And Eden's Gate is nothing but doomsayer crazy with no effective Christian elements.

Not all anons remember the big controversy with Rule of Rose, which had the game banned in several countries (including the UK). It was the moral panic of the PS2 age.
The game was a Silent Hill clone, mixing Dickens with Lord of the Flies, and the mainstream media wildly misled and conflated its plot events. Going from stories of evil children abusing their peers and the player, to turning the game's entire goal into torturing kids.

Just my opinion.
All of the Dark Souls games were enjoyable in their own way but felt very watered down in places or not as pure as Demons.
Bloodborne was pretty amazing but never recreated the same feeling I had playing Demons Souls but then again that's most likely for the best since it was probably the only original exclusive Soyny had for a decade.
Shadow Tower (especially Abyss) was also incredible but clearly suffered from budgetary/technological constraints of it's hardware/times and quite frankly I would be interested to see a new installment though with how memey FromSoft are now I know it would have none of the esoteric charm.
Though of course I have no doubts there's most likely a game that would give me a similar feeling as Demons Souls made by other devs I was just saying that I haven't really come across something since.

Silent Hill 1-4.
Parasit Eve 1 has a lot of body horror.
Recently I finished Drakengard and boy does it have disturbing content. Main protagonist is a killer psycho (one mission in the game is slaughtering a whole battalion of child soldiers, who are no real threat to you and just die screaming in terror while begging for mercy). Your team consists of a confirmed pedo and a crazed child killing cannibal. There are multiple endings each more fucked up than the previous one.

Body horror glitches are one thing, but does anyone get sheer unsettling feels of "nope" over out of bounds glitches? Barren areas are one thing, but the less well put together, the more unsettling it becomes. Stuff like invisible walls with clunkier physics than usual, floors and walls that aren't solid, weirdly rendered props or set pieces that bug out in bad areas, or stuff that has bad culling so shit just disappears in parts at random. Bonus points if collisions are wildly inconsistent and unpredictable. Video related, it has all of this at once, and it drives me bananas. I'm a pussy about this when it happens to me in games for some reason, so I never do out of bounds glitches. I can't explain why it hits me as hard as it does.

I play Skyrim every once in a while, and last Halloween I was in the mood for some spooky mods. But I couldn't find anything interesting on Nexus mods, or at least nothing I hadn't tried a million times already. After half an hour of browsing, this anonymous comment catches my eye: 'if your lookin for a legit scare, give Slingboy a try'.
The name piqued my interest, because it absolutely rang no bells at all. I tried googling it, but neither search engines nor mod databases had anything even remotely related to it. And I didn't need to dig through social media, to know it wasn't an active project still being discussed. As a last ditch effort, I tried looking for old pages in the Wayback Machine: lo and behold, one result popped up. A Filefront page from 2008, since deleted, with broken pics and a meager 12 total downloads. The mod was filed under 'miscellaneous files' for Oblivion, though.
The description field contained nothing but an e-mail address… which is probably why most users had ignored it. I just wanted to see what the damn thing was about… was it just a bunch of skins? If so, I could at least take a look; possibly if I they were good, I could import them in Skyrim myself (I know bit of modding myself).
But it seemed rude to just mail some devs from last decade who had surely moved on: what if they had a career and a family, and some weirdo suddenly started talking about some horror gore project they did in their youth? So I just tried my luck with Google, again. I threw around more keywords, like the dev's address and the mod's filesize. Nope, zero results… same when I switched to Yahoo and Bing. Only Duckduckgo was able to nail some results, in DUTCH no less.
They were from an archived thread on an old phpBB forum, but it required membership to read it and OBVIOUSLY (fuck my luck) the registration system had been broken since forever. At this point, all I had to feed Duckduckgo with, was some impromptu dutch notions and praying for something to stick. It might sound pretty stupid on my part, but please understand I'm no computer wiz and mostly I use this machine to play games.
In the random results I got (mostly from ads and bots) was this messy page, not unlike opening an image file in Notepad++. But among the unintelligible garbage, there my friends were some actual links. I didn't even try to click on the old Megaupload ones, so I went for several of these local file hosters from Europe which I had never heard about. It was a waste of a good ten minutes of my life (file removed due to inactivity! file removed due to breaking policy!), but in the end the lower left of my browser was finally graced with an active download.

