68f183  No.16276797

Everyone knows that all these vidya outlets are corrupt, incestuous paid shilling networks at this point, but it takes a special kind of paid shill to willingly defend and run damage control for Tencent, the most malevolent, powerful and cancerous force in the video game industry, and overall a massive danger to the world.

The Epic Store is a shitty meme and a hot anti-consumer mess, but it wouldn't be worth caring much about if it weren't for Tencent's involvement (Read: practical/de facto ownership of Epic).

https://archive.fo/FHykL

Now Epic is tired of the narrative that Tencent controls them, funnily enough. More people don't like Tencent than are expected so they want to cast off the whole "Tencent is Evil" and "Tencent is controlling us" narrative simultaneously with this embarrassingly bad and contradicting puff piece. Apparently they were laughed and mocked at the GDC and PC Gamer had to come in to the rescue with this.

>During a public Q&A at the Game Developers Conference this week with Epic Games Store leaders Steve Allison, Sergey Galyonkin, and Joe Kreiner, a GDC 2019 attendee invoked a claim that's appearing more frequently in Reddit threads, tweets, and discussions of the company: that Tencent, which invested in Epic in 2013, 'actually' runs the company.

>"[I'm] wondering if it was Tencent's idea to abandon Unreal Tournament's community?" the expo attendee quipped.

>After letting the audience laugh through the awkward tension in the room, Epic Store lead Steven Allison gave a firm response. "Tencent has no, zero, input into our business. They do not talk to us about what we are doing. They don't suggest what we should be doing. They don't make any decisions for us. They are not in our building. Everything we do is with our team, and the final point of conversation when it goes up to the top is Tim [Sweeney, CEO]. And Tim does not take any orders from Tencent. Believe me."

>In 2013, well before Fortnite became a global entertainment phenomenon, Tencent acquired a 40 percent ownership in Epic for $330 million. Tencent's gaming portfolio is vast: it completely owns Riot Games, Clash of Clans maker Supercell, and holds a 5 percent interest in Ubisoft.

>"Obviously there was a significant investment that [Tencent] made in the company a few years ago, and we like them as a company, and they're a partner of ours, but they're not running our business," Allison continued. "They are not in the building. We don't share anything with them. In fact, we compete with them. They run PUBG. We compete with them."

>"Epic is an American company," said Sweeney in a tweet from January. "There are investors and equity holders from all around the world, including Tencent in China. It’s normal for companies of this scale have international shareholders."

So tl;dr they got laughed at at the GDC and are being increasingly mocked and distrusted and feel that they need to show off their "total autonomy". Ignore the fact that according to the same guy last month, Tencent's directors are people who have helped "make Epic what it is today" and are "Super Valuable contributors". Never mind that a Chinese mega-conglomerate owns a near-controlling interest, with the only other person challenging them being Tim Sweeney himself and you can't fucking ignore a 40+% stakeholder's demands. They're "totally American" though. I'm sure Tencent's money-grubbing and devious goals don't align with Epic's at all.

http://archive.is/FoGRq

What a fucking joke.

1262c4  No.16276826

Even IF, and that's a big if, Tencent had no control of the company's actions, they still earn 40% of its profits, which is still an absolutely unacceptable thing to support.

b295da  No.16276845

Every argument you could make as a devil’s advocate for the Epic store is probably true. The problem is that the answer to those arguments is that Tencent are the ones running it.

Do Tencent own Valve or GoG? I don’t think so. Argument over.

Anyone who tries to justify the shit Epic is doing as “competition” is missing the point.

>Anyone who tries to justify the shit Epic is doing as “competition” is missing the point.

No, they're flat out shills. Nobody with even two working brain cells would ever equate "company ten times the size of Valve barging in a buying out exclusivity deals, which is illegal by the way, after they were already promised to be on Steam" to fair competition.

68f183  No.16276855

>>16276845

The only positive thing that Epic could do is both bring themselves and Valve down in all this absurdity since I despise them both. I don't want a market where they're the only two competitors. Good, non-cancerous competitors deserve to get more market share when Steam finally collapses and Epic is most assuredly not one of those.

