The _best Final Fantasy. It's recently come to my attention that the Occuria were originally Mind Flayers before being changed to the vague god-beings we have in the final game. This strikes me as an even greater injustice than shoehorning Vaan and Penelo in because some neurotic Japanese suits had a shitfit about having a 36 year old protagonist.

As it stands, this game is probably my favourite in the FF series, but imagining how much better it could have been is painful. A tighter 4 character cast of Balthier, Ashe and Fran, with Basch as the lead muddling their way through the unseen influence and schemes of Lovecraftian ayys would have been amazing, assuming the combat was rebalanced to account for a party size of 4.

Are there any missable monsters? I'd like to fill out my bestiary, but I'm not sure if I messed that up on this run.

Maybe it's because I'm more used to WRPGs over JRPGs, so not having random encounters etcetera didn't blow my mind, but I have never understood the "MMO" label gets used with this game. I fucking hate MMOs, I've never played any MMO that I could stomach, despite trying a few, and I just don't see why the fuck this nonsense stuck with this game. Is it the hunter's mark quests? Because "go kill the monster for a reward" is as old as the fucking hills, and hardly exclusive to MMOs.

FFXIV has now its own version of Ivalice. The Raid revisits the events of FF Tactics and makes Rabanastre part of the World of Hydelin, the world in which FFXIV takes place. Furthermore, in the new expansion, Shadowbringers, Viera's will be a playable race. While I enjoy FF XIV, I share >>16296047 's sentiment, the Raid was the best part of that game, it's plot was above the rest of that expansion and it was pretty good fanservice, but it only highlighted what a waste it was not to make a new Ivalice's Final Fantasy. I wish that, if SQ ever decides to release another MMO, that it would take place in Ivalice and not be a WoW clone. Also I fucking miss Tactics and I wish that instead of FF XIII and FF XV and all of that bullshit they had focused on creating more games set on Ivalice.

I haven't played Final Fantasy XII yet, but plan to do so soon, as it looks like it is quite neat. How is the game in terms of combat and character development? Does the combat demand a decent degree of strategy and thinking? Is character progression satisfactory? Also, is there a decent degree of challenge?.

>how is XII

In all honesty, it's not that challenging. You shouldn't have any problems playing through the main story without any grinding, and if you do any grinding at all, it will quickly become a cake walk. I think that Zodiac Age changed where and how you acquire gambits, which makes the game easier. I only very recently started playing the game again (the Zodiac Age version), the last time I played having been at the game's original launch. Back then I did't really have the patience to do much of the optional content, so my knowledge of the later game encounters is pretty limit. Some of the optional stuff may require a little more thought and attention.

All that aside, I really like XII, mostly because of the setting, characters and aesthetics, and the narrative as well, which isn't for everyone, but tickled me in all the right places (politics, war drama, occult themes and symbolism, the Imperials aren't actually "bad guys" and so on). but I do like the combat system and gameplay as well, even if it's not terribly challenging as it seems more grounded that other games in the series in some ways, and you're given a lot of options for how to handle things. For instance back when I played this on ps2, I decided to solo the game with Basch after he joined the party, more or less on a whim. You're also given a lot of freedom to explore in many segments, and there are many places you can access long before the story requires you to visit, if you can survive, which is nice, and sort of an optional challenge in and of itself.

Despite the corporate interference in it's development, it's a very well realised setting, with great writing, atmosphere and lots of interesting stuff going on in the background. I consider the game to be a "flawed masterpiece".

>how is FF XII

I could right an essay on this game. It has a lot of good things going for it, but it was ruined due to bad execution. It could have been a really great game certainly better than it was, but what we got was only mediocre. It's still worth a play through if you can get it for free. It could have been the best FF by far, but it was butchered. At least we got sexy brown bunny amazons out of it.

e3f548  No.16296469

>>16296405

>it's not that challenging

Well it is a bit of a shame, though I'm on the opinion that if you need grinding to beat an RPG main story line then it is not a good RPG, as the game should pace the player in a way that he is not behind the level curve for the content they are in, and instead should give the tools for player to overcome enemies by playing well (for example of an RPG well done, SMT Nocturne, where learning how to use your skill and fusing is key to win), so I'll take it as an actual positive point. I know there is quite a lot of side content, and some of it can be quite tricky. How fun are melee character? I usually don't like when melee character can little more than auto attack or only have damaging skills. In case melee only is boring, how viable are mage/melee, ranged/melee and does items play an important role in fights?. I'm probably going to play it quite soon, as I have been itching for some good RPG to sink my time in, and the License board concept seems pretty interesting, seems give you quite a wide array of possibilities to develop your characters. The concept art of the game is just gorgeous. Must confess that part of the reason for wanting to play FF XII stems from how god damn beautiful the Raid in FF XIV was. Also Vieras are fucking great