Three seconds later, I got myself a ~860kb zipped file 'SLdf6s5_2008.rar'. Containing what I assumed was the actual unpacker\installer for the mod, Slingboy.exe. Norton found no issues, so I run with it and… surprise, it turns out the program was actually not the mod proper, but the FUCKING PATCH. However I pretty much bit my tongue there, because the updater was smart enough to run an integrity check on the mod's installation, and went on to re-download the full pack again. I gave it a go on my firewall and came back later.
On a side note, I actually like this kind of automated installer: there's a few mega-overhaul mods that would definitely benefit from something like this. For starters, it's got the classic Windows XP look, sleeker than the god-awful 10 I'm running (don't ask, it came pre-installed). Anyway, as I said the installer was busy downloading several gigs of stuff, and in the end it asked for a reboot - which I did. The new version looked quite different: it sported a festive look, with a jingle bells midi playing in the background (there was also a mute button, thankfully) and a feisty red 'Christmas 2018 Edition' title on top.
First thing the updated installer did, was to bring up some legal crap. You can't even click 'NEXT' until you've scrolled down all the way down, fuck that. Afterwards, you are asked to specify which system you will be installing Slingboy onto, through a drop down menu. That's what I actually loved with this thing: the devs didn't just forget about their little passion project, but actually cared to keep it alive by porting it on as many other platforms as possible.
You can select whatever you like: on the list, you can either pick 'Morrowind' or 'Skyrim' directly, or save time by taking the 'The Elder Scrolls' option as a whole. Had I taken this option, the installer would have modded my Skyrim installation alone, because I had no other TES games currently installed. But there's more: i.e. if you pick the designated option, it can patch all 'Bethesda' games automatically (it even detected my Fallout 76 folder!). It even detects other non-Bethesda games altogether, and their whole series too, even organizing them by publishers. Some publishers I didn't even know, but I picked Microsoft which obviously I know from Minecraft, and there was the 'Minecraft' option: same with all the 'Gears' and 'Rise' series (the latter I don't really know, honestly). And there's even more in-depth options among the game franchises, like 'OS 2015', 'NET Framework' and 'DirectX'. From what I gather, the installer actually extends to Apple and Android products: mobile too, like those weird proprietary systems from Sweden and India lol. You can even install Slingboy on digital TVs! Most, if not all big manufacturers (like Samsung and Sony) do show up on the list. And you can even patch them from your PC, cozy like that: remote installation, you don't have to bother hooking up the PC to the telly. That's pretty cool, it's fast and gets the job done.
And if you're REALLY in a hurry, then you select the 'Range' option: which lets you modify all devices that can be reached with your Wi-Fi, easy like that. There was so much stuff, I can only remember a few more. I tried selecting 'Wireless Networks', and it ran a scan on our neighbourhood's active connections: you could click on each, and see a bunch of devices listed under - computers, phones, even people. Seeing 'People' there was pretty weird, my guess is it's really a way to designate ownership of each device. Still, everybody is listed in the menu: you can navigate up in the categories, which organize each person by sex, race and nation; or you can delve deeper in the submenu, for incredibly specialized options like 'Neural' or 'Gene'. I'm not one to mess around with options this technical, because quite frankly I'm not that good with either computers OR people ehe. So when the installer was asking me to specify which system I needed to modify, I actually left the field blank and let the software patch out EVERYTHING it could. It saved me a lot of time.
Pic related, it's me and my little brother after installing Slingboy. Check out my in-depth review on Youtube (the file link is in the description).

Watching a body stretch into impossible shapes because I closed a door on them or what not is funny to me. Concepts or ideas disturb me far more than something shown. Take for example what I said earlier. Grotesque zombie abortion babies with razor sharp claws that infect you with the plague? Terrifying. They look like mushrooms though so that lessens the impact for me, however. I'll give another example with Dead Space. I was far more scared when enemies weren't on the screen and it was just Isaac in an empty hallway surrounded by the creaking of the Ishimura and the screams of distant survivors. The necromorphs themselves aren't that scary.

