Epic gave them a check to sign over. What strikes me as dumb is that Presequel was on the downslope of the brand and Battleborn was absolute trash. Unless Gearbox successfully refreshes the formula or steals from someone, its a total loss for Epic. The market its not only saturated, its fatigued, and they are choosing to ride in on a blown mare. Depending on how much money Epic fronts, Gearbox stands to at least break even no matter how shit the game turns out. why tho? the reason people made mods because the games were made with it and easily moddable, and to do that they'd have to bring it up to the level of unity/unreal which at this point is probably outside their scope or effort. plus they've started to use unity already. source also doesn't make the mods, but how open the engine and the game is (unreal supports mods, so does unity via assetbundles, and there's plenty of unity modding around)