One last thing, is there a lot of missable content? I know the shenanigans with treasure chest and missing an uber weapon, but I can live without it. I'm talking more about sidequest and stuff like summons and minigames. I don't like to grind as to not render the main story line too easy, but I would hate even more to miss content just because I decided to progress the plot.

f15fae  No.16296630

>>16296469

>melee characters

Melee is mostly passive. All your characters should have some utility magicks and technicks, but you don't really have active abilities or anything. Straight up attackers are vital, but most will consider them a little "dry".

>hybrid roles

Zodiac Age is basically built for this since each character gets 2 license boards. Some class combos work better than others, but anything is viable.

>item use

Gambits work really well with item use (for example, having most characters set a high priority phoenix down targeted at a dedicated healer in case they go down), and I would say items are probably slightly more important in this game compared to others in the series.

>license board

Depends on which version of the game you have. In the original, the whole board aside from Espers (which are limited to 1 per party member) was open to every character, which meant you could build the character more or less as you like. In Zodiac Age, the class based license board is small enough that you'll fill it out for sure unless you're rushing the game, and maybe even then (I've almost filled out one board having just left Raithwall's Tomb, but I got about 2k LP from killing skeletons in Lhusu mines). In ZA, the customisation comes from deciding which boards to assign to which character. You're not limited in this way though, you could assign White Mage/Black Mage to every character if you so pleased.

>missable content

I'm not sure myself. I'm hoping complete the bestiary, but I don't know what, if anything is missable.

If Square ever makes any game set in Ivalice, it will be shit. They would literally make the characters ride on Ferraris, in order to create a commercial for the company, and get their sponsorship. The game would have product placement all over it, with dragons wearing strips with "Netflix" written over it. It would have Zodiac Stones with writings on them that would read "subscribe for our channel and get a discount in making a new Master Card account".

Ivalice is good because of the team that made it. Not because of Square-Enix. And most of said team is not working for the company anymore.

Was searching for some Wolf Mark when I found this guy. Is pretty cool that you can find Allied/Neutral NPCs like this. It was fighting other monsters and everything. It seems you can also attack him, perhaps even steal, but haven't tried. Hope there are a lot more encounters like this. Is also pretty nice how some monster behave differently. The rabbits cast protects and heals on you if you do nothing to them, and will try to run away when low in health.

Choosing boards for each character is going to be difficult. So far I aim to make most of them some kind of hybrid to make sure they have lots of magicks/techniks as I find character that do little more than auto-attack boring, but also feel the need to choose classes that "fit" the character, which may not be good combos. So far I made Vaan Shikari and Penelope White Mage. I'm stealing every single enemy I find, seems like quite a nifty way to make some guil.

>Obviously I pirated the official strategy guide but it was still annoying as fuck.

Pathetic. Really. Compared to how difficult (read:tedious) most of the FFXII post game bosses were the giant crystal map couldn't even be thought of as a mild nuisance. It doesn't even make any deliberate attempts to confuse you, the teleports are all labelled and there's a total of TWO (2) looping segments. Really, this is what happens when people rely on built-in way point markers, constant mini-maps and GO HERE arrows up in every game they play. Can't even manage the absolute bare minimum of navigation without having their hands held. Reminds me of those valve playtesters that couldn't get out of a cave because of a y-fork where one fork looped backwards that caused them to give up after half an hour of going around in a circle.

>>16300690

Enemy behaviour was generally fairly well done and interesting, it's true that XII did a lot of good things and it's really a shame that so much of it came out so flawed in the end. Don't worry too much about character classes, the game won't throw anything too difficult at you in the regular story, as long as you don't do anything too unbalanced it's perfectly manageable.

You're getting your numbers mixed up.

Type 0 is indeed a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis as it was originally named FF Agito 13 along with 15 which was Versus 13. However 12 and 14 were not a part of Nomura's autistic money sink. The only reason 14 has a version of Ivalice is because the game thrives on fanservice jerkoffs.

I thought the theory here was that Shinra from 10-2 eventually comes to harness the Farplane as an energy source that would become known as the Lifestream in 7? Where does this "same universe, different planets" business come from?

The map roughly matches up, with continents in the same places.

