to back that Aksys by far did the worse job. I was prepared for NISA to easily take the crown, but whoever was doing this game did not give a fuck. There's plenty of typo too. There's some stuff to like in there, yeah, but definitely not for more than 12 bucks.

Pretty much. Lacrimosa makes up for it with a compelling story/characters and shittons of content(I mean it's neat you have all this shit but the side quests are still mmo fetch quests, even if you get to know more about the characters through them, and the raid/interception missions get old real quick) but the gameplay itself still feels wonky.
Whats funny is that in Lacrimosa you can find a very fun optional dungeon that shows what this style of Ys game could have been. You play as one character switching between weapons and forms, every weapon shares the same four skills but different variations of it, you have different defense/health/movespeed stats, a seperate attack string for each form as well as a special interaction with the world for certain puzzles. I really loved it and I hope Ys9 has an equivalent dungeon to it, preferably larger since the dungeon is pretty linear, and fairly short.
Celceta is arguably the worst of the three but if you hated the fundamentals I doubt Seven/Lacrimosa is going to do much for you.

Just to expand a little example wise
Seven
>The "hardest" of the three, but still not on par with Origins/Felghana
>No flash move, but flash guard is a very primitive version that needs to be spammed multiple times for multiple frames of an attack(and you'll be mashing it for a solid minute if it's a tornado type attack too).
>Bosses are dangerous and move around a lot, designed around an arena like the older Ys games. The downside is because they're testing out the party system and the consumables a lot of bosses will outright one shot a character or stick the other two party members on 1 hp 5 seconds into the fight.
>First time they also experimented with lots of alternate weapons and materials, there's shittons of them but it's a chore actually bothering with them, especially for the ultimate weapons which require an ass-shatteringly long time to grind because the material required for it is a somewhat uncommon drop from both monsters and resource nodes.
>SP generation is fucked, you get like 12(after an upgrade) or 6 SP per charged attack and you have to hold down the attack button instead of it being charged automatically for you.
>no jump button, but aerial slash breaks later dungeon progression since it can be used as a jump button.
>a big fuck you with the final boss since it requires use of all seven characters, but there's no guarantee you went into it having leveled, geared up or even used all seven characters(I personally hated mustafa).
>skills are ten levels, mostly damage increases but certain levels give you different effects(in other words it adds more visual shit to the attack but otherwise not impressive)
Celceta
You've played this, you know
Lacrimosa
>Jump button,, too bad it isn't used much in fights or in movement. My use for it was going fast because sprinting+jump makes you go slightly faster
>The party member rock-paper scissors mechanic gets expanded on by having damage types inflict "break" on an enemy
>broken enemies take lots more damage and lose an attribute like flight or no stunlock, basically it's to kill the larger fucks quicker because once they're broken they die quickly
>no retarded fast travel restriction system
>bosses are basically like Lacrimosa, they're a big ass monster in a circular arena that swipes at you every now and then and you can flash guard/move through the entire moveset with no problem. There's a gimmick boss that involves a somewhat wonky catapult and underwater physics but otherwise, meh.
>Weapon system streamlined into tiers. The attribute system is still a thing
>no currency, you trade materials for everything. It's less annoying than Seven's.
>adds in interception/raid missions, basically quick combat encounters where you are defending a gate or attacking enemy spawn points. Interception missions are long and when they get difficult they get so by virtue of damage spongy enemies. Raid missions buff your attack to absurd levels when you're near torches so they end in under 3 minutes flat
>skills follow the same deal as Celceta, three levels, the way skills are acquired makes it feel much more reliable than celceta but otherwise it still feels very much like you get a skill to supercede another skill and the final ability you get from a certain sidequest line pretty much renders everything else obsolete, especially for Adol. You get certain exceptions here and there like ricotta's spinning ability that fills the break bar incredibly quickly but otherwise it's static
>party members play a bit more differently, with Hummel's rifle and Ricotta being a bouncy rocket every fight, but Adol and Dana are pretty much different skins of each other and Laxia is basically Karna with more thrust attacks than throw attacks.
I'd say try Lacrimosa it's playable on PC with a smooth 60 outside of three areas, eroded valley(drops to like a 35) and the later Dana dungeon stages when it comes to using Luminous for a couple of hours and if you can't stand it then drop it. Honestly I like Kiseki no Nayuta more as a potential followup to Ys.

