But what changed across the years is that politics in vidya has shifted from being observational to representational. For the former a political theme would be included and explored to its fullest and from every angle. The goal wasn't to judge, but rather to observe all possible points of view and present those to the player while weaving a coherent narrative. That's the key word: exploration. Twisting and squeezing those themes about to see what comes of it, what kind of quests or characters something like that could generate. Games like Deus Ex, Planescape: Torment and the Ultima games toyed with such ideas not to convince, but to simply get people thinking.
But for the latter representational politics, the goal has shifted to give the marginalized a spotlight in vidya in order to make them feel represented. That entails including themes and message to get people to know that these things do exist and should receive more attention. I believe this is referred to as the 'progressive stack'. However, representational politicking is rather counterproductive when you decide to weigh out all sides of the debate. If your goal is to give minorities a chance to speak, why would you allow valid critique of said minorities that isn't immediately and completely refuted? Else the people you are standing up for would be outraged. The unfortunate part is that the representational elements are rarely challenged, making their inclusion feel half-assed because they can't be explored the same way.
For example, what made the leap from Ultima 4 to 5 so brilliant is that in Ultima 4 you had these eight Virtues like Honesty, Compassion, Valor, etc., which you had to adhere to and act accordingly in order to become a true hero and beat the game. Not because you beat some ancient evil, but because you actually behaved like a hero and achieved enlightenment. But in Ultima 5, these Virtues became codified into a set of rigid laws everyone had to adhere to lest they be punished. By forcing those Virtues on everyone, they instead had the polar opposite effect. Possibly this direction for the story would piss off people who played Ultima 4 who thought that it was criticizing the obvious good thing of Virtues of 4, and it is, but at the same time because your ideas get critiqued from unfamiliar points of view you can take those into account and learn to grow your own. Then Ultima 6 came along and introduced a new extradimensional race who had their own set of Virtues, implying that your own set of Virtues wasn't the end-all-be-all of moral behavior for every intelligent being on the planet. Just how many modern RPGs have the balls to actually question their own themes and turn them completely on their head?
The push of representational politics has more to do that the cultural zeitgeist is in kind of a transitional state right now. People are more actively pushing to be more accepting of new things, so you start to see a lot more normalization of these new things in media. But as time goes on, things will shift to an observational perspective again once cultural progress hits a rut. Case in point, around the 70's after the success of the black civil rights movement, blacks would start appearing more frequently in television shows, like the first interracial kiss in Star Trek: TNG, but blaxploitation films would also see their rise. But around the 90's when drugs and gang warfare started to take its toll on black communities and tearing them apart, the optimism of the 80's fell to the wayside which gave rise to stuff like The Wire which dared to actually examine drug culture and black communities in a realistic light. While the law enforcement wasn't shown to be acting in 100% good faith, they weren't completely demonized, and while it was shown that most of the blacks did have to make do starting out in a shitty situation in a shitty neighborhood, the consequences of the bad decisions some made weren't glossed over.
So once the marginalized have been fully accepted but end up eating themselves after time just like the rest, we'll have to wait for some fiction by people who are actually interested in exploring issues. Until that time, all I wish for is that the marginalized be granted the right to be bastards. Gay heroes are starting to become aplenty, but gay villains are a rarity.

Aside from the obvious poz, this stuff is easily the most egregious. Vampires in this setting can't "hang out" with prior contacts in life for obvious reasons - they're meant to be something alien, something beyond human now. Their previous life is supposed to be like a half remembered dream. Without these monstrous elements, without these sacrifices, all you're left with is a human simulator with fangs tacked on. And that isn't interesting. This is to say nothing of the fact that newly made vampires aren't even supposed to be aware of all the different factions at play, so this guy being "a leader" is ridiculous.