Where the crystal tower stood in FF3, there's an uexplained crater in FF8, which may have been where the crystal pillar in that game originally stood before it was moved to Centra.

The ruins at the bottom of the ocean in FF8 are under the corner of the map; the Floating Continent (which required maintenance to stay airborne) was above the corner of the map.

Dollet is a remnant of an ancient empire, and is located in the same area as the huge city of Saronia.

The sorceress power may be descended from Doga and Unei, who likewise were gifted their magic powers rather than learning them through study. FF8 credits the origin of the sorceress power to Hyne, another FF3 character, although his magic was pretty weak.

See, this shit is bizarre.

Sage Vascaroon came to consult with Zebalga. He was wise, and knew the answer to the problem with "half of Hyne's body". "Hyne" had given them a corrupted part of his body. What the humans had thought was "half of Hyne's body" was really just the "cast off skin of Hyne". When they heard this explanation, the Zebalga clan was furious. They vowed to destroy "Hyne". However, the other half of Hyne's body was nowhere to be found. The humans began referring to the missing "Hyne" as "Hyne the Magician", and sought him for generations. It's to be expected that the "magic of Hyne" could not be found. Because of people's feelings at that time, it concealed itself in bodies, in the form of women, people who it was thought should be protected.

Because the "cast off skin" bit above implies that "Hyne" really is "Hein". Hein, an undead wizard, was just a minion of Xande. Why the fuck would you retcon him to be the creator of humanity? Or even if it's just "ingame folklore", or an inaccurate story, how would this relatively minor player become a mythic progenitor of humanity while Xande fades into obscurity? Am I missing something here?

6e78a7  No.16306646

I can see that being the case. Kind of like how the big bad of the Lord of the Rings books was Sauron, who was just a minion of Morgoth. It's been a while since I read the Silmarillion though so I forget if Sauron was a regular minion who inherited his power after Morgoth was defeated, or if Sauron was already special himself when he was under Morgoth. So I can see a minor character becoming much more prominent that a previously more major character working out.

That's pretty much where my understanding ends. Maybe someone on the dev team remembers what they were trying to do with these connections. Considering how the rest of FF8 turned out, they probably didn't finish whatever they were going for.

It's possible they just threw in a bunch of references to FF3 because they liked it. There are some similarities that don't imply continuity, like the heroes being orphans, or Ultimecia having the same motivation as Xande.

Hard to say, many of the areas look very nice, are fun to explore and the fact that the different monster types behave in different ways can lead to some surprises. Probably I would say I really like Rabanastre and its surroundings, they left a very good first impression on me and I find them very comfy to explore. Also really liked the trip through the Sandsea to the Tomb of Kings, the maps themselves aren't super amazing but it did instill me a feeling of "journey" despite the fact that they are relatively small.

Doing hunts and some of the side quest have been pretty fun so far is. Love the magic classes, so far all spells have been pretty useful and Green Magic in particular seems great. I only have Oil and Decoy but those two are game changing spells for me at this point. The Melee classes are a bit disappointing for me only because I usually like them with a decent amount of skills to use, but the way different weapons work and some of the technikes are pretty interesting. Perhaps is because I'm playing in weak mode, but exploiting elemental weaknesses, using items and so on has made the combat enjoyable and feel quite rewarding. Also it feels like the game is brimming with content, or at least it gives that impression, I stumble with weird enemies when re-exploring certain areas and some sidequest that are not register anywhere, like the bug men in the Sandsea (forgot their names, it takes me awhile to remember them).

>Fuck you Vaan

Gotta agree. I don't hate the guy or anything, but him and Penelo feel so out of place so far and have very little to do with anything. Its even more egregious as Basch, Balthier and Ashe feel like any of them could be main characters. Also I still think if they had to have a male teenage as a protagonist, Reks would have worked so much better. He was actually there when "Basch" betrayed the king, he was a soldier and therefore knows how to defend himself, but was still young and have space to grow, his desire to protect his little brother is more "tangible" than just wanting to become a Sky Pirate and gives him a better excuse to go along with the others, seeing as he also seemed to be a loyal and dutiful soldier, the drama between him and Basch would have been stronger and it wouldn't be as awkward when they start working together (Vaan sorts of just believes and forgives Basch, Reks could have realized the truth after seeing Gabranth take out his mask, seeing that they are identical and recognizing the voice). Although perhaps it is just my personal opinion. Also Penello is cute, but she is even worst that Vaan in the sense that she has even less to do with anything. The only other character which motivations are kind of weak is Fran, but I assume she is either interested in money, as Balthier, o has her own reason but haven't been told yet. If it was in my power, I would have taken out Vaan and putted a Bangaa on his place, and changed Penelo to a Moggle or Nu Mou and make some else the main protagonist. The only feasible reason for not having playable Nu Mou or Moggles I can think of is because the more "realistic" aesthetics of the game compared to Tactics Advanced may had made those two races seem awkward in combat as anything else but mages or using daggers, and the story is more serious in tone than so maybe it would have looked out of place, but man, it is still such a shame. Bangaa at least would have worked great, they have no excuse for that one.