I don't actually mind the rock paper scissors system, but the big problem for me was how they turned a finely tuned, skill based, low grind experience into a slogfest like every other rpg. Sad to see Falcom didn't realize they had lightning in a bottle. Is there any chance its worth going back to play the old pre-remake versions of the games?

>skills are ten levels, mostly damage increases but certain levels give you different effects(in other words it adds more visual shit to the attack but otherwise not impressive)
Not quite true. Adol is the one with the most impressive changes as his skills at later levels almost slow down time to show Adol's inhuman speed, like how Pentagam level 1 has Adol move fast but everything moves fairly normal but by level 10, Adol moves fast, time stands still, the damage explodes and the area of effect has been expanded a bit due to the upgraded visuals. It's mostly the other characters that get a bit of a shaft with their skills being non impressive at later stages. My guess is because Adol has to juggle between three sword types, getting the magic sword of ultimate penis enlargement aka "Fuck your rock-paper-scissors shit" Sword and because he has to solo the final boss.
While not in complete agreement about its follow-up, Nayuta still has tremendous potential and is probably the best starting point for Capcom or anyone for that matter to see how a proper 3D Megaman is done, specificcaly of the X / Zero / ZX timeline.

Bumping this thread with the scans from this month's Dengeki PlayStation, introducing 5 new characters and new systems. Falcom also posted on their Twitter the Falcom shop's exclusive pre-order item, a microfiber cloth featuring the map of the game's setting, Balduq.
https://gematsu.com/2019/07/ys-ix-monstrum-nox-introduces-five-new-characters-new-systems-and-map-of-balduq
http://archive.fo/8CvcB
Here's the descriptions for characters and systems from that article:
>Characters
>Commander Chatelard (voiced by Yuuki Ono) – Commander of the Church Knights. A handsome man with tanned skin and silver hair. His position coupled with his appearance has earned him popularity in the city. A battle between him and Hawk will carefully unfold.
>Warden Berger (voiced by Takahiro Shimura) – A military man with excellent judgment ability and is unsparing to the Monstrum. Although impulsive, he also does things properly, and while he has no hair left on his head, he does have the deep trust of his subordinates.
>Examiner Ingrid (voiced by Natsuko Hara) (pictured in the above screenshot, via Falcom) – A woman dispatched from the Romun Empire. An excessive realist, she is thickheaded and tries not to believe in rumors and superstitions.
>Marious (voiced by Shuuta Morisaki) – An amnesia-stricken and friendly young man who was imprisoned, and is capable in both action and insight. His memory loss will be the key to the story.
>Margot (voiced by Kujira) – A resistance leader from the Gllia area. What is her objective in getting through to the prisoners?
>Systems
>Boost and Extra Skill – By pressing R1 + L1 during battle, you will enter the “Boost” state, which increases your ability, the damage you deal (as well as lowers enemy damage), movement speed, and the number of combo attacks you can land. Additionally, by pressing R1 + L1 in this state, you can activate your “Extra Skill,” which is a unique special move that ends the Boost state. To enter the Boost state, you must fill up a gauge that builds up by landing standard attacks and taking enemy damage.
>Larva Battles – A dark miasma can be found in various places throughout the game. By touching it, your surroundings will become monotone and a battle will commence. By winning this battle, you will build up your Nox Gauge, which is necessary for “Grimwald’s Night” to occur. There are also hidden, high-difficulty Larva.
>Grimwald’s Night – Occurs when the Nox Gauge reaches its maximum amount. The Monstrum gather in a different dimension where they must defeat countless Larva. The battle will end when all Larva have been defeated. This will also cause barriers in the city to disappear, expanding your range of actions. This system is based on the Raid and Beast Raid systems of the previous game, but brushed up and equipped with elements unique to this game. You will also receive bonuses based on your score and cooperation with Monstrum outside of your party.
There's a little more detail regarding the characters in this article:

I just finished Nayuta no kiseki.
It was pretty good and it only took me around 35 hours to complete, pretty short for a trails game.
Now the biggest question is: Does it fit in with the timeline?
Going by what happens in the story, and this article https://archive.fo/YjivU that suggest Nayuta takes place before TitS FC, Nayuta is most likely a prequel.
There are some nudges here and there that sort of references events and what not to the mainline trails games, but it feels like trying to make a connection is grasping at straws.
Spoiler: I would say the spoiler image 1 is the most conclusive proof that Nayuta does not take place during the events of TitS. The planetarium gave me some Aureole vibes.

