IIRC, they're only there to teach the basics of team coordination and to explore scenarios requiring tactical decision making where it would be impractical or too expensive to set up an actual training ground. The games themselves don't teach you shit - you still have to have proper military instruction to get to a point where you can use it in-game.

Ultimately, these are the kinds of scenarios where I could see actual practical use for VR technology. The military would be able to afford the omnidirectional treadmills and haptic feedback suits and more realistic gun props to provide as close to a 1:1 representation of real-world conditions as possible. Though you would still need significant improvements in VR tech before it'd be viable - such as having at least 4k resolution so you can properly identify distant targets and 200 degree FOV so you can actually get useful environmental cues from your periphery.

More on topic, he was just reprimanded to doing shit-detail. He had to take a guard-duty shift over the weekend. Which, aside from the mark on record, is pretty light for disobeying orders. And they do have to reprimand him, because if he's going to get frustrated at a situation like this - how the fuck is he going to deal with the frustration of dealing with command when he's out in the field and the lives of his squad are on the line? Their job is to break that kind of behavior.