>Never understood the hate I always see it get.

To me, it seems it was hated by a lot of "casual" FF players who only played the mainline games, and only the popular entries at that (particularly VII, maybe VIII, probably X, and unlikely VI). The difficulty and the combat system was harder that the average FF, even if it wasn't too hard, and the story wasn't your typical FF story, being more similar to Tactics, Vagrant Story and Tactics Ogre, with strong political elements, world building and thicker lore. Also when it comes to aesthetics, it was pretty far from the typical European Fantasy and Star Wars/Star Trek sci-fi look, which may look like it would have the opposite effect but actually seems like if the game doesn't fit in any of those two archetypes, masses will be less inclined to accept it. Add to this the problems the game has because of its trouble development and the game got fucked hard, which is a shame as so far I'm enjoying it greatly. I must confess though, I didn't quite liked it when it was released in PS2, but I'm fucking retarded and have been playing lots of game I overlooked in the past.

Now I'm fucking sad SE has become garbage. There is so many fucking good games they could release: Tactics and Tactics Ogre, perfect the experimental Vagrant Story, Crystal Chronicle and so much more. Hell, I like XIV, but I would change it in a heartbeat for a Ivalice themed MMO with gameplay closer to XII or even XI.

Was able to beat it by equiping Balthier with the Iron Gorget and letting him stay in Critical through the fight while spaming Aero with Ashe and tanking with Vaan. Still got to use Travel and a Shock Mote and even then I think I was literally one shot away from losing, fucker silenced Ashe at the last moment as I had forgoten to equip her with the right accessory. I know it was optional, but I wouldn't be happy if I just gave up. Almost have a heart attack when I saw the second one, but that one was a piece of cake. I should probably stop fucking around with hunts, sidequests and skeleton genocidepic related so much, I've completely filled out Vaan's first license grid (except Espers, obviously) due to having a Golden Amulet equipped, and I'm still pretty early in the game. Mainline quest is going to be a little dull now, combat wise I guess.

I wanted to use every license grid whilst also maintaining something like thematic cohesion and defined roles for every character, so my party looks like this:

Vaan: Machinist/Archer

Penelo: Shikari/Bushi

Balthier: Black Mage/Red Battlemage

Fran: Foebreaker/Uhlan

Basch: Monk/Knight

Ashe: White Mage/Time Battlemage

>Reks would have worked so much better

As far as what we got in the game, I agree. However, the sad part is that I think Vaan actually had some potential. I think it's clear that Vaan was meant to be an "Aladdin" of sorts, and it would have been fairly easy to insert plot points to reinforce his role in the narrative by giving him more "burglar moments" beyond just sneaking in to the palace. Give him something to do that the others couldn't the way that Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit (book, not movie) did.

>Nu Mou and Moogles

As much as I love Moogles, I think a Moogle party member would presented problems as you mention, but Nu Mou would be fine, Just give them absolutely atrocious physical stats. I generally don't understand why Nu Mou were so criminally under-used anyway, especially when they went to the trouble of introducing the Seeq for no real reason. I also don't really like how like how the Nu Mou were somewhat weirdly redesigned, but there are so few of them it barely matters. The whole episode with the Garif, for example, could have been presented slightly differently, with Nu Mou sages instead of inventing another whole new race.

Have anybody play with the mod Struggle for Freedom? I'm checking it out and it is very interesting. Not only it increase the enemies stats, but also seem to give some of them skills and the like to make them stronger. Also characters stats are changed around, some classes have new spells and old spells have been modified (for example, now Blizzard is an AoE attack, while Fire have a chance of inflicting Oil). Seems quite interesting. You can also choose to play with the PS2 free license boards, a rebalanced version of the Zodiac Age boards, the regular version of the Zodiac Age boards and a new linear one to give each class a predetermined role. I'm trying it out so can say how good it is yet, I'm worried that the enemies may have become bullet sponge, but it is noticeable they hit harder and can take a bit more of a beating so far.