The fuck is wrong with the graphics in this game?
The hub-world has constant pop-ups, huge framerate-issues (despite only there being like 6 people on the streets).
It's not exactly a graphically intense game and there isn't even an excuse a la "well it's a vita-port", this game honest to god runs like shit right now.
And those Adol-prison-parts are a fucking chore.
Also compared to the vivid wilderness from Ys VIII Balduq is just boring to look at, with all the grey.
At least it's far more fun to travel around in the overworld in 9. I also like the chuuni-gothic aesthetic.
So far (I just unlocked chapter VI), this game is rather unimpressive compared to LoD, though.

The newest patch fixed some performance issues, so it runs better now. Not sure what they fucked up since I remember 8 running just fine. I think the game keeps getting better as it goes on. I'm not sure I'll end up liking it as much as 8 in the end, but the more I play the more I enjoy it. The prison sections are pretty boring though.

Ys 9 pc when?
>>16766688
Is the gameplay better than LoD or does it still have the same "big monster with sweeping attack and AoE attack" boss design like every fucking boss in that game?
What about the music?

>Is the gameplay better than LoD
The bosses did feel different in many ways from 8 and seem to have a little more variety to them. They may be more enjoyable to you, but I think on the whole if you really didn't like 8 then 9 may not be for you either since the core gameplay is quite similar. Still the same party system with slash/pierce/crush weaknesses and skill spamming, still has flash move/guard. I've seen some people who didn't like 8 say 9 is way better, but I like them both pretty equally, they are both good in different ways to me. The music is quite good, pretty typical Falcom stuff. The songs for the outside areas are especially nice.

I liked 8, just not as much as the Ark-engine games and the bosses were a severe letdown, especially the final boss which felt like a chore. Seven was mediocre and I've never got 2 hours into Celceta, but 8 was nice and the Dana-only dungeons were really good, and I had hoped 9 would also improve. Glad to hear it is.

Trying to get LoH 3 to run on Windows 7 is a fucking nightmare. What the fuck is going on? I set it all correctly by what Falcom said in pic related. 256 colors, 640x480 res, and yet I get color problems. Anyone got these problems while trying to run other Japanese games? My guess is that something is still fucked in my color settings but I don't know what.

It's probably some DirectDraw problem. Try using a DirectDraw wrapper like DXGL.

Yes, and nothing is different. I still don't know what to do. And if I use compatibility from the properties it holds DXGL back and the wrapping doesnt happen.

You could also try another wrapper, like dgVoodoo2.
To use it, you have to delete your profile for the game in DXGL.
Then extract the content of …\dgVoodoo2_62_3.zip\MS\x86\ to the folder with the exe of the game.
Also extract dgVoodoo.conf and dgVoodooCpl.exe to that folder.
With dgVoodooCpl.exe you can configure the wrapper. Then just start the game normally.

I just installed it on a virtual machine running Windows 7 and there it was working fine, too.
Here is how I installed the game both times:
- Unpacked the zip file with 7-Zip. (I used 32bit 7-Zip, started with locale emulator, to preserve Japanese characters. However the only file with Japanese characters was an html document, so this shouldn't make a difference.)
- Create a folder named "Application Data" in "C:\Users\[My Name]\".
- Create a folder for the game at the desired location.
- Run the setup with locale emulator as admin. I selected all three boxes.
- Run the shortcut from the desktop with locale emulator.

Yep. It is a gpu thing. I turned off anisotropic filtering and antialiasing and now this is the result without any wrappers. The only problem is the auto mark on the south western side of the screen. Unlike my first attempts in the video >>16778457 it looks better color wise. I'll have to check the Nvidia panel even further.
