Valve appears to have given up on the game entirely.

As somebody who doesn't play card games, I must ask what happened with Artifact. It had a large 60+k userbase on launch, but dips into the double digits now.

>As somebody who doesn't play card games, I must ask what happened with Artifact

It made many mistakes and tried to badger its way into a market that is already tiring of digital CGs like Hearthstone and Shadowverse. Basically, if a company makes a CG, there are two ways to handle it: be a trading card game (Magic: The Gathering, Force of Will), or be a living card game (Netrunner). The major difference is that in a TCG, your cards are yours to do with as you please, and you can trade or cash out at any time. The company keeps a steady stream of revenue by releasing new sets of cards. An LCG is more like a board game: buy it once, and you get every card, and you use those to build your decks rather than booster packs/buying from second party stores. The company makes money by releasing new sets of cards, but each is only a one-time purchase.

Artifact had sort of a hodge-podge of both models, which satisfied no-one.

>game is $20 up front

>>but it isn't an LCG, because you only get basic cards with your initial purchase, and you can still buy booster packs

>the only way you can acquire new cards is from buying them on the Steam marketplace (which gives Valve a cut), or from buying booster packs, which are completely random

>the only way you can participate in ranked online matches or drafts is by paying real money to enter them

There isn't any form of in-game currency, like Hearthstone's gold, earnable through playing. If you want more cards or anything beyond a casual match (which I believe you can only do with Steam friends), then you need to pay every time with real money.

This is, of course, to say nothing of the gameplay. I haven't looked at much of it myself, but the impression I've gathered from people who did play it is that it's too complicated for its own good.

>five colours of cards

>several types of cards like heroes, minions, enhancements, etc.

>each turn has multiple phases, for minions to spawn in, to buy items, and to actually play cards or attack

>you manage this clusterfuck of information across three boards, each of which will probably look radically different

>just like a real ASSFAGGOTS, you can make some bad decisions early on and spend the next half hour trying to claw your way back in to the game only to lose to a factor outside of your control

Many card games have "soft" game enders, like Force of Will's J-Ruler God Arts, which are prohibitively expensive, but win the game and prevent stalling out. To my knowledge, there is no similar mechanic in Artifact.

So ultimately, you have a game that was meant to appeal to hardcore card game players (who aren't already playing MTG), on a digital platform which didn't offer any generous incentives (like Hearthstone or Shadowverse do frequently), which was so complicated as to be impenetrable to anyone who hadn't been playing the beta for weeks beforehand (which is the majority of the target audience), and where players could only expand their collections by paying Valve directly for pieces of digital data.

Their greatest crime, however, is making Winter Wyvern sound like a tranny instead of a purring MILF. Absolutely unforgiveable.

TCGs are one of those childhood life lessons. You and your friends sink an incredible amount of energy and money into a bunch of cardstock rectangles, and essentially play the lottery to get the top tier cards.

> For people my age, it was Magic the Gathering and Star Wars TCG.

And now for an entirely new age bracket, Artifact and whatever else is out there. What has to burn even more now; at least suckers from physical media were left with a nice 3ring binder or container of all these pretty illustrations to keep in the closet. Artifact people will have all their shit locked behind a Steam login. Wonder how long before some autist makes their own pirate server and just gives people the full set for a $12 donation?

And at least with the Pirates (Wizkids), you had these little ships around your desk as you and your two other friends that bought them got bored after 2 matches.

>When we launched Artifact, we expected it would be the beginning of a long journey, that it would lay the foundation for years to come. Our plan was to immediately dive into our normal strategy of shipping a series of updates driven by the dialogue community members were having with each other and with us.

>Obviously, things didn't turn out how we hoped. Artifact represents the largest discrepancy between our expectations for how one of our games would be received and the actual outcome. But we don't think that players misunderstand our game, or that they're playing it wrong. Artifact now represents an opportunity for us to improve our craft and use that knowledge to build better games.

>Since launch, we've been looking carefully at how players interact with the game as well as gathering feedback. It has become clear that there are deep-rooted issues with the game and that our original update strategy of releasing new features and cards would be insufficient to address them. Instead, we believe the correct course of action is to take larger steps, to re-examine the decisions we've made along the way regarding game design, the economy, the social experience of playing, and more.