Hydrus actually disturbed me, I was so immersed in the game that when I saw a gigantic creature lurking in the depths of the water that I had to mentally prepare myself to jump down, I thought I couldn't fight him in there at first and nearly shat my pants once he started going near me, you were extremely limited in the water and you were in there with a gigantic fucking monster, that stuff is one of my few fears to this day. Without proper equipment a human being is fucking useless in the water, couple that against an organism that's highly specialized for it an it just frightens me more than any jumpscare or psychological fuckery.
I can swim in open water, but I'm always appreensive and dislike staying there for long periods of time due to being frightened of what might lurk below.
I love the ocean and water creatures in general, to the extent that one of my dreams is cage diving with white sharks, but they scare the shit out of me, it's really fucking weird.

My sister wondered how I couldn't get nightmares when she saw me fight with Cerberus in DMC3. Nothing in the series really touched me too much. though this thread did remind me that 5 sadly seems to have lost a lot of the same great atmosphere the original game had. Vid related being a prime example of entering a mirror world with faces on the walls, a sun that looks inverted, as well as its inhabitants being some of the most creepiest, powerful demons in the game with unforgettable laughter, exploding toxic body parts, and dancing that will drain you of your devil trigger. All set with equally ominous and dark music that makes you think just what kind of hell Vergil experienced for years since you enter it through the same mirror you initially see him walk out of near the beginning of the game. On that note, I guess the thought of being used as a brainwashed puppet ala Nero Angelo or batteries such as Lady in Trish in the latest game is probably what unnerves me the most like little else.

Absolutely false, especially in the first circles the game can't shut up about crusaders being evil and followers of false religious authorities. While muslims are portrayed as defenders (reversal of actual history) and their leader Saladin in particular describe as noble, versus the corrupt european kings.

Worst of all was flowey, forced to live an eternity of pure torment and suffering with seemingly no chance of escape.
Actually, scratch the seemingly part, there is no chance of escape, no ending in undertale frees him from his eternal prison. None.
Even the one where you "kill him" you aren't rewarded any exp for it, something you should get since he was lv 9999. It's even better when you realize that the person responsible got away with a slap on her wrist.
Shit, you aren't even given the option to not forgive her for her crimes after finding them out, you're just supposed to pretend like she's free of sin because if you didn't your "super happy ending" wouldn't be as happy or some shit toby made the fuck up to shoehorn her into the ending. Meanwhile, the eternal hell that flowey is stuck in ticks on day after day until he reloads or until some unlucky fuck loses his soul to a slime creature and Armageddon breaks out forcing him to take in souls to slaughter the humans for the survival of his race.

That bit with the hanging players is actually neat. One of the issues with background shit is that if you have characters they're likely generic bits and pieces, but with the hanging players feature, it makes it more "immersive" in that the background characters are more detailed and not so different from you.

While possibly not necessarily fitting the thread, as "disturbing content" is rather subjective, but in many similar threads I never see anyone recommending or mentioning "Fahrenheit", which I thought was a very good and enjoyable game. Personally, it's unusual for me, considering that I generally dislike cutscene/narrative/adventure heavy games, because of how terribly awful they're being executed in majority of games. Then again I've played it a very long time ago, maybe nostalgia tint is here at play.

Disturbing content often is the result of something that is "normal" but is changed or different in some way.
IE:
>human, but their eyes are too big
>a hallway you've been down a dozen times, but now it's mirrored
>a picture you've seen before, but now it's doing something else
Many people fuck this up and just do "LOL GORE OMG THAT'S SO SCARY!" but you need it to be more subtle and not even directly scary.