I'm hoping they both kill each other in an MAD race and everyone else from outside can salvage what can be done out of the smoking wreckage.

The Epic Games store is 100% run by tencent. A person on a discord server I am in has a friend married to a chinese girl. A CEO does not have to act in the best interest of the investors but in the best interest of the company (like not taking a buy out offer). If the board disagrees they can kick out the CEO. Not in all cases will the interests of the investors and the company agree all the time. Say taking big risks when the investors may just want stable low returns. But if you are acting as a fiduciary then your only option is to do what the investors want.

You're a retard judging shit by today's standards. This was during the browser wars era where MS was trying to destroy NetScape and was using bundling as a way to ensure that everyone got Internet Explorer whether they wanted it or not. Back then internet was a novelty and software was a thing you got from stores. NetScape accused MS of anti-competitive practices by forcing IExplore down everyone's throats and attempting to seize control of the entire web browsing market. Just imagine what could happen if MS controlled the browser used by 90% of the internet - they could basically set all the web standards to their own liking. And NetScape somewhat lost the browser wars, but they open sourced their browser into what became known as the Mozilla browser suite (now known as SeaMonkey). Then Mozilla Firefox (the browser, stand-alone) became the most dominant browser for quite a while. So MS wound up losing the browser wars and in today's age a computer that came without a functional browser would be a problem because that is how people interact with the internet nowadays. Stuff like Telnet, SSH, and even FTP have been relegated to the domain of advanced computer users. OS distros need to come with browsers to be internet-functional for the average end-user nowadays, but back then it was different.

As a result the arena crowd doesn't play the new UT. Word of mouth is that the new UT sucks. Only shitty casuals play it.

You can still play the new UT and use custom server settings and mods to repair that damage, but you will be hard-pressed to fill a lobby with gamers who know how to play actual arena shooters.

His end game is good PR. The ultimate goal of articles like this and speeches like he gave at GDC are an attempt to save face and craft a narrative so people stop scrutinizing their shitty business practices and the utter insanity of the exclusivity contracts they've been throwing around. Giving a studio so much money for exclusivity that they do even have to sell their game to have made a profit is not sane in any way.

Right now, Epic has been caught in numerous ways trying to manipulate the market with the help of a massively corrupt Chinese company. Instead of saying "we're trying to do what's best for gamers" or "allow me to explain all that hidden datamining we tried to pull off!" he's out there running his mouth about how Steam is shitty and how there's totally no collusion or underhanded bullshit happening with Epic and Tencent. You can tell what has them panicked the most based on what they've been trying to say. They aren't concerned that they look like scumfuck con-artists or greedy faggots trying to consume the whole industry for their own gain. They are worried that people know they are controlled by Tencent.

their "exclusivity contracts" are timed exclusives

if devs decide to stay only on Epic its up to them

completely different from consoles

The fact that both Epic Games and Tencent exist at all as they are today, is reason to never trust them and to never give money to anything related to them.

"Muh Tencent doesn't own Epic Games". So? They are still Tencent and Epic Games. They are still cancers that must be purged.

I like how Epic and Tencent are basically forcing people to use their platform through exclusivity deals and not because they're actually a better platform.

Valve did the same thing when steam first came out. It was hugely unpopular originally. Maybe not quite on this same scale though.

At least Gabe cared enough to try and take over the PC gaming market and install himself as dictator in the first place. Without someone in charge who has his level of authoritarianism and not giving a shit to lead it somewhere, there's never going to be good games.

But when the fat fuck does it, it's okay.

When other does, it's predatory. So it's okay for it to remain a monopoly, nothing wrong can come from it, besides competition is always bad for consumers.

Yes. Gabe is at least white and likes games. The soulless bugmen of the epic store will use the micro-transaction money for white genocide and to ban people for bringing up Tienanmen Square.

Fuck off, all the storefronts are run by faggots and piracy is the only valid option.