>So what does this mean?

>Moving forward, we'll be heads-down focusing on addressing these larger issues instead of shipping updates. While we expect this process of experimentation and development to take a significant amount of time, we’re excited to tackle this challenge and will get back to you as soon as we are ready.

Lol.

Bout time the "development-stage market-testing is dead" meme takes a hit.

Can't say this is a result of:

- Valve not having a proper, business leadership hierarchy.

- Valve hiring fresh-outta-college kids and experienced coders who don't understand business.

- Valve listening to yuppie journalists (bloggers) as how the average Joe operates

Or some other issue, but the "let's just patch our game post-launch until it keeps making more and more money" formula isn't always going to work.

Would Anthem fall into that category? After 1 month, their 1.04 update broke the game again. They have items that basically don't work where you can roll 0s on an effect or give 20% shield to your enemy upon defeat. Also, slowly giving you more textures and pieces for customization that were clearly there as shown before in an earlier alpha stream. There was that 1 week boycott because the beta testers still playing didn't get enough loot when they rolled back the drop rates. Yet, I hear barely anyone talk about Anthem, unlike when a massive failure like Fallout 76 even got talked about way after release when they even fuck up merchandise for their game. Maybe people stopped caring about Bioware and Anthem was already the nail in the coffin.

My MTG experience was a bit different. Rather than a lottery it was more like I was advising my friends how to properly play the stock market. I would tell them what the sleeper rare of each set was and they would invest a few hundred dollars on them only to sell back for profit on ebay after they shot up.

from what i could gather..

they decided to put out an online card game at a premium price in a market where all of its competitors are free to play. on top of that, they still tried greedy and required you to cough up money for cards instead of gaining them from play. this compounded with the fact that, in order to be competitive with the prevailing meta, you had to have certain specific cards which meant you had to buy card packs or get ripped off on the steam marketplace. the game was also boring and difficult to watch. its hard to sell people on a game where you don't see people looking like they're having fun with it.

probably the first step valve has to do to at least get it living again is probably refund everyone's 20 bux and make it F2P. then fix the game and be less greedy overall..

And its negative summ game. Ticket cost 5$. To gain cards worth 5$ you need more than 50% winrate. Everything designed to drain players from their money.

The point of buying ticket is to gain cards, if you need to gain cards than you dont have god cards already and more likely to lose so there is no reason to buy a ticket (unless you dont know how game works). Its a fucking scam until everyone learns how it work.

And game was for casual assfaggots and blizzard card games faggots. And they expected people who prefer f2p games to pay for fucking every single fucking thing to be able to play a game they already purchased.

Basically they run a scam but forgot to hide all the scammy parts. I mean how the fuck you fuck up a fucking gacha machine? Fucking up something chinks been doing for years is an achievement in itself. I can picture all the internal decisions.

>and when player wins a pack of cards…

>you mean when he wins privilege to buy a pack of cards

>we can make a game f2p where players have to buy packs and tickets and p2p players will receive everything in base game

>how about we make game p2p and p2p players will have to pay for cards and tickets instead?

So question, from your wording it seems the stuff you buy in this game isn't even fixed. Gachapon games are inexcusable but over in Nip land they have some degree of regulation, in particular, drop rates have to be public and correct (and people have in fact gone to lengths to prove bias) and I'm pretty sure paying for something guarantees it. It's not some further roulette. They also add waifus of course and a few even do eroge, I doubt this does.

>RPS

3 wins in a row is 3.7%, 4 is 1.2%. Also Aqua related for being terrible in the best ways.

>>16329413

>and people have in fact gone to lengths to prove bias

Nope, there are probably post in this thread already explaining it. Its not fake card packs, they probably have droprates announced. Its ticked for game-mode which allows you to win packs if you win a lot. Basically 10 players play in a mini tournament, each pay 10$ and the winning fund is 40$, so only 4 players get their money back. Its not accurate, but just to explain how it basically works.

