No, no, you got it wrong anon. It's actually.
MMZ2>MMZ4>MMZ3>MMZ1
Two has the best level design and boss battles, while still remaining very challenging. The chain rod is also the most fun version of of the triple rod.
Four has lackluster levels and boss battles but has lots of QoA enhancements you like not tying EX skills to rank and actually allowing you to use elves without feeling like a murderer to spice up the gameplay along with the weather gimmicks. Also has one of the best and memorable final boss battle setups in history of video games period.
Three doesn't have much to stand out with compared to the above examples, aside from the final boss battle which is mechanically speaking the best in the series, the gameplay is difficult but not particularly engaging otherwise. Also recoil rod is shit.
The first one is very dated and clunky compared to the sequels. Not necessarily bad, but they improve upon the formula so much that the original appears lackluster in comparison. It does have a better aesthetic however in my opinion with it's UI and level design that gives the world a bleak and hopeless feel to it that the sequels discarded in favor of a sleeker more modern look.