Call me a faggot if you must but the game's ending actually gave me an anxiety attack.
It's not even a disturbing or scary thing, but something about it clicked with me and gave me a feeling of having lost something and general hopelessness
Never got a feeling anywhere close to that from another game and I've played plenty of them.
1442e5 No.16336992
>>16331191
>just don't make it a boring walking simulator?
Have an environment that you have reason to traverse multiple times and give the player something to do.
IE:
>Winter is coming
>I better chop some wood
>leave cabin
>walk pathway over to firewood pile
>need to chop 4-5 pieces
>you see a tree and a few bushes on the way there and the way back
>maybe even a dog who's happy
>"warm for another night"
>next day
>one of the plants has eyes instead of berries that follow you
>NO DRAMATIC MUSIC
this is a hard part, having music to pull attention to it means you failed. The whole goal is it's something subtle and becomes a little more obvious. Part of the way to deal with it is to have something outwardly drawing attention, such as
>"I need to get firewood before night time… otherwise… IT will be here…"
Combine it with a night time scene with SOMETHING knocking on the door and you'll make a primary threat that will draw most of the attention, but every walk to get firewood has something weird about it, something not normal, but there is no musical cues or anything for the weird stuff, save that only for the "thing" knocking at the door.

My fetish would be "unexpected" horror, where you go about your day and literally nothing worrisome happens, and you might even finish the game thinking it was some sort of comfy camping sim. But things seem off, and you might get encounters, see things etc. the more you get into that.
Of course with modern meme internet culture it's impossible to do this, the first guy that completed it would go on to tell everybody about the creepy premise and the only ones who would get it would be normalfags "pretending" they don't know so they can make squaling faces while doing letsplays.
The only game I saw do it correctly was STALKER. You can encounter random shit and truly get into horror mode despite the game not being about that at all.

I do remember that. Man that was a while ago. It seems almost all the best creepypastas have been lost to the sands of time and now are little more than rumors and myths. I think the most impactful though not necessarily scary one I read was about a modern town that got sent to some other reality with terrible creatures, and were also completely forgotten about here on Earth. They eventually managed to handle things well enough to survive with only the occasional terrible death, when they found these strange holes in the ground where they could pick up radio signals from Earth, mostly just one music station I think. These holes were small though, and made of some impenetrable material. Desperate parents started sending their children through these holes in hopes of getting their kids home or getting help, though the police tried to stop this practice. I won't spoil the ending, it will be better if you take the time to read the actual story, but it stuck with me for a white. One of those things that isn't immediately horrifying, but the longer you think about it, the more you realize how fucked up it really is especially as your imagination starts filling in the gaps.

To be truly unsettling relies on an element of humor, subverted. People often laugh when surprised, when they're led to believe one thing but it turns out something else is true. Especially if revealed in a sudden kind of way. A lot of good humor, for example a good joke, works by gradually suggesting that the listener expects this one thing, and then suddenly introduces something quite different. Good horror works in much the same way. Let the audience think they have it figured out, that they know where you're going, and the surprise them with something else.

It depends on how old the Mount is. There are some that actually do have the actual bones on display, or some actual bones. In fact, one of the earliest proposed mounts was one allosaurus leaping at another in a very dynamic pose, but because the bones were too heavy, it was changed into a single standing pose. So in this case, at least parts of the skeleton had real bones. the part that doesn't make sense is how it can suddenly move with powerful rebar running through it's entire body to hold it in place, but I suppose the genetic fuckery going on could kinda do whatever the fuck eve wanted.

I often compare horror and true disturbing moments as being a parallel to comedy and magic tricks. That said, it's also as difficult to pull off; you can make a joke or a trick, but if the timing is off, people see the punchline coming and/or it falls flat. In that way, it's like a magic trick, keeping the audience guessing. Basically, the warmup to the joke/trick/horror is showing a set of sequences that most people can relate to or understand. But when it comes to the reveal, the expectations are suddenly something you didn't expect.
Take the laughing furniture scene in Evil Dead 2.
>fucked up shit has been happening that is pretty amusing but also weird
>a moment of lull
>the deer head is suddenly moving and laughing
>the books and lamp and everything else is also laughing
>all the laughs are actually at the wrong pitch, carry on for too long and are fucked up if you actually listen to them
>the main character starts laughing with them for a while but then he soons starts freaking out
This scene, I feel, can go either way in being humorous or horror as you certainly weren't expecting it.