>3 wins in a row

Its not 3 wins in a row its "if I lose a single time".

571d77  No.16329485

>>16329431

So it seems aside from being pay-to-win, the people who do win get more cards to make them win more, which definitely counters the whole fixed and provable drop-rates thing by making it effectively non-deterministic. If it's not that I'd have to look more closely into it to get it, but honestly I don't care about this failure as long as it is one.

>Its not 3 wins in a row its "if I lose a single time".

That only applies when taken on its own, and not how RPS is actually played. But in your hypothetical game it's 29.6% to not have a loss in 3 hands, 19.75% in 4.

Also made me remember 野球拳 is a thing and it's not common enough.

>EA

To be honest, they fucking know how to milk everything they have to the last drop of blood. Even if they lose millions they still keep their profits by their jewish magic. For example do you think its good or bad that your company stocks suddenly lost half their value?

No, if that was your plan to buy back stocks in your company with the money you get from that company(or salary you pay to yourself). As result you dont lose a single fucking thing and gain bigger % of the company you are in control and you can decide to increase stock price or drop it. Unless government sticks its nose, you are golden and you can fucking pay government to fuck off or make laws that benefit you. And its not even their money they are losing… The only problem they are facing is that more then one government starts to look into their bullshit and they were clearly unprepared for that.

Not true, but their marketing was nonexistent to actually change that perception. The best game mode (phantom draft) had 0 pay to win and didn't cost a dime beyond the 10 card packs the game forced you to purchase to own it.

>>16303542

The game, although solid at its foundation, was a mess. Monetization was terrible, since the game was a TCCG like MTG, but fully digital, which is pretty shit.

Game modes was bizarre. You couldn't play draft with your friends or host draft tournaments, everything was skewed towards constructed, which is always shitty at the beginning of a TCG's life and will always be P2W on TCGs as well. Lose lose.

Valve should've focused on retention by encouraging people to play draft and limited, both fun game modes that doesn't require money, while they built up a competitive constructed community under the weight of a casual playerbase with further expansions down the line.

TL;DR Valve was greedy and rushed things a lot

Now that I think about it, it really does seem like they built a card game to be like Dota instead of just making a card game to be its own thing. The fact it takes so long to play a single turn, and having three playfields that you need to both worry about and defend/attack, makes it more of a chore. Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh (later expansions) could be complicated as can be, but at least it was on one playfield. To think that they used the Source engine and they were planning on putting it on phones made me think they were over their heads, especially with no Source games on phones.

Chances are Valve only made Artifact because all their employees were either playing Hearthstone or Dota 2 on company time. Their flat hierarchy means that no project gets started or worked on without employees convincing other employees that it would be cool to actually make something. The dumb hipster faggots at Valve probably thought that it would be super cool to have their own digital card game that they could control.

And their structure revealed a really obvious problem when it comes to competition, that being they only get around to it when the games in question they want to copy have already saturated the market. Had Artifact came out in 2012 it probably would've done much better and had the time to get fixed before being raped in the ass by Hearthstone.

>already saturated the market

Don't repeat industry narratives. That is their excuse for failing, not the reason. Remember that when you repeat these narratives you are taking away blame from the real problems, namely the extremely poor game design.

How do you explain the 99% who paid for the game and then dropped it? How do you explain other games that do well in an allegedly over saturated market after coming out of nowhere?

>Had Artifact came out in 2012

It would have failed at any time. Please stop pretending the game is good or average or acceptable and that external factors are to blame. They're not. The game is shit.

remember how the first iteration of Half-Life was shit and they practically rebooted the game?

thats not going to happen, they wont commit to anything these days or are unwilling to spend energy necessary to get anything substancial shipped, they seems to have forgotten that you cant ship anything without sacrifices

if /v/ wasn't talking about it I never would have known this game existed. I have zero interest in card games unless it's playing poker in real life or something similar.

If artifact jumping on the card game train 4 years after it already left the station is any indication HL3 is going to be a battle royale game released in 2021

Who ever would've thought that a dota card game after the card game boom and after the audience reaction to the reveal would fail spectacularly?
